@@gmbntech thanks, would be superInteresting to have the same about Marzocchi and Manitou ✌ They both have such a rich history and influence during the dawn of MTBing, and later. I think the 2nd ever created suspensionFork, after the RS1, was the Manitou1, even without an Elastomer-stack, but with ONE long elastomer in the left and right side 😁 and the Manitou M3 was a sheer CNC-machined beauty, unparalled til this day.

I was living in Utah in 1996 and saved to get a ROCK SHOX Judy XC. 63mm of elastomer travel and I felt I could conquer anything. Had never experienced anything like that before.

The first set of Rock Shox I ever tried were literally the first set of Rock Shox. I used to ride with Paul Turner fairly regularly starting in 86 or 87 in Nisene Park near his shop after he introduced me to mountain biking and helped me buy my first bike, a Bianchi Grizzly, and he started developing the forks some months after that. I got to try the prototype in the parking lot outside his shop in Soquel, CA on some parking lot blocks he had borrowed from other parking spaces in the complex. They were amazing even then at soaking up a hit that would have stopped you or at least killed your momentum without them. Later I was at the Long Beach show where they introduced them on the Kestrel Nitro full suspension bike. In retrospect I think it would have been better to show Rock Shox separately on regular bikes as that Nitro seemed like Sci Fi to people at the time. The forks were fully functional though. In early development Paul had a lockout control on his handlebars as early skeptics felt that the forks would steal pedaling energy, which was counter to physics, but he felt it necessary to kill that criticism before it went too far. Also the original design fork leg stickers were green on the word Rock and pink on Shox. I still have an early version he sent me that has the "wrong green" that I could never figure out what to stick to. I got a set of forks from the second production run of 150, so that was the first set I've owned. I have a newer set on my current Santa Cruz 5010.

Awesome story bud. Love the founding fossils. When I used to walk both ways uphill to school, the bike industry was mad scientists who were so brilliant and quirky. People like John Parker of Yeti, or Doug Bradbury of Manitou. Jack Witmer of Cooks brother racing. Passion and ingenuity. It was like being party of the wild west. A special time in our sport. New ideas and designs were a blur of innovation. The craftsmanship that came out of that era was mind blowing.

I think the original SID’s are my favourite looking fork of all time. I remember when they were launched, they instantly became the XC fork of choice for all the pro’s unless you happened to ride for Cannondale… I think the original Boxxer pro’s come a close second with the white and red scheme, they also became the choice of the DH pro’s pretty much overnight! It really was a golden era for the sport.

Good forks, it's just a shame that they've made spares and instructions less available for each iteration of the charger damper. Can't replace the bushings in the lower casting either.

Really great video Doddy. More of this please GMBN! Nothing to write home about for me, but a pair of Dart 3's on my first proper MTB way back in 2010 on my Trek 6300. Transformed how I saw a bicycle, and getting out there to spend time in Mid Wales (Nant-yr-Arian etc) was mindblowing. I spent a fair chunk of my student loan on it, but it was worth every penny, and life changing. Amazing.

One of your best videos yet, Doddy! Genuinely an incredible job telling the story. I still remember my first salvage yard rebuild and finding a used Judy to replace the rigid fork on a Trek 820. I recently bought the Specialized S-WORKS Enduro LTD ASX w/Flight Attendant. This suspension system is beyond "rocket science". You have to personally experience it.

I was one of the many that got their first taste of suspension thanks to Rock Shox. Late 90's, lovely pair of the blue Indy C forks proudly bolted onto the front of my Claud Butler! Loved them and also felt like I'd joined "the club". Had a fair few pairs of Rock Shox over the years and my current bike is rocking a pair of lyrics up front and a super deluxe coil out back.

