While I don't make tech or gear videos, I have had similar feelings about KZbin in general. It seems to be turning into one big sales pitch. This year I am being much more selective about who I will do sponsored videos for and have nearly eliminated any affiliate marketing type videos. It's painful from an income point of view, but i am enjoying making videos more than I have been. Hopefully my viewers will enjoy the change and chose to support the channel in other ways.

The best part about this recent “drama” is that it sends a clear signal to companies to double down on product-led growth. Make the best fricken thing, fully bake the firmware, and then hand it to marketing to let it loose with creators in a hands-off way. That’s a lot easier said then done, but there seems like a hole in the market for a brand to wear the crown of “we put out solid devices (maybe a tad slower) but they work really well on day 1”

I totally agree with this. It can sometimes feel like selling your soul for money...but that is what a job is for most people in a traditional sense. Just talking from my own experience as someone who had to work a full time regular job for many years whilst side hustling on YT to escape the rat race. When I eventually began receiving brand offers. It's very hard to say "NO... I'm happy with the 500 quid a month I'm making & NO I'm not interested in receiving any pre-release products" While it would be very honourable to do so. I think realistically, doing that at that point would have burnt bridges before having a chance to build them... I learnt that the hard way and even today there are several big brands that won't send me anything. Realistically it makes more sense to be more selective once you're actually making steady money without the deals and product opportunities. Well at least enough money to pay the bills. But saying that. I have always found it way more fun making videos that I want to make without a brand looking over my shoulder.... So I'm trying to find that balance at the moment. *Big respect to brands that don't insist on forcing creators to push a narrative* 😂 He says as he's about to drop two sponsored pieces 🤦

I don't think I realized how blurred the lines were between "sponsor" and "review" in the camera space. Some of this stuff - even the "good" exchanges - would not remotely fly in other scenes. Wild.

Good perspective. I like that you touched on selling. During this last week of camera drama, so much has been made about the relationships of brands and creators and the truth about products. The truth about products IS important but for me, I’m tired of creators (and brands) selling to me constantly. I don’t want to be sold on something. I want to see cool videos. You brought up your Inspire 3 video, which is a great example of where I didn’t feel I was being sold to, and I remember that video because of how it showed what a cool tool it could be in capable hands. Off the top of my head, I don’t remember the camera stuff that was more about selling because it all blends together. I’m with you in that I want to see cool videos and after talk about the experience with the tool (more importantly, the techniques) that was used rather than spec sheet being read to me.

Just finished your video and this was extremely insightful. I’m just under 2000 subs and a brand reached out for a non sponsored review which I completed. They were very excited about the content I made and how it performed and have offered me a sponsorship for the next video. I’ve always done my best to be as real as possible with my audience. Gerald’s video came out Friday so I shot a sort of response as he mentioned new creators who are entering the space of brand collaboration. I shot and posted the video on Sunday which- if I’m being honest, is a little harsh (not towards Gerald, but towards content creators who don’t tell the entire truth) Long story short, you’re proving to me why I want to maintain complete integrity and only want to take on sponsors I stand behind. Thank you for affirming that I’m not insane 😂❤️💪🏾

I have a chronic illness that makes reading and understanding what I read difficult. So, the kind of reviews I like are when creators compare, by giving the specs of 2 similar products of 2 different brands. Then I can decide which one suits me best. That way I don't have to read information on the product. You have given a lot of good info on how to deal with brands! And I totally agree you shouldn't have to be pressured to make a positive review. People want honest reviews.

I love tech and gear, but in my mind I just want to show my viewers what I’m interested in and share my experience of the gear I paid with my own (9/5 job) money. Glad you are doing things the way you are. I personally go to small channels for reviews. Most big name KZbinrs are just informercials for products and you never get the real reviews. Granted sometimes small channels will also sing praises to try and get attention on companies, but if I spent 3k on a camera and it isn’t working right I am letting someone know. So small channels tend to be more honest. Glad you are be more open about products reviews and saying your actually experience.

