Love this end to end explanation come it really helped me string some of the concepts together that I learned independently. One thing I like to do with my setup, is I have a second carabiner attached to my prussic that is a pulley carabiner, and I pass the tail of my rope through the carabiner and back down. This allows me to create a three to one system which, combined with my foot loop allows me to ascend the rope with the help of both my legs and arms. This could feasibly be done with a regular carabiner, but the pulley takes out a lot of the extra work.

In a similar way I like redirecting the brake end thru the same carabiner that has the sling and prusik on it as it's very natural/easier to pull down on the brake line as you try to pull yourself up on the prusik/step into the foot loop. If I have an extra carabiner I will redirect the brake line in the same way but just thru its own carabiner attached to the prusik so there is less material rubbing on eachother. I haven't tried a pulley or a pulley carabiner with this set up so it would be interesting to see how much easier it is. One other cool tip I have seen is that if you have an ATC instead of a grigri you can attach a locking carabiner from the "ear" of the ATC directly to your belay loop and then the ATC will essentially progress capture like a grigri does while you ascend.

I've seen a few youtube videos on this topic and I think you did the best job of explaining and demonstrating it. I'd be curious what you can do if the person who needs to be rescued is a child and you can't rely on their weight holding you as you ascend. Is there any way to do that type of rescue without a fixed 2nd line? Would you have to hoist them to the anchor before ascending? I imagine that would be tough on both the child and the belayer.

Interesting question I’m not sure, be a fun thing to test though, maybe just “belay” a gallon of water in a backpack see if it works
