It's all relative. Check out what super muscly gorillas at the zoo eat. Not even Derek could eat that much fiber!
@eatplantsloveanimals15 күн бұрын
1. No whole plant food is pure carbs. You're still getting protein. 2. The most satiating food as tested is potatoes, something most people think of as a carb. 3. You could be feeling that way because of your beliefs. The stomach has sensors that signal satiation to your brain based on volume. More fiber == more volume.
@Nobody-Nowhere15 күн бұрын
Its more about the extra protein, protein powders. As those are completely unnecessary unless you are a pro bodybuilder on gear.

@@eatplantsloveanimals Long-term satiety (i.e. after the food has been digested) is determined by caloric content and macronutrient composition. If you eat tons of buttery or fat-heavy food (e.g. croissants, cinnamon rolls, french fries, etc.) to the point of volume satiety for every meal for a whole day, you might feel very full the next morning.

Yep...ditto. At 58 I'm consciously trying to up my protein intake a bit, especially since I don't eat a lot of food/calories. I know it causes me to "waste" some of the protein eaten as it gets burned for energy instead of being used for maintenance/repair.

You are a great teacher as well as recipe creator. I have learned so much!! Thank you. Probably the number one question I get asked by my meat eating friends is “how do you get enough protein??”. Your videos addressing this helps me understand and to share. Even if I don’t need the amount of protein you do because I don’t burn as much , I appreciate knowing how and where to get it in a diverse and tasty way. As a fellow British Columbian, I really like when you show new products you have found. Can’t tell you, how many foods you have suggested are now in my cupboard and fridge ( latest.. What a lot of those doctors don't take into consideration is small people with small appetites. I am a 63 year old female. I am not very big, 5'1'' currently 112 lbs. I would like to get down to 107 but that would cut my calorie intake to about 1200 calories a day or less. I do moderate exercise and try to do a bit of strength training a couple days a week. I have kept track of protein and some days only hit about 25 grams of protein. I only eat once or twice a day. Here it is 3pm in the afternoon and just having my first meal. Some days I do better. When I watch your meals, I think, good lord how does he eat so much. Lol. I have started to incorporate seitan in my diet and that helps a lot. Protein smoothies makes it much easier, too. I have always felt you did the high protein meals for all the skeptics out there. It is very doable to get enough protein, but for small appetites and people that don't need very many calories, it can be a challenge and your videos help so much for ideas. Thanks Derek!

I just finished how not to age from Dr Gregor and he says one of the top ways to slow again is protein restriction. In fact, he says the benefit of fasting is primarily the protein restriction, so fasting mimicking diets that keep calories low and low in protein can replicate the same benefits of fasting all together. Crazy! He’s says average adult should be 40-60g of protein per day for women-men. Assume it’s slightly higher if you are very active. But my question is what’s the balance of good muscle development and slowing aging? That book is changing a lot of my thinking around protein intake. Have you read it? What’s your thoughts?
@Simnettnutrition15 күн бұрын
It's a really interesting book, but he is focusing on ultimate longevity. For me personally, 40-60g protein a day is too low, and even without trying, I eat more protein than that. I think if it works for some people, that's great, but I don't think he is taking into account people who are very active/do heavy strength training in those numbers.

Thank you. Good points...and its tricky to satisfy everyone's needs in a few videos...or thousands of videos across the media. Overload. Each person is different...and when people stop obsessing looking for a magic pill answer... Getting adequate overall nutrition on a plant based diet can be simple and can be a challenge. There are ample people going off a vegan diet due to health issues. Its not perfect. Those people are not wrong nor weak. And most probably don't show up in comments due to the negativity people just throw out there. I personally experienced some deficiencies on a plant based diet...some things take years to surface. Another issue is the intake versus what each person can absorb. That is different for each person as well.... If someone is willing to take one on one support...beyond just a medical doctor...looking at their whole life...I feel that is the best barometer for success on a plant based diet....happy person...happy planet...Stay warm.

I think its interesting that one, why are meat eaters always so concerned how non-animal products eater thrive? They always want to cut us down and I have no idea why. 2nd - all these SAD eaters never mention fiber. I watch another WFPB channel too and they have a T-shirt that says I get my protein from plants. Where do you get your fiber? Fiber is integral to a healthy body as well as building healthy mass. I am significantly healthier and stronger since switching over to WFPB 5 yrs ago and I am in my 60s. I have had way too many injuries - significant ones that are no longer as significant because WFPB lowers inflammation. I would say to all those SAD eaters that 1 mind your own business and 2 don’t knock it until you try it. Facts are facts - research and learn before you cast shade. Good health to you all!!!

Thanks for clarifying your position on this...makes sense. I long for a world where "How I get 80 grams of whole plant-food fiber!" or "Crushing 45 whole plant foods this week!" gets the clicks, rather than protein...which although it is important, is a nutrient that everyone who actual eats enough calories is already getting enough of. When those are the topics of passion and continued interest, we may actual see some large scale health improvements.
