Why are people already deciding that Avowed is gonna suck based on just one person from the team acting unprofessionally? Yes, what the art director did was stupid (even if I do share his opinions to an extent) but to write off a game seems really silly, might aswell write off other RPG's aswell. Devs from this genre are somewhat famous for being outspoken in social media
@ImpGooseАй бұрын
Because director is a figure of a leader. If he lets himself lose on such a trivial topic as an opinion of one man regarding his creation, it means he's not capable of leading. He is unprofessional in his communication. Leaders who fail to communicate can't create a successful project. I want to play the game that I like, not that Elon dislikes or was made for him to dislike. There were many ways how a lead could have responded, he chose the most childish and unprofessional way and therefore harmed the reputation of the studio and the game. Devs like 3d artists or those who do animation or coding are not leaders and can't represent the whole studio. Technically, they should be aware that people ask for information, not mocking. Replying to comments that express concerns is called "pre-sale reassurance". It's a job that is usually performed by community managers or customer service assistants OR by leaders of a product. I hope it gives you some information to understand why people don't want to engage with a game that has unprofessional people in their studio.

Sadly, experience taught me that when the people responsible for creating art are... very politically outspoken, controversial, and rude, nine times out of ten they tend to be more concerned with using said art as a soapbox, than with telling the best story, creating the most fun, or simply making beautiful art that makes people happy. You might say they suffer from tunnel-vision.
@JJJBunney001Ай бұрын
@ImpGoose but someone's personal opinions on things have no bearing on what they do at work. There's a separation that people who are chronically online don't get. People like Tim Cain are very outspoken about certain topics but that doesn't stop them from leading teams or creating projects

@@JJJBunney001 Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a very good example for personal and political opinions impacting writing and story telling. What I felt sadder while playing was that I didn't feel like I was in the world I loved so much for so many years. The characters, the ideas, the life it once had felt now so empty, a shell of what it was. Even the Inquisitor felt like just an NPC that never once resonated with me and never looked like it was once my Inquisitor. It was like many characters, a stranger to me.

This was the biggest issue to me too. It didnt just feel like a DA game with bad writing, it felt like a generic and corporate "fantasy video game"(TM) attempting to wear the skin of my favorite series :( And failing. Miserably.
@PhilipReeve-f4pАй бұрын
I had hopes for VG. we did wait 10 years for it. I played it once and just that was that. I found myself only wanting to finish VG to see my inquisitor and her lover Solas have their ending. The game does not feel like a dragon age game anymore. So I've gone back to BG3 where I am constantly reminded and with much relief that bioware did not make this game.

This is why I’m fixing it through fanfic, and reading fanfic, which it’s crazy how even amateur writers make the actual writers look even worse. I just keep watching the Solas parts and researching the Devouring Storm lore - which admittedly is quite interesting. Aside from the implication they across the sea manipulating everything. I head canon they were simply watching and nudging things along, not outright directly influencing. I wish you well though. I’ll just get my DA fix with those who enjoyed the game despite the Disney filter and sanitation.

I love witcher 3. I listen to the soundtrack from the game while at work every now and then to get into the right head space. Also! I can't wait for kingdom come 2 to release! Just under 3 months now! I finally got my brother into the first game after years of pushing him to try it. Kept telling him "no bro, there's no fantasy in kingdom come. There's no magic, just a knight sim" because he knows i always play fantasy and pick mage when ever i get a game like that. Well just a few days back KCD was being sold for $2.99 and i forced him to download it lol. He's been locked to the game for last 2 days now lol. Him and his fiancee have been playing on their day off all day long, sun up to sun down lol.

Understandable decision, it isn't healthy to continue to put time, effort and energy into Dragon Age and its new direction. It's much more healthy to use that precious time to explore worlds and games that align with what you enjoy in a role playing game. It can often be overlooked how much of an impact things like games, stories and pursuit of intersting lore/knowledge has on the attitude and outlook we have on day to day life! Sometimes it can be hard to step away from the routine or loyalty to one thing, but once the passion and respect for it has gone and you've lost trust in the creators of that experience (whether its a game franchise, TV show, movie, book, comic etc) then it's better to move on before it affects your passion and enthusiam towards seeking things that leave a positive mark on you.

Nah I refuse to acknownlege that, I said it already in the future I'll buy the artbook (which had early concepts and they were so much better than this), and I'll draw a few scenes with my characters to their story and that's it . That is one of the things I initially kinda thought too; the messages from the inquisitor are kinda doomy. Here’s the thing though, without the evanuris this new more active blight stops too. You might even get more smart independent darkspawn like the architect too. I also think the main point about the discovery of living beatiful flower patches in the blight with Anton the grey warden was to point out the changing blight means the newer blight does give chances of new life. In short after defeating the Evanuris the south of Thedas is not as doomed as some people like to think.
@GiovanniZaluchiАй бұрын
While a good idea, without DLC pertaining to reclaiming the south, visiting areas there, meeting old heroes and companions and bringing specific lore threads to a conclusion (Andrasteism, the Blight and Wardens, intelligent darkspawn, the difference between the 'original' darkspawn vs the 'more evolved' darkspawn and Broodmothers, etc.) it is quite hard for players to have high hopes for what came before.

