Great video Mike, agreed on all points. It does raise an interesting question though. How does a well-established act (like Dream Theater, but plenty of others apply) remain innovative and shake things up late in their career? If what you release is too different from what fans expect you risk alienating a large portion of your fanbase. (I'm an Opeth fan, I prefer their pre-Heritage stuff. I'm sure you remember that drama.) Dream Theater has the added challenge of using a lot of different elements in their songs already, across many albums, so its easy for them to be derivative of themselves. Not trying to defend them but its an interesting problem that every successful musical act struggles with eventually. How would you approach that challenge?

All the members of DT are approaching retirement age. They can easily just take it easy and stop releasing new albums or just retire completely. But they just like playing music and they are just making the music they like to make. They already have more classic and amazing albums than most other bands and there is nothing they need to do to prove themselves. Most other musical artists would have stopped making music at this point. I think it’s a good thing they still want to record and perform music.

The more I've listened to the song the more I've liked it, don't think it's one of their better songs but I dig it. Biggest plus is Mangini on the drums, he hasn't sounded this good on any of the previous DT records.

We've a term in Turkey: ''Just fart it out and line them one by one'', usually something you'd say to mock something redundant being continiously done by some person or people. This song is exactly that. Just fucking banal at this point, nothing of it is even slightly exciting, same old DT loop we're expected to be elated about.

This reminds me when Dream Theater released a song called Never Enough when in a muse-like style they shout at the fans that they can't make everyone happy no matter what they do, released in 2005 has the same meaning today. There is people who simply has expectations that cannot be filled anymore. Specially those still stuck on Images and Words and Metropolis pt 2 released 30 years ago

This is very on the point. My initial reaction to this song was exactly the same: I've heard this before. Thanks for proving me right. That being said: It's pretty amazing that these guys can whip up something that makes long-time fans feel like they're not even trying anymore, and it's still on a level that very few others can manage. Since nobody asked, I'll give my opinion. This is the best DT song since something from a dramatic turn of events. I feel they haven't done anything this good since then. Still, this is a very DT style DT song. I really like it, but I can totally see your point of view. That said, I really hope there is some more interesting and unique stuff on the full record.

My first impression was much the same - good song but nothing we haven't heard from Dream Theater in the past. My hope is that, like Distance Over Time, the real gems get revealed as the album comes out. Untethered Angel was a quality song, but Pale Blue Dot and At Wit's End were the standout tracks on that album. I'm expecting the same with the new album. I'm sure I'll like it, I don't think Dream Theater has ever released a "bad" album but, taken on it's own, The Alien is pretty middle of the road.

I've been listening to them for around like 10 years and I completely agree with you. To me, it feels like the 2 year album/tour cycle is taking its toll on them. Since Systematic Chaos they haven't been experimenting with genres or styles outside what they've been doing for a while. I don't know if it's a contract they have or whatever, but the more time passes the more I think Portnoy was right when he thought they needed a break. They release around 9 songs every 2 years, most of them way over 5 minutes long, extremely complex. I feel like their songs lately are mostly execution based, like exercises they stick together with some general melodic idea. These kinds of songs need time to be written carefully, trimmed here and there, evolved. Like you said, it's nothing bad, just not that original by a band who used to be in their best years. It feels as if they release everything they write, but sometimes it's better to choose the best you have been writing for 6 years than release everything you come up with every 2.

Wholeheartedly agree! The Astonishing was something new and I applaud them for doing that, but overall, yeah, I feel a total stagnation. Where are the days of Six Degrees when they tried all sorts of cool new sounds and stuff? I miss those days. They don’t have anything to prove to themselves anymore, maybe that’s the problem, they just need to keep the show going because it’s their livelihood. Portnoy brought a musical edge to band I sorely miss. Mangini is awesome at what he does, but Portnoy had so much more than just the drumming.

@@harveydents Thats funny. Assume you don't wathc a lot of his content? He has been a fan of Dream theater for a long, long time and introduced a lot of his fanbase to them. So him critiquing this comes from a fans perspective who either wants something different or has so over indulged on their stuff that anything that alludes to it, instead of sounding nostalgic, just sounds like "been there, done that". And that's a fair perspective. This is, after all, titled "Why I AM bored of dream theater" and not "why Dream Theater is boring now"

I've been a Dream Theater fan for about a decade. I like The Alien a lot, kind of BECAUSE it's "Dream Theater by numbers" which just came together in a way that worked for me in THIS song. To the people who did *not* like The Alien, a word of encouragement: Dream Theater's laurels rest on their albums. To me, no other way makes more sense for listening to their work other than to put one of the records on front-to-back. That's not to say I don't just pop a song or two on from time to time! And as a result, I have more than a handful of DT songs I dislike. I Walk Beside You is probably my least favourite song in their entire discography. I would never put it on on its own. But in the context of Octavarium? I think it works beautifully and the album flows through it perfectly. See how you feel about The Alien as part of a larger piece.

