I grew up in Vancouver, lived in Edmonton for 2.5 years, and now live in southern Ontario. Pros of living in Edmonton (or AB province in general): - one of the cheapest housing market in Canada. - over 1 million in population with a variety of cultural food and restaurants (yes, there are multiple T&Ts!). - wages are general higher for the same position. - no PST (nor crazy HST!). - much cheaper city to raise a family and buy a home. - as cold as Edmonton is, it is also the sunniest city in Canada (lots of sun shines). - Edmonton is an ideal place to summer and winter elsewhere outside of Canada. You can buy a decent apartment condo for less than $250K. Spend 6 months May - October in Edmonton, and then the rest of time in Asia. You spend 6 months in Canada to keep your health care and benefit status, and spend the rest of your time elsewhere to visit family and enjoy warm weather/food! Now the Cons: - it is a very cold city with a very long winter (usually snow from Nov to possibly early May). - during the winter, you constantly deal with muddy streets and parking lot due to snow melting (very messy); many residential roads become single lane due to snow piling on both sides--making commuting frustrating sometimes. - there is not much to do outside of Edmonton unless are want to drive 2.5 hours west to Jasper or 3 hours south to Calgary. - grocery cost is actually more expensive in Alberta in general due to transportation cost. - although there are Asian restaurants, the quality can't be compared to the ones in Vancouver and Toronto areas. - you are far away from mountains and oceans! I would say if you have a family with smaller children, Edmonton is an ideal place to raise them due to affordability. But if you are single (or just a couple) and have some money, then you are much better off in the west coast or Greater Toronto Area.

I love your communication skills and process thoughts! I admire your courage in uprooting your life in Sg (a country I would like to go back to but my life circumstances just doesn't fit into) and starting anew. We lived in Toronto for a start (4 years) then finally moved here in Edmonton (7 years now) after all the trial and errors and experiences in TO.

@@febbylyan right, we're okay for now. It's not easy moving when kids are schooling and where we are right now works for our current situation. When kids are done schooling and retirement comes, maybe that's going to be a another chapter ;) More power to your channel!

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m inspired by your choices ❤ I was laid off twice in Canada, and that made me question my purpose. My story is so similar to yours, but in the opposite direction. I’m planning to pursue law in NUS. You are so correct, what country is better for someone may not be an option for someone. I have lived 8yrs of my life in Canada from international student to a PR, but now I just don’t see myself living here anymore. It must have been the vice versa for you. Hope Canada treats you well and you build a lifetime of memories. Also, I live in Edmonton 😅

Nice one Febby , but it would be nice to know more about you - such as did you marry a Canadian man etc - thanks . BTW speaking of cold, years ago i was in Montreal and the power lines froze and snapped so a big locomotive train was parked in the city - it was the coldest i have ever felt !!

I must ask a serious question as I’m not too “bright”. Singapore is known as a city/state. Is there such a thing as a “true” Singaporean? Or, is it understood that the citizens are transplants from other main Asian countries?

umm this is a tricky but good question! I'd say historically, probably not - since the main ethnicities are chinese, indian and malay, so they were descended from their ancestors who had come the country way back when

Edmonton has one of the best public education systems in the world, if you have kids it's a good choice for that reason. If you don't, it's better to choose a lower tax country

I know one KZbinr from Indonesia who is very famous and lives in Edmonton as well - @nikmatulrosidah. She’s been posting a lot about everyday living in Edmonton. Anyway, I can’t imagine how hard and costly it is to live in Canada compared to Singapore. I’ve been visiting Singapore a lot but have never been to Canada. Good luck Febby😊😊