I think Avowed is going to be cool. I ain't gonna hold some over-enthusiastic game dev responsible for some tweets. I do think devs need to stop interacting with certain types of conversations though. In this age, you can't just go against the public zeitgeist and expect success. You gotta let the game speak for itself and not try to hammer certain messages in as much as you'd expect. Most of the people who disagree with you these days think they already possess a moral rightness that's for whatever reason inherent to their personality. But from what I can tell this game world is supposed to have a darker tone to it, so for me that is what the issue should be about. I just found your channel a few days ago and it saddens me that you won't be covering Avowed because I know nothing about that game world. Plus the way you discussed Dragon age was such a breath of fresh air. The other games you mentioned I'm not that interested in or I haven't played them. While I respect your thoughts and agree with your general feelings, I do think it would be a mistake to think too regionally about games. Exodus, for instance, is being made by many good Bioware devs who were seemingly pushed out for being too passionate. The lore rolling out is INCREDIBLE, already. David Gaider made a crazy musical mythology game with Laura Bailey post-Bioware, and as he said, there were some in Bioware (probably EA's favorites) who seemed to find lore-passionate writers such a nuisance to be rid of. We saw this with ME *and* DA, and that is a massive problem... but as also happened with Bethesda and its best writers, when talent is considered a nuisance, it goes elsewhere. Finding where the creatives went finds us good games.

To be honest, none of the Dragon Age sequels were great - DA2 and Inquisition were fine, and had good world-building, but were themselves far below Origins and disappointing as sequels. I was hoping that Veilguard being set in Tevinter and the success of BG3 would have allowed the series to return to form, but instead it went the opposite direction and was an absolute disaster, such that it makes Inquisition looks like a great game in comparison. Never played the Witcher series much, but very excited for Kingdom Come and Avowed (politics around gaming doesn't bother me much, I mainly go for the games themselves; plus I've been waiting for an RPG with spears for decades). But in the long-term, I'm probably excited for Exodus most of all.

Inconsistentcy is a big problem in DA (especially in comparison to ME as much as I know), but the success of BG3 wasn't a realistic expectation from DA:TV, since there is not a lot of time between; a lot of things were at the core which was made even before BG3 launched or after it If DA:TV released in 2028 or something like that - yeah, BG3 success it rightfully to be expected, no denying in this case

Neve gives off strong Yen vibes, Lucanis actually reminds me of Geralt and I designed, as I usally do cuz my obsession is literally Witcher outside of Dragon Age, my Rook to look similar to Ciri cuz the game finally let me give my character ashen hair with a scar on her face XD Also, the addition of fast and heavy attacks makes the combat feel more like Witcher 3's.

I'm glad I was able to scrounge up what little bit of closure for Trespasser I could from DA:V because unfortunately I have no interest in replaying it nor in where the series goes from here. Which is a shame because Dragon Age has been a part of my life for such a long time, but all good things must come to an end, I suppose.

I feel sad that you are leaving the Thedas discussion after the Veilguard controversy, your analysis were always great but on the other hand most of the misteries from that setting got resolved in a somewhat underhanded manner so I understand there won't be much left to talk about that isn't Qunari and Executors. I wish you the best Important Goose on your new game journeys, as for me I realised I grew older and the years of gaming lost much of their former glory to me. I am thinking of reading more books and possibly writing one, you seem to know a lot about story mechanics, character building and writing tips would you please give me some recommendations on how to learn about those character archetypes, what are those six kinds of story that you said repeat in different fashion every time and all other cool stuff a wanna be writer could learn?
@ImpGooseАй бұрын
Oh, that's great news! I'm very happy that you decided to explore this path 🥳 I'm not an expert by all means, and what helped me a lot was understanding of trauma for every life story (fictional or not). For some people, you are a hero, for others you are a villain. This state is inseparable and exists simultaneously. Thus, give yourself permission to write and observe others without judgement while being ready to get brutally judged especially by people closest to you. Surprisingly, it was my husband and his father and not my blood relatives who read my first draft without any judgement, mocking, or laughter. The only reaction my father-in-law gave was, "I couldn't put it down, so I didn't sleep tonight." It was very touching and insane to be true 😭 So, if you are serious about writing, try to find people who will support your journey. It's a time consuming hobby, after all haha. Try to understand what you like about writing. Maybe it will be an irony of life, romance, folklore, or science. Discover your style. Many writers start hearing their characters instead of seeing them through imagination. Others don't have anything like that at all and just plan the whole story till the end, therefore becoming a god in a newly made universe. When it comes to techniques and rules of creative writing...you will find everything you need via KZbin and Google, my friend. You can study craft but writing a moving story is about being brave to expose the deepest layers of your soul, turn it inside out, and then use your experience to create a new world. Good luck 🍀

