If it is a katana classified as such according to japanese law, that is excempt from weapons law, because it is a registered art piece even though it is a real sword. Not katana swords are prohibited, while not weapon replicas also exist.

This is everything I've ever wanted. The lifestyle and aesthetic of the old world like that beautiful garden, traditional houses, home made everything from food to the clothes, and the quiet country life. But I also want the benefits of the new world like toilets, antibiotics, low infant mortality rate, and not having to worry about basic survival. This is literally the dream.

We did in Kyoto. The owner was a 100 year old man who screamed at the guests if they went out at night. Was met at the door by a couple of Brits who were checking out after a 1 night stay because the old man freaked out every time they left to go sightseeing. We immediately returned to the train station and went back to Osaka. 😂

She mentioned "AirBNB", but actually Japan has always had AirBNB-like little family ryokans that one can stay at. I often used them decades ago when I was young and traveling in Japan. The family would often rent out a room in their residence for hotel-like stays. Even though the stays were enjoyable, I didn't use them all the time because it always felt like I was a guest in someone's house so sometimes I preferred just staying at an inexpensive hotel where I didn't feel obligated to keep to certain hours when going out at night and returning.

True that the plane tickets are expensive. At least if you're not chinese, korean or from another east/SE asian country. BUT (and that is a capital but...): Once you're there, it is actually not that expensive to be in (lodging, food etc), compared to most other developed countries. I’ve stayed in one of these! It had an big outdoor bath in the courtyard. It was amazing! The host was so kind and she taught us how to make match.
