Something to keep in mind - the 100mm canon version, which can be adapted to sony E, has electronic aperture coupling. This means that even when using F11, you can focus at F2.8 and the lens will only close down when taking the shot if desired, making focussing much easier at super close macro distances.

Hi Micael - An excellent video, and I've seen you develop as a macro photographer, and I really like the way you've settled on this simplified approach, and are giving such excellent advice. I've spent lots of time working on light modification, and actually invented the concept of "concave diffusers" now used all around the world. Although truth be told I now tend to often use quite simple light modifiers and lightweight flashes. The cheap commercial diffuser you are using does give excellent lighting and I first used one a long time back. One advantage of the 60mm over the 100mm is the closer working distance does tend to give better lighting from the flash, as the closer the diffuser is to the subject, the more diffuse the light. I've not used either Laowa lens yet, as I still use DSLRs. I agree with you about the Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x macro, which I've been using for about 12 years now. It's a great lens, but it's very limiting when you come across a butterfly or dragonfly, and have to either change lenses, carry to set ups (which I have) or just miss the opportunity. So a lot of the time now I use the Canon 60mm f2.8 USM with an extension tube. www.flickr.com/photos/steb1/

Yeah it is fun to experiment with different solutions for light and diffusion, but this simple setup is the one that has given me the best results and most convenient photo walks yet :)
@stephenbarlow2493

@@MicaelWidell - Yes, after lots of experience I've come to the same conclusion, simple is best. I've always done photo walks, and you never know what you're going to encounter. So a flash set up as to be simple, versatile i.e. at various distances and magnifications, and give reliable light.

Hello Micael, do you know the exact weight of the Laowa 60mm and 100mm? In my online research I found that the 60mm weights 500gramms and the 100mm about 640gramms. Thats not much more lightweight is it? Or is the data I found wrong? I really consider buying one of them; if the 60mm is just 140gramms lightweighter than the 100mm, I would go with the 100mm :) Peace and Love :)

Macro ring flashes never gave me good results, probably because the flash is too close to the subject, making it hard to diffuse in a proper way. The images just don’t look beautiful. The light looks too industrial and harsh. Also a ring flash is clumsy and makes the camera front heavy. And expensive.

I think you say it's designed for APS-C cameras (I have a Canon APS-C, the 760D) but another KZbinr says then it has a 3x magnification (I guess more accurately 2 x 1.6 = 3.2?) Is this correct? It is made for APS-C but works well on full frame for macro. It has 2x magnification. But sure, 2x on aps-c is similar to 3x on full frame, when it comes to image framing (pretty logical when you think about it - when you crop in on a photo, as a crop sensor does, you get a larger subject in the frame)

Hi Micael, i started in photography a few months ago and i would like to introduce me on macro. could you recommend me some budget lens to start? i was looking for the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM? Regards from Chile!

I think the Laowa 60mm is a good choice - same price as the Sigma but 2x magnification. But if you really want autofocus then buy the Sigma, it is a great choice.

@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 4 жыл бұрын

Appreciate the video! Short question: Would you rather buy the Canon EF 100mm 2.8 Macro (450dollar) if you already carry around a 2x iii converter anyways or the Laowa 100mm 2.8 (500dollar)? It's intended for macros only

Hi Micael, I know this is an old video. I got this lens, EF mount on my canon 90 D.. I have my settings exactly as you prescribed, shutter speed 250, iso 100, lens set to F8. I also, based on your recommendation (Yes, I am a fan of your channel and listen to your advice) got the GODOX V350 Flash that I set to 1/16, yet all my macro photos are very very dark even when taking them outside. I am using a flash diffuser (not one you recommended) but I doubt that's the issue.. Any advice or tips. When I put the flash on TTL it works great, but then I can not focus stack and I really want to try that
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 2 ай бұрын
The only thing I can think of is that your diffuser is too thick or made in a way so that the flash light does not reach the subject very well. Anyway, just increase iso to 200 and you should still get nice photos.

How does the glass compare to the Pergear 60 2.8? It looks almost identical. I've been using the pergear for dslr scanning, but the pin-cushioning is so awful, I end up cropping out a good amount of the edges.
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 7 ай бұрын
They are pretty similar. I would say the Laowa is perhaps slightly better built - no oil leakage and the aperture scale is correct. But in terms of what you get for the money, the Pergear is better value, at least if you get the mk2 version. The Laowa also has distorsion - none of them are great for scanning negatives.

I really enjoy watching your videos... I'm trying to research what to buy for my first macro lens and initially, I'm leaning towards Tokina 100mm macro but watching this I am now greatly considering Laowa... I just can't decide yet between the 60mm or the 100mm.. I own a Sony aps-c camera and I would like to use the lens for both macro and portraits and general photography. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that the Laowa 100mm macro is more versatile compared to the 60mm not considering the weight..

The 100mm is slightly more versatile on a full frame camera as you can shoot into long distances without any vignetting.

He said if you use a FOCUS RAIL on a tripod and a remote shutter or delay shutter setting. Sometimes certain features can make things worse and not always better. If handheld it probably would help though.
