Why I Love Pokemon X & Y

October 12th, 2013. Pokemon X/Y released worldwide (for the first time!) and its a very special game to me. It gets a lot of flack online, but now that it's 10 years old I wanted to hop on here and just talk about these games and reminisce about the good and the bad.

Gen 6 man... I had so many good memories with this game.... Getting my first job and buying my 3DS and my copy of Y... Being absent for 5 days to transfer all my Pokemon from Black and White, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver and seeing them all in 3D? Ah man just beautiful! Also Kalos was a fun region despite what people thought! Hell when Sun and Moon came out, I kept wanting to go back to Kalos since Alola was boring.

X and Y were the first Pokémon games I ever played. While I do agree with some of the criticisms they receive, it's not enough to prevent them from being some of my favorites. Part of that is probably just nostalgia, but even without the rose-colored glasses, there's still a lot I love about these games. One thing I think XY nailed was the setting. Every region has its own unique vibe, and I love them all (yes, even Galar and Paldea), but Kalos in particular just really appeals to me. Something about it just feels so cozy, I really don't know how else to describe it. Another thing I love about Kalos is how grand it feels. It's no larger in scale than prior regions, but the fact it was the first 3D region, as well as the amazing soundtrack, help make the world feel a lot bigger than it actually is. I specifically want to give a shout-out to Routes 8 and 15 - their themes are some of the most "adventurous-sounding" IMO. As for the story, I didn't think it was amazing, but I still liked it. I feel like part of the reason it gets so much flak is because Gen VI is sandwiched between what are arguably the two most story-heavy generations. Could the story have been improved by a hypothetical third version? Maybe, but I still enjoyed what we got nonetheless. The highlight for me was definitely Team Flare. The grunts and scientists weren't very memorable, but Lysandre is one of my personal favorite antagonists. Granted, I like Lysandre more in concept than in execution. He could've been built up a bit more, but the fact that an E-rated game was somehow allowed to have a villain whose goal is *literal genocide* is absolutely crazy. He's basically the Pokémon version of Thanos, and that's just awesome. Lysandre may not be the most well-written villain, but I think he makes up for it through sheer intimidation factor (especially his USUM counterpart, since he's from a universe where he actually succeeded in wiping everyone out. That's some dark stuff for a Nintendo game.) Another character I wanna mention is AZ. For what little screentime he got, he certainly left a lasting impression. He has such an interesting backstory, and the scene where he reunites with Floette is genuinely one my favorite moments in the whole series. It never fails to get me emotional. Anyway, that's enough rambling from me. I just wanna say, with how much negativity there is in the fandom these days, it was refreshing to see an actually positive Pokémon video for once. As someone who doesn't dislike any of the mainline games, it's nice to see the less popular entries get some recognition once and a while.

I was 17 when XY was announced. There was something special about that trailer. It really felt like we were entering an entirely new era of pokemon after everything feeling kinda the same for the 14 years previous that i had been following the series. I remember waking up at 4 AM to watch the trailer live on my phone, rewatching it and thinking about it nonstop throughout the day and week following. It came out when I went to college that year and kind of defined that entire year for me. Although in retrospect the games were not that great, they were definitely a symbol of a moment in time and I will forever cherish these games for that. That feeling has not even come close to returning for any game since then, and my interest in the series has sadly diminished as I have become older and the games have become more stale.

Man X and Y just felt so hyped. From its announcement to its release, everything just felt so exciting and positive. I don’t think the games that came after had such an exciting lead up to it’s release. Man 2013 was awesome. These games deserved their upgraded versions and it’s such a tragedy we never got to play them.

X/Y were quite literally what brought me back to the franchise. My interest had been warning as far back midway through my first playthrough of R/S, but I kept wth the series all the way up until B2/W2 ended up being the first time I ever skipped a game. Which isn't to fault those two games. I've always heard nothing but praise for them, they just weren't what I wanted and I felt for the first time I was maybe over Pokémon... ...then the first trailer for X/Y landed, and suddenly all my passion came back to life. I was eager for these next games in a way I'd forgotten I could be, and my hype only grew with each new reveal. I won't claim they are perfect games, but they might be the foundation of the best generation mechanically. A foundation further refined and improved by OR/AS and which maybe could have been perfected if there had been any kind of actual Z version. Nothing since has compared. The closest anything else has ever came was Legends Arceues, but even that was more of a tentative optimism that things could still improve, not the overwhelming enthusiasm X/Y originally gave me.