I'm not sure this one is a "safe one", generally, they release a song that's very accessible to everyone first and keep the really prog stuff for later, a safe song is "barstool warrior' for exemple, not "pale blue dot", The Alien is more pale blue than barstool, super prog 9mn song with crazy time signatures everywhere, i think one of the 6mn songs are the "safe ones", but nop, they didn't go that route this time.

The way I see it, your analysis is more or less an acknowledgement of Dream Theater knowing their audience and what they tend to like hearing from them. Something else I want to get off my mind. Some praise Dream Theater for their heavier parts and kind of frown at the "cheesy" post-chorus stuff. Me? I love the post-chorus parts! I'd eat that cheese all day, every day! Dream Theater are absolutely elite at creating those pop/power ballad melodies (too). The ability to switch between those two modes is one of the strengths and trademarks of this band and I think it's also why they've become as big as they have. I guess what I'm saying is: "I'm all about that cheese, 'bout that cheese 'bout that cheese (no chugging)" ;)

Totally agree. The guys in the band are all extremely talented and virtuosos, but I feel that they play into their talent way too much. I think some of their best work is when they are playing slower, melodic "power ballad" stuff that allows them to focus their genius on making an incredible song and not just technical shit for the sake of doing technical shit. That's why Scenes from a Memory was so good; it wasn't just about the heavy stuff. They had a ton of melodic parts throughout the album that work so well because of fantastic melodies, progressions and harmonies. The last three songs are perfect examples of this.

@@lucasimmons075 Yeah, 100%. Without The Spirit Carries On, Through Her Eyes and One Last Time to settle the mood, SFAM would not be the masterpiece it is. In fact, it would become tiring without a break in the (awesome) chaos that is Beyond This Life, Home, The Dance of Eternity, etc. Similarly, DT would NOT be DT without CLASSICS like Another Day, Space Dye Vest, The Silent Man, etc. It is this dichotomy between relentless metal and beautiful, catchy ballads that has made them the biggest prog metal band of this generation

Love DT. Love this song, now that I've listened to it a few times. One thing I will say, is that this is the best Mangini has sounded yet. I'm a fan of his and always felt that he was held back a bit, whether it was the mix or whatever. The thing is, just like any band, you inherently have a sound. I'm an Iron Maiden fan as well, and you know full well that they have a distinct sound, that as soon as you hear it, you know it's them. Although, the new song is a a bit different. Call it comfort food for the ear. Or, this could be an old pair of jeans that just fit right. The point is that after a while, we come to expect something from our favorite bands that, when they change it (i.e. The Astonishing), fans don't like it. Give the fans what they want, a DT song that sounds like a DT song. Mike, you're in a hard place. You're a huge fan, but also a musician that understands the what and hows of what they're doing. It's almost like you're too smart for your own good. You instinctively find yourself analyzing stuff rather than just listening to it for enjoyment. I feel for you and respect you for it. Poor Mangini was getting screwed hard in the drum mixing for years now, especially in Astonishing and self-titled. But DOT and this new album's drum mix is going to be fat beefy and tasty. My personal preference on drum tone is Portnoy's more tight snare snappy sound that Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews uses. But Mangini makes that "metal" drum mix sound amazing on this track.

Long time listener here. Love it as much as Systematic Chaos and Dramatic Turn. Plus, the album doesn’t even come out until another THREE months from now, so I assume this is just a starter that establishes an entire theme we haven’t heard yet. It’s rather silly to go jabbing at a song that isn’t even nearly as long in duration as the rest of an unreleased album. I respect Mike, but he’s whatever. Don’t let his justifications ruin your experience with DT, or anyone’s opinion for that matter. That first year of finding a new prog band is always something that shouldn’t be tainted.

I wasn't super sold on it when i first heard it, came out the gates as a 6.5/10. Seemed too safe and too paint by numbers DT. But, and big but, the more i've listened to it the more I started to love it. Production is the best its ever been, drums are really interesting, bass sounds great, a repetitive but an interesting time signature 17/16 in most parts to keep things interesting and unexpected. lots of variation on the riffs and melodic ideas. Great solos on both guitar and keyboard and honestly apart from the first verse I really dug the vocals. now i would say The Alien is more like a 8.5/10 for me and has been the best "Single" from DT in a very long time. My favorite part of the songs is actually the brief part with the heavy choir and the palm muted guitars at 9:07, wish they let that part go on a little longer. But music is subjective! you have a lot of great points but DT sounding like DT has always both pissed off and pleased fans and today I am pleased.

