Arthur kitchen, your company is only as good as its employees. And that's where the rubber meets the road. I have car shipped around the West Coast on a regular basis and I have found a couple reliable transporters. I stick with them, tip them well. I have had very few problems. On one occasion my new 2016 Shelby GT350R was shipped and the front splitter was cracked and the driver told me about it before the car was even out of the trailer. They had already ordered the part from Ford to replace the broken one. I always ship my cars in enclosed trailers. It service like that keeps me going back to the same company. Customer service is everything!

I watch a LOT of American youtubers (I’m from the uk) and I have seen this problem so much, it truly amazes me as I drive a enclosed transporter over here and the flaws in your system are horrible. Setting the company up is a good idea and I’m surprised no one has done it, if you can get a name out for yourself like you did with the rentals for a quality service that’s ALWAYS on time people will pay over the odds for that service. You wouldn’t need to fill the truck to make a profitable run because there is always going to be some baller that wants his car NOW that will pay the overhead to make it so. Set up a good system and I think your onto a winner

Seriously, got my car shipped a few years ago from Toronto Ontario To Vancouver BC in Canada, about 40 hours of solid driving. I paid over $3,000 to ship the car. It arrived 3 months later, despite their 2 week estimate, and I found out that it sat in Toronto outside for over a month, got loaded onto a Train, then sat in Vancouver (less that 4 hours from my house) for another month and a half until they literally delivered it to my house on a tow truck. I was pissed and horrified, this is a car that I NEVER park outside and am very protective of, I knew shipping it would be a bit more of an adventure than I am usually comfortable letting that car go on outside of my supervision, but this was eye opening. I now only trust ONE guy with my cars, he only has 2 trucks, both are driven by him but he keeps them in different locations for different uses, and he is expensive, but I know my cars are looked after, and if he says 7-10 days to ship it WILL be at my door in 7-10 days, or if it isn't he will be live updating his customers personally over text or phone call, with every detail, and no lies or coverup.

I know exactly what your saying. I have been trying for 2 freaking Weeks to get my car moved 325 miles. I have had shippers give me a price I tell them send me a contract and they email me a blank contract expecting me to sign and give card info. When you refuse to sign a blank or open contract they call you constantly and curse you. They tell you a guaranteed price locked in all inclusive but contract says QUOTE ONLY. Im only trying to get my car moved 325 miles. I cant believe how crooked and sleazy shipping industry is. Truly pathetic.
@davidvanderson941

I brokered for a few years. First, the way to eliminate the problem with payment is have the customer pay my brokerage fee, typically $100/vehicle, on pickup and then the carrier would be paid the remainder of the shipping fee directly from the customer. Also, it took awhile and getting burned a few times, but I developed a list of quality carriers I could count on. The benefit I offered as a broker, was I would answer my phone 24/7 and had a way to contact the drivers for answers on where their vehicle was in the process. The only way to make brokering pay was to develop commercial customers who provided consistent business. Especially by booking full truck loads.

You’re right, it is hard to find reliable auto transporters. I do this as a living and started with my dad when I was around 16. Now I’m 21 and have been loading a 10 car stinger since. The problem is that all these newbies come in and don’t plan ahead. Every time we are making our trips we call and find cars 3 or 4 days in advance. By the time we arrive to our destination and unload we already have another 9-10 cars waiting. We don’t unload then start finding cars. That’s just unprofessional and unreliable like you said for that first customers car that is picked up! We use Central Dispatch almost every trip but if you’re looking to get big in this business, you need to get yourself dedicated runs and contracts with company’s.
@youtubasoarus
@youtubasoarus 6 жыл бұрын
The reason this business doesn't work is for the same reason companies like Pan Am and TWA (airlines) went out of business. The economics are highly dependent upon lining up the cars or people on the same route to load the vessels to capacity (be it truck, ship, train or plane). If that doesn't happen then you have to charge the person who wants their car to go cross country a hell of a lot of money, which then limits the number of customers (ie. who is going to pay 10k+ to ship their car to LA from NY?), which then limits your return which ultimately sinks the business (edit: The Concorde had a similar fate but was glossed over by the accident -- simple economics made it unprofitable). Perhaps a reservation system could help (ie. buffer the loads on a particular date/time/route schedule so they all line up). But that involves dealing with PEOPLE who are reliable and know they want their car somewhere next month instead of NOW. And since most people are poor at planning ahead, everyone will want their car shipped yesterday. Tricky business Rob, but I wish you well. Logistics is a tricky business and putting it all together so it works is something I think the entire industry struggles with. If you can make it work, the method you use would be something the ENTIRE industry would obviously want to know, since it's so broken. Ultimately it's about very critical timing and resource management that requires heaps of technology and people with expert knowledge that are all very expensive. Thus it is all self-limiting due to upfront and ongoing costs and variables like fuel, weather, insurance (ie. claims due to people and weather) and ultimately people.