Kalos is special for me because it was the first time I got to experience new pokemon game hype season and it was probably the last time before the pokemon community turned into an active warzone. Also a new type and mega evolutions kinda make it magical like if pokemon was trying to evolve

I was 16 when these games were announced and 17 when they released. I was very hyped for these games and couldn't wait to play Y, the one I chose at that time. The day before they released my parents and I moved across the country. I had a pre-order for it at a store in my new hometown. So the day of release I had to find my way through an unknown city to get my copy of a game. I had put my phonecharger in one of the moving boxes, so I couldn't check Google Maps or anything. Just getting the game became an adventure in itself. Later I bought X as well and I spent a combined total of about 500 hours on them during that time. These games are forever cemented among my favourite games of all time.

I've never related to an opinion about X/Y as much as this. I was 13 when this game was announced and it was all I could think about. Truly one of the most fun generations - especially because of the online play with the PSS. I think 40% of my playtime must've come from Wonder Trade alone.

this game is just so much fun! i grew up playing the og pokemon games, Blue/Red, Gold/Silver, and then went on to put so many hours into Fire Red, Emerald, and Heartgold. even though i haven't gotten past the berry farm in x and y, the gameplay is fun and the visuals are stunning. it's far from perfect but it has a lot of pros versus cons. it's definitely my favorite 3ds pokemon game by far. im currently playing it again now that im able to and made it to the berry farm. im fighting every urge in my soul to just stay at the farm and make so many berries at once because i so badly want to continue on with the story. sometimes i still can't believe i was 17 when this game came out

I absolutely share that sentiment with how it felt playing those games back in the day. You mentioned Dookieshed, but man do you remember the NateWantsToBattle reaction to the mega Mewtwo and Blaziken megas? Truly one of the funniest videos of that time. Shame it doesn't exist anymore. I miss Corocoro too. I got so into it when ORAS was on the way. Know what. Before online shuts down, I'm gonna dust off my 3DS and my copies of the games and just get a few last Wonderlockes in... Because I'll never be able to do those again in several months. 2013... Where did that time go

This is the last game I played the hell out of competitively. It was truly a great experience. Oras was good too. I played Pearl a ton too and soul silver, but I agree the multiplayer in this game really made this game stand out

I remember sitting in my desk in 4th grade drawing sylveon and yveltal. During the era of countdown to x and y videos waiting for different leaks. The game eventually came out when I was in 5th grade and I remember going to Toys r us after school on a Friday with my dad to get figures of the starters.

I'm a gen 1 kid, and X & Y were the games that got me back into the series. I don't care if they feel incomplete or lacked certain things, they were the first Pokemon games that felt genuinely NEW in a long time.

The same could be said about Gen 2 before it was remade. There was a lot of stuff planned for it, but because of technological limitations all of that couldn't be added in or wasnt able to work. Then once it was remade in Gen 4, all of those things that were planned were phased in with other various content and quality of life improvements. The only thing that wasn't added back into those remakes were the slots, just because PEGI had to make a huge stink the whole thing past the late-2000s marker.

I was 17 when this came out. The first time I ever actually went to a midnight release for a game at my local Walmart. It’ll always hold a special place in my heart because of that. I also was a day 1 Froakie fan. Love frogs. The Anime just made Greninja that much better. Throw in Mega Charizard, Lucario, and Ampharos become a dragon type? Wow. Then Xerneas…a legendary stag who gives Life. Speaking to me on all levels. My favorite games.

