I am getting an autism evaluation as a 34 year old adult. I talk about my reasons and why I've decided in adulthood to find out if I'm autistic. Autism is a spectrum and it can be extremely difficult for an adult female to be diagnosed so I take you along with me in autism testing process as a girl.

If you don’t have anything nice to say then just click out of the video. It baffles me that everyone screams about how I only talk about my kids’ autism and then when I finally open up about MYSELF, nothing about my kids, to share my own struggles, naysayers are here to try to debunk that or say how obsessed I am with autism. I made these videos because it was requested. I make the titles I do to make them SEARCHABLE and sometimes the titles seem odd because that’s the best way to word it to get the keywords in. Kindness is free 🤷‍♀️

Our LANDing Crew What...do they expect you to talk about on an autism family channel? 🙄 You’re good, we really appreciate you sharing this journey especially because a lot of women your age wouldn’t have been diagnosed and don’t know how to seek a dx now. It’s really good info, we’re rooting for you to find those answers to your questions 🥳

I'm not even a minute in but I had to pause and say two of my grandsons are on the spectrum, they are 8 and 9 now, and the more I learn about it the more I wonder about myself. It would explain a lot. I didn't even know adults could be tested if they weren't diagnosed as kids. Looking forward to this video!

I was thinking the same thing. I have a son who is on the spectrum, and was diagnosed in 2012. I've never been tested or diagnosed, but I'm pretty sure I'm on the spectrum as well. It explained many things for me too. I have heard that adults could be tested, but I have no plans to do so.

You just explained more about this eval than any doctor I have faced for my little girl and I am so beyond grateful for your channel. I fear what’s a head because I don’t understand it. The lack of information that doctors are willing to share is unacceptable and I’m so glad you found the right area to move to. We are in the fight of our lives to find a diagnosis for my daughter and I am praying that this coming year will bring us those answers and the help she needs to be the best her she can be. Thank you for being so brave to share with your viewers. As always Steph such a wonderful video. Love you and your family and pray that everything lays right in place for you. You deserve it.

You explained this so well! I relate to sooo many of the things you talked about (music in the car, feeling overwhelmed with things everyone else does with no problems, insomnia, etc.) I've been wanting to get evaluated for a couple years now but haven't started the process at all. It feels like my whole life there has been something missing, a peice that isn't clicking. Possibly it could be an autism diagnosis. Thank you so much for this video ❤

I commend you on talking about this publicly. Thank you for again sharing your life, family, and your journey! I wish you nothing but great things 💜♥️ I’m a chronic pain patient and I have insomnia...from pain. It is very frustrating. It is a term used loosely but, as you and I know it’s very much the true insomnia not just figurative speech.

Stephanie, you absolutely don’t suck! But I know exactly what you mean as I have felt that way on and off all my life. I am 45 and went for my neuropsych evaluation earlier this year. My daughter is 9 and was diagnosed ASD L3 at age 6. After three years of researching for her, something just clicked. She was also getting older and reminding me of myself in ways that aren’t typical. So my diagnosis was GAD, and I was definitely bordeline ASD. My particular profile is such that I was able to become really good at masking. But after 45 years, GAD is the result of that masking (for me) and can be treated now. But the doctor said had I been tested as a child, I definitely would have received an ASD L1 diagnosis. Knowing definitely helps! I have a lot of sensory defensiveness too and my husband has been WAY more understanding now that we know why. Thanks for making these videos! ❤️

I was diagnosed this spring as I finished high school and thought I was doing one last general assessment. Nope, I was diagnosed with autism. It's funny thinking about different shows/youtubers I have watched for years and not clicking the fact that I've been watching them so much because they are also autistic or show characters with autism (known or not known to the audience) like me. There is soooo much I want to learn about what this means for me but I have no idea where to start!

I’ve only watched the first 3 minutes of this video so far, but I want to say that I was diagnosed with ASD a year and a half ago at the age of 39 after being misdiagnosed with so many different things since I was a child. It’s been really helpful for me to know the real reason for why I am the way that I am. I’ve had so many “aha moments” and so many things in my life FINALLY make sense! I do wish that I had been diagnosed correctly when I was a child though for many different reasons, but I guess it’s better late than never!

