I came to Mexico City for similar reasons. It's cheaper, Mexicans are much more family oriented than Americans, in the US it's all me, me, but I look different, my Spanish is good, but as soon as I open my mouth people know I'm not from here.

your views are different because you are a foreigner, your dollar in the country goes a long way and you are treated by the locals differently. if you are a local, they are probably experiencing what you experienced in los angeles.
