Hi Lucas! Thank you so much for inspiring me to get into Field Notes. I've been using pocket notebooks for many years, but I had never come across Field Notes. Having switched to them, I'm never going back! I get through about one notebook per month and I just started my fifth Field Notes yesterday. The care and detail in their design makes them better than anything I've ever used and it's a joy to carry my Field Notes everywhere. As they are truly pocket-sized, I never go anywhere without my Field Notes and this has made my life so much easier. I work as a primary school teacher and setting out my tasks for the day, planning lessons and making meeting notes are so much better with Field Notes. My students always notice when I switch to a new Field Notes and they're excited when they see me writing and making notes by hand, which is also something I'm happy to develop their interest in. I also use my Field Notes for planning my travels, writing down which bird species I spot and training notes and reflections for jiu jitsu - so everything basically! I also appreciate your advice on Blackwing pencils (I personally prefer the 602) which has also been a great new stationery experience for me. So thank you very much for your heartfelt dedication to Field Notes and the wonderful analogue world of writing materials and writing instruments!

Hi Thomas, thanks for sharing! What a great use of Field Notes - I love that your students are also engaged in the changing of the pocket notebook, that means the notebook is serving so many more people :) I wish I could get through about 1 per month, it usually takes me 6-8 weeks per notebook - going faster would allow me to use up more of my inventory, but I do like the time I get to spend with each one, and how much they wear in. Thanks so much for watching!

You are enabling me to get one. I've always passed by these notebooks but I somehow keep ignoring them. I'll look into it this time. I adore how much you enjoy paper, it's something i relate to. I also don't care much about technical specs -- it's all about the feel. If I have a favorite pen and it doesn't write well with that paper, it's usually used without much joy in it too I just rush to it to get to the next one I prefer 😂thank you for the in depth content. So glad my algorithm is showing this.

I am so happy that I found your channel. I have been trying to find something to fill this itch I've been having. I didn't realize that it was the pocket notebook. In the past I was extremely into being digital so that I can search and share and all that. At work I abruptly switched from keeping all of my notes, thoughts, and lists on my iPad to using a notebook. It's been great, but I need something for my personal life and this is it. The pocket notebook. You have sold me on Field Notes and will be making my first purchase right after I complete this. I am looking forward to more of your videos.

Graphically, Field Notes are beautiful. I was watching a review someone did a while ago and he mentioned that the type face used is Futura. Oddly, even though I love the text, it didn't dawn on me until he identified it. It is my absolute favorite type face...often seen in old issues of Arts & Architecture, books about post-war housing and mid-century advertising. I still use it for my correspondence and my invoices and my business cards. I recently purchased something called a "DDC BRAND "STUFF SHEATH" made of leather that protects the Field Notes. However, using one of those would prevent that velvety texture that you love! Interesting video!
@BlankFirstPage Жыл бұрын
Futura is the best! Super minimal but so stylish. I don't know the graphical terms as to why, but it's extremely pleasing! I have looked at the stuff sheath so many times, but I never end up buying it because of the reason you mention - I need that texture on the notebooks!

It is a really nice overview from a fellow notebook lover :) recently I filtered my youtube bubble and went from apps reviews and productivity hustle to paper notebooks and classical philosophy, and here you are, I'm glad I found you. It is first video that I'm watching, but I looked at your other videos' titles and I want to watch most of them as well. On the field notes: I found an interesting thing about branded notebooks. For about 10 years I have bought very cheap a6 notebooks from a closest store for about 20 cents and they served me as a mini bullet journals, todo lists, memos and so on. But the covers were always some bright chinese crap and that made me not caring so much about it's condition. They were dirty, wet, twisted, but I still used them. But every time as the notebook lose some of it' HP (:D) I cared less about neatness of my writing, clearness, I started to write down some random stuff. I had to change something. Once I decided to make my own notebook. Bought a nice quality paper, cutted it for ideal size for my bag pocket, handsewed, glued to the handcarved leather cover. 48 hours and there we are :) and that changed completely the way I write. The neatness came back, my memos were clear and minimalistic once again, I started to stop and think for a moment, is it some shit or is it a valued information that I want to write down. My point is: Branded products have Value as well as handmade ones, that keeps you care about it. Why people buy Field Notes instead of 20 cent notebooks? Because of this. The added value that makes you care. Keep it going, the Paper is the Way.

I have found over the past few years that I don't enjoy using bullet journals. However, I've recently discovered Field Notes and I'm quite happy with the size. It was the size of the bullet journals that kept me from being consistent. I could easily dictate into my phone, of course, but sometimes I don't want to speak out loud. I really like this video. Thank you.