I am a similar age to you Daddy and grew up with the evolution of Rockshox . Amazing and the only fork to buy by and large until Fox come along. Other than some Mazzochi Z1 it was all I used until the early 2000s of which I had Fox forks. However I will agree Rockshox are one of the most iconic and important things that ever happened to mountain biking and continue to evolve and push the boundaries of technology. I upgraded my purple anodized GT RTS-3 from a Quadra 10 to a Judy XC in 96. I immediately noticed a big difference. I still ride Rock Shox forks to this day. I have a black SID air on my Trek Fuel, and a Judy XL on my Titus. I'm so glad to see this channel giving credit where it's due. I'd been away for a year from Santa Cruz to go to Portland for culinary school in '94 when I got my first set of OG Judys with the plastic damper cartridges. They lasted one ride and I replaced them with the alloy ones in the apartment living room and rode on into the future. Later, back in Santa Cruz I was a member of The ABS race team and on and off employee of Another Bike Shop. Back then Rock Shox was about six? blocks down Swift street on the right so the team literally got the product; off the ship, off the truck, put the pros forks in the mail, then driven up the block to delivery at the shop. I got my first DHO before Steve Peat did. I never went as fast mind you, but First! Then I became obsessed with the pro only single crown DHO that was a pro only slalom fork with the 20mm axle DHO lowers on a single crown Judy DH platform. So I grabbed/bought every trash bin DHO and Judy DH and JudyXL and never again had a quick release fork. I still have a few sets and actually got my only magazine cover rocking a pair doing an x up abubica. The new Psylos were in the shop with damper problems.

Just installed my 19th Rockshox fork in my riding career. The first one was a '95 Judy, with a Rissie Gem cartridge and coil springs and the latest is a 2023 Pike Ultimate.

Great vid, love these docu style vids. I love what this brand has done for the industry, my first suspension fork was a Quadra10, and at the time Primal Scream were in the charts with get your "Rocks" off single the 90s were a great time for bikes products and development. Though whilst working in a typically rainy West of England bike shop that sold and serviced RockShox in their earlier years, I regularly had to pour water from the fork stanchions before most services and this was prior to power washes being a thing. Because of this I personally chose (after my 2nd set of short travel elastomer forks = Pace RC35) the European Marzocchi air/oil forks for all my bikes due to the better fork seals for our climate and their motorbike pedigree. I still run Bombers on my eBike, but now seriously lust after some Ohlins now that Fox own Marzocchi and i expect development will be focused on the drier climates as it has a larger customer base.

Quadra was my first suspension fork as well. It came on the first new bike I had ever bought at the time which was a Trek 930 single track. I quickly upgraded to mag 21's though. Absolutely phenomenal video. I hadn’t properly realised how influential rock shox had been to my riding until this. My first mountain bike had rockshox judy’s and I rode them for years. Eventually about 15 or 20 years after they were made I eventually snapped the brace at a skate park. I still firmly believe they were the best forks I ever had, almost no adjustment, but perfect anyway. Predictable as the tides, and just as reliable.

My first air fork was a Rockshox Recon. Abosolutely loved it and it was far better than the stock Suntour coil fork that came on my first 'mountain' bike. Then I bought a full suspension, and put the Recon on that, and it's still on that bike to this day. I still try to run Rockshox suspension on my bikes. My hardtail has a 35 on it, but my full sus that I bought recently came with a 36 Elite and DHX2 Factory on it. I would've replaced the shock on it with a Super Deluxe but I found a really good deal on a Float X2, and I hope to replace the fork with a Zeb. Both of my riding buddies have Yari forks and Deluxe shocks on their bikes. One of them had a 2006 Lyrik on his old bike, which was actually still really good.

I did a test ride on a Merida Al-BON-TECH back in very early 90s... i always thought they were Judy's but not so sure anymore. Regardless they bottomed out and i had a hysterical OTB... i rode rigid for a few years after that, including first Grundig World cup in norway until my 20 year hiatus. Started riding agian now in 2016, still have rigid bikes, but i also have a full sus with RS super deluxe on which i love to bits. Thanks for an awesome lookback Doddy, very well done!

An OG rider here. I started in 1990 on a GT Timberline (anyone remember their bull horn bars?) with the iconic Quadra fork. I loved it so much I converted a salvaged Quadra in to a bike shop lamp. RockShox will forever be synonymous with mountain biking. That logo, just F’ING brilliant! RIDE ON!

Great video, learned something again. They were cool back in the day. My favourite was the SID SL with gold stanchions and sparkle blue sliders. However, the soul got sucked out if the company when they were bought by SRAM as it happens with every company SRAM buys. The OEM business got most important and the forks went black and grey. Remember the time when frame colours followed Rock Shox colours? Also no more spares and service for end users which makes everything SRAM a no go for me.