Thanks dawicked2k8. I hope he doesn't, as I never wish bad things on people. I hope he can sort it out and be profitable, but a brief survey of the industry would show that it's an industry wide problem that billion dollar companies are grappling with every day (from freight to air). For a mom and pop outfit it would be brutal to get the numbers to add up. But you never know, the technology is there, the question is whether the people are there to make the numbers add up.

Nah that's too expensive. Just get a old truck that doesn't have those problems to begin with. Take it to a good mechanic shop and have them go through it top to bottom with a few sets of eyes. If you're doing 25 trips a year, there's no reason for a semi truck to break down. They are pretty bullet proof when taking it slow. If you're doing this as your life profession and running 4 trips a month things are going to break really fast. I've got a relative that does 10 car transport and every part of that truck that could break has broken at some point.

Left because the amount of money paid wasn't worth the hassle - even though it was good compared to other businesses. Not only do you have a lot of responsibility, it is also very nerve-racking (imagine running expensive cars up a ramp to park them 2 inches from each other. I got out of it, and now I am a full-stack web developer.

Hay Rob, I’m a truck driver, own my truck and haul tankers. I never knew that car haulers worked that way until your video, thanks for the education. The one thing conspicuously missing from the information you gave, are the federal rules that cover when we can drive and when we can’t, in other words Elog’s. Elogs the one most significant factor in when you get your cargo. I didn’t read the other comments on this post so I don’t know if someone already said this but it definitely needs to be considered.

Rob, if you want to ensure that your cars are delivered on time then you need to start hiring drivers for "Exclusive Use" or "Expedited Services" meaning the driver will load your cars and ONLY your cars, and deliver them direct to the desired location. It's usually more expensive but worth it. That's what I do for a living. It also helps to hire a team instead of a solo driver if you have a tight deadline. Also, you should look into the new ELD (electronic logging device) mandate that went into effect for ALL commercial vehicles. It's making harder for drivers to meet deadlines.

I've been a truck driver for almost 5 years and one of the first things I learned other than how to drive a semi truck was this industry is bullshit. I've been fortunate enough to only have to deal with Brokers a handful of times seeing as how most of the companies I've worked for have been their own Brokers so they never had the contract out to either brokerages but there have been a few instances where we hauled brokered loads and those were nightmares. Good luck on your future Venture I'm real curious to see what kind of truck you end up going with.

Buddy of mine used to drive 18-wheelers for his own small company. He owned/drove one, and had two drivers driving two other trucks that he owned. He got out of it because of the insane number of government regulations he had to put up with -- and they just kept piling more and more on! It boggles my mind that *anything* ever gets shipped *anywhere* in this country with all the government bullshit involved. Government is ridiculous -- and *so* damned expensive!

Believe it or not they would say mercedes would pay the least and were jackasses and all this other stuff. So you could really tell who didn't give a shit and who cared. 90% of them didn't care at all. They would damage property and drop wherever, whenever the fuk they liked to.

rob I've been hauling fifth wheel campers from Florida to New York and then getting other trailers of all kinds back to Florida its been fun I've always wanted to haul cars but I didn't want to do it for central dispatch. the people I haul the campers for they love me because when i pick it up I take pictures of every inch of the campers so they know how it looks when I pick it up. The only way I would get into car is if I could haul for just 3 or 4 company's that way I could service them the right way I don't like having new customers every time I haul. Thats why i like camper hauling because I only deal with one person and they buy and sale all kinds of trailers so on the way back I either stop at big tex or anderson trailer to pick up what im hauling back

Industry does suck however these Big Rigs aren't cheap to run either. The reason they need to take multiple cars is that between Insurance, travel cost, Truck Payment, Maintenance, etc he/she can't make money off a single car unless you pay a significantly higher premium for it. Lets say I charged $600 just to put the car on the trailer plus .80/mile (I used to charge upwards of $4-4.80mile) to go from NY,NY to LA California. Google maps says 2793 miles so multiply that by .80/mile and your looking at $2,234.40 + $600 your looking at $2834.40 to ship said car. Now lets say fuel (about 1000 miles per tank) its going to take 3 tanks to get their so (at $2.69/gallon and need 200Gallons to fill the truck) your looking at $1614 just in fuel cost alone which just brought your bring home down to $1220.4 before other expenses. Instead of doing that 1 car making a measily $1200 you take multiple and lets say you get 5 more cars going to LA for the same price your looking at $15,390.4 instead so of course taking multiple cars is going to be the way to go and is why many drivers do so. Even if you take shorter loads to get to LA your still making more than taking that 1 single car. Also there are times where like you said the broker will promise you the moon but the logistics won't match what the driver can legally do. Generally your being screwed by the broker in these cases and not the driver who often times takes the blame when there is nothing he could really do.

You won't be in control of any time table, the regulations of the DOT and mandated ELD's will make sure of that. Between break downs and the crazy maintenance requirements of a car hauler, you will be surprised. One recommendation, keep around 100k of capital around for fuel and maintenance... I only have 10 years in car hauling, the "game" as you put it is a career ender for 99% of anybody wanting in...