TW: Psychiatric hospital . . . . . . . . I was diagnosed at 14 during extreme autistic burnout that, combined with depression, landed me in a psychiatric hospital. My diagnosis isn’t 100% accurate. I was diagnosed with aspergers despite having low-moderate support needs. I need about as much support and guidance with academics and daily living skills as a 6-8th grader and I’m 17. I also am visibly not typical, and even with supports in place, I cannot look “normal” as I do not make eye contact, stim frequently, and if I don’t know someone very well I use very short sentences, don’t face them when speaking to them, and sometimes even walk away mid-conversation. I also use AAC sometimes despite not having a language delay (I actually was in the 100th percentile for language when I was 18 months old) and that’s not usually associated with aspergers or “level 1 autism”. Eventually I hope to be re-evaluated so I can have a more accurate diagnosis of ASD 2. I wasn’t diagnosed in the usual way; I am pretty sure I never even did the ADOS. When I was in the psych hospital (the 2nd time) the psychiatrist on call was also an autism specialist. Him observing me for 8 days + the testing he did do made him certain I am autistic. I want the full eval but my psych says it’s not nessecary. My diagnosis really answered so many questions for me. Unfortunately where I live there are very few services for autistic adults without an intellectual disability. I need OT but can’t get it. I also might need supported living (I may not be able to live entirely independently) but I have no idea if I’d get it. (Hope you don’t mind all these somewhat unrelated thoughts)

This is why I got myself assessed. Growing up, I always thought there was something wrong with me. Would always say my brain works differently. I just didn't understand. Now that I have the label of ASD and ADHD, I'm starting to understand myself more. Of why I did things the way I did, why I struggle so much before, and now. Like typical people don't get excited that they got out of bed early and brushed their teeth and went for a walk. But I was so excited that I brushed my teeth. I was in such a bad routine, I struggle day to day. I know it's going to take me more to get my life on track. I will need medication for the adhd, and get therapy for my difficulties as well. But now I know. Also, I'm 28.

The way you talked about sensory overload and not wanting to be touched somedays was soo relatable to me... my husband's love language is physical touch! I specifically feel touched out by my children. I also hate loud music when other people are playing it or when all kinds of noise is happening (talking, playing, TV etc all at once) makes me super anxious and irritable.

Hey Stephanie, I want to thank you for all you post on your channel. Your channel (among others) helped me realize that I have ADHD, and get diagnosed then medicated. But more importantly (to me personally) you made me realize that I have sensory issues and I have my entire life. I was such a picky eater growing up, and had big texture issues both with food and other things. For example: I would get in trouble at school and summer camps for refusing to do paper mache, I just couldn’t touch it. I still can’t touch pumpkin guts. You even helped me realize that I definitely stim, I just mask well as many AFAB autistic/ADHD do. If you happen to know if the sensory issues and the stimming are common for ADHD or not I’d love to know! But no worries I know that you are not a professional. But anyway, thank you for so much you do on KZbin. It does not go unnoticed. You are so helpful. I hope that your evaluation is helpful for you and any future medical professionals!

10:30 I hate water on my face too! it caused no end of trouble when I took swimming lessons. I also took forever to be able to tolerate showers, and still keep my face dry as much as possible. I ONLY wash my face in the shower (because it's faster and more efficient, therefore less torture), with grapefruit face wash. I also hate makeup for similar reasons.

When I got diagnosed with endometriosis, although I had to have surgery, I was SO happy. There was finally an explanation about why I had to leave or miss school as a kid, why I had to run out of classes in college or take sick days at work when other women didn't have the same problem. When I got into the endometriosis community it was... 🤯. They were describing my life, like you said. The exact same pain (which by the way it's like a knife twisting on your guts from the inside). Whatever the outcome is, you'll feel so relieved! Good luck!!

I'm 49 and just starting the process of getting diagnosed for autism. I totally agree with you. In my case it is all out of pocket because my lovely ((sarcasm)) won't cover it. I've done online tests which all come back high for autism which I thought at the time was enough but I suffer from imposter syndrome. All my kids are on the spectrum. My husband was like "Just do it, seek a diagnosis so you stop questioning if you are or not." I have been giving myself grace when I recognize the burnouts and not forcing social events when I don't feel like it. I get all my sensory issues so I'm not going nuts about it anymore, I get it now, I'm understanding myself. Originally I didn't think I was autistic, I just knew I was weird. It wasn't till I was watching a video on autism for my oldest son because I questioned if he was high funtioning autistic. Well it turned out that I was like "Hold up, I feel like they're talking about me." I was in shock so I started watching more videos and reading books on autistic women.

