Nikon D6 vs Nikon D5 | Worth the upgrade or?

I own the D6, D5 and the Z9; the D6 is my preferred camera for low light action. The files on the D6 seem to be cleaner on it, I'm talking prep sports on poorly lit fields at 12,800 ISO and higher. The auto focusing is definitely better than the D5, closer to the Z9 in speed. I purchased the D6 because I found one with 350 clicks for about half the retail price new. With all the legacy long glass I have (200, 300, 400, 600) I thought it would be a good investment. The D6 is clearly superior to the D5, and I think Nikon wanted to give the legacy lens owners a technologically improved DSLR. So it is a definite keeper for me (D6), I'll sell my D5 before the D6. Can't help with video stuff since I don't shoot any video stuff.

I find the 100% zoom on the Z9 is significantly more magnified than the D6 because of the 45 megapixels. That's why the D6 looks cleaner. I noticed it when I lowered the file size in jpg, from large to medium on the z9. It looked cleaner at the lower resolution equivalent to the D6.

thanks Dan for the comment. Giving me some insight on a D6. Now are the files cleaner at higher ISOs due to the processor you think? The sensor is the same. maybe Nikon has some special sauce in this last D flagship. For you and having all these long f mount teles. it just makes sense to own a D6 and use it and enjoy it. Half the price is a good deal. this D6 is on cue to be a collectors item given the amount of bodies that were actually made compared to others. 7500-10K units worldwide and thats not allot at all.

Really have no idea, I just seem to see a little less noise on the D6 images that the D5 and the Z9. I'm a heavy cropper on some of my images and that's were I really notice less noise, now it is a subtle thing and I picked up on it especially when working with D6 and Z9 images. And then viewing my D5 and Z9 I saw the same thing. So here is my preference for poorly lit venues; D6 first, D5 and then Z9. Let me qualify that I shoot JPEG with added sharpness and some clarity, normal setting on High ISO noise setting (at 12,800) and usually Auto White Balance.@@Vahagraphy

Thank you for this! I have been wondering the difference between the D5 and D6 for ages! On my last live I asked a gentleman who came on spur of the moment and he was talking about the autofocus in detail which might answer your question. I will watch it back and note where in the live it is! I too, was considering buying a D6 for the same reason, that it will be the last...so I wanted to have the newest DSLR I could find. But hey, you never know......maybe Nikon will suprise us and make another DSLR one day for old times sake 🙃

Just got a Zf Claire and let me tell you. this camera has your name written all over it. If there was any camera for you, this is the one. however. the grip. If you are used to the feel of unibody D3. the Zf is totally different. but I dont think you have big hands so this might just work.

Ich habe nun zum Dritten mal meine Nikon D6 wieder zurück gekauft! Habe alle Kameras von Nikon duch, angefangen mir einer D70, D80, D200, D300, D300s, D2xs, D700, D3, D3x, D4, D4s, 2 mal D5, D6, Z6 Z6 II, Z7 II, Z8 Z9.. Es hat mich alles zusammen ein Vermögen gekostet verkauf immer mit viel Verlusten. Die Nikon D6 bleibt die beste Kamera auch 2024..... Die Bildqualität der D5 ist um längen schlechter eine Nikon D4s und eine Nikon D3x kommen im Low ISO an die Nikon D6 ran aber nicht im High ISO Bereich. Thank You Nikon for the Nikon D6.

Never owned either but did own a D3s and I'd still use the D3s today for any job day or night. The D5 and D6 are overkill for any job in the foreseeable future. I think even the D3s and D4 will be usable forever. At this point the only photographers really needing the D6 are robo cams from agencies and legacy shooter's that prefer a DSLR. The Z8 and Z9 don't even need new models unless they plan to integrate ai denoise in camera.

Great way of thinking. If push comes to shove and I need to get the shot. Even the D2H with 4MP can do that job. Low light maybe not but.

@dct124 - Totally agree. I still use my D3s for weddings and have zero issues with its performance. Not to take away from the amazing performance of today's cameras, but I am also starting to think the D3s will out last me, LOL!

