Working in a hifi shop back in the late 70s/early 80s, we sold Denon and I bought one of the first DP 60L tables hitting our shores. Still have it, original box and all. Beautiful table, incomparable performance. I trust you're still enthralled - I am!

Nice video! I guess I would be classified an Audiophile. I have a belt driven TT, but I agree the 1980 TTs from Japan were amazing TTs to own and use. I still have my Kenwood, KD-500 TT, which was one of the heaviest TT, on the market at that time. The base is made from granite, and adhesive blends, which made this TT pretty dead to vibrations. I no longer user it in my system, but I always loved this table because of the quality and the beauty of their design.

Those are great turntables, I still have my DP-62L that I bought new in 1984 and sounds better than ever. It's actually the best sounding DD turntable in my stable, even better than my Yamaha PX-3 Linear Tracker! The only one that come close is my Sony PS-X600, which makes sense because it uses a similar speed control and computerized tracer tonearm. Great video, very informative. Long live vintage Denons!

The tone arm is mounted on the base which also has the motor mounted on it as well. That is a terrible design approach due to its inherent vibration and noise problems.

Great video and explanation of the turntable I am looking to get. I learned so much about the product, and you hit on all the salient points. I, too, prefer vintage stereo components and turntables to today's generally inferior quality and suspect origins. Thanks again for spelling out the important stuff.

I completely agree! I have no plans to replace it until it breaks, if it breaks. It is different from this one because it is fully automatic (it even detects the size of the record and guesses the speed based on the size, but there are manual overrides for both), but the specs are otherwise very similar. It encouraged me to rig up a proper stereo system, complete with new Pioneer floor speakers and an old Pioneer receiver.

That is a beautiful table! I never owned this particular model but my brother in-law did. Ad for me, I owned the DP-55K which looked pretty much the same with the Rosewood base. The 55K was a fully manual table which came without a tonearm and I added a Grace 707 MKII to it, had the board drilled for the arm board/arm rest. I added an Audio-Technica arm lifter in order to pick the arm up at the end of the album. I used a Grace 8-F/L moving magnet coil along with a Grado Red Ruby of which I can not recall the model designation but that one was a moving coil. I hope that you still own this wonderful piece and that it continues to serve you well. Denon made some outstanding products back in the 80's and early 90's.

I also have a 55k and it has a Denon tone arm with lift lever. I like the manual aspect of it, with less things to break. I use AT120e, AT440mla, Empire2004, and the Denon DL160 HOMC Cartridges. I like the cheap AT120e the best. I paid $200 for the table about 20 years ago, from a friend. I've heard if you ever have speed problems with it, you might as well junk it and buy another.

Thanks very much for the comment. I also have a Technics SL-MA1 which is direct drive and fully automatic. It too has an arm system that operates separately from the platter drive. Also a very good table so I know what you're talking about. Your Sony and my technics are exceptions to the general rule of automatics. I've checked out your model on the net. Very nice!! Denons are just my personal preference but I respect all higher end tables like yours. Keep that Vinyl spinning!!

Thanks for the video explainer, it was helpful. I just found one of these in near mint condition in my late Uncle’s house. Only thing that’s amiss is that the cartridge seems to be missing the stylus tip, so I’ll need to buy a new cartridge. Other than that it has the dust cover, both the straight and S tone arms with both counterweights, and overall it looks great. Super excited to get it fully ready and try it out.

Great looking deck and I'm sure it also plays amazing. Has a great reputation. Not keen on companies not publishing tech details, but hey, they are mostly inflated anyway. The thing with direct drive TTs are that they cost a fortune to repair, as they are complex. I just stayed with belt drive. Ermm, just realised this was 10 yrs ago!!

Hi Robert. I am envious of your DP 59l, would love to add it to my collection. Your comments are so true, the quality today is no where near what it used to be. I think the people that would prefer to buy, say, a new Rega RP6 for $1200 over one of these quality Denons for say $700 are crazy. Just because the word NEW is attached, a lot of people think it is better. If they only knew!

My first thought is, does your receiver or amp have a Phono input. Only the phono input will provide enough signal boost to properly amplify the cartridge in your turntable. A regular auxilary input will not do the trick. Most newer receivers don't have this feature where the older, more vintage ones do. If yours does not have one you will either have to buy a phono preamp that will connect to the aux or switch to a receiver that has one. Does this help at all?

Great Comments! Another Denon Lover!! It is sad that the technology Denon used for super accurate speed control can't be found in todays new tables. People talk about how great their "Project" or "Rega" is but how can it be when the platter runs off a simple motor and a belt. Manufacturers today build on the cheap. Specifications say it all. Your 62L is pretty much the same in specs as mine plus Q Damping. I fully understand how you feel about it. Thanks for watching!!

