We must be on the same wavelength. My current kit is the 1dx ii, 16-35L 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and a sigma 35 1.4. The 35 is my newest and lately doing event photography I've been going to it over the 16-35L 2.8 which has me considering switching over to the f4 version to put some money toward a sigma 50 or the Canon 24-70L. Doing both film and video this is an ideal lot.

Sounds like you have the Peter McKinnon itch to me. The thing that sucks about Canon it that those focus points are only bunched up in the center, where as Sony they are extended almost completely out through the whole frame and makes a big difference in the rule of 1/3's.

I do like and appreciate his work a whole lot. But the 1dx mkii has been on my radar longer than Pete has been on KZbin. haha. I understand what you're saying about the focus points, but on the 1dx mkii they actually aren't solely center weighted and I still think it's arguably the best Auto Focus system on the market. Definitely, Love me some Pete and Sean. I'm actually a member of Sean's Video Ranking Academy and his training courses are one of the biggest reason my channel has grown the way it has. I skipped the 6d mkii because 120fps is SO crucial to my broll I just couldn't give it up. And I still love the option to shoot interviews in 4k so I can crop in and create a second angle to make edits easier.

I am currently looking to purchasing two Canon 80Ds and Panasonic GH5 and GH5s and possibly the GH4 also the Nikon D750. All the above mentioned cameras have headphone Jack. I am currently using the Nikon D5500 for my street photography. Which is OK for filming. As it has a flat profile. Keep doing what you do. Looking to watch more off your work.

Great video Timothy. Thanks for all the info. Question: why the 16-35 2.8 with no IS vs the 4.0 that has IS. I see alot of CCs going with that lens and wondering if it's just for the 2.8? The 2.8 gives MUCH better low light performance and depth of field than the f4. To me, that's way more important the IS. That sigma is a great lens and I own it for my micro four thirds GH5, but it doesn't work on Full frame cameras lie the 1dx mark ii. Although a Canon mount, it vignettes hard all the way through to 35. So whatever you shoot with it will have to be cropped significantly in post.

Timothy Sunday makes perfect sense. So if I'm running an Canon 80D crop body it might be smarter and cost easier on my wallet to go with the sigma vs the canon 2.8. NOT go with the canon 16-35 4.0. And later down the road when I go full frame opt for the canon 16-35 2.8?

Thanks for the sub. On my camera it's natural. To me, natural and faithful are the two color profiles on Canon that work the best for me.

I still love the GH5, no doubt. It has served me incredibly well. It just fit my workflow as well as this Canon does. I've heard AMAZING things about the Riii. Don't think you can go wrong with either one. If AF is important though...that r3 is the winner. Timothy Sunday Ah. Just curious. That's easily fixed in post with one click. While I'd love to have a 1DX II, I'm going with the R3. Coming from Nikon and all the heavy glass.. I've appreciated how light my GH5 setup has been. Kind of an in between with the Sony..I guess.

One-click is not my experience. Haha. I spent a TON of time in Color grading the footage. And when filming myself, you'll notice my previous videos always have moments of soft focus because the AF system drifts and that can't be fixed in post. The R3 is an awesome camera especially if you want a lighter setup. Have you checked out the 6d mark ii?

Timothy Sunday The GH5 broke me of using auto focus, especially when stationary in front of the camera. Lol. If you shoot the same settings, why couldn't you just create your own lut that corrects the color to suit you? As far as Canon is concerned.. The 1DX with the motion Jpg stuff is a pass for me. The 6D is only 1080 and after shooting open gate (5K acrossl).. and having that luxury to crop in post, I could never go back to shooting anything in 1080P. I'm hoping the next iteration of the 1D will fix some of it's drawbacks and if so, I'll likely buy one and use it for 5 years. Until then? I'm getting an R3.. as soon as I find a buyer for this Panasonic gear.

Totally get you. I'm not in a controlled environment for most of my non-youtube content. Constantly changing from outstide to inside, sunny, to cloudy, etc. I could never just slap a lut on my whole GH5 edit and call it quits. I had to go into every clip and adjust exposure and color correct. Mostly because everything was run and gun so I didn't always have time to nail the perfect settings. I think the next version of the 1dx will be killer for sure. I do love the 4k on it as well and love the option to crop in post. That's such a huge deal to me as well! I'm sure you will absolutely love that R3 and it will serve you well for sure! It's a great camera!!!

