the daily office is a prt of the genius of Anglicanism. It takes the medieval tradition of the monks, the spiritual elite, simplifies it, distills the good of it, makes it actually reasonable for a normal working person to do, and then gives it not to only the clergy, but to the normal person, for their spiritual enrichment and a more widespread glorification to God. Society would be better in every way if it was set to the rythms of the prayerbook.

I’m an Orthodox Christian, but greatly appreciate the BCP! I’ve a 1662 version print that I often use in personal devotion at home. It is basic enough that there’s nothing in the daily office morning and evening prayer services that an Orthodox Christian would find heretical. It’s essentially just another method of praying and reading through the Bible. And that’s always good!

Very, very good video. One thing I suggest is (if you'd be gracious enough) to so a whole video of you completing one Daily Office yourself, with the camera solely focused on the BCP, so people can see the methodology of using the prayer book in practice, as page referencing can be very intimidating. Another subject I'd like you to broach for the Anglican "peace", is the Anglican church's 3rd office, the Compline, in traditional language as it can be very cathartic. Other than that, you're a great Anglican litergical resource that the Internet greatly needs. You as a content maker brings serenity to those through those who are baptised in the faith but wouldn't know how to practice it. God bless and keep up the good work 🙏

As an American I am proud to be a part of an ACNA church. I love our BCP, but I want to get a hold of the 1662 as well. Spotify has a podcast that runs morning an evening prayers (ACNA BCP) which is how I do the daily office. It helps me feel as though I am doing daily office in a small group. I enjoy it.

I would suggest that the DO is not only “devotional” but catechetical. I find that having practiced the DO with my husband for the past several years (having been an evangelical and now in the ACNA and my spouse as a priest), the impact of the scripture readings, the pace of the monthly Psalter, and the repetition of the prayers (which are largely Scripture) have been profound. It is the Anglican Way and a good rule of life for every Christian, in my estimation!

Excellent video! Very helpful and concise. Many ACNA churches I've visited use the 2019 BCP, but quite a few parishes use the 1662 in either the original language or a modernization (our parish uses a modernization). When my wife and I were confirmed, our pastor and bishop gifted us with two copies of the IVP 1662 BCP that you use in this video. That's what I use in my personal devotions. Thanks again!

I wish there was a conservative, Biblical Anglican church in Tauranga 😢 We seem to only have woke ones with (sorry) lady vicars. Or modernised to be semi-rock concerts. I am hungry for an old-fashioned biblical conservative Anglican church here that uses the wonderful old hymns and actually believes in God!
@daniellencooper7922
@daniellencooper7922 5 ай бұрын
'Biblical conservative' makes no sense. The texts in the bible were written over many centuries and with a variety of religious communities in mind, and representing the biases of a variety of biblical authors and editors. Viewed in their historical context, many of these texts are deeply radical. Understanding that the Bible comes to us from the past doesn't mean we can't read it as scripture and reflect on passages as part of our religious life, but it doesn't exist simply to flatter our ego by seeming to confirm the pre-existing worldview that we bring to it as readers. The same goes for the church - it isn't a private club where everyone should think and feel as we do. Let go of your labels, let go of judgement, and listen for God's voice

11:45 Regarding the "Absolution" section, another option for laypeople would be to pray the collect for the Twenty-First Sunday after Trinity: "Grant, we beseech thee, merciful Lord, to thy faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve thee with a quiet mind, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen." (pp. 196 of the IVP edition)

11:43 an important detail here: while you must skip the absolution if you are alone or in a group without a minister, you are encouraged by the 1662 BCP to turn to the collect of the 21st sunday after Trinity, where there is a prayer which asks for the absolution of sins.

Within The Universal Church The Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours is technically above the Rosary. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the most important followed by The Divine Office. Both have Liturgical status. The Rosary is an extremely popular and fruitful devotion but does not hold liturgical status. I think I’ve got that correct.

To add to the multiplication of lectionaries (which can be extremely confusing) I have a BCP - not sure its exact vintage, but not especially old - which has a Table of Lessons organised on the basis of a regular January-December calendar. The Church of England has a useful app, Daily Prayer, which affords two options: Morning and Evening Prayer from the more recent Common Worship prayer book; but also a traditional BCP form. Let's look at the chosen readings for Morning Prayer for 12th February (which today happens to be the Monday after Quinquagesima, which is the Sunday before Lent): Revised Table of Lessons, 1922: Psalms 62-64; Genesis 29 1-20; Matthew 23 13-39 International 1662: Psalms 62-64; Leviticus 20; Mark 12 International 1662 (Alternative Table 1961, Year II): Psalms 62-64; Genesis 31 1-9 and 14-21; Matthew 23 13-39 Episcopal 1979: Psalm 25; Proverbs 27:1-6, 10-12; John 18:15-18, 25-27 ACNA 2019: Psalm 106:1-18; Genesis 42 or 42:1-28; Matthew 2 My BCP: Psalms 62-64; Exodus 12 v43 - 13 v 17; Matthew 24 to v39 Daily Prayer App (BCP): Psalms 62-64; Genesis 37 1-11; Galatians 1 Daily Prayer App (Common Worship): Psalms 27 and 30; Genesis 37 1-11; Galatians 1 The simplest advice, I suggest, is that if you from time to time perform Morning or Evening Prayer in the company of others then choose the format which they using for your private devotions, too. If you tend to perform these alone, then choose whichever lectionary suits you the best. If you bite off more than you can chew, you may find yourself rushing or unable to focus for the longer time required by more passages of scripture.