I like how some creators, like Jesse Driftwood, have started referring to their videos as "Showcases" instead of reviews. That feels a lot more honest and forthcoming and a way to still work with brands that isn't devaluing your reputation capital. I think SHOWCASE is the perfect term we should be widely adopting when working with brands on product seeding where they have a saw in the editorial outcomes, versus a review, in which they do not have a say in the editorial outcome..

I think it’s been an interesting few days or maybe even a week in the camera world. You said something about the gear that you have and how it works great and how reviewing the next camera might not be what you want to do because you already enjoy what you have. I’ve said this to almost anyone who has listened lol but I think these camera companies have been kind of getting over on us, and maybe even getting over on you all as creators. I say that because within the past 5 to 6 years, in my opinion there hasn’t been more than maybe two cameras that I’ve been released that I’ve been like sold on, to where I’ve thought about making a change. All of these cameras are REALLY GOOD, and at the end of the day it’s up to the user in most cases to get the most out of them. Especially when you’ve hit the mirror less era of any of these camera brands, what more can these cameras do that’s making me want to move onto to the newest one every few years? Cameras are designed to last, and to last a long time at that. In most cases when I am watching creators on here review cameras I’m usually left saying “ehh, nice video, but what does this do that the other one realistically can’t do?” And that’s not anything on you all, it’s simply that I think these cameras are all REALLY GOOD and if im seeing only minimal changes, then I know you all are. And to me, that could get boring or old as well. We’re living in a time where we want something new all the time, but the camera world to me is the exact opposite of that; you don’t need a new camera every year or two because of how well they are made and how well lenses are made. So the essence of this world of cameras is changing in a way I don’t think it was ever designed to be. I could go on and on but I’ll stop here, just my two cents.

Great video! As a new KZbinr now and even before I always enjoy watching reviews but hate seeing ones that just praise the gear and don't point out the bad. We need more people on the platform like you, Gerald, camera conspiracies, etc who say it like it is. After starting youtube I felt the need to buy more and more gear to be able to make reviews about it, but I am glad I didn't and have kind of changed my mind on how I want to approach things. it feels like GEAR and PHOTO/VIDEO are 2 different things. You need gear to do the craft but you don't need the newest and latest, you don't need comparisons, all you need is A CAMERA and A LENS (or a few, but not all of them) and at the end of the day doing the craft is more fun than talking about what you could do with a camera and looking at the camera but never using it.

@shmuelaryehkoltov2417 ай бұрын
Totally get you. All these gear reviews and "the new this, the new that" totally misses the mark. What reviewers should ask and talk about is "is this something that you need? Is this something that is worth to invest more money in? Which consumer does this cater to and if not you, don't buy it but think about this thing instead!" Gear is expensive and the companies want KZbinrs (and other "influencers") to sell it for them. They don't care about what the consumers need, they care that they buy whatever the companies put out on the market, and then manipulate the consumers into thinking that they need this product.

Very good video and completely agree! The difference here is between brands that are smart, believe in their products, and are transparent and etical, and respectful towards creators. AND brands that want to lie and manipulate to artificially increase the hype on their product, and which can use budding (and not only) creators that are overhyped and pumped and feel important that a huge brand collaborates with them or pays them, that they are willing to manipulate their audience a bit and have a lack of transparency on their contract with that brand, or just lie on some specs. Recent example: with the Panasonic S9, SOME (not all, clearly) creators said that: 1. it's enough good of a travel photo camera - no problem with that rolling shutter of that well-known 24 MP FF sensor, and lack of mechanical shutter! 2. lack of hot shoe - no problem, on a $1500+ "hybrid" FF camera 3. ridiculous 10/15 min limits for video on a $1500 FF vlogging camera - no problem, deal with it; if you don't like it, it's not for you! Let's not forget that Panasonic were the first to offer unlimited 4k recording without the damned 30 min limit, with the GH5 if I'm correct, when everybody else had that limit for even year after on most of their cameras! And the Sony ZV-E10, at about $500, can record unlimited 4k, HAS a mechanical shutter (with even 2 curtains), and a hot shoe. And recently I've also seen the extreme with these, where the product is actually a blatant lie and scam: the Rabbit R1 and the AI Pin, lying by the book.