I also have a notebook love. I already had Field Notes in my mix of notebooks. Raising a small child requires me to have a notebook that I can just grab. I love that Field Notes become beautiful after wear and tear. My daughter sometimes doodles in them (she's almost 2) which I also adore. I make an index on page 0 (the first page) and I proudly put her drawing at the corresponding page number. I have three notebooks, but I carry two. One is for long term lists for example plans I have for our house or projects I am working on. The other like yours is an EDC where I jot down pretty much anything needed for my day or about my day and my daily to do list. I only need a page or two per day. I do use moleskins, but I always use my Field Notes for daily EDC to-do's. Thank you so much for your very entertaining videos. I know a lot of time goes into them and I appreciate it.

Great explanation of why Field Notes are so special. One of my favourites is the oversized Field Notes Pitch Black Set of 2 (3-1/2" × 5-1/2" = 89mm × 140mm), not to be confused with the regular sized set of 3. I used a ruled one at a conference this year - it fits into my jacket pocket and the extra space over the standard version proved very useful. I reordered a pack but chose "Dot-Graph grid" by mistake. This is printed very dark and makes the notebook pretty unusable for me. The lined, however, is perfect.

I would be a Field Notes subscriber if I could choose to only get dot grid paper. I started off with Group Eleven field notes, I have a few left. However, mine don't lay as nicely as yours. When laying on my desk its popped open. I wish it would just lay closed. I did put a clip on it at one point but then realized that took away the quickness and usability I love so much about the notebook. Have you ever carried more than one around with you? What are your thoughts on cases such as Lochby or custom leather covers? Have you used the larger Pitch Black version before? Enjoying your channel, thanks for sharing about our shared interests.
@BlankFirstPage Жыл бұрын
You’re speaking my language. Dot grid is the best! The best solution I have to getting the to lay flat is to really break in the spine. Putting them in the back pocket for a few days will do the trick. I tried the clip thing too and stopped for the same reason. Clipping a pen to the front cover works too, kind of acts like a paperweight. I often carry around 2 - sometimes I’ve started a new one but I’ve still got a to-do or shopping list in the old one, so I keep one in each of my jeans back pockets. Nice and even! I haven’t tried the large format Pitch Black, but I have a set of the standard size ones and I love the cover on those, wears in really nicely. I really like the idea of those custom leather covers, they look so great, but I think I’d feel bad about hiding the field notes itself. I love how worn and feathery the notebooks get through use and I feel like I’d miss out on that by using a cover. Thanks for watching!

I think this is the video you mention that you always have a notebook on you, but sometimes not a pencil. If you are ok with pens, I would recommend checking out Pokka Pens. Super simple, 2 piece pens that carry the size of a chapstick, but when in writing mode, they are a full size pen. Sounds like you would enjoy the simplicity and every day carry quality of them.

I love simplicity and EDC. Have you used the pokka pens yourself? What’s the writing like?
@darthblade2016 Жыл бұрын
@@BlankFirstPage Yes, I have them as part of my daily carry as back-ups mostly, but have a decent amount of writing with them. The writing experience is ok, to be honest. I would say slightly better than a standard Bic or Schneider ballpoint pen. Fairly smooth and would probably be similar to the D1 refill you have in your Liliput ballpoint. The main reason to carry these is the extreme lightness and simple ease of use

Do you have a video showing what you use the FNs books for exactly?
@BlankFirstPage Жыл бұрын
Not specifically, but it’s in the works! I’ve got a few videos where I show my current field notes and talk a bit about what’s gone into them that month. Thanks for watching!

I, too, fell in love with FN a few yearsss back so I totally get it. It made me fell back into the "planning/journaling habit". But then I fell into the fountain pen rabbit hole and found myself in an excruciating decision to steer away from it 🙊🙈🙉 the paper quality isn't just meeting my needs. So I moved on to higher quality japanese paper 😍 These days, I use the FN sized ntbks but with fountain pen friendly paper. It's a win-win 😊 Some days, I still pop out one from my unused collection but sadly revert back to regular pens lol. It's a compromise haha! And I still look at my used and unused collections once in a while. They still spark joy 😊

Agreed the FN paper is not the most fountain pen friendly. I still use my fountain pens in them, accepting the inevitable feathering and bleeding - ‘character’ :) Any recommendations on FN-sized Japanese paper notebooks?

Not a fan of the cover tearing at the spine over time. I’ve had to reinforce the binding with duct tape on one of them
@BlankFirstPage Жыл бұрын
It’s very true they can definitely tear. I think I’ve had one or two where the cover has come off completely, and I’ve had to use tape to secure and reinforce it. But I’m typically moving on to a new one after one or two months and it’s usually not enough time for that much wear to occur on mine.

Just got the full national park set, and I'm am trying to decide what to do with them- they are so pretty I don't want to use them.

Definitely use them! They age really nicely.

4:25 What do you mean by that? Fabriano is a small town in italy that has been producing paper products since 13th century. You could've just searched on google and checked the sources instead of being arrogant

You can accomplish the same thing with a field craft note pad which you can grab for $1 each . They are so overpriced
