Why I'm Rearranging Plants Now (And Why You Should Too)

Happy Autumn! All gardeners say the same thing this time of year. Where did the time go? Now is the time we will get our bulbs planted, perennials divided, and rearranging plants to get ready for the next garden season. This is a great time of year to pull out your photos from the garden season and see where there are gaps you can fill by rearranging plants and dividing things up. It's going to get cooler here soon and it is a great time to be in the garden. Thanks for being here and happy gardening friends!

It’s surprising how warm it’s been this late in WI. We’ve had an over abundance of rain this summer, September drought then 6” of rain and still drought and well over 20 degrees warmer. We will get quite a bit cooler for a day or two and then be in normal 70s-and yes, frost is near.

I’ve never grown gomphrena before but what a display they provide, stunning colours I’m going to try them next year. I don’t tend to divide my perennials until early spring, it’s usually too wet in the autumn for me but if I have a dry spell I’m going to follow your lead. Much better to get them established before winter. I’m like you I really struggle to discard plants I don’t like but I’m getting more ruthless as time goes on, on the compost heap they go 😊

Hello. I think you will like the gomphrena and they are very easy to grow from seed. Another reason to love them. I think I need to take the advice in the comment section and try to find a sunnier, wetter area in the garden for the turtlehead. Otherwise they will end up in the compost..ha ha.

I am always moving seedlings around. Mostly my columbine. I had to smile at you carefully stepping and digging because it seems I am always balancing between plants trying to do something without damaging something else.

Turtlehead in my experience is more of a sun/ part sun plant in my experience at least here in New England - too much shade causes them to stretch, thin, and make them much more susceptible to PM (not good) Not sure why anyone lists this as shade …. this is one of those plants found in places like stream banks, thriving in moist woodland spaces… sun some moisture richer soil…. This is by far the trickiest native I have found to site in our garden

Sue, this is my first year with alliums. I don’t know how I made it so long without them. I got both millennium and serendipity. I am hoping to add tall verbena to my garden next year along with the white Calamint. I ordered Montose White. Which variety do you have? It seems to have done really well.

I just picked up an allium this year Summer Beauty and can’t wait till next year. I have a few allium bulbs, but not the plants everyone seems to love. I’m also looking at verbena! Rose Campion is another. I’m branching out trying new flowers and when I seen Sue had Gomphrena 🤩 it has been my new Favorite annual in a big way.

@@dustyflats3832 I love rose campion too. I’ve had it for years. It comes up in different places but is in no way a heavy seeder, at least for me in Kentucky. The Gomphrena is beautiful too, but I never buy many annuals.

Hi Peggy. I bought my plants from Bluestone Perennials. All it says on the website is " Calamintha Nepeta" and it is labelled as the 2021 Perennial Plant of the Year. I am going to try buying a couple more for the pollinator garden.

Love your videos! 😂😂I spotted the Gomphrena right away! It’s my new Favorite annual🎉 🎉. I have Vegas Lights and wonder if they will have seeds to collect. They are a beautiful low shrub form. How do you handle the forget me not seeds? 😅 I love the flower, but those seeds stick to everything. Not sure how to handle hibiscus either as I noticed seedlings all around. And I also was moving some plants around and then come to a place where annuals or bulbs are at the moment and had to stop. I will finish after frost. I recently caught a sale at a nursery that I had no idea expanded 2 years ago! Where have I been?! Obviously no where😅but I managed to pickup a few perennials and one is Summer Beauty Allium that I’m excited to see as soon as many love the alliums. I’m going for a peach, pink and white theme for statue garden. Discovered a coral bee balm-have you any experience with bee balm? I have a red one and need to corral it 😅. I remember my MIL had one and then it died out, mine is still creeping and a bit nervous. I must be crazy as I got a Balmy Purple one also that is only 12” tall. Trying a Kniphofia/red hot poker and will see if it likes it here as I’ve never had luck with it. When we bought this place it was a sand dune and nothing would grow except sand burs which I thought were extinct from my childhood days-Ugh! And now, over a decade later some things are taking off in a ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ way. 😊it’s an ok thing if I can keep up removing them-catalpa tree, coneflower, brown eyed Susans to name a few. And yet still a few sand burs 🙄.

Hi Sue. I no longer invest in plants that don’t make me happy. I just completed a huge project where I had to dig up two mop head hydrangeas that wasn’t doing well. Dug up & divided my autumn brilliance ferns with fragrance hostas to fill in the gaps. Now I’m super happy. Glad you got to do the same.

Love the white nepeta. Did you grow it from seed? If so, did it bloom the first year. Had good luck with growing Golden Jubiliee hyssop from seed and blooming first year. Another bee magnet!

Hi, my white nepeta 3rd year in is not happy. Ive got many purple and blue nepetas and they work fantastic. Also my white liatris does not perform as well as my purple one. any tips?

Hi and thanks for watching. I have my nepeta planted in an area where the soil drains well and it gets tons of sun. Without knowing your growing conditions I am not able to make any recommendations.

You inspired me to get out in my garden this morning. It's been rainy and damp, and the gnats just attacked me before today. Cooled off and got some time between showers. Pulled out some annuals, dahlias, cut back the black-eyed susans and tall phlox. Hosed off the patio and it made such a difference!

After seeing how well your gomphrena flowers look, I think I will try these from seed for next year,, they're so cute! Do you remember what variety they are? Also, I was wondering how your boxwood blight is doing, they look good on video!

You will love the gomphrena. I bought my seed from Pine Tree seeds from what I recall. You should be able to google "gomphrena seeds" to see what people are offering. Last season I had issues finding a single variety from seed. I am not a fan of seed packs with more than one color in them. That is how come I have those light pink and white flowers mixed in there. I am hoping to grow the deep magenta ones next season. The boxwood moth catepillars came back (as to be expected). Some of the boxwood are looking pretty rough.

I did buy the moth insecticide that you suggested, so I'm ready for them when they arrive. I'm not a fan of mixed color seed packets either, as I have color themed garden beds also. Thank you, I will look up Pine Tree company for the gomphrena seeds.