Honestly I was in your position two years ago, but I became a DT fanatic once I gave them 3 chances. It seriously took 3 tries and it finally clicked. Give Images another listen, and try songs like Solitary Shell and Take Away My Pain. You will notice their catalogue has a nice balance between simple pieces and technical pieces that makes the listening experience much more enjoyable. Just give it another shot. I had to do that with Opeth too, took me a while to get into the death metal stuff, but now I love it.

But I was really into growls at the time and his soft vocals gave me insecurity in my masculinity. But listen to the acapella of Images and Words and you'll realize that at the time Labrie was a monstrous singer. Definitely not the weakest link of the band

I decided to give this video a watch to see if I could better understand why people dislike this single. And... well, I sort of got my answer? Here's the thing - I do see your points, and I think that they're valid. But... at the same time, I absolutely can't agree with them lol. Almost every side-by-side comparison you made with songs from their previous albums didn't feel like they were THAT similar to me. Even if, in terms of music theory, they might have aspects that connect them, I really feel like The Alien didn't really share that many similarities with the other parts you mentioned. And this is as someone who has listened to all of Dream Theater's albums over the course of a couple of years. I have... a worrying amount of their music committed to memory, and honestly I find I'm able to appreciate the differences even when similar parts come up. That's not to say I'm somehow better at enjoying them, just that personally I don't really focus on similarities, and think more about differences. Since none of the riffs are necessarily IDENTICAL, I find I pick out the differences in them. I do agree with the end of this video though, and fully feel your pain on the assessment that you feel pressure to talk about Dream Theater when they release new stuff. And to that, I say... honestly, maybe don't make a video about the new album? Just listen to it when it comes out, let it digest, and don't rush to make a review or something. Maybe down the line mention if you like/dislike the album, but don't do much beyond that. It sounds to me as though you feel burnt out from the band, because currently you just passively enjoy their material without being super enamoured with it, but people EXPECT you to have a lot to say when really you don't. I personally still classify Dream Theater as progressive metal, but then again my definition is slightly different. I feel like your definition is more accurate to the term "progressive", but it feels off when applied to music. Like, for something to be genuinely progressive, I feel like it'd have to reach a lot of people to actually progress the art form. And, as big as prog metal bands like Dream Theater are, they don't have a whole lot of reach in the grand scheme of music, making it difficult for them to be progressive in a literal sense. I personally define prog more as pushing boundaries for their own self-contained sound, and I do think Dream Theater still experiment within their own sound. Sure, one of the early riffs in The Alien is reminiscent of a riff in Sacrificed Sons, but I feel like the tempo and the chords set behind the riffs help give it a different vibe. Jordan Rudess does an excellent solo, which he does pretty often, but he did use an odd and new effect for a short time in the solo, which gives it a bit of extra flavour. It's not as much variation as before, but I feel like Dream Theater still try to figure out new ways to freshen up their sound. That's just my thoughts though.

100% Agree with you. I am an old Dream Theater fan (Since 1993) and remember how it felt when "A Change of Seasons" came out. Having been used to their first 3 albums at the time, I can still remember the feeling of excitement of hearing new melodic phrases and cadences. I remember also getting excited with their side projects as well because they all sound different from DT too like Chromakey, LTE, etc. I should say that after "Octovarium", I do not feel the same excitement and anticipation anymore. I still listen but especially the last 3~4 albums, I have not listened to it fully because like you, the thrill is sort of gone.

In the 90s when they recorded Falling into Infinity they were stuck having to make more accessible music according to the demands of the record label they were with at the time and they almost disbanded and gave up. it's not "Alien takes forever.", it's "Alien, changed forever." which makes a lot of sense and is a great lyric for this song. I get most of the complaints but, come on, man, the lyrics are good on this one. The song structure, I kind of saw it as a nod to their previous catalogue while still having some new elements. I still like their sound but totally understand your viewpoint and actually had very similar problems the first time I heard it but then it grew on me. I think (and hope) we'll see more "new elements" from them in the next single that they wanted to introduce after the first, pretty accesible and "comfort zone", single. Nice comment! I've been a Dream Theater fan since the "Pull Me Under" video. I didn't hear King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard until about a year ago. Their microtonal style and "Spinal Tap" imagery is quite diverse and original sounding. I've heard much from them now and can say that they still surprise me. I don't think Dream Theater needs to go microtonal, however. Although Dream Theater uses many scales and modes in their music, they still only use about 3% of the Total Scale and Mode Possibilities. All they need are some new scales and modes to add to their Understanding and Abilities. Search for the "Guitar Totality" book online for more information on ALL POSSIBLE SCALES AND MODES using the 12 notes of the chromatic scale... 🌎✌🌿🎶