The longer I sat thinking of the events of Veilguard after my completion, the more numb I became. I’ve closed the book on Dragon Age and I don’t see interest returning to anything BioWare in a long time. Instead I’ve taken a dive into the Owlcat games (warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader, and Pathfinder series). If you haven’t played them, they are very story rich, lots of lore, and are true RPGs if you are needing to scratch that role play itch after leaving the black hole of mediocrity Veilguard left behind.

Not all games will hit right, which is the way of storytelling. Kingdom Come Deliverance is wonderful game, needing to be diligent to build yourself up. Learning to read in a game was very surreal. It’ll be fun to live in that world again.

I think it’s clear this is the death knell for dragon age, I’m not even finished my play through and I’ve put 76 hours in so I feel comfortable criticising it. It’s really saddening given I spent my teen years playing the first three instalments and loving it. BioWare pulled a “mysterious Illuminati group from across the sea” to re-set the franchise but it’s truely lost now. I can’t see a 5th game even being greenlit and if it even does I can’t support it in good conscience, out of respect for the original creators, and myself.

I think at this point relatively very few people are going to disagree with your take on DA:V. As for The Witcher, I consider TW3 (and its expansions!) one of my most favorite video games ever. Up there with BG3, Knights of the Old Republic (I wish it aged better...), and more. I'll be looking forward to more interesting videos from you analyzing characters and stories, and hopefully in the future we'll have more good games than bad to discuss.

In terms of unprofessional conduct i get that but youre praising games from studios that have had horrible things happen in the past. CDPR was in a lot of trouble for crunch and workplace issues for a while, so was Larian before BG3. It kinda sucks that a single person or a few peoples actions essentially punish the hundreds or thousands of others that work on a game

Nothing but respect for you for being able to recognize the reality of what’s in front of you and adapting. A channel like Jackdaw which was excellent for DA lore exposition and exploration now is resorting to absurd levels of “copium” just to stay wed to a franchise that’s been tanked.

I see Veilguard did help people appreciate Inquisition more... 😄Which I thought wasn't possible before DA4 Funny how I emotionally (not narratively or something-like-that-ly) resonated and was moved by Veilguard (3rd act especially), but the flaws are surely there...
@annmoore321Ай бұрын
The thing is, if the writing was good, I could easily overlook my disappointment with the overall game. I play games like Dragon Age for the story, not for the graphics, gameplay mechanics, or combat. I want to be immersed in a story… and that is the worst part of Veilguard. I have seen fanfic written by high school students that are better written than Veilguard. 😬

The witcher 4 being on unreal after they poured so much resources in the variant or RED engine for Cyberpunk is a bit downgrade for me. Everything is on unreal and it looks all very similar in style. Seems more like alot of devs left and they needed the newbies to get familiar with the engine fast. Lets hope that CDProject red doesn´t dissapoint with the new entry as the creative director of the W3 is long gone with a new studio on his own working on a dark fantasy. As for Veilguard, no amount of mods can fix that. I can only hope that the former devs from Bioware working on Exodus will also make a dark fantasy to replace what was lost with this abomination of a game.

"Because director is a figure of a leader. If he lets himself lose on such a trivial topic as an opinion of one man regarding his creation, it means he"- No, not one man. Not one random nobody. It's a billionare who owns the actual platform he is using which is known to promote hate-speech and is involved in actually destabilizing of governments (I am from Brazil, Elon was actually fighting with the Supreme Court here. X was blocked for almost two months) which is the guy who said the famous phrase “We will coup whoever we want. Deal with it.” which actually has a hand in the coup in Bolivia. THIS is the real world, not some game, and Elon is political figure. One that you positioning yourself against or in favor has actually political meaning. You can't close your eyes and Elon will just disappear as smoke. You want to say "unprofessional = game bad brrr" be free to do so, but Devs are people and Elon is not a nobody. I feel like the reasoning in the pinned post is infantile and naive.

I beat the game, it took 86 hours on normal difficulty and it felt like wasted time. I absolutely hated this game. A dragon age game has never disappointed me more, including DA:2. I think that is because the older entries weren't afraid to be what they are, medieval inspired dark fantasy. Just the opening scene of DA:O with the army of dark spawn and the blood everywhere, despite the aged graphics, feels 200x better than veilguard. Also, I respect your decision to skip avowed, I am skipping it as well.