As an ardent advocate for the Wii U, I'll always turn up for celebration of it and its content, so I await when you do that Pokemon Rumble U content and anything else on the Wii U. Due to personal problems keeping me from what I've wanted to get to for years, I'm dramatically behind on things like games I want to play. I think I had interest in gen 6 ever since I heard about it, but the first time I played any of it was ink 2022 and I've still barely played any of it. Still, I've looked into it and consumed some Let's Plays and retrospectives of it and looked through the Kalos Dex, so I think I know more than a bit about X & Y. Even though I don't have that much personal experience with gen 6, I know what it's like to like something that many people dump on, so I know how nice it feels to find other people who appreciate it. For me, I think the main factor that makes a mainline Pokemon game good, or bad is the selection of 'mon in the first 1/3 of the game being diverse and 'mon I'd want to invest my time and effort into raising. For that reason, I'd actually make the bold, unpopular claim that Kalos is the third best, only after Alola and Pokemon Platinum. I'm surprised that you think Kalos' Dex is middling in retrospect, since several people I've heard from, including Poketubers, consider Kalos' new 'mon overall the best. They think you get the most bang for your buck; not that many new 'mon, but nearly all of them are great. I will not stand for all this Carbink slander! Haha, naw, it's just that I like that they decided to start incorporating mythology into their *Rock* type Pokemon. Carbuncle is a great source from which to draw inspiration. 8 min 56 sec Don't you mean Kalos just has that _je ne sais quoi_ ? I think the main criticisms of X & Y are the difficulty being too easy, the characters being kind of one-note and the pacing being all over the place. I agree with those, but the characters being one-note can be forgiven if you manage to immerse yourself and imagine you're really on the adventure (which I understand could be more difficult due to the characters being kind of flat). I actually dislike Mega Evolution and much prefer Z Moves, but I like Z Moves for "all the wrong reasons". I like Alola's gimmick due to it being so easy to ignore. I like the player-character customization in X & Y, too. I'm kind of role-playing in my file of X, even giving my character a French name. Man, you didn't talk about petting and feeding your precious little Pokemon! That's a really fun feature!

I have mixed feelings for these games. After playing Black 2 earlier in the year, Pokemon X and Y were my first "real" pokemon games. I believe I played over 400 hours of Pokemon Y. My hall of fame team was Delphox, Dedenne, Blaziken, Venusaur, Yveltal, and Simipour (I guess I just needed an okay water type). I put Dedenne on my team because it was my favorite pokemon. I was excited to catch it the moment I saw it in the prerelease (to this day, Dedenne's still my favorite pokemon). It was fun, though I wish I would've played in the Battle Maison more. It would've been cool for 12-13 year-old me to improve my skills. Regardless, I spent a majority of my time grinding money and shiny hunting. It's not my favorite pokemon game, but it was cool.

I get that the games have their problems and are lacking in quite a few areas, but the games absolutely EXCEL in presentation, having beautiful graphics, and amazing music, plus, Kalos is such a gorgeous and rich region to travel through! First Pokémon game with character customization, added the Fairy type, the new Pokémon introduced, while not a lot, there were a lot of really good ones, absolutely tear-jerking ending, etc. Yes, the games are VERY easy, but still super fun, plus Pokémon has always been easy, and there’s something satisfying about cutting through bosses like a hot knife through butter. Makes me feel powerful. Also, pretty cool message: Even though the greedy of nature of humans will cause the world to decay, we can come together and forge a bright path for ourselves in the meantime (I think that’s the message, idk)

It’s nice to see someone else think that XY were good! Gen 5 (BW) were by far my favorites and I only think XY gets so much hate because it came off the heels of Gen 5. Yes, XY were not perfect but I feel they were not perfect in the same way that DP were not perfect. The unfortunate reality is that XY never got its “Platinum Version” because I feel like it would have been one of the greatest games if it did. But in addition to being the first 3D games, it introduced so many other GREAT things like you mentioned in the video: - megas - PSS and better online features in general - fairy type - amie (was actually kinda cool) - wonder trades Gen 6 honestly was a pretty solid generation overall when you add in ORAS as well… cannot say the same for every generation after. I was 14 and just starting high school when XY came out so I have a lot of nostalgia but I also honestly believe these games are overhated. They are honestly good pokemon games and I cannot wait for a remake/eventual pokemon Z.

I started with Emerald, been playing Pokemon for 18 years, and Gen 6 is a top 3-4 gen for me. I understood the flaws of these games but they have so many good points (region and pokemon are excellent) makes up for it. I just hope one day these games will get their fair shake. I would add I hope IF they ever visit Kalos again it would be more of a sequel rather than a remake.

I gave away my original copy of Y to my friend years ago, so i dont know my original team. HOWEVER! In honor of Y being my first ever pokemon game, I bought another copy and replayed it with my now decade's worth of Pokemon experience under my belt. I loved every minute of it, with my MVPs being King the Tyrantrum (Dragon/Rock is so good oml) and Ringo the Gogoat. Shockingly i didnt use my Greninja often. I also used Aegislash for the first time, and boy is a swords dance/nightslash sweep satisfying. I don't care what anyone says, X and Y are great games.

