Why I'm Proud of My Albinism | Living Differently

Leo is 22 and has albinism, a condition which affects the body's production of the pigment that gives skin, hair and eyes their colour.
Born to black parents, Leo's brother and sister also have albinism. Although he struggled to accept the condition as a child, Leo grew to be proud of his unique looks and has become a model. Leo's high profile career is a source of inspiration to other young people with the condition.

some types of Albinism can increase risks of things like cancer and blindness. It's a physiological condition and is not just about how you look. It affects the division of cells in the body. Its not just skin colour. It is just more noticeable on someone who has features of a black man/woman because typically their skin is meant to be darker. Hayah7 Being Albino and being white are two totally different things. For starters, whites are NOWHERE near as sensitive to the sun as Albinos, I go everyday without sunscreen and have no issues at all. An Albino would. Second of all, people with Albinism usually develop blurred vision really easily, and other optic nerve issues that Europeans don't usually get. Third, white comes in many shades, Albinism means you are much paler than your average German. Whites do develop a type of Melanin, and less of it anyway, but people with Albinism usually have a complete lack of it. Fourth, being white isn't a disease. It is a genetic mutation. All humans regardless of skin color are forms of genetic mutations and have genetic mutations. By that logic, being Native, Asian, Middle Eastern or a Pacific Islander is a "disease" because they are lighter than Africans.

I think it's one of the coolest genetics you can have. I also went to high school with a mixed guy that was light skinned, with freckles and orange hair (redhead).
