Something that foreigners do not know is that in Bolivia, when you ask for something to drink anywhere, you must specify that you want "sugar-free" (sin azúcar) otherwise they will always put sugar in your juice, tea or coffee. This is because the local customer prefers it that way. If you feel like having a coffee in the central square (plaza central - Santa Cruz) from de walking man with his coffe car, you have to clearly order it saying "sin azúcar por favor" (without sugar), then u get what you want.

I lived there 67-68 across the street from a university of technical college(?), on the Avenida Central(?). I watched them play futbol a lot. A long time ago so it is fuzzy. We had a 30 foot driveway, a big iron gate(and iron bars on windows) and brick wall in front and back with 7 types of fruit in our yard. The road was still dirt, with mostly ox-carts, and the hexagonal tiles were down the street slowly coming towards us. I remember a circus in Spanish. All around us was poverty. It was the summer home for German ambassador and my Dad was head of Agric. for USARMY. We came down right after Guevarra was captured I think that summer. The school I went to was run by Gulf oil where most Americans worked then. We were among the first to ever visit El Fortero at Samaipata. We went to a sugar factory also. The poisonous toads in my yard when it rained. All the hummingbirds around the hibiscus in front yard. A dead tarantula at the foot of my bed one morning. The vinchucas. and El Dia de la Mono(?)?. The trips to the outward villages for church with missionary friends. But the southern sky at night, was worth it all, seeing the Southern Cross (La Cruz), and the Coal sack every night . Then we moved to Panama for two more years. Back to USA then back to Panama again 72-73.Great times.

I liked your video Ollie! Enjoy my city that I have not lived there much but in other countries and in general the entire Bolivia is so beautiful and the people is so nice! By the way saltenas are from Potosi or La Paz I’m not sure but you eat it all over Bolivia and are delicious and it even is sold in NY and it was in The NY Times as one of the recommended foods.
