I still use my original Xbox to this day and I have just given it some TLC as I had to remove the clock capacitor that was leaking as well as the 3 large capacitors near the PSU that had also burst. I also replaced the rubber band in the DVD drive. I have an OSSC so I have no need for an HDMI modification for the machine, and while I can solder, micro-soldering is beyond my limited abilities. I am surprised you didn't mention the clock capacitor issue in this episode, it's definitely something people should be aware of when buying original Xbox consoles.

I bought a xbox that was softmodded with Unleash X and given a 1TB SDD hard drive. I don't have the technical skills to make a hard HDMI change, but I did the the component cables AND a top quality HDMI converter - both of which look fantastic. I installed most of the games in the Xbox library onto the hard drive. I still own all of my original game discs and boxes (over 40 in total) from my days playing it originally. However, having games installed directly to the hard drive without worry of disc read errors or maintenance and NONE of the money of buying a physical disc ever going into the hands of the creators anyway, i have no remorse for downloading the remaining titles I don't own physical copies of.

The 6th generation is by far the oldest generation you can easily hook up to a lot of modern TVs without modification and with generally good results. Component output options on most of the systems, and (even better) the VGA output option on the Dreamcast! And a few DC games even had the option to set a widescreen aspect ratio, since the system didn’t know whether it was on a widescreen TV or not (there were some 480i and 480p widescreen TVs in the early days, but no handshaking that communicated that to the game console). But, yes, HDMI-only TVs are becoming more common so mods like this will have more and more value going forward. But I have been gaming since the first generation (still have my old Pong clone that you hook up to the TV with an RF modulator!) and I appreciate that it’s possible at all to hook many of these 6th-gen systems up to many new TVs still, with the Dreamcast over VGA producing a progressive signal making it (I think) the oldest system to be able to do so without modification.

I was in my early 20's at the time of the console launch, so it was like a time machine for me too. Great video, I think you really hit the point as think thing being a really good answer to PC gaming. I was a console gamer from Atari 2600-PS1 and then moved out and was in that part of my life, got into PC gaming because I bought a P3 for college work and skipped out on the release of the Xbox. It lived its life with the skin, keep it on. I don’t know if this had to do with the Mortal Kombat movie or OG Xbox games in general but I know Shaolin Monks went up in price a small bit but then it went back down again. I don’t see Xbox games getting near as expensive as GameCube games. Everyone had a GameCube as a kid and these prices are nostalgia driven as those kids are now 20 years older with disposable income. I really don’t think a lot of kids had Xboxes back then and it was mostly people who were already enthusiasts. I gave mine to my niece years back... kinda regret it since i can't play PSO on xbox without that HDD lol. You had to login at least once to even get into the single player for whatever reason.

Can't believe these games are nearly 20 years old. They look amazing!

Keep the lightning. It looks cool. Definitely makes it feel even more classic. Like a snapshot in time. lol

I picked up an xbox from a goodwill for $10 in 2020. I've had so much fun playing games like Midtown Madness 3, Ninja Gaiden and Halo on it. I should really try that HDMI mod.

Can't believe this came out before I was born. I still have mine, but I haven't used it in a while.

what they need to do is make it where the backwards compatibility emulator just wraps itself around the files on the disk by copying them not downloading them and they won't have these issues

Great take, great job on the soldering! I have an OG Xbox that was gifted to me when new. I think it had only been out for a year, maybe less. I bought a Chinese component cable for it and have it hooked into my receiver. The receiver then processes the signal and converts it into HDMI. Pretty sweet setup; looks amazing, although I haven't played it for a LONG TIME. I prefer to play OG games on the XOneS, although I have a LOT of OG games that don't have back compat support, so they HAVE TO be played EITHER on the OG OR on the 360. Cheers!

Damn. That picture looks so crisp. I'm using a Retrotink to convert the analog component HD to HDMI, but this mod looks way better.

I remember watching the young gamers with their fancy twin analog sticks on that behemoth of a controller. It reminded me of a Dreamcast controller without the VMU. They were so cute. My Vectrex was a tad jealous of that second stick.

Yo this was a dope video dude. And I personally dig that blue lightening g skin. I also kept a good amount of my og xbox games. Fifa 2003 is def one of the funnest soccer experiences one can have. And four player? Forget about it! Awesome fun!

I recommend getting the Suffering series if you can, the 2nd game isn't really any different than the first but it's a fun game that feels like Silent Hill and Doom mixed together

And they added some backwards compatibility to the 360 at some point.. I grabbed aggressive inline a couple months ago just to see if it would play on my series x .... It wouldn't but it worked just fine on my 360