Sadly I agree with you and I have gone through this same experience with my other favorite bands like Rush. I don’t fault the bands, I know they’re giving it their absolute best effort but there is only so much amazement in the tank. Something I’ve noticed about the singles Dream Theater releases leading up to the full album release - they always pale in comparison to they songs they DON’T release as singles. For example: when they released Untethered Angel, Paralyzed, and Fall Into The Light as singles from the Distance Over Time album, I gave them all multiple listens, and thought “Ok. Pretty cool.” Then the album got released, and I heard songs like Barstool Warrior, S2N, At Wits End, and Pale Blue Dot, and fell in love with them instantly. To this day, those are my 4 favorite tracks on that album. That exact thing has happened to me with the last several DT albums. So, with that said, i’m still hopeful that there will be some awesome stuff on the upcoming album. A lot of bands seem to do the opposite - they release the better tracks as singles, then you listen to the rest of the album and it ends up being a little underwhelming. That’s just MY own observation.

I want to take the steak metaphor a step further... We get accustomed to that rich, well crafted fillet from our favorite restaurant. What do we do when we still want a fillet but are tired for the same one? Go somewhere else( find a different band) BUT for dream theater, their albums spanning from metropolis to even black clouds gave what i think to be the feel and experience of getting that dt fillet of each album as if it were from a completely different restaurant while still being at the same place. Like each of those albums in that span was a like how different cultures approach making a fillet at different restaurants. You didnt have to go anywhere else to have that dr prog experience. The problem now is that i feel like we are getting the same style of fillet just reinvented or arranged differently from the past 3 or 4 fillets. I still have mad respect and always like what they do. Just what has been on my chest for a while now too

I was heavily into Dream Theater with their first album, proud to be on that train from the beginning. Joined the fan club, got all of the fan club CDs, bought all of the Ytse Jam albums and saw them several times in concert, meeting them 3 times. But since Black Clouds, I've been completely bored with the same variations on the same melodies over and over. I admit to only listening to their last 5 albums a couple of times or so but that's because I love them so much, I don't want fuel for my dislike of those albums. It's not Mangini, he's incredible and I love his playing. I used to think it was Labrie because his style never clicked for me but in the end, it's the songs. Your video is a masterclass in what not to do for prog bands, some get so repetitive. Makes me wonder though, was Portnoy's songwriting the key to unlocking their strengths? The best band in the world, that bores me to tears. Dream Theater, the AC/DC of prog (only I loved the recent AC/DC album, they can pull it off).

Dude, I am right there with ya. I love Dream Theater, have since 91, I think Mangini is great, but they have been so hit and miss in the 21st century. I mean, I'd rather have Dream Theater making songs that I don't care for than Taylor Swift doing literally anything, so there's that. I just find Petrucci's riffs, particularly along the low string around the 5-8th frets, just sounds like an assembly line. Again, I love Dream Theater, I still go see them, I still consider myself a fan. Just haven't been all that excited by them lately. That said, when I saw them in 2017 on the Images and Words tour, I was front row and basically giggled like a kid for 2 1/2 hours, so there's that.

I agree with a lot of the points you make, but at this point, I don’t really care what they do as long as they enjoy doing it. Most of their new stuff hadn’t had as much magic and sheer emotion as their old stuff, but I still find it enjoyable to listen to. I highly doubt this is going to be the best song on the album. Even with their more repetitive routine now, their epics have stayed consistently incredible. I personally really liked the self titled album but it wouldn’t have been anywhere near as good without Illumination Theory. I have faith that the title track of this album is going to be great. The singles aren’t usually the best song of their albums anyway, I don’t think the first song on ANY of their albums is my favorite from it. I love Dream Theater, and I love everyone in it and what they do, but they have gotten rather repetitive. Mainly, though, I’ll keep supporting them and buying the albums and stuff as long as I can still enjoy it, and if they enjoy making it, which it seems they do. They could’ve retired a long time ago and lived comfortably with what they got, most bands would have already. I’m just glad they still enjoy making the music, and I’m still enjoying listening to it, even if it is a little repetitive and unoriginal at times. That being said, I found Mangini incredible on this track, I think they may have finally found a way to properly show how great he is on these albums. Some people called them finished musician, at the retirement age, you name it. But in the end, it's not only about pattern or nostalgic rhythm. They have their own identity as a band, which will always be carried to all their fans, old and new one, and eventually the identity itself that brought them to the award. Your expression at 15:26 is how I've kinda always felt about DT. I've been a fan since 98' and I have always said DT are a "safe" band. Meaning most of all their tracks have TOO many similarities, it makes them a band that constantly plays it safe. They know their formula and I guess my issue is hoping they break that formula but it never happens. JPs Terminal Velocity was INCREDIBLE!! I feel THAT should be how DT sounds going forward. (but I understand obviously why) Still going to jam this record though. Cheers mate!