Just checked your Numark out on the web, definitely a nice unit for the money, loaded with features that I'd never use though. It's nice and heavy like my Denon, spec wise a little inferior but yours is designed for DJ use, nice and rugged. For anyone not willing to fork out $900 for a top of the line Technics DJ table, this Numark is quite a nice substitute. I see there are many favourable reviews as well. Congrats on your purchase. That is one beautiful turntable Mark. Worth every penny. I do not really know much about specifications but the 'signal to noise ratio' {S/N} set at 76 dB is one of the highest I have ever heard of. I know you are suppose to look for speed variations, S/N and also playback speeds. I never knew that the stylus is supposed to be set at an angle or vertical tacking angle. The electronic braking is sweet. I agree with you regarding the semi automatic vs manual. comment one of two~ Rob

Comment two of two} I think you are talking me into these classic tables because it seems that there are a bunch of good models out there that were made very solid such as this Denon. I am very much impreseed with the weight of that model too. Plus like you stated it is very silent with no motor hum. The newer models do look nice but I think for all out features, the classic models may be better.> Thanks Mark, fantastic post~ Rob/Boston

Back in the 1970-1980's I sold audio and had various turntables from Dual, Thorens, JA Mitchel, Micro Seki and Lynn LP12. When CD, SACD, Lazerdisc, and DVD came out I left the audio business, got more into home theater and sold off my two channel system. My last turntable was a SOTA and I sold it and my record collection in 1995 for $400. Stupid Me! (I also sold a pair of Stax electrostatic headphones with a Stax head amp or $200 - Double Stupid Me !!!). As my Home Theater equipment grew and evolved into a complicated 13 channel Martin Logan system with 9 amps, 4 subs and all kinds of digital content, I longed for the simplicity of putting on a LP record and sitting down to enjoy an album. When vinyl started coming back, I saw the high prices online for the new turntables where anything under $2,000 looked really flimsy. My old SOTA, JA Michel and Lynn turntables were selling used for even more on audiogon. Back in the day, I always liked the Denon turntables and thought they were well built and a good value for a mid priced turntable (more expensive than mass market but not as pricey as high end). This summer I lucked out and found one in new condition for $545 (they usually go on ebay for about $800), put an Ortofon Black in it and have started collecting vinyl again. For about a grand, the combination beats anything new at double the price. Normally, I'd prefer belt drive, but to get this kind of build quality in a new or vintage table would cost 3x as much. You're right, there is nothing more sexy than beautiful wood on an audio component be it a turntable or tube amp. There is also a real joy to flipping through LP's at the used record store, finding an old favorite in mint condition, then taking it home for a long spin while reading the liner notes and appreciating the cover art. Kids today don't know what they're missing downloading compressed MP3's to play over earbuds from an iPhone. Now if I just had my old vinyl collection…..

Hey Randy. The cartridge is a Denon DL-160 which is the best match that I've found for this arm thus far. Unfortunaley, it has been discontinued so is hard to come by. Prior to this I used (still have) the Denon DL-110 which I guess could be called the little brother to the 160. There is very little difference between the 2. The 110 is readily available on e-bay most of the time. They are both MC as opposed to MM cartridges but high output so you don't need an MC preamp. Regards, Mark

Speaking of tonearms, the low mass tonearm on your Denon is actually much better than the other massive "S" tonearm. All you have to do is add some form of bob weight on the cartridge headshell if you're using a very compliant cartridge. I used to have an Infinity tonearm. It was so light that on a real low organ note I could actually see the modulation on the tonearms head. It was suggested, I believe, Stereophile magazine to add some weight on the headshell or wrap some solder on the tube close to the headshell. It did the job well. So, don't try to get the obsolete heavier tonearm. Save your money. Your tonearm is designed like the Sony tonearm on my PS-55. I fine tune the mass by adding weights on the head. Well, it didn't need it even with the Shure V 15 II. I wonder who copied who, but I tend to believe Sony came out with theirs first. I just checked eBay for the prices on Denons like yours. I can't afford to spend that kind of money considering I listen mostly on CD's through my P5 preamp

Appreciate your comments, and I like your definition of an audiophile. I suppose one could have the most expensive system and not be one, for example someone with a load of cash who only wants the best stuff, not necessarily really taking into account the improving of their sound as a reason to upgrade, but instead, "well I have the cash so why not?". Great comments overall. Thanks for watching!

