@tylercady39853 жыл бұрын
It makes me think of my stupid idea that would never work that I thought of when I first discovered rallies like that. The whole point of the rally is to get from point A to point B as fast as possible with as few tickets/arrests as possible right? So what would happen if you just took a reliable, bone stock sedan or something like that. Average about 100mph, and if the cops catch wind of the rally, you'll theoretically slide right by as the cops focus their attention on the supercars around you.
@BB-zv8tx3 жыл бұрын
@@tylercady3985 that's what a lot of people did tbh. iirc Richard Rawlings did most of the early gumball runs in a pickup.
@ParadigmUnkn0wn3 жыл бұрын
An extended fuel tank and a suspension that would handle the weight probably would've done it. I like his style; just keep going and don't look back. That strategy was only really viable during the early days of COVID thanks to the low traffic, otherwise you're eventually going to get stuck and the cops are gonna catch up. As for the "can't outrun the radio" thing... think about how fast you clear through a state when you're going that fast. Even a helicopter or one of those little Cessna 172s they fly for aerial speed enforcement can't keep up with a car going 160+
@ParadigmUnkn0wn3 жыл бұрын

Always at least 2 Sheriff or police there, also it's one of the only gas stations open super late. He also says the city is poor, but the city he stopped in has more millionaires per capita than KC or STL, because of the disproportionate number of hospitals and universities for the size. I'm only mentioning this to show people there recognize an R8, it's not a little farm town. Most company owned trucks have limiters and/or automatic reporting so the drivers can't go above a set limit. You get two limited trucks with speedos that are quarter a mile per hour out of sync, and you end up with a pair of trucks taking days to pass. All that aside, why is it even an issue for someone that is happy to go 80-100 MPH over the limit? That checks. Blew through there in the early am, like 3-4 am and some of the spots those troopers were nested in were criminally hidden. Talked my way out of them, but those troopers don't play.... They're fairly sharp and I wouldn't take my chances against them. Arkansas troopers have the high speed pit record at around 110mph! That's a kill move, folks. So ya, they don't play...

*_I've always gunned it and never been pulled over. Of course, I'm not racing across the country but usually state to state. For example, I got on the 91 Fwy at the beginning in Gardena, CA, shoot up to 10 Fwy to head to Phoenix, AZ, Keep in mind time is important here if you don't want to run into heavy traffic. I'm doing 120mph from the get-go all the way to Phoenix, AZ stopping only once in Blyth for gas. Not once did I see any police cars until I hit my target city, Phoenix, AZ did I see a cop car coming down the ramp. By then I was done with my run and had a nice cruise to my uncle's home._* *I've only been pulled over once for speeding in my lifetime and that was on my Suzuki GSX-R 1000 when visiting my brother in San Diego. I was almost there from Torrance, CA where I live. I was doing 150mph and the Fwy was dead not one single car or motorcycle on those highways and new overpasses. That might explain how I was easy to spot. The cop was cool and only gave me a ticket for doing about 15 mph over the speed limit instead of taking me to jail.*
@monunyabidness59492 жыл бұрын
I drove (or rode my motorcycle) to Phoenix once a month from LA. For years. There's cops everywhere. You got lucky. The shortest time it took me was 4 hours, from Pasadena. Was really hauling the mail, but you can only go so fast up to Chiriaco Summit when there's lots of semi trucks. Wouldn't do it again in that same lil old Benz. Terrible headlights.

The only problem I would forsee is the road conditions here in the US. I lived in Germany for 3 years and the difference in roads is insane. I have only gotten to about 125mph here and its pretty sketchy. I could do 170+ over there with minimal effort.

I have noticed, that after 20 hours driving or so you will stay awake over 110 mph. Though this was in Germany, so legal but quite a bit winding highway most parts (vs. US straight lines). Slowing down was naturally the hard part.

Can confirm. Needed to get from Munich to Dunkirk to catch the ferry back to England. The Opel Insignia diesel got fantastic economy all through the night. Whenever I felt myself dozing off, I just hit the accelerator. The amount of mental bandwidth required to drive at 140mph, at night, means you're not sleeping. Didn't make the 07:00 am ferry, fatigue got to me. Germany is a big country going north south.

As a former cigar territory manager that covered 4 states, and parts of another the random chitchat calls at night are the key to making 45-60k miles a year of windshield time less stressful. Well that and the cigars. My Man Zev taught me the random calls way. If you smoke cigars in the Carolinas, and go to shops to buy, and not the internet, then you may have met the Phantom Zev, but probably not.
