I interview Ozzi Jarvinen founder of Iglu, a remote IT software company. Ozzi started Iglu from his spare bedroom in Chiang Mai and now over 10 years later employs over 250 people. However, Ozzi is leaving Thailand and has what I think is a very valid reason to leave. In this interview we discuss why he's leaving and how he grew his company Iglu. #thailand #digitalnomadinthailand #thailandbusiness

I retired at 55 in 2011 and in 2017 I moved to Bangkok after 41 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. I love it here. I’ve always lived in suburbs and this is my first time living in a big city. The city environment doesn’t bother me at all. Air quality is an issue in Bangkok from about mid-December through March. The few worst days I’ve also experienced in the US. It mostly is due to agricultural burning in Thailand and the SE Asian region. We are building a house in the Isaan countryside so I will leave Bangkok next year. I would never want to work here. I am happy to have made my money in the US and to enjoy it here now and put distance from US politics and culture.

After living 13 years in the east the move temporarily back to the west was a painful cultural shock and a mistake. The lack of consideration for other people, Rudeness, selfish and often dangerous behavior, and the huge cost increase for everything are not worth it. The food also tastes better in the east. 😘

It's very different to live back in the western world after being immersed in Thai culture and people for many years. The first year back may be great but then it kicks in how sterilised and homogenised the western world has become. There are many great parts of Thailand without air problems if you so choose. Good luck.

The back up plan goes without saying. Just don't trust complete strangers and ex pat's. The Western hemisphere is actually worse than the East,I mean Ireland? Is it even an option? A great way to take advantage of the current situation in Ireland (let's face it they can't even elect a government) is to lease your property and live off the desperation of the current generation. They're a guaranteed source of income and you've a monthly income for nothing. For €1600 a month you can live like a lord in Thailand, especially outside Bangkok. That's just one suggestion. Alternatively, you can profit from the Irish incompetence by selling your larger property, buying a smaller one in Ireland. Then take the capital saved and invest in business or live off the money as an ad infinitum holiday doing border runs. Just two suggestions to take advantage of Ireland. There's

Living in Thailand also 12 years can understand the logic of leaving. My first 4 years I did live in BKK and now I cannot understand that whenever I go back. Just the dirt, the heath is just too much to live an acceptable life. So did move north and enjoy spring time back in Europe as the temperature just gets too high. Going green fast is the only way out to create a decent life in Thailand but as I did hear in the video not profitable enough for politicians.

I lived in south east asia for a while and started to get sick of the usual problems. I went back home to canada and was happy for maybe 6 months before I once again started to despise it here. The people look miserable and nobody knows their neighbors. I do well with women where ever I am but canadian girls are militant social justice warriors that will die alone as crazy cat ladies. Nobody looks happy here. I am already packing my shit and headed back to asia. I took for granted so many things like smiling people, sunshine, culture, girls that dont rant about social justice and so on. there is even a weird depressing vibe in vancouver that has bad energy. South east asia is far from perfect but my god the west is such a bummer. The woke movement is a disease that will break the western world.

i have been in thailand 29 yrs and my concern about air quality has increased alot in the last few years as the need for business, specifically cars for more and more people and the pollution from road construction and of course high humidity and temperature mixing with the pollution - covid of course has put more obstacles on mobility but i'm looking to find a location in thailand with better air quality or if that fails finding another country - a serious problem

I feel sad for this gentleman for leaving Thailand after 17 years. To me i dream of Thailand every day. I do go to Thailand every year. But because of this bloody pandemic. I haven't been able to go to my favourite holiday country [Thailand] I wanted to settle in Thailand when I went to Phuket in 2000 but foreigners are not allowed to buy property only a Condo. I have traveled quite bit, but Thailand is very close to my heart. I wish this gentleman all the best in the future, and I hope whatever he endeavours is the right decision. Good Luck.

You have some inaccuracies in your post/comment foreigners can buy property they cannot buy land. You can lease the land and build or buy a house on the land however annual leases are still a good idea you do not have to own the property to make a profit the fact is you can easily invest cash and with the capital gains earnings pay for renting a property and still maintain your principal equity. Lots of options

I enjoyed the interview Pete, far more interesting than travel vlogs. Great to hear a foreigner making good in Thailand, particularly overcoming the bureaucracy. Although the pollution is a major factor, living in CM, it appears there's also a desire for new opportunities and experiences. Returning to the west is not necessarily a hard move, I did it after 9 years in Asia, then spent 17 years building a business in UK, before returning to retire in Thailand. My Thai wife also enjoyed the novelty of living in UK, interspersed with frequent long trips to Thailand and elsewhere around the globe. Good luck Ozzi. Change is as good as a rest....

Hi Pete, Ozzi is an interesting person with many different facets. I first saw him a few months ago in a video by Chris (RW4U). His almost autonomous house in Chiang Mai was shown, which I admired a lot. In your interview he now shows a completely different side of himself. I think slash-and-burn air pollution is unfortunately nothing new in Asia and it's a shame he decided to leave Thailand because of that. Luckily I don't feel any of that here where I live. It is hard to measure the health impact of pollution in Thailand. I have worked in health care for many years in the UK and in Thailand and I can offer this observation: there are far fewer asthmatics in Thailand than the UK, and when they have an attack, it's rarely severe. Many families who move from the UK to Thailand find that their respiratory troubles improve. There are far fewer cases of allergy in Thailand. And as for covid, the statistics in Thailand are far better than virtually all European countries, in terms of case number and deaths per population size.
