I still use my original Xbox to this day and I have just given it some TLC as I had to remove the clock capacitor that was leaking as well as the 3 large capacitors near the PSU that had also burst. I also replaced the rubber band in the DVD drive. I have an OSSC so I have no need for an HDMI modification for the machine, and while I can solder, micro-soldering is beyond my limited abilities. I am surprised you didn't mention the clock capacitor issue in this episode, it's definitely something people should be aware of when buying original Xbox consoles.

As someone who owned an original Xbox and lived through that era it was such a fantastic time to be a gamer. That system was so powerful for its time and offered so many new experiences nobody had ever had before in gaming. I bought a xbox that was softmodded with Unleash X and given a 1TB SDD hard drive. I don't have the technical skills to make a hard HDMI change, but I did the the component cables AND a top quality HDMI converter - both of which look fantastic. I installed most of the games in the Xbox library onto the hard drive. I still own all of my original game discs and boxes (over 40 in total) from my days playing it originally. However, having games installed directly to the hard drive without worry of disc read errors or maintenance and NONE of the money of buying a physical disc ever going into the hands of the creators anyway, i have no remorse for downloading the remaining titles I don't own physical copies of.

The 6th generation is by far the oldest generation you can easily hook up to a lot of modern TVs without modification and with generally good results. Component output options on most of the systems, and (even better) the VGA output option on the Dreamcast! And a few DC games even had the option to set a widescreen aspect ratio, since the system didn’t know whether it was on a widescreen TV or not (there were some 480i and 480p widescreen TVs in the early days, but no handshaking that communicated that to the game console). But, yes, HDMI-only TVs are becoming more common so mods like this will have more and more value going forward. But I have been gaming since the first generation (still have my old Pong clone that you hook up to the TV with an RF modulator!) and I appreciate that it’s possible at all to hook many of these 6th-gen systems up to many new TVs still, with the Dreamcast over VGA producing a progressive signal making it (I think) the oldest system to be able to do so without modification.

Keep the lightening skin. One of the Xboxes that I just bought in a lot for repair had a MP3 playlist from the early 2000's, stuff like..Linkin park/Mudvayne/Korn/POD...it was pretty awesome to listen though it, thinking what it must of been like at the time to load it up for the OG user. I was in my early 20's at the time of the console launch, so it was like a time machine for me too. Great video, I think you really hit the point as think thing being a really good answer to PC gaming. I was a console gamer from Atari 2600-PS1 and then moved out and was in that part of my life, got into PC gaming because I bought a P3 for college work and skipped out on the release of the Xbox. I did pick one up around 2004 from my room mate...played mostly Halo and Ninja Gaiden before selling it to get a sweet new white 360..

I was 17 when the OG Xbox came out in 2001... Man, those were some better, simpler times, I'll tell you what. There was none of this pay-to-win bs, no overly long download wait times, and sure as hell no loot box nonsense. It was just me and the boys, a pizza from Domino's and games like Halo 1 and the OG Star Wars Battlefront after a crappy movie from Blockbuster. Damn, those were the days and I miss the fug outta them.

What I'd like to see is more stuff between you and MVG is about replacing the DVD drive as there's a lot at used shops with burned out drives. I now have one that reads all disks but the drive has issues closing completely first.

It lived its life with the skin, keep it on. I don’t know if this had to do with the Mortal Kombat movie or OG Xbox games in general but I know Shaolin Monks went up in price a small bit but then it went back down again. I don’t see Xbox games getting near as expensive as GameCube games. Everyone had a GameCube as a kid and these prices are nostalgia driven as those kids are now 20 years older with disposable income. I really don’t think a lot of kids had Xboxes back then and it was mostly people who were already enthusiasts. It is a great system if you want to collect games to actually play them instead of trying to have a collection to resell later on.

I don't recommend doing this. With HDMI, the colors tend to be darker making it harder to see in dark areas in games. I think it is something to do with how the HDMI conversion occurs. For this reason, the video quality is better with YPBPR cables. Not only this issue, but you also end up being restricted to HDTVs unless you get an HDMI to RCA adapter.

I snagged one a couple of years ago because the Goodwill Outlet was selling it for $5, apparently the orange ring of annoyance at not having an AV cable plugged in was confused for a RROD. I think it would be much easier to just get some HD Component cables for your OG Xbox and run that to a Component to HDMI adapter then to your TV. I don't need this adapter because I run it to a Component Splitter/Selector then to my HD Projector that has Component input. Buying a modded OG Xbox for cheap... doing a 1TB HD swap.... then loading it with all your collection is good times. Was playing some Rainbow Six 3 earlier today.

Morrowind on the OG Xbox I must have put at least 300 hours into it! Loved being away from the PC and playing on a big screen, well 32" at the time!

Thank you pointing out how easy it is to open the Xbox. I was watching an Xbox 360 disassembly tutorial one time and the guy was saying how much easier it is to get a 360 open than an original Xbox and I'm thinking "you've opened them, yourself, so you know how untrue what you're saying is". So weird. What other console is this easy to take apart, (excluding earlier generations, I know the PS1 and N64 were easy to take apart).

I’m lucky enough to have a really good game store nearby. They always have a ton of original Xbox’s in stock as well as pretty much any console you want. I saw an Atari Jaguar there the other day.

I bought one in mint condition in 2020. I bought the POUND HD Link HDMi converter for the XBox and I play Amped 2 at 720p upscaled to 1440p with the mClassic and my TV does the upscaling to 4K itself. It looks insane.

what they need to do is make it where the backwards compatibility emulator just wraps itself around the files on the disk by copying them not downloading them and they won't have these issues

Great take, great job on the soldering! I have an OG Xbox that was gifted to me when new. I think it had only been out for a year, maybe less. I bought a Chinese component cable for it and have it hooked into my receiver. The receiver then processes the signal and converts it into HDMI. Pretty sweet setup; looks amazing, although I haven't played it for a LONG TIME. I prefer to play OG games on the XOneS, although I have a LOT of OG games that don't have back compat support, so they HAVE TO be played EITHER on the OG OR on the 360. Cheers!

I remember watching the young gamers with their fancy twin analog sticks on that behemoth of a controller. It reminded me of a Dreamcast controller without the VMU. They were so cute. My Vectrex was a tad jealous of that second stick.
