Having a limited library of music is great. I feel like streaming has made music so disposable. It's all about the latest and greatest. With the iPod, I feel like I sit with my music more. I create a connection to albums that I listen to on repeat. Long live the iPod!

Spotify and Pandora are both fantastic in my experience for their recommendations, but once I know I enjoy an album front to back I'll just buy the CD or FLACs. No-brainer to someone like myself who's appreciative of consistent quality and offline access.

i totally agree with the importance of intentional consumption of music. i use spotify out of convenience, but i never touch any of its playlists or other bullshit, only albums i’ve curated for myself out of online forums and conversations with like minded music heads. i’d love having an ipod!

Def not alone. I was using my 6.5 from 2008-2020 when my old hard drive started to fail, the battery swelled and died. Unfortunately, while messing around with it swapping stuff, I broke the battery cable connector from the motherboard. I hopped on eBay and bought as busted up 7th gen which I case swapped and flash modded up to 256gb, new battery. Absolutely love the thing, its amazing to use and disconnect with still in 2024.

@@uknowme1811CDs are the best, I feel like people hate on them just because they are old. I rip them to .wav or whatever Apple's lossless thing is and listen to them with VLC on my phone. Noticably higher quality than stuff like KZbin. They're dirt cheap too and will last forever if cared for at all. Also CDs are just superior for music in cars, you can make an MP3 CD and have tons of songs on a single disc, or you can have high quality audio CDs and swap between them very simply even while driving, requiring much less interaction (and as such, distraction from the road).

You articulated my feelings exactly! I have the same model - originally a 160gb also. Ultimately the drive crashed, and it sat in its original box in a drawer for years. My sentimental attachment was too strong to let it go, and my music, which is about nearly 600 volumes - vinyl, CD and some cassettes, across multiple genres, is one of my most treasured belongings. About two years ago, I invested in "resurrecting" my device, sending it out to have the crashed hard drive replaced with an SSD - and also a new battery. I noticed it is now a bit lighter in weight. I still keep it preserved in the same shell case I used back in the day, and added a Bluetooth adapter that truly rocks. And the audio quality of the later generation iPods is STILL among the best even by today's standards. My generation grew up building our own libraries of music - and the idea of perpetually "renting" has never appealed to me. I've never used Spotify, but I do have an Amazon Music subscription that supplements, rather than replaces, my own library. And I still enjoy the notion of digitizing vinyl albums and listening via iPod, on my workstation, or even from a burned CD - Dark Side of the Moon with the right pops and clicks cannot be beat.

I still use my 160 GB iPod Classic which I bought used about 15 years ago from an eBay seller and I transferred about a thousand of my CD's to it for ease of portability (while still keeping my vast CD collection, record collection, and movie collection on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K). It's perfect and I love its rotary dial button to rapidly sift through albums or videos and it's shocking to me how Apple has not created 160 GB iPhones or iPads (two steps forward and three steps backward in terms of its products), so iPods still have their benefits. :)

I so highly recommend you upgrade to flash storage down the line. Or at least make it your first upgrade when you start because it provides the following benefits. It makes the device less fragile since it originally has a spinning drive, It decreases the weight, reduces load time as well as gives the device an extra pep in its step (it'll run quite smoother), and finally it gives you additional battery life.

If Apple ever considered bringing back the Ipod Classic, only things I'd want them to change is, increase the battery, possibility to increase storage space (which is a stretch bc its Apple) and data transfer/charging with USB-C, and the addition of bluetooth(but leave the headphone jack, that's it like, leave the design and controls alone, I guess the wheel could be all touch but if it wasn't I'd still be happy with that. But I love my ipod rn and have been carrying it more with me, and my phone still on me, sure it's a little more bulk but the feeling of pulling it out and playing music through it