As someone who’s older, I thought they were average games (linear, not enough/any(?) alternate paths, not enough new Pokémon and too many old mixed in to even find the new ones), but had some highlights. Stuff like the new type, mega evolutions, but also visual effects on moves looked nice and the camera was dynamic. Pokémon games’ camera after the 3DS is so static and disappointing. More importantly though, the I found the monster designs in X/Y were great again. 1-3 were great, 4 was meh, and 5 was so bad that when I saw the leaked Pokédex, it was easy to pick out a team because there were so few I even liked. Didn’t know it was supposed to be a soft reboot, which explains why so many look like cheap knock-offs of other Pokémon. Don’t recall if I saw all of the leaked Pokémon for X/Y (definitely saw some), but I was happy to see so many great designs again. The designs make up a huge part of why I enjoy this series, and it would’ve been 5-10 years since I was last excited about them. I rarely replay Pokémon games (not counting remakes), but X/Y had so many great ones, I felt I could replay it again with a whole new team and enjoy it.

I don't get why people criticize sun and moon I love the legendaries they are way better then the x and y legendaries and also the story was better. Now it does suck there were not gyms but you can not deny that it was not a fun mechanic and they really did stick to the hawaii theme which I think was really cool. Also the the sun and moon remake ultra sun and moon was amazing it gave a way better story and the overall gameplay was improved.

To me, the issues with X and Y didn't have much to do with the games themselves. What was there was fine, it just needed some more time in the oven. Like most games in the period from Gen 6 to today, it just seems rushed, and at times, incomplete. I'm still upset they never made a Z version.

For the PSS i just want to clear up for you the reason they didnt keep that is the insane overhead and cost of such a thing. It just doesnt make sense for a company trying to profit which is sad because it was super user friendly. Sadly economics don't care about user friendliness.

I think this game gets a bit of a bad rap or criticism because it was "too easy," but the game has a lot of redeeming qualities like the online features you mentioned. Plus the creativity was still there. I also think the creativity was still there with ORAS and Sun and moon (though they are not perfect and still a bit flawed). The real downfall of pokémon games was ultra sun and moon where the creativity was gone and games were lazy and rehashed.

I have similar memories even though my first games were gen 4 (platinum specifically was my first) gen 6 brought me back I had skipped gen 5 mostly because I watched the first episode of the anime and didn’t give the games a chance because of it played the gen 5 games before omega ruby and alpha sapphire came out but I remember every day checking youtube to see if munching orange or tyranitair tube or Many other channels had uploaded a video covering the news or leaks of the games but I love gen 6 it was the first pokemon game i completed the regional dex yes the entire regional dec the largest to date in a pokemon game I’ve done that in multiple games since and anyways The music of the game is pure nostalgia to be I also think it’s the first time I was hyped for a game I was 12 (I was born in July 2001) and probably the next time I experienced this kind of hype was FNAF 2 and 3 and it didn’t happen again until tears of the kingdom

Well X&Y had the worst customization in my opinion bc they only gave 3 skin tone options when now we have 4 which is still not enough but I can see why it worked for you, hopefully everyone will be able to see themselves in Pokémon one day.

wasn't there a tri-type leak ??? i remember seeing that on pokebeach love these games, a lot of unjust hate and if you factor out SwSh's DLC, they're my favorite 3D mainline games

I loved the addition of fairy type i thought the move to 3d in this was good. I loved mega evolution. I really enjoyed the region and routes, but man were these games piss easy and very little post game

I adored gen 6, but it was so badly mishandled… gen 7 got shoved out the door, which was a generation that I really didn’t like, and the Kalos arc was never finished.

X was my first mainline game. It still has the best online function. Gen 6 xy and oras were the last good games. Feel free to disagree.

You need to be able to move past your first experience bias. My first Pokémon game was Blue in 1999. I do not laud it as the best or my favorite. It is important to me but I like the other games I’ve played since then.

Uh...Pokemon X&Y were not my first Pokemon games. Platinum was. So Platinum, HGSS, BW and BW2 all played at release until I got X&Y.