Seems like you are obsessed with specification. I like to go out and listen to live performance, a brass band in the park, a concert in the Royal Albert Hall, a walk in the woods, and when I go home, listen to my home modified Technics SL-1210 MK2 (power transformer and switch unit removed and replaced with a toroidal 20V 5A (for the turntable drive) plus 15V-0-15V @0.5A - to power a built in phono amp, housed in a suitable die cast aluminium box well away from the turntable, because I had experienced hum/buzz in the original setup). My cartridge is an MC so I have also installed an MC head amp feeding the said phono amp so my turntable outputs a nice line level.This is fed amongst other signal sources via a passive preamp (remote control volume) to a JLH Higher Power Class A power amp feeding a very ancient pair of Yamaha NS-1000M. A very revealing (but unforgiving) set up but with good sources, absolutely engaging, delightful (powerful clean punchy bass, much better than a supposedly 200W Class AB amp that I had built prior to this, definitely my last effort in Class AB amps in my search for that clean and punchy bass).This is my basis for this argument.You have to listen using your ears, not read specifications. The Japanese are good with specifications because in general, they will specify in honesty what their test equipment states, but there will be a few that will sneak in a few better than average specification. You were given a pair of ears by your mother, and funnily enough these are the only things that matter at the end of the day. You don't go to a concert hall carrying a stack of oscilloscopes and microphones and say "Wow, that was a lovely performance".So don't go prophesising to our fellow readers that specifications is the way to go about choosing your equipment. IT IS NOT!! Use yours ears. That's what "God" gave you it for. Happy LISTENing!!!
@beninski707
@beninski707 7 жыл бұрын
WOW!! I just read this now. You have a nice set up and I guarantee you that all your pieces have very good to excellent SPECIFICATIONS whether you want them too or not. Your Technics is a prime example of that. Also, you chose n MC cartridge because it sounds better then you. Well Lo and behold, in general MCs have better specifications then MMs. You are right when you say that your ears are the best judge, I never argued that but specs are there to help you choose something that you are really going to enjoy. So many TTs of today are sold with no specs such as Regas. They don't publish speed variance specs (actually no specs at all) but you hear many cases of these units running fast. Wow and Flutter is something you can hear if it is bad enough and it happens on cheaper belt drive tables. Yours and mine are direct drive with awesome wow and flutter specs so we will never have that issue. Tables with low Signal to Noise Ratio (another spec) will have more background noise from platter/motor travelling through the stylus. Again my Denon and your Technics don't have that issue as the S/N ratio for both tables is very low. See what I'm getting at. No, Specifications are not the be all end all when deciding to buy a turntable but they can help steer you in the right direction and I believe all manufactures of today should publish them, good or bad.

Some Sony turntables are true semi automatic. The tone arm has its own motorized system and uses magnetic or electronic sensing device that does not exert any stylus loading. One good example is their PS-X55. The signal to noise ratio (rumble) is -78 db. However, I do love your Denon and I wish I had one.

+Ricardo A. Seneris Yes I know what you Mean as I have a fully automatic Technics SL-MA1 as well and the tone arm acts totally independent of the platter.

Owned a DP60L in the late eighties for a bunch of years. It replaced a Dual 721 and was replaced with a Thorens TD-320 in mid nineties. Last year ive gone back to q-lock DD with a Sony PS-X6. All this decks,if fitted with the appropriate cartridge offer excellent sound that leaves nothing to want imho. For me it was never a question of what driving principle is better but how well it is realised in a specific turntable. Imho actual products simply pale in comparsion. Unless you go very high in the pricelatter. I agree with you completly that vintage offers by a large margin the better bang for the buck,but i dont think that nowadays tonearm quality went up. Probably that is true for state of the art products,but certainly not for usual consumer stuff up to,say 1k. What is lacking today is whats back then was called the "solid middleclass",meaning priceworthy high quality products that offer some comfort functions. I mean what actually new high quality turntable offers the motor off/lift up function of the DP-60 or even a proper implemented semi automatic. Its not rocket science and was done perferctly well decades ago,so.....

Just checked out your Harmon Kardon on the internet. Looks to be quite a nice table. It's cool that it has quartz locked speed. Don't see many belt drives with that feature. Very Nice!

