Why do I love the Springfield M1A Scout Squad Rifle, a gun based on a design from the 50s? It's not just nostalgia; it's the classic silhouette, the perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality, and the versatile 18" barrel.
It fires the powerful .308 round, balancing modernity with timeless appeal.
Despite its flaws, this rifle speaks to me on an irrational, guttural level.
Discover why the M1A Scout Squad is a must-have for any gun enthusiast! Watch now to see why this rifle is so special!
Also, Because Father's Day is coming up, we're having a PewPewLife Father's Day sale!

Wow that muzzle brake really works. I remember shooting the M14 in the army on full auto and by the third shot you were shooting at the sky. Funny story - they once had us train to shoot at aircraft by using an RC flying wing. I put my M14 on auto and dropped it on the first pass. Put a bullet through the engine and they only had one engine thinking that nobody would ever hit the engine but brought extra wings. I ruined everyone's training that day.

I bought a SOCOM 16 when they first came out 20 years ago, wanted something that would avoid the AWB restrictions while living behind enemy lines in the People's Republik of Massachusetts. Topped it with a Leopold scout scope on quick detach rings and it's been my SHTF ever since.

I would argue you still has it better than us living in the California Province of Communist Internecion. IMHO the M1A scout is one of the best rifles for if SHTF. If you only have one rifle you want versatility, dependability, and ammo you can find very commonly used (308). Now the 308 is a great choice because it’s a hard hitting round and very commonly used. Can turn cover into concealment. I know people will say it’s to heavy. Well from my experience as a combat vet with the 82nd and humping around M240B around Iraq it’s definitely a lot lighter. M240 weights at 27 pounds M1A scout weights at 8.8 pounds call it 9.5 with an optic. Definitely doable. The M1A can shoot great with iron sights at short to intermediate range Short 100-300 meters Intermediate 400-600 meters easy anything farther becomes more of an area target and should reconsider. Mine is set up very basic with a scout scope (Burris 2x7-32) magnification. I like the scout scope because it’s easy positive identification and target acquisition. Allows for both eyes to be open and get better peripherals and situational awareness. But to be fair whatever is your preferred rifle no matter the cost. Get the range time in and hone your basics. Remember slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Airborne 🇺🇸🫡

Too bad the barrel is NIGH IMPOSSIBLE to change out (unlike an AR), so much so that EVEN Springfield no longer service barrel swaps!...And there are fewer and fewer gunsmiths who work on the M1A/M14. Springfield 100% needs to make a tool that makes barrel changes easier like the AR wrench!!....

My retirement gift to myself was a Ruger Mini-30, for most of the reasons you mention here. I had walked past it on the shelf for a couple of years without notice. Then one day it caught my eye and I asked if I could work the action ... When I regained consciousness I was at my desk reassembling the mini, with the scent of Hoppe's in the air. As far as the safety goes ... it is right where it needs to be.

agreed regarding safety. Your finger should only be in there if you are ready to shoot anyway, so I don't see the problem. Not to mention it will automatically remind you to "defeat the safety" as they say, in the event that you forgot. And its an ambi safety from before ambi safeties were cool.

I chose the Mini-14 for the same reason Colion loves the Scout rifle. The profile is perfect in my eyes. I was looking for a strong dependable action for short range. My only complaint of the Mini-14 is the 1:9 twist rate which is good for 55Gr bullets but has accuracy issues with 62Gr and especially 75Gr. For anything beyond 250 yards, my custom bolt action in 284Winchester is perfect.

Mine came from a brother I served with. When he died, long after we got home, his son's brought it to me and said Dad wanted you to have this. I put a Leupold scout scope on it and never looked back. What are your plans to change out the barrel when the time comes? I heard it's 5000 rounds for standard non-chrome lined. It's so much a PITA that even Springfield no longer services the M1A regarding barrel swaps...now it's harder and harder to find a gunsmith who will work on the model too...Springfield NEEDS to develop a cheap tool (like the AR wrench) for easy barrel changes, for the longevity of the platform...