Great vid Doddy, there are so many things about RS that I'd forgotten about, I was more of a Manitou boy, having has 2's, 3's, Mars, Xvert, Xvert carbon DH, Sherman, with some Marzocchi and a few sets of Pace forks thrown in, I don't know why but I always seemed to avoud RS untill I bought my YT Feffsy a few years ago and it came with Pikes....OMG they were amazing, I now have Lyriks on my Kona and love them but always wonder how the other manufacturers forks feel.

My very first Rock Shox was a Judy XLC, which I bought as a schoolboy with a holiday job. At that time it cost under 1000 Marks in Germany. Since then I have only used Rock Shox and have always had great experiences with the products and the service. Today I ride a Nomad V4 with the ZEB on 180 mm. Always the best decision for me and will certainly remain so!

I have rockshox xx series front and rear on gt zaskar carbon 2011. Although people have newer bikes, I can still out perform them. This bike has been a treasure to ride with Xtr 9000 brakes + gears. Admitadly. I service my bike every month. Ceramic speed bearings throughout and white industries cld hubs. Yeah I love my bike.

The first really good mountain bike fork I bought was the Argyles you mentioned. Had them on a Kona Stuff. Currently got a ‘19 Trek slash with the Yari up front. I believe it’s fairly similar to the Lyrik and you can upgrade the damper to further enhance it, though it’s actually pretty good for an average rider like me anyway!

My first fork was a Jett back in 2000, followed shortly by a hand-me-down Judy from a friend. After that, a Pike RCT3 Solo in 2016, and now a 2021 Pike Ultimate. I'll admit, I do prefer the feel of my EXT and Fox forks, but RS will always hold a special place in my heart.

My first RockShox was that beautiful Blue, 60mm SID, which came on my 1998 Diamond Back V8. Wonderful shock which I wore out the bushings. Race season was going so I replaced the SID with a Duke. My V8 is still a fun ride. My two Salsa's have SID & YARI Rockshox.

My first Rock Shox forks were the Judy SL. I have had the red Judy Race forks. My full sus has the Sektor Silver in 130mm. It also has the Monarch RT3 Debonair. Which I changed from the Monarch R. M hardtail has the Recon Silver RL in 140mm travel.

The Pike is the fork. Not too pricey but can tackle Xc through to enduro very happily. Absolutely the perfect fork.

Doddy, you are a bit wrong what the versions of the initial Pike are concerned. There was a coil U-Turn, an air U-Turn and the Dual Air, I have the latter. 454 stood for something else, it was the top version with all the adjustments and the hollow crown, the 426 had all of that minus the light crown and the 409 had fewer external adjustments. The cool thing, though, is for what those numbers stood. In that era, RockShox used the displacement number in cubic inches of some legendary muscle car engines from the 60's and 70's. The 454 is the legendary ”Rat Motor” that graced the '70 Chevelle, the 426 stands for the legendary Hemi from Dodges and Plymouths and 409 was the Chevy engine that the Beach Boys wrote a song for. We also had the 351, which was the Ford Cleveland engine from the Boss Mustang, and the 318, a Chrysler small block that found its way on the Dart, Duster, Valiant and Barracuda. Oh, and the 302 small block, from the Trans-Am Mustangs. I also believe there was a 335 Recon OEM on certain bikes and that must be another Ford, bur not as cool as the ones above. This is one of my favourite MTB easter eggs! Cheers!

I remember meeting the engineer that designed the Judy........Dave the Judy Guy is what they called him. My favorite RS fork was the 2001 SID SL and a PUSHED Tuned Revelation

I cycled by you on the FoD Freeminers trail when you were filming this video, ironically on my fully rigid Marin. I don't own anything suspension and don't know if I ever will; maybe because I'm old and seem to be content cycling the red & blue trails with little inclination to ride the faster, jumpier downhill trials that would necessitate suspension. However, I found the video interesting.

judy xc back in 2019 when i converted my fully rigid specialized hardorck and then confirmed the headtube was cracked so didnt have them long before braking the bike down to be sold as parts and chucked the frame in the bin (well local tip/recycling)

My first pair of Rock Shox came on an old Schwinn Mesa gsx I think they were the Indys. Now I'm still riding an old pair of Rock Shox Dukes on my Rocky Mountain Element from the early 2000s. ✌👍🚲