Few years back i went to get a Canon camera, got sold on a Sony a6300. Needed it for our wedding. Was not a fancy wedding at all and i was the groom, DJ and photographer, sounds stupid but possible) as the camera got passed around and others took pictures with it too. Not knowing much about photography or sooting videos the camera sat in a drawer for couple years after that. In time i started watching you tube videos on these topics and started using said camera as my interest grew. I watched a lot of you guys talk about gear and ways to use it and so i made some choices on new lenses, a flash, trigger, ND filters and so on. Even watched videos on gear i never intended to purchase. I gererally take pictures and make some short videos (nothing near the quality you do), however nothing to make me money. Just to share with friends. I know you guys use much better equipment than what i got, but the up side was at least that most of you used Sony with similar functions. Over time i would spend more time watching videos on photography techniques from various youtubers. Then came a point where i could no longer relate in any way as i felt that they got so good at their skills, that any improvement is left to the gear, and out came the Hasselblad. That sh!t is expensive. I hoped to get the a7IV but there were other priorities. What i am saying is that i can’t relate to some you tubers, and i just don’t watch their videos anymore. I use my camera as a hobby, i get some good pictures out of it, ok videos, i work with what i got. And from my level listening to people complain about a camera 10 times better than mine missing some upgrade they were hoping for, got boring long time ago All the best 👍

You hit the nail many times with this one and I think in fact camera reviews have to change. It always bothered me when content creators make a review of a more cinema oriented cameras. Sure they have a lot to say but end up butchering their products because it’s something that’s not really meant for them and from my point of view that’s really the problem. It’s very different to say: I don’t find this camera useful than “MFT is dead”, like Undone did and from then his “incidents” with LUMIX. In order to have a healthy relationship, brands shouldn’t hand their products to everyone and content creators, like you do, should cherry pick what they’re going to review to avoid saying thing like “Panasonic is dead” or “M4/3 is dead” and antagonize people.

I like to see the 1st unboxing to see what you get, but that's also getting cliche (there only so many options to open a box 🙂) I prefer seeing the product being used in a real-life situation and hear about the lessons learnt while USING the product. I'll still be watching you videos 🙂

As a pro consumer I agree with you take bit believe there is room or more so a need for both. I don't have the income to buy the latest and greatest camera every time it comes out so I watch a ton of gear videos to make the most informed decision for the price that I can. But then find myself overwhelmed learning my way around how to get results out of my gear right away. I use cameras, and drones on a weekly base but have to sell one camera to get another so I don't have time to play with a new camera before I need to use it on a professional level. So definitely could use more on the way of weeks after a new gear is launched seeing how to get good results videos.

I’m with you. I’ve taken a huge hit in views because I’m shooting videos I want to instead of videos that would get views. My views are way down but I’m happier. However, KZbin is not my full time job so I don’t have that pressure.

This sentiment translates into other niches too. I review audio equipment, and now most budget tools have *most* of the features, crammed in the same size body, with negligible differences in quality. It makes reviews kind of boring. Nothing that exciting about every product being the same.

I agree, there was an other famous youtuber he bought an ARRI then closed the youtube channel in few months.

Peter, YOU got it. It has become truly about $$$. Normal to get bored when most is the same, same, same. You have enough people subscribed you could start craving a different path if you decided. You know if you offer value more than likely will follow you. What's the biggest thing right? ...probably, AI, lots to talk about, about that. (once I was into "GAS," then I was able to step back away from it looking at that behaviour objectively. Then I was pulled back into that as a result of a good friend. Then I stepped away again because I could see the behaviour occurring again. Even mentioned that to my friend who I do not think he could see that because he was in it. Again I have stepped back from it, not being pulled in and slowly watching my friend arriving at a similar place. I suppose maybe in a way it might be like when people get older, then start to realize there is all this stuff they do not need and they start to down size, know what I mean? Peter, Crave your own path mate, the way you decide for which gives you joy, excitement and peace.)