Love the video! I actually do a hybrid method; I still have Spotify (since a family member pays for it) and use it for discovery, but when I find music I truly enjoy I will purchase it and load it up onto my iPod (for offline times) and my iPhone 13 mini. I find that combo to be a super flexible, sweet spot for music consumption. The 13 mini is my ideal smartphone because the size really emphasizes how much of a tool it is, rather than a distraction, but offers tons of power when needed. What I’ve come to enjoy as well, is going to bed about 30 min before I plan to sleep, putting in some good quality earbuds, and just listening to my music while playing an easy, mindless solitaire game (I’m partial to FlipFlop Solitaire - the two suit game) for that time. It’s a dedicated time to listen to music, relax, and prepare for bed all in one.

As more and more stream options comes out, your streaming bills gets higher....then it gets the time to choose what to pay to consume...and Spotify is not an cool option to keep paying for me (as I prefer pay for KZbin Premium nowadays and have more benefits on it). 😎

I’m doing the same thing but with a Lumia 800, only for the fact that I can use Bluetooth earbuds with that, which are much more convenient for me. Apart from that, the 800 too is a great small device - being a smartphone it means that it still has all the basic functionalities of Windows Phone 7.x, but I never use them, I always just power it in and go straight to Zune. And well, with the Zune software it’s the same - its syncing is automatic with the pc, and is far faster and far more reliable than MTP. It has 16GB, I have some photos on it together with I think around 800 songs, and I skip so many of them still! It’s always my favourite device to play music because I don’t get distracted as you said, plus I don’t have ads, I can choose whatever I want and have a better shuffle feature (maybe like, just on a set of songs), and I don’t have to use internet (since when I travel it’s essential - listening online while on a train where internet works bad isn’t a great thing).

I recently dug out my old iPod Nano 3rd gen at 8GB. Considering I have over 117 GB of music, choosing the all-killer-no-filler essentials presented a challenge but in the end, it was a very fun challenge! I hit shuffle and it's all amazing. I love streaming services for the ability to discover music, but over time my collection has become extremely cluttered. I'm working my way up in storage size slowly and I think it'll be a fun project to keep only the music I truly love. The space limitation of 8GB means "Only 1,000" songs - which is absurd when you think about it because that's stilll.... a LOT of songs. It's crazy how practically unlimited nature of streaming has kind of warped that perception. Anyway, enough rambling. I too love the iPod!

I love the idea of owning my stuff again. There are some songs I would be devastated if I couldn't listen to for some reason, so I've been slowly gathering CDs and MP3s. Heck, I even found the Tarzan soundtrack at a thrift store, which is really cool to me. I do get some from Amazon when I have digital credit (I should really stop shopping there) and the MP3s there sound good to me, but I can't really tell if they're quality. But yeah, I don't want to lose my favorite media. I don't have a lot of favorites, so it should be easy to keep the physical clutter low. Except for books. Man, I love too many books xD

Having Spotify helped me find some really good artist over time. But at the same time, we don't need all that music all at once. Its like you said. Growing up with my iPod, id get so excited to download my favorite songs & listen to them as much as I wanted. Ive definitely took it for granted. So I'm deleting Spotify & buying my music from iTunes, like the good old days!

I personally use my Apple Watch as my main music device with all my music that I own. The only exception is at work then I use my phone because I can’t use ear buds and use my speaker on my phone , which again is still all music that I own. It’s so nice knowing no matter what my music will have 100% uptime and will never be taken away.

Do you only use the built in Apple Music app on the watch for your own music? I had to stop using it because Apple consistently rescinding access to my own music (not available in this region). Tried every fix. Nothing works. Even when it temporarily does they go back to taking away the ability to play my own music, with or without Apple Music cloud backup in play. It’s endlessly frustrating because i really like the idea of just using my Apple Watch for music. But it’s been such a turn off I’m considering selling it because I don’t want to even wear it at this point. Apple ruined their music app for me. I’ve started searching for alternatives I’m sick of pushing this boulder up a hill for no reason. Plexamp seems okay. Still haven’t found the best high quality local music player. I’m so disenchanted by Apple at this point. Legitimately thinking about moving on from their modern products.