I bought my M1A when there was no Scout Squad or SOCOM16. Options were Standard or National Match or White Feather. So I got the Standard, I went to a gunshow in Sept of 2011 (yes) with the intention of arming up. Walked out with a Standard M1A, an XM15 and as much ammo as I and my son could carry. I never regretted it. It shoots surprisingly soft for a 308. The recoil impulse seems extended over a longer period making follow ups just easy. I was at the range and shot a 20 round mag in well under 7 seconds, hitting the 15" gong at 130 meters 20 times, offhand. When I finished I realized nobody else was shooting. Everybody watched me most with their mouths agape and the range officer looked at me and instead of the deserved admonishment for not leaving 3 seconds between shots said "I want to be on your side, what the hell are you shooting?". I since upgrade the stock to the archangel stock and have a forward mounted Burris 2.5x scout scope. But it was great with the beech stock and iron sights

Once you start getting into soecialty situations, use soecialty weapons. Shotgun for trench clears, etc. Bolt actions for long range. And mounted belt feds for suppression and whatnot. Then the old mortar rounds and drones for precision warfare

I put a vortex viper 5-25 scope on it, and fired hundreds of rounds so far with no reliability issues. Sure it’s a bit heavy, but I don’t mind. I bought my scout as my do everything rifle, and it hasn’t disappointed me yet. It’s not for everyone sure, but i don’t feel the need to buy or build a super accurate sub moa rifle. I rarely shoot my ar or my ak outside of the range anymore. This is my practical, shtf ranch rifle and I love it. Edit: had to fix some autocorrect errors…

My first M1A was a SOCOM 16 in FDE. Absolutely love it. Especially with the flip up shoulder rest on the butt. As a result I had to get the Scout and the standard. I like the 16" barrell on the SOCOM better for quick handling capabilities. For distance, the full length barrell. All of them are fun and accurate.

I will admit the Garand grandchild aesthetic is what drew me to buying my first firearm the M1A socom. Especially being limited in options by CA.

My Scout Squad is by far the best gun I own, and by far the most fun to shoot, and easily the gun I will always pick up if shtf. I REALLY don't understand peoples thinking that this gun is old and obsolete. Its a battle rifle that spits hot fire 600 yards down range. It takes a turd all over the AR15 in nearly every respect except weight.

the scout squad is definitely the coolest and most practical M1A. I will get one on the future. It's just a great, do-everything rifle.

Carried wooden stock M14 with full barrel in Vietnam when.I was in the Marines... baby was extremely lethal at 500 meters....best rifle other than ma deuce I have ever fired. BAR is my 2nd favorite followed by the Garand.

It’s the final one i need. I own a Stainless Kreiger Barreled variant NM M1A which has been completely hot rodded and laid into a Troy M14 Battle Rail Chassis; a Super Match with the Parakarized Douglas Barrel and the SOCOM 16. Scout Quad is the one I am missing. Great guns!!

My love affair with this system started when I shot competition on my NG unit rifle team. I bought a scout in 2013, was a bit disappointed with the accuracy. (In reality it wasn't bad. I just expected what my highly accurized M14 would do.) So I changed barrels to a 22" Krieger medium profile barrel, had it bedded, trigger job, gas system tuned, (And it was at this point I kind of lost my mind) then mounted a Athlon Midas TAC 5-25x56. Worked out a good handload for it and yeahhhhhhh, she does long range pretty good. If shtf it's my go to rifle for sure.

While we're calling the M14 a "rifle of yesteryear", let's not gloss over the fact that the AR, which comes first to most people's mind when they think of a "modern rifle design" is also a product of the 50's and 60's.

M14 is heavy, bulky and without a doubt the long gun you need when the shtf. Carried one in RVN for 10 months before cycled to M16.

She's a beauty for sure! I have a friend who is a gunsmith (aren't I lucky?) He acquired a box of parts that eventually made up an FN FAL, the oddity was the barrel, someone had taken a hacksaw to it at about 17" long, just long enough to cut it back and thread it for whatever muzzle device and keep it stamp free. That has a very distinctive silhouette also and my personal fav. But dang, the M1A is a beast too!

I picked up a used m1a a few weeks ago for $600. Im not the familiar with M1As so wasnt sure what i was getting. I got it home and ran #s through Springfield website. It turned out to their top of the line model. Best purchase ive made in years. Ive put about 500rds through it with no issues. Holding 3/4" at 100yds. Looking into a scout model next

Don't own one, (but own a Mini-14) but I've always liked the M1 platform. If I was king of a military one possibility would be the M1A Squad scout the main battle rifle; the Socom 16 for special forces; and the regular M1A 14" barrel for snipers. Same bullet and magazine for all three guns, so good on logistics and good 308 fire power.
