@qkatie- this video brought me to tears. I am a second generation italian american on my Dad's side. I've always wanted dual citizenship but the paperwork from my grandparents is figuratively "held hostage" by my oldest cousin who took them from my parent's home upon my father's passing. This video means and has taught me so much. I can begin this journey. Thank you so much.

Driving through the hilly countryside all my grandmother’s stories about her childhood and home came to life. Thank you grandma for your rich stories and taking time to tell them to me.

Congrats on moving to the Puglia region! I am an American and I too lived in Puglia 40 years ago when I was in the USAF. I lived in the region near Brindisi in a town called San Vito. Living in Italy gets under your skin. It's an incredible experience. The people, the food, the culture, the pace of life... I spent 2 years there and the memories are still fresh. I often feel "homesick" for it. I hope that you enjoy every moment!

I'm an American who has spend a lot of time in Italy (married to a Campano from near Salerno) and Puglia is THE BEST. Such a beautiful region. I've been to Trani (gorgeous) but spent more time further south in the Salento. I hope you get to go to Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli, Santa Maria di Leuca - everything. It's all breathtaking. Delicious food, wonderful beaches, great weather, relatively few American tourists, and friendly people. The Pugliese dialect is amazing, and in some towns the dialect is even based on ancient Greek!

I'm glad that you didn't take seriously the bile coming from some Northern Italians. Jerks are jerks at all latitudes, and the north/south divide is strongly felt in Italy. That being said, as a northerner myself I would suggest you to try and spend some time exploring the North too (when the times will allow it). It passes as the serious, kinda boring, no nonsense, workaholic part of the country, but there are many amazing places, especially smaller towns, and the "feel" of the country is quite different from the south, yet equally charming. You will see. You might even experience a mild cultural shock, after being used to life in Trani. But a good one!

about Tursi (quirky moment!) Here in Genoa there is a palace called "Tursi Palace" because a former owner was the aristocratic family Doria. A member of the family was awarded in the XVI centrury by the Spanish Emperor whit noble titles with included the fief of Tursi. This is the reason for the name of the palace. The family owned Tursi until XVIII century (we have to admit: it seems they weren't some of the best south feud owners ...) Now "Palazzo Tursi" hosts the city council, Comune offices, a local police station and a museum.

"strambo" for quirky is kind of correct, but also I am not 100% sold on it. It does indeed mean quirky, but with a VERY minor negative meaning. It originally means "bendy", referring to legs, or the kind of uncertain walk you'd get if your legs are bendy :P Strambo to me conjures the image of the weirdo on the subway or at the bar that is innocuous, but out of the blue starts telling random strangers about his life and all of a sudden comes up with "and of course I've been abducted by aliens when i was 12." Alternatives could be eccentrico/eccentrici (eccentric), stravagante/stravaganti (extravagant; I actually think this might be a good one), bizzarrro/bizzarri (weird, odd)

Ciao Katie, just saw your KZbin video for the first time this morning. GREAT!! I am an American, from Seattle, living in Le Marche. A small village called Loro Piceno. I do not have ANY Italian blood, so don't have an option for dual citizenship. However, there are opportunities to live in Italy as a Permanent Resident. (Visit the Italian Consulate Webpage in the States for requirements) . I have been asked many times "why Loro Piceno, why Le Marche and why Italy"????? I have traveled to Italy for 25 years. I knew, when I decided to retire at an early age, that I wanted to move to Italy and live the rest of my life. The first time I set foot in Italy, I felt like I was HOME. In my heart I feel Italian. There are a lot of challenges moving here to become a resident. it's not easy, but it can be done and totally worth all the effort. Perhaps you might entertain doing a video about coming here to become a RESIDENT in lieu of citizenship. Happy to help......take care and keep making these videos!!

I was surprised to discover that you are American! Your demeanor and attitude somehow led me to believe you were Canadian. Can't quite put my finger on the why, though. Anyways-- spero l'Italia ti tratti bene.

Buona fortuna!!!

There's a great debate here about italian citizenship at the moment. Second generation immigrants born and raised in Italy or brought here when they were babies can't have our citizenship until they turn 18 having always lived here, speaking italian as their mother tongue, etc. So strange that a foreigner can get an Italian citizenship if she/he has an italian great grandfather but can't even speak our language. Practically, tourists with an italian ancestor they never met, can come here for the first time and get a citizenship in 4 years and kids who studied in our schools for all their life are still considered strangers. Obviously something's not adding up and we should take a look into it. It's outdated and sexist too that a paternal lineage is more worty than a maternal one even if it dates back 150 years

No one will blame you for storing the eggs in the fridge. Most of us do it too. It's not necessary, but it's convenient.

Watching how passionate you are about Italy and its culture and food, is amazing. Especially considering how you jumped from one big city to another for then landing to the little Trani ^^ I'm from Milano (Lombardia) but I was born and raised in Reggio Calabria (Calabria). Since you're that near, I highly suggest you to visit Basilicata (Matera and Maratea are beautiful) as well as Calabria, which hosts an IMMENSE variety of nature. For example, the Tirrenica coast is deeply differnet from the Jonica coast (like Greek vs Californian beaches); as well as mountains, there's Sila, Aspromonte and Pollino (shared with Basilicata). You could spend days losing yourself among lakes, caves and falls. Enjoy your life in Italy :)

So sorry you got hate from northern Italians (c'mon guys? Really?). I'm from northern Italy and am now living abroad and also (as many other northern Italians) know the peninsula good enough to recognize that many many things are just ITALIAN and of course you have focaccia and taralli and whatever but you are just savouring Italian life style which we italians all cherish so so much. So I think everything else is simply childish. Don't listen to it. Hugs and love from Padova turned Austrian :) keep coming the nice videos :)