I can identify with a lot of what you’re saying! I wasn’t diagnosed until 22, like you I was diagnosed with bipolar and many people said I wasn’t bipolar. One of my therapists mentioned that i appeared to be making repititive movements and I seemed to not have the typical emotive language and I seemed to lack prosody of my voice. I was seeking a diagnosis to understand myself, not for anything else.

I have a provisional autism diagnosis by a neurologist, but the neuropsych I saw didn't help me. They said I needed to have my insomnia and hallucinations under control before they would consider that I have autism or ADHD. Which is ridiculous because autism often comes with insomnia and sometimes people have other comorbid conditions. I did get diagnosed with ADHD at another place but it was just a psychologist not a neuropsych eval. Also I'm very stereotypically autistic. I'm "female" and I'm "gifted" but there was no excuse for everyone to miss my autism as a child. To this day I spend hours a day rocking and humming and I have since I was little. Lots of other stereotypical activities. And I'm only 26, this wasn't like "a long time ago when it was harder to get diagnosed."

I'm a bit of a junkie for learning more out myself (good and bad), so if I felt like something was different about me in a different way, I would want to know if I could. I say good for you! Interesting that you mentioned things that fall under sensory issues and I have some of the same quirks (like only enjoying loud music/sounds if I'm the one controlling the volume and not liking water on my face). It never even occurred to me that those could be sensory-related.

Hey I am 48 and sometimes people think I am on the spectrum.. I have a MS Ed and taught SpEd for about 17 years... I do not get people... I also have an extensive trauma history and complex PTSD may be more the correct diagnosis .... but I had one of my few "friends" take her name off my son's care provider list... without telling me.. I never really worked her but I still needed people on the list to show if something arose I would have coverage ... and I needed her name on the list.. and she did that to me .. :( very sad about it.. my reaction to this blow actually makes me think I am on the spectrum ... it should not be that big of a deal... I appreciate you blog on this subject. I too have been totally dismissed over concerns, nothing fully addressed.. :(

TW: I feel comfortable sharing this with you, so I’m 23 and currently getting a diagnosis here in England and I had actually tried going to the doctors over my mental health from the age of 12 as was fully aware out of my friend group I just wasn’t seeing the world the same as everything else and that I couldn’t cope with certain situations, because I was different I had actually tried ending my life multiple times as I just couldn’t cope anymore, I still can’t, so it took 8 years of my doctors saying I was fine I’m just dyspraxic(diagnosed at age 6) it wasn’t till January this year that a doctor finally referred me to specialist, they tested me on things relevant to sensory issues and other things and with anything over 6 being considered autistic I scored a 9 and also scored a 9 for ADHD which I didn’t even realise, so now the test has been done I have to wait for my results to be sent to other professionals to officially give me the diagnosis which can take up to three years, I spent my entire childhood and teen life utterly hating myself and I still have issues with it I just wish someone would have actually listened to me.

You saying that you were diagnosed with bipolar disorder and dont believe that you actually are bipolar really got me thinking........ I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 21 after my father decided he didn't want to be married to my mom anymore (or with any woman for that matter). I spent 2 weeks in the psych unit then too. I have never felt that I am bipolar but didn't know how to explain how I felt/feel. I have always been a MAJOR sensory avoider. I absolutely hate wearing socks, don't like anybody to touch me for any reason, can't stand tags in my shirts, can't stand loud sounds/music unless I can control it, can't stand people chewing with their mouths open or smacking food/gum....ect.....and more I can't think of right now. I live in small town Kentucky where we don't even have an actual psychiatrist within 150 miles.... I see a counselor and a psych nurse practitioner but she won't change my meds, only change the dose. I really, truly feel that I am on the spectrum but don't know where to start because of the lack of resources here locally..... Oh, and the closest psychiatrist is in another state and I have Medicaid so I can't go there. I'm just about at my wits end and don't know what to do. I lost my mom in 2017 and just feel like my whole world has fallen apart and I just don't know where to go from here....

