Why I own both Nikon Z9 & Nikon D5 flagships

The tale of 2 flagships from different eras. Why I use both the Nikon Z9 and Nikon D5 in 2024. These 2 cameras are both Nikon flagships but both are so different in many ways. I own and use both and here I will tell you why.

I purchased my first Nikon back in the 70s - a Nikon FM. Currently, I own a D800, D810, and my beloved three D850s (each with Nikon vertical grips and RRS L-brackets). I purchase two backup D850s in the event that I ever wear out my first D850 - because I love the D850 and own 16 of the very best Zeiss and gold-ring Nikkor lenses for these DLSRs. However, last fall I purchased a medium format Hasselblad X1D II with their Hasselblad 80mm f/1.9 and their 45mm lenses. I now am also a fan now for my tripod mounted Hasselblad for deliberate, composed portraits and landscapes.

Nice nice. The D850 for me was great but I had a few and dropped them, they started having back focusing issues after that. For me I had bad luck with those. total user error. My D800 never had a focus issue. Still have that camera. ahh nice hassi digital. I have my eyes on the X2D sometine in the future. lets see . Thanks for sharing Randy.

My intent also was to purchase the X2D, but when I saw that Hasselblad was offering for just two weeks their X1D II packaged with their 45p lens for $4,100, I could not pass that deal up. I still plan to also purchase the X2D this year.@@Vahagraphy

I saw a lot of Canon cameras but I must say I was really excited to see a Z9 or two and some higher end Nikon lenses at the super bowl. In fact after the game I was talking on the phone to a friend of mine who was also watching it and I said Hey you see that photographer right there? He's got the same camera I do

I use both the Z9 and the D5 equally in my motorsport photography workflow. I am very happy with this combo.

Thank you for the video. After careful analyses, I've decided to stick to DSLRs and never go mirrorless. Because, my DSLRs can do whatever I want. I'm Canon user and a hobbyist photographer. Not into videos so, couldn’t care less about that option.

@@Vahagraphy I'm sure that will be a great camera. I'm 100% old school. Now looking for a Canon AE-1 film SLR which I know is a supreme piece of imaging equipment. Same time, hunting for a Nikon D200 with CCD sensor. That sensor produces lovely accurate colors straight out of the camera.

Hello Vahagraphy, Yes the Nikon 85mm f1.2 is one amazing bit of glass. I love the one I have. That said all the Nikon Z mount glass is just supper. The one I am just blown away with is the 600mm f6.3 only threee or four weeks now and it has been pared with my Z9 all the time. Next week going to go out and try it with my Z8 after the Nikon supper firmware up date 2.00. So good to see you (as so one would say).

:) hehe love the comment at the end. Likewise my friend. 85 1.2 is the best 85 Ive ever owned. EVER. and Ive used even the Canon versions EF I and II L lenses. So if you had to choose. would you go with the 600 PF Z or a mont 600 f4 FL. ? with FTZ. Im soon to be in the market for a long lens. and Im thinking should I just go with the one you have or wait for a good 400 Z TC. I know the price is night and day. I sold both my FL lenses and G 400 2.8. I regret selling the 600 FL. Loved that lens. I think im just going to buy another FL and just call it. We will see. Who knows maybe I just bight the bullet and my the 600 TC or another option is the 800 PF Z but I think that would be too limiting because its 800mm all the time.

I ended up selling quite a few of my F mount lenses. Although I plan to keep a few since I’m still keeping my D800. Yes, sometimes it’s just fun to shoot with the older stuff.

I never liked the D5. I preferred the feel of the D500 and D850.

D500 still an amazing camera Love mine .I upgraded t Z 6 but the 500 feels so much better

@@castieldiallo2945 I shot the 500 for. while and did move up to full frame. But make no mistake great landscapes are possible with a DX . I just uploaded a short on photos I took in 2015 with the 3200 and those images are amazing, you can check out if you like

I'm the opposite. I know there's a grip but grips just throw the balance off for me. I say grip because I shoot vertical half the time.

45 mpx stack, what is stack? Do i have that on my Z6 II

A Stacked CMOS Sensor is a camera sensor with parts separated into different layers. This makes the camera take better pictures with more detail and less noise. The Z6ii does not have a stacked sensor, but it is a BSI (back side illuminated) sensor, which is very good and very capable.

I just upgrade from the D3 to the D5! I thought about the D6 but I could get the Z9 for the same price, USED! BUT, What's Next that will make the Z9 obsolete? 2025, 2026-7?? What's gonna top the 9? and How? P.S. I was getting Pro shots W/my D3 the 5 is Cleaner. maybe I'll pick up a good used Z9 THX

The majority of professional wedding, portrait, and real estate photographers prefer DSLRs over mirrorless cameras. When I ask photographers why they prefer DSLRs, they frequently say that DSLRs are better for flash photography and that their lenses have better micro contrast and color saturation because the optics' character cannot be replicated by adjusting mirrorless camera settings. Furthermore, the build quality of the DSLR lenses is a key reason why many people choose DSLR cameras. Inclusion: many professional photographers only use professional mirrorless cameras for video.

amazing points. DSLRs are far from dead. actually they get better over time because we start missing the look of them after using some tech perfect Z lenses and Z cams. when we go back on DLSR we are pleasantly surprised. Happens each and every time for me.

I was looking at a used D4S for under $500. No issues, under 100k shutter. I almost jumped on it (take my money)… but then I logically thought about it and felt like I’d just be throwing $460 away. Sounds like blasphemy because the D4S is amazing.

Naw, that camera is bearly used at 100K for D4S standards, and No way will you throw money away. Thats a great price. More than 90% depreciation over a decades time. I'd take it. hehe

Same. Auto capture, pixel shift. I’m planning outings, going hiking, etc. with my Z8 that I otherwise wouldn’t have. So the Z8 is literally making me a better healthier person. LOL 😂 It’s true though.

Z9 still can't make it's images look like film 😅 still great camera tho. It's so weird that what I'm seeing is that people (clients/consumers) want the total opposite of what camera manufacturers are providing currently. Granted they are giving photographers exactly what they want.

What he's saying is the older DSLR's can take images as well as the Z9 can 90% of the time and can be had used both body and lenses for a lot less then the new tech. I still haven't seen photos that stand out to me and say mirrorless took this shot. I would never know!
