The substation you plopped in Otter Lake would be right next to the dam; from an efficiency point of view, it’s best to elevate your voltage next to your generation due to loss on cables and transformer losses, especially if the utility would elevate the voltage level to a high voltage that would require a big substation such as the one you placed down. Awesome video as always. I work with renewable plants’ development and usually find myself on the other end of the cities’ urban planning committee stick 😂 So it’s nice to understand a little better how city ordinances and land conditioning are placed and thought through. And then there’s learning how to make better cities on C:S so win-win. Cheers from Brazil!

10:10 - i think that transformer should be closer to dam. 22:25 - some pedestrians walk from train station. Maybe make a bus route from train station - through all Shorewood or just to high school? Regarding the same commercial buildings popping up, I think it's worth noting that CS will always spawn the largest building that will fit in a zoned area, so if you always make zones that are 4x4, you will only get the 4x4 buildings, which are probably only a small fraction of the theme you are using. it's worth trying to create a variety of lots or create a theme which is specifically for lots of a certain size

Seeing as you plan on using the existing baseball fields, my suggestion would've been to use the land directly across the highway from Lion's Park for Shorewood High School. There's a nearby arterial for road access, and you could either add a road or two or some paths to connect to the park (tunnels or bridges over/under the highway). That way they wouldn't even have to bus students to the fields, they can walk. See bird's eye view at 13:26

34:17. A corner section like that, in most us cities, would either be a park/memorial or a small commercial, like a local corner bar or mom and pop grocer or a auto repair joint. If there was a house on it at all it might be some large classical building house that's become a local landmark or historical building. (like Evamentry's Voight House) As far as homes goes. I get everything set at 1x2, 2x3, 3x4 then have a few 3x3 and 4x4 for corner lots, with 4x4's also being used for a small wealthy gated community. I keep a 1 tile spacing between buildings in rural areas, with 2 tiles (sometimes 3) between in rural areas. The 1 tile spacing gives some side yard and room for fences or trees. Some areas can be fairly close, like the Chicago bungalow neighborhoods. Thats where RICO really pays off because I can push them a bit closer together. As for commercial, for any particular shopping area, I would have more then 2 high density "anchor" stores, with the rest being low density. You will be over run with traffic. High density being the obvious national or regional name brand supermarkets, multiplex theaters, and big box stores we all know. Even a downtown area same issue. the concept of the multi story inner city store really isn't a thing outside of a few flagship stores in NY, Chicago, London and Paris. That doesn't mean a classic Main Street type commercial store doesn't use up all2 or 3 floors, as they often use the second or third story for storage or internal offices, but they are only open to customers on the first floor. The "Are You Being Served" type stores with different departments on taking up whole floors isn't really a thing anymore. Again, massive traffic issues in a tight downtown area. Maybe 1 or 2 multistory anchors on opposite ends of the district if your going for a Magnificent Mile or Mall of America type downtown shopping district, but thats it. To be honest, high density shopping in the game is a bit overkill. just couple anchor stores here and there, maybe some kind of tourist trap area (like a casino or resort) but most players way over do it and there's where most of their traffic issues come from. When using Rico, make everything local and set everything to Lv 1. This makes things easier in the long run. It's too easy to get complacent and not thinking about the neighborhood level and plopping down a bunch of lv4/5's in an otherwise lv2/3 neighborhood, then moments later everything dies. Lv1 everything, historical on and they will level up to what the neighborhood is real quick.

Looking good! Shorewood is all grown up. One thing that strikes me about Shorewood and Van Buren is the high density blocking the views and amenity of the coast. In most cities where i have lived or visited, where there is a main road following the coastline, the foreshore is usually left as a public reserve. Higher density buildings are developed on the opposite side of the road. It feels like you've built walls of density that completely block views and access to the water except for those wealthy enough to live in those buildings. Everybody deserves a dog park, but even better if they can walk the dog along the foreshore!

I think you'd run into issues removing the five shacks at the tip of the triangle at 40:30 that "drive you up the wall." That cluster looks similar to the "Bay View Puddler's Cottages" centered on 2508 S Superior St in Milwaukee. A group of small houses in a similar feeling neighborhood that was recently under consideration for historic status. I can't find a lot of articles saying what came from that push, as that temporary designation has probably passed. However, some painter mod to change the colors to a nice bold, diverse and friendly feel reminiscent of the shotgun houses in New Orleans could really help integrate those into a community while maintaining the history of the area. Suggesting replacing those buildings on a video so close to Labor Day would really bring out some quite organized community resistance due to their proximity to the site of the Bay View Rolling Mill Massacre. Those houses have become emblematic of the workers who gave up their lives to secure a better future for others. Even if there isn't official historic status, those houses getting knocked down is the kind of thing that would swiftly end several people's career in civics. That being said, some of the newer (I.E. Post WWI) housing in that area, even on that block, can be dealt with by burning through a bit of political clout and goodwill that one earned over a lifetime. A search for "Bay View Zielinski House" shows some of the controversy involved with that. And some of the cottages that aren't in that cluster of five, well, it would probably take the building being condemned for safety reasons. Which would also take some work, but... Also, a tiny bit of deliberate MoveIt Mulligan on how these cottages would have actually been constructed in the first place, that's just playing the game.