To this day I still use the D3s with satisfaction and I plan to continue using it because it has wonderful and workable files. I hope soon to have a D5 alongside it and off I'll take photos with all the equipment for another few years

I like DSLRs but I like film also. I resisted the change to digital, then found myself behind the Eightball. It is more so with all the new z lenses coming out. The very wide Z mount opens up lot of lens designs that were not available with the F mount. Great, new lens designs not realized yet. It's always about the lenses and maximizing the use of them.

Hi, I don't have any D6, but a D5, bought one year ago for a very good price : a little less than 2000 euros, on the web, from a guy who lives at less one km from me, in a near street by feet. It had about 1000 triggers, the guy had bought it brand new and haven't found any time to use it, and was interested by going on Z system. Of course, a D6 in the same conditions for me would have been the Holy Graal, but just to tell you that I appreciate one-piece Nikon camera, I do agree with you, it's great to have it in hands, it's an unique experience. But as my D5 is really like brand new, I will stay with it, but I will try to look out for a D6 if a good deal is offered to me. Best regards from Reunion island. Gus

I never used the D6, but I own a D780, which as launched the same year as the D6. To me the D6 is a similar case as the D780. The D5 and the D750 are amazing cameras, even in 2024, but they knew mirrorless was the future. But, in 2020 many users still wanted DSLRs, so they upgraded their amazing bodies to match some of the mirrorless specs. That's why they released the D6 and the D780 IMO. Coming from APS-C, I find the D780 amazing, but I don't think it's worth upgrading for the D750 owners, unless they need some of the new specs.

@@Vahagraphy I bought the Canon R3 and 400mm RF with 2x tele. I was looking for a lighter bird rig and couldn’t afford the Nikkor E telephoto lenses only the 500mm G which was sooooo heavy. Once E lenses dropped in price because of the Z, I dumped Canon and went back to a D5 and the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm F/4E FL ED VR! Unbelievable combo and I’m so fortunate to get this great gear at such a phenomenal price! Keep your Z’s and R’s!

Man! If you want to have the D6 the moment is now! Nikon is selling refurbished for $3,599.95 I got myself one today. The deal lasts 4 days only. I will let you know how the auto-focus go. I have the Z9, D5, and 2 bodies of the D500. I was waiting for this day! D6 brand new! I shoot in low light and the auto focus sensitivity of my D500 is hands down better than the Z9. The D500 handles 2EV lower than the Z9. I can't wait to test the D6.

Auto focus for video is not bad if you get your settings right and not a lot of fast moving subjects otherwise I always use manual focus is the best thing for video

I own both D5 and D6, and D6 is fantastic. Is faster, autofocus is really another level compared to D5. Customization on D6 is amazing. Battery life is great, and when you use a new battery for Z9 gets even better. I can shoot 3 days in raw on 5 days Indian wedding. 20mpx are the sweet spot, and that's why I don’t own Z9. I have two D850’s and Im tired of file management. 46mpx is just too much. D6 is a solid performer, and this camera will have a place in my bag for a long time to come. For video? I don’t really care. Im not a video guy. In my 12 years carrier, I haven’t done a single video clip.

No it is not worth it...i have a D6 upgraded from D4s and even that was not worth the upgrade. i juse them both but i can also tell you my D3x are still my favorit(no Video)

The D6 has 2 steps better dynamic than the D5. I have a D4s and a D6 the AF is much faster, the WB is better, 20,8 MPix are a litte bit better than the 16 MPix.

I found the WB way better on the D5 than the D4 also. Ahh Didnt know the DR was that much better. I heard the AF was much improved. Hows D6 video AF? Does it perform like a Z6 and or D780? Or is it still unusable?

I agree. I mean, 1. you have to have all F mount collection, 2. You dont own a D5. 3. You have no intention of moving to Z. The only way I buy is D6 is if I find one for 60-70 percent off, Unless its brand new in the box. Then I'd maybe go up to .50 cents on the dollar. Maybe.

It's not so versatile, workaround like 45mp ( croping , printing.) But... These cameras are special, and the truth is the photographers that have being worked with these cameras are also. The business unfortunately not always follows one specific necessity. Time...History ...

Great points. From my understanding the D6 was launched and then the Olympics where canceled do to covid and this camera production line kind of stopped. Not to many of these were made or sold from what I've heard. I love my D5 very much and looking at the specs .these cameras are very similar to one another except for the AF system.