Dream Theater has done so much for music. I appreciate they have stayed loyal to their roots and principles. Is hard for a prog band to remain relevant and fresh at the same time. I was not excited by this new song, but I don’t mind they keep doing what they do.

I watched the "Alien" video on KZbin just the other day, and I have to say my reaction was not unlike yours. I thought 'meh'. It's okay I guess. I saw these guys live back in 2001 at the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville. They were 2nd on a 3 bill act: King's X, Dream Theater, and Joe Satriani. It was my first date with my now wife, and it was awesome. But unlike Tool, as these guys have gotten more sophisticated, they've actually gotten less interesting in some ways. The musicianship is incredible as always. But the music is just something I can no longer really relate to. They're leaving the stratosphere, and leaving me behind. Oh well. Guess they're the alien. tavi.

You did a great job in this video articulating what I was feeling while listening to the new Dream Theater song, I’ve been an avid fan since SFAM and I loved some of the songs on Distance Over Time but The Alien did nothing for me. Really hoping the rest of the album is better. For some reason my feelings on The Alien sent me down a Porcupine Tree/ Steven Wilson rabbit hole, it’s still prog but not the same type. I described the Alien to my friends as “paint by numbers” Dream Theater

I've been a fan for one year and I've heard the same structure before. The first time I listen to The Alien, I don't like it for the same reason (DT's generator). Now, I liked it, yeah, Maybe, it's very similar but with another style for me, sounds so good. A Dramatic Turn of Events has too much from Images and Words and I love both.

Overall good energetic song & im excited to hear the album in full but as a progressive metal band there is no longer any progressive element and thats what i used to love i prefer acts whi push boundaries e.g. Steven Wilson

I can totally understand this feeling, been a DT fan for at least 10 years now, and this track didn't click with me even after several listens. The best way I can describe it is I feel like I've heard it before spread all over their discography before, but it's not cohesive enough to become its own thing. I honestly hope I can relate more with the rest of the album.

I remember JP saying a few years ago that they didn't listen to other bands, in the context of while they were in the studio, maybe because he'd read of all the comparisons to Muse that were made around the time Octavarium was made... I seem to remember Portnoy turning Petrucci onto Muse around that time. Point being, they probably don't do this so they won't inadvertently have songs show up on their new albums that sound like other bands. Well, maybe they should be listening to other music, just before, and while they're writing new material. Could be what is needed.

I absolutely loved Distance Over Time, but since then I’ve listened to the rest of their catalogue a lot more and by the time this single came out, I really feel similarly to you here. If this album is going to be similar to DoT, it’ll be fine but ultimately not very exciting.

I became a DT fanatic after DOT came out two years ago. It's still one of my all time favorites, but when you go back and listen to Images, Octavarium, or Six Degrees, you kind of hear some magic that doesn't get captured on these new songs. But I still love the new stuff to death. The Alien may start growing on me down the road, let's see

Honestly, I think the DT sound for the past 3 albums is due Jordan and Petrucci having too much input/control. At this point for DT; I'd consider revolutionary a 4 minutes song with predominant bass/drums groove in 4/4;and clean rhythmic vocals. Chill out with the chugs and keyboard choirs PLEASE.

It was never featured in an official, but it was released in the official B-sides album "Cleaning Out the Closet" in 1999. This B-sides disc also features songs like "To Live Forever" and "Raise the Knife". Check it out! A fellow musician friend asked me via text a few days ago what I thought about the song...below is a direct cut and paste: I think it has no soul. After Portnoy left, Dream Theater ceased to be Dream Theater, IMO. I find the new song to be filled with over the top wankery without a point. There is no pulse. It's like a zombie. It lives without life. It's sad for fans like me, and I know I'm not alone, but I hope they succeed.