I went to a high school in a small-moderately sized town that served a good portion of a rural county and that's more like how it was. It wasn't public transit, but it was a lot of school bus routes that each went out around certain areas, turned around and came back* to the school. (*Although a lot of the more rural drivers parked the buses at their houses and just started their route each morning from far out)

@@one30am Even more reason to do so in Clearwater County! Though I didn't necessarily mean schoolbuses. Regular routes would work fine as well. But that may be my non-American brain thinking. My high school in the middle of Amsterdam barely had enough places to park for the teachers. Everyone just came in by bike (obviously) or public transit, with multiple buslines, a tramline and even trains and metro in walking distance

You can absolutely make a pedestrian connection between two roads. When the sidewalk textures merge together, you have a valid pedestrian connection, and you don't need to draw a path to make it connect.

33:33 a lot of counties in Kentucky have county water going to rural roads now. no more going to the water tower to fill up the tank on the back of the truck to fill up the tank behind the house! We just got it 2 years ago & our cabin is like 45 minutes west of E-town (middle of nowhere) & i think most rural counties supply running water now. but no sewers, cell service or internet lol.

This is a great build. I've been with you all the way. It would be really nice to see a realistic live music venue. I propose two, one near a metro area like Red rocks or (keeping the WI vibe) Alpine Valley and one destination venue such as The Gorge Amphitheater in Washington. I think this would look awesome and really give the map some life.

With Costco on one side, and Van Buren traffic flowing past the golf course, I think the golf course people would buy a long thin strip of land for some luxury homes and a long thin park for some separation. They might also lobby for improvements to highway connections to Van Buren and a bypass road.

on the shore line you should take inspiration from this town in Michigan called New Buffalo I think it would look very nice and be an amazing fit

I missed the in n out when it popped up. As a SoCal guy, In n Out is very picky about where they build. They will only build in communities of 50,000+ population or places where the traffic would support it. They own the majority of the land that they build on because they buy land sometimes decades before they build in an area. They use their own construction crews. Not a criticism, just info about this SoCal staple. I love this series. Keep up the great work.

Those odd shaped blocks, the Trangulars, could maybe take a park and raise property value? Maybe even one of those 2x2 swing parks you can find on the workshop?

That green space at the 6:30 mark that gets trees to fill in? That'd make a good spot for a neighborhood dog park.

So, your intro is right, planning does prevent that. But, that is every old town in USA. Drive around some old towns and that is what you see. Everything has to start somewhere.

I find it very real when you say a quick way to make enemies is urbanizing a rural area. I told a friend who lives in cities once that city folk can move out here as long as they don't bring their city with them.

I don't know about anything else, but I'd like a mini episode or something else talking about buildings in CWC that'd be on the NRHP. I'm kind of obsessed with the NRHP at the moment. Maybe a channel in the discord with screenshots of the building in question, and a brief (or detailed) description. Edit: And to add to my previous paragraph, a historic village like Sauder Village in Ohio might be fun. Like a place designed to look 1800s, and used to educate children. Maybe some camping and county parks too. Edit again: A good team name for the Shorewood High School could be the Shorewood Lions, after Lion's Park

At 36:40 the line up object didn't work correctly because you had also selected the tree behind the middle house. You can see the tree moving when you are moving them, and it's highlighted green. I should also remember this tool when I'm building my city. Don't tell others, but you are my favorite C:S content creator, keep up the good work.

Or maybe that one of those duplicate houses had an tree included in it, seems unlikely.

At 41:20 there is something wrong with the configuration of the big intersection to the highway, for some reason many cars are turning to the side road and heading in to the intersection that way, instead of continuing the main road. Seem to be doing it still after side road and the main road tweaks. Lane arrows looked like they would have all the options to go there, but they still wanted to take the detour anyway. Now the side road probably has bigger speed limit.

I think it would be interesting to see a Michigan left implemented somewhere in the build just as a callback to this being a different version of the U.P, though I’m not that sure they are very common up there. But just a thought

You should add dirt desire paths around the high school! those kids are DEFINITELY cutting across the grass whenever they can.

You left the street light from the original Whole Foods parking lot that you "moved for later" in the middle of the street. Would also like to see the intersections by the new high school widened a bit to further increase visibility for the young drivers and make it easier for the school buses to navigate those corners. The IHOP you placed on the much improved main drag in Shorewood is now sitting abut to the IHOP you already had in Shorewood with a large parking lot around it too. Maybe replace with a Texas Roadhouse or similar restaurant that would fit Shorewood's vibe?

Something I keep noticing both in real life and even more so here is a complete lack of planning for delivery vehicles. In particular semi trucks. Whole foods has a dock and a half. Not just that but it's going to be very difficult just backing into the dock as well. I've noticed similar issues in previous episodes as well. Can't tell you how many times I've heard from customers "oh we get trucks in that dock all the time" my reply is always "yeah small trucks maybe but definitely no full sized semis hauling 53ft trailers". Don't know how people expect a 53ft trailer to fit with only 40ft of space in front of a dock. Much less the tractor pulling the trailer to fit as well or having space to maneuver

Costco's gas station is pretty broken. Costco gas stations have limited hours and great prices, so they tend to have lines like Chick-fil-A or In-N-Out. Because of this, there's usually road access directly into the gas station, a large staging area for multiple lines of cars, and the outflow is usually directed straight to the rest of the parking lot.

30:17 So...have you been to La Crosse, WI? We moved up here from Indiana, and I was absolutely amazed to see amazingly tiny, literally 800 sq. ft. houses being listed for as much as $200K. And they're all packed together like sardines!! Hell, in Richmond, IN, you can get a 3000 sq. ft. Victorian era home for literally $60K. Even fully renovated, it's still easy to find housing under $100K. Wisconsin, in general, is just waaay too expensive. Sure, it's pretty here...but not THAT pretty. Kwik Trip does make things easier though. Yeah, those donuts are quite nice.