I bought a gh5 and used it the first time this weekend for a wedding. I've always been loyal to canon, my c100ii is hands down my favorite camera ever. I was definitely impressed with the gh5 and the ibis was insane but the colors, the menu system (switching back and forth throughout the day on my two canons and the gh5 I was getting confused a lot haha!) and AF makes me watch to buy the 5dIV. I rented a few times and the AF and colors are just hands down the best for me. But again everyone has different needs and likes! Enjoyed the video, thanks!

Audio quality is awesome. :) Agree the af of the 1 DX is great. Also the sensor but for me also the low light sensibility isn't that much better than the Gh5. It's just one stop maximum for Gh5 is 3200 everything above just with denoiser and 1dx is 6400 ... Also the details in 4k in the Gh5 are better but totally agree in terms of colors and usability in taking photos as well.

Sounds like we have very similar tastes. I used the Neat video plugin for the noise on the GH5. But that plugin KILLED the editing process and render time for me on the 4K GH5 footage and I have a late 2016 MacBook Pro maxed. So I rarely used the plugin which left me with noisy footage in lower light.

I agree with the Canon colors. I bought a GH5 and then I kinda got fed up with always trying to make skin tones look decent then got a 5D4 with their own set of lenses. Now, I just don't seem to want to take the GH5 out for anything. I invested in all the best native prime lenses. Now, I'm really tempted to sell off my m43 equipment which cost me a little more than 8K which should be enough for a 1DX2 body, but the 1DX2 is not perfect. It still has a 1.3x 4k crop, no C-Log (my 5D4 is Canon Log enabled). It's a bigger body than I would like to work with. I think I'll wait for a 5D5 or a Canon full frame mirrorless, or maybe even a 1DX3. I can wait. If you're wondering why not stick with the 5D4 which has descent 1080p but the 4k is unusable because of the rolling shutter. I love taking pictures with it though.

But you were behind the camera for the "Micro Four Thirds Lenses" video; you could have shot it at 24fps and use manual focus. Not trolling, I really enjoyed that video. I myself like to use different frame rates depending on the content and target media.

Timothy, the Sigma glass is incredible but it will not render the “Canon Color”! They are sharp and fast but much cooler in tone. I have a 5D Mk IV, Canon C200, GH5s and Canon Cine Lenses and Robinson Xeen. Nothing beats the Canon glass for skin tone. I rented the Sigma 18-35 Cine lens for an interview, set it up and could not use it because the skin tones were not nearly as pleasant as the Canon. Great review. Thank you!

Cool vid. Canon for stills all day for me. Canon DSLR for video is really lacking and their MJPEG is complete trash. I don't like that Canon wants to bully people into the cine line. I love my GH5 and go manual focus but there are times that auto is needed especially run and gun and there in is the challenge with the GH5.

For sure. Totally get where you're coming from. I gotta say though, the 1080 codec for video Canon is nailing. But then again, I never needed or used the crazy bitrate capabiliteis of what the GH5 did either. For KZbin videos and the fact that 95% of the content I make is for social medias or brands to host online, I think the Canon video does a phenominal job and I'm already seeing a huge improvement in my workflow from it. But you know how it is, no one camera is perfect for everyone. It's not about the camera you have, but rather the content you can create. Thanks for watching, Chris. Totally agree with you for KZbin needs and I think that's where many people lose sight of what is best. As a corporate/commercial shooter my needs are very different. I know many KZbinrs that love the 6D mkii. Dual pixel is awesome but for me I would never use that camera for several reasons but for others it fits the bill nicely. All goes back to needs. Just switched from Canon to Lumix. Image stabilization is way better in The Gh5. Even with IS and a monopod my Canon footage would sometimes look shaky. I felt it was distracting the audience from the story. Just an opinion

For sure can be. I shoot mostly in 120fps for broll when I'm not on sticks so the shake isn't noticeable. But I'm also looking at getting a Ronin or another gimbal to smooth out footage as well.

Nope.. lol my GoPro 7 can shoot 240 FP in 1080 that means my GoPro is cinema camera. No.. it is that action camera can shoot 240 in slow motion. GH5 made for video work. Like I say your canon 1dx mark ii made for still that can shoot video.

Filmmakers don't use AF. All a simple vlogger needs is a "camcorder." You can even use your iPhone.

thanks for the comment. I beg to differ. It's 2018, nearly 2019. Filmmakers use AF. Especially run and gun shooters like myself. There's a time and place for both MF and AF.

You are confusing filmmakers with videographers. Not to sound like a snob. "Filmic shots' require full control of the camera. Videographers are better with a Canon XH A1 or similar camcorder. Given the capabilities already in the GH5, to also expect camcorder focus performance might be asking too much.