I haven't ever had paid music subscriptions, I do have a fairly large almost 5,000 song iTunes music collection some of which came originally from sources i.e. CD's that I no longer have access to. Way back when I had an iPod Classic I forget what happened to it honestly & while yes I sort of regret no longer having it, I totally understand, agree & the not getting distracted, due to my being physically disabled I wouldn't be able to physically mod an iPod Classic with new batteries etc. as needed & I listen to music a lot as I would probably guess is obvious by my library size. I am getting my first ever MacBook & I have wireless headphones & earbuds so I can listen that way, but I like you miss the days of simplicity.

My new approach this year after years of only using Spotify is a sort of hybrid way. If there are any albums I want to specifically own then I will buy the physical version and rip it. Then every year buy the top 10 tracks from my Spotify Wrapped so I always have those tracks I quite obviously loved so much.

Still using my 120Gb & 160Gb Classics around home and in the car, all the time. The 6G 120 needs a new battery but the 7G 160 is still going strong. What surprised me was my new car even recognised the 10+yr old iPods. Best device ever. Pity it was discontinued.

Thank you for sharing your reasons why you still use your iPod!! ❤ I owned an iPod 5 for a few years when it came out. Unfortunately I sold it after I got my first iPhone (3GS). But last year I had the same reasons as you and bought me an iPod 7 (the same you have) and I am so happy with it! It makes me also feel younger 😊 Regards from Germany! Sebastian

I can say not too long I got me a modern version rechargeable walk man and a collection of CDs that I found in a demolition job I did && some I bought. Something about owning ya media and not streaming feels so authentic because like u said the sound is amazing. I need to buy an iPod though because I love its UI & time to collect music like I did as a younging.

Still using my iPod Classic! It's plugged into its dock and into my home stereo system - providing jukebox music around our house. I reload it from my iTunes/Music collection (~91K songs - most at 320 kbps) every once in a while to randomly load different content - so the iPod always has >15K songs on it.

I have my 80GB iPod classic that I got as a Christmas present way back in 2007. The battery isn't what it used to be, and it's on my mom's iTunes account so the collection of media on there is somewhat static. When lockdowns started and I couldn't go to a gym, I bought a Fiio M6 to be a portable media player I could use separate from my phone.

This is how I am increasing my collection and also what you are doing I loved it and support it as well. As you said that people thought of you as mad, I also do realate with this now. But its the best way to not to distract while listening 🎧 music ❤

My current mobile music playing setup involves two different devices. I have an iPhone X that basically has no cellular access (no SIM and put in Airplane Mode). It has WiFi and I have used it as a sort-of mini tablet for several years. I also use it as a music player and it is currently my main music player using ripped and downloaded tracks of several types. I try to rip to FLAC, but also have a good amount of AAC and MP3 and even a few WMA tracks from the old days before I learned the difference. I like this device for music as it can have WiFi turned off and become essentially an iPod Touch without an active network connection. Having bluetooth available is definitely also an advantage for situations where this is required, although I normally use wired headphones. I also like that this device can play FLAC and has generally better sound quality than my other device. My other device is an old Zune 30 (first gen) from 2006. It is on its' original hard drive, but has had a battery replacement. The advantage with this device is absolutely no network access and absolutely no distractions from music. It also has a built-in headphone jack, so that is very nice. It has several distinctive disadvantages. The most significant is that it only plays MP3 and WMA files, plus WMV video files, so this leaves out any option for lossless audio. This reduces sound quality by a noticeable amount, but not unbearable. Another major disadvantage is the low capacity battery. This battery is also having to power an HDD, so that shortens its' power cycle even more. This could be improved by adding a larger battery. I have considered doing this, but harder to justify with another, and arguably better, music player option available. It also has the fun nostalgia factor, like iPods.