Guess I have sensory sensitivity too. I’m the same way with the loudness. If I turn it up I’m okay. I also can’t stand a bag sound unless I’m the one doing it. Sometimes I don’t hear it. But sometimes it’s like overload in my brain. Smacking and chewing and all that I can’t take it.

He has quirky traits but definitely not enough to warrant a diagnosis. I have pretty classic textbook traits. The traits he has are also explained by ADHD which he has

I’m honestly starting to question about myself but, my daughter as well! She’s 5 and I’ve just noticed that in most of her pictures she’s not looking at the camera. The other day she told me mommy plz don’t put the tooth brush in my mouth I don’t like how it feels it’s too fast. She’s constantly asking for her “ soft” pants b/c buttons bug her and taking her hair down. She also REALLy likes unicorns .... I keep 2nd guessing myself b/c she’s pretty social. I had a conversation with my sons OT last week and she said it’s worth a eval. I’m calling the insurance company on Monday to request they find a provider for a full Psychological eval.

Such good information! I feel like I developed sensory issues after I was pregnant, I hate when things are too loud, have times when I can’t stand being touched, and have a lot of food texture issues that started right when I got pregnant.

Ally, you are evaluated by a PhD level neuropsychologist. They evaluate many domains, up to 8 different ones over a period of 8-9 hours. The results are explained to you and shared with you how you can accommodate in your daily life.

@@hallymlet for me i was apart of VESID for a " learning disability not other wise specified." which is basically what my school district gave me so they didnt have to pay for the evaluation..... a school psychologist had suggested i had NVLD on my IEP and I asked VESID what that meant and then i did research and found out NVLD is a neuroevelopmental disability that is associated with a variety of developmental disabilities ( i was pissed because no one told me).. instead it was just lightly put on my IEP.

I'm considering getting an evaluation for myself as well. My 2 year old was diagnosed with ASD and expressive speech delay, in June. My 10 year old, was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 6, and I just received his diagnosis letter after his Autism evaluation. He has level 3 autism, and social anxiety disorder. He is verbal. He speaks similar to Noah, actually. He just doesn't really understand how some words are used, but that's another story. My daughter has serious sensory issues. She hasn't been diagnosed, but I haven't made the appointment for her evaluation because I'm just trying to figure out one at a time😩 My youngest brother is on the spectrum and so is my little sister. I'm wanting to do an evaluation for myself because it would make so much sense, but I'm scared 😩

I always knew I was different. I am going to pursue diagnosis. I am 26 years old. I notice some things about my girl also, so plan on getting her checked also. It is hard because I have some people that don't know and think I am "normal," but I know now that I heavily mask around certain people so that is probably why.

I’ve been diagnosed with bipolar 1 and c-ptsd and I noticed finding personal connections to each of the behaviors that made you start to wonder if you were on the spectrum... I feel like a lot of these behaviors also go in sync with c-ptsd and trauma... but now I have this weird feeling.. 👀

I’ve never been evaluated but I have a fabric issue where I don’t like the feel of jeans or when people scratch them. Then sound gives me goosebumps. And the fabric of thick towels or towels in general I am getting goosebumps typing this!!! Dish towels too. And the corners of each towel has that bump part of the towel that I think seals it? I don’t know but it makes me get goosebumps touch it our scratching or touching it. Would this be a sensory issue?

I was diagnosed bipolar in my 30s because their is a strong bipolar family trait but medication never helped and I dont relate to most symptoms when my children was diagnosed with autism I clicked all the traits I would like a diagnosis to validate that I'm not crazy and like you understand myself. Though I'm not shore my parents would help me obtain an assessment with their knowledge so at present I'm self diagnosed

Do you have any advice on getting a partner to understand that me not wanting intimate touch isn’t personal? I’m having him have trouble accepting an autism diagnosis in general because he just doesn’t understand it as much as I do. And it’s hard for me to articulate what I feel because obviously I have struggles with interpersonal communication.

No 🤣 it’s normal for a child to take a favorite show or movie and do imaginary play with it. But Noah (and myself) would take a shoe and re-enact exact scenes as that doesn’t take imagination but you get to be in it and relive it.

No, most people don’t have all of them together. It’s insulting and minimizing to say “oh well I struggle with that one thing so ALL your struggles are invalid” and you would never understand unless you went through it and that’s OKAY. That’s not your fault but just disregarding it is not okay. This was a video where I summed up a few things, not everything.