Lovely TT, I want one! As for you not being an audiophile due to money constraints... you, my friend, are indeed an audiophile! Unfortunately there are a few negative connotations with audiophiles (needing lots of money, buying OTT cables, etc), and really, 'audiophile' simply means being a Hi-Fi enthusiast, always seeking to improve sound reproduction. To do that we all take different paths. I, for example, don't buy into inch thick cables, wooden knobs, CD edge pens, pebbles, etc...
@DrCircuit
@DrCircuit 12 жыл бұрын
...but some people do, and good luck to them. Some have a limited budget (funnily enough this is a big reason for some people going down the vintage route), and some have a large budget (lucky buggers!), but we are all still seeking to improve sound reproduction, therefore we are all audiophiles.

@beninski707 Excellent video...two tonearms & 2 counterweights to fit any cartridge! Are you kidding me!? You definitely got your moneys worth...besides the fact that it sounds great, that is one handsome looking turntable. My friend has a Denon TT, not sure what model it is but he hardly ever used it & he's selling it...got to give him a call after watching this video. Thx for posting...like to hear it in action, play some vinyl.

I tell you between yourself and Ottavio, I feel like I have an audio class set up in the VC with component information that we can all use. These posts will come in handy to anyone who is trying to decide what kind of turntable to buy. As you know I have procrastinated for way to long already. Pro-Ject? Music Hall? Denon or Clearaudio? It is very discouraging. Thanks for helping me out Mark~ Rob

25:53 minutes to talk about a turntable? It deserves at least 1h! :) I love vintage audio. You miss JVC in the making of direct drive turntables, if you compare some high end Denon and JVC from the 80's you see the similarity. Love the switch tonearm and counter-weight feature, never know that! Great great turntable.

Awesome and beautiful ! How do you do cartridge alignment for this turntable ? This is more critical than v.t.a. Did you get an overhang gauge with it ? Disagree with your statement regarding specifications, 2 or 3 to be exact, will necessarily reveal the better table. There is a lack of specifications to cover every aspect of sound quality and a lack of standard methodology to measure. They do provide us with clues to keep in mind when comparing. Re: 10:20. This table could not be manufactured for a cost anywhere near $700 today. Advances in tonearms have proven cost efficient in delivering improved performance to entry level tables.Improvements in platters, bearings, motors, power supply, materials used, plinths, bracing, isolation come with a bigger price tag. Oh, and labour to manufacture more complex devices, instruments. You are a fortunate man to own this table. Properly setup, especially alignment, this table could really sing with some good amplification. Don't go the vintage route here. Modern amps, phono preamps are much improved. I think you are an audiophile because you appreciate and seek better sound. Also you have learned a lot about the hobby. Cheers

BlueHip Rascal Hey there. First off, thank you for your comments and input on my video. Yes, alignment is more critical than VTA and I do have a Denon overhang gauge that I use when new cart installation is required. A 100% level TT is also critical. Sorry, but my system is all vintage. I use a Yamaha C-2 pre amp with 3 phono inputs, 2MM and 1 MC (1978-79), a Pioneer SA8800 Amp (1978) and lastly Koss CM 1030 loud speakers from 1978. In their day these components were mid-high to high end. They all still perform beautifully so I have no real interest in buying anything new. Nothing against new but for what I'd seek in sound quality improvement, it would probably cost me an arm an a leg. Also too many times those dreaded 3 words pop up, "Made in China". Thanks again for watching, if interested in what my whole set up looks like check out my music room tour video. BTW, I've been around since 1960 so yeah, I've learned a bit.

At 720 that is still a deal. If you ever upgrade check out Funk Firm. Dynavector makes a 400$ MC cartridge that is pretty serious for the $. That is a beautiful Turntable you have there. The Pink Triangle and Funk Firm of the world are some of the best unknown- Linn killers(#1rated ever=Linn) the British made and still the best sounding turntables save crazy money.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a GOOD direct drive TT. I've never heard any mechanical noise whatsoever, even on cheaper models. I think one of the reasons they got bad reputations in the first place, is due to some people confusing them with the much older rim drive mechanism where motor hum was very common especially since those were A/C motors that were powered directly off house current (no transformer, etc). Back then, and I'm talking way before direct drive was even perfected and made common, belt drive would have been the way to go.

I have a Denon DP-52F, and it's similar to this one (78 dB signal to noise, .002% speed deviation, .01% wow and flutter- actually slightly better). Got it from my dad, who doesn't even know much about audio. Talk about luck.

I think you'd be doing quite well with the AT120E. Like the Denon DL-110, they both have a nude diamond stylus, no diamond bonded tip here. I haven't heard one but they get excellent reviews. I will say though that the DL 110 does have great sound and I find that it seems to sit in the groove a bit deeper because any groove wear, ticks, pops at the record surface seemed to be a little less audible. Check out ebay my friend, as I still see them pop up there for between (140-$160).