Its funny, I was on the anything but ipod train for the longest. I didn't want to be tied to the itunes program as I preferred simple drag and drop from my desktop. After cd players and cassette players, I got an old Coby Mp3 player. It was 20GB but not in color. It served me well tho. I became so good at navigating it, that I continued to use it a few months even when the screen faded and could no longer be seen. Then I moved onto the Creative Zen Vision M. 30GB music and videos. It was great then it took a tumble down the Farley Post Office steps here in NYC. Hardrive wrecked. From there I moved into the Ipod Classic, Nano, Touch wave via ebay. I even have a dedicated 8 or 16GB touch for workouts. Right now my 32 GB touch(4th gen) is my primary music device on my commute. I am looking into getting a higher storage Ipod touch but want to find a way to transfer from 1 ipod to another. I thought I was the last holdover of the mp3 gen. I just personally don't want to bog down the phone storage w music and I want to be able to save battery life.

The classic is by far the best way to listen to music. A perfect tool dedicated to music and music only. Though they are really expensive now and break pretty easy too. You know you re done when you hear the hard drive making some afxtwin sounds by itself. After a few years of trying out spotify I had to go back to mp3 and the sandisk is really amazing, as said the interface is not the best but you get use to it. The battery power is great and it's so small, almost impossible to break too.

I grew up in the early 2000s but wasn't really exposed to music at all, but recently I started collecting old stuff. I have a VCR and a Sony stereo in my room, and I have burned a few CDs that I keep in my stereo or my car. I'm into high end headphones, and I would get a MP3 player, but they don't have enough power for my headphones, so it just feels like a waste. I have a portable amp, but it requires USB input, so my phone or computer will work with it.

I've had cheap and small player with 4 gigs of memory in my childhood and always had a problem with uploading new songs (what old songs I need to delete to fit in 4 gigs??). Streaming apps tried to own me with my smartphone, but I bought... Zune 80 in 2019. I love this thing SO much, it's so brutal and well-designed. I barely reached 60 gigs of it's 80. I use it every time when I go outside or travel, it helps to forget about phone and internet at least for several hours. But repairability and 3rd-party support so much worse, makes me feel that this device will reach the point of no return and became just a beautiful piece of steel, plastic and microchips. So I bought iPod 5.5 80 gig. I amazed of his repairability and modding! So now Zune can have a rest.

Plus it also sounds better having a device directly plugged into your system instead of bluetooth where you will lose audio quality through compression.

Hi Spencer, no! You’re not crazy at all because I still have my iPod Classic too and I love it. I totally agree with the 7 things you said about it and still use mine to this day. It’s a shame that a) the battery life on it has gone down a lot and now I can’t use it with headphones as it does t last long and b) I used to be able to play it in my previous car, however in my new car due to Apple CarPlay I’m no longer able to do so as the software doesn’t recognise it at all. So the only way I can properly listen to the content on it is to play it through iTunes or dock it on one of my DAB radios which still has an iPod dock.

If you intend to get a classic, spring for a 5th/5.5th/7th gen if you intend to mod or repair it. These models allow you to install up to 2tb of flash storage through iflash quad sd adapter boards, and in doing so, make a LOT more room for much bigger batteries. If you have a 6th gen, it can only be modded with up to 128gb of storage unless you install rockbox, which doesnt have that limit. Both really simply mods that take 10 mins to an hour depending on your skill levels with general hardware mods. Hardest part is opening the device. All the connections are done through ribbon cables. I have two classics modded with 1tb each, and custom made hand soldered 4000mAh cell phone batteries, and they each dualboot rockbox/OFW. By doing this, i can get past the itunes database/tracklist limit of 20-30-40-50k tracks depending on model/ram. All of my 500gb/~50k music tracks are on rockbox, and all 12k show/movie/audiobooks are on the ofw. Really convenient for carrying around my entire media library :)