I was an Episcopalian but there was to much of the Schleiermacher/Bultmann apostasy in it so I moved over to the Born Again/Evangelical side because they still believe the stuff. I had left the Church in my youth and become Agnostic and returned to the Episcopal Church much like the British author C S Lewis because I came to believe that Christianity is TRUE. So finding that the Church would recite the Creeds and still tolerate the Bishop of New Jersey denying everything it said made me say "these guys don't believe what they are saying, I'm going to where they really believe." But still I think that we over here on the "Born Again" side need to get back to the grounding of the historic Protestant Reformation.

Sorry but your initial statement about the Rosary being Catholics' quintessential prayer is sadly wrong. The Liturgy of the Hours follows the Psalms and Scriptures to a set calendar that corresponds with the Mass of the day. Not only Clergy and Religious, but all Catholics are encouraged to pray the LOTH, in union with the whole Church, the Body of Christ, as you also suggest Anglicans do in the Daily Office. Before Vatican II clerics were bound to pray the office seven times a day, reflecting the ancient temple practice of the Israelites as reflected in the Psalms. Now there are 5 daily hours in the modern Liturgy of the Hours. Anyway, thanks for this interesting video, I can appreciate it as a liturgy geek!

I was wondering I noticed that on your slides of showing what to read in the book that it looks like you use leader in the place of the priest interval? There was the part at the beginning that you mentioned not to say because it is only for a priest to say and then the other intervals that say priest that then you said we can say with the answers. Sorry if this is confusing just wondering why there is a difference between what we can say of the priest intervals and what not to say and why? Thanks!

0:07 Interestingly, the Rom. Cth. Church does have a prayer book much like the Anglican. The Liturgy Of The Hours. As a Protestant I think they ought to pay more attention to that than those beads. I was Episcopalian a long time ago (American equivalent of Church Of England) and our BCP was to a great extent just a watered down Lit. O T Hrs. My brother became Rom. Cath. so I became familiar with Lit O T Hrs. as part of my study in response. My conclusion, Luther was right, Leo X was wrong, I'm still Protestant.

Why do some of the narrative readings (especially Old Testament) skip chapters? Does this not throw you off to read something one day, then the following day to skip ahead a little and not go “wait, how did we get to this point now?”

It tends to only skip chapters such as genealogies and extensive law stuff, I've not found it to be a problem.

Don’t you use the 2019 BCP of the ACNA?

I have two questions. First, how do I know which collects are supposed to be read each day? Second, I have a 1662 BCP International edition and couldn’t find the point in the daily office for personal prayer, should I do it before the final prayer?

Hi good questions. 1.) There is a section in the BCP called 'The Collects, Epistles, and Gospels' which has a Collect for each Sunday of the week, and you just repeat this collect for every day of that week until the next Sunday. In the International Version these begin on page 49 and at the time of me writing this reply we are at the 20th Sunday after Trinity, which is on page 194. 2.) Do personal prayer either before the collects or after them, but before the Prayer of St Chrysostom

This guys good. Anglicans have this habit of talking themselves out of a job.

Hoping you'll see this comment, which actually is in response to an older one. In relation to The Shape of the Liturgy by Dom Gregory Dix, have you read any books on the Anglican liturgy by the late Rev. Dr. Peter Toon? He thought Dom's conclusions were faulty.

No I haven't, thanks for the recommendation. Yes, many of Dix's conclusions about Cranmer (such as labeling his Eucharistic theology as Zwinglian) were totally wrong but I do believe he still gives a very helpful analysis of how the 1552 liturgy is shaped and structured to express sola fide.

Do Anglicans pray to Mary and/or pray the Rosary?
@newkingdommedia9434
@newkingdommedia9434 2 жыл бұрын
We have our own rosary but it doesn't have anything addressed to Mary. We are not supposed to pray to her as the Articles and Homilies forbid it but some Anglicans do it anyway. I don't.

Yes Anglo-Catholics do. They mostly have a statue of Our Lady (Mary) in their churches.

Roman Catholics..no It's members of the Catholic church. The rosary isn't the quintessential "Roman" Catholic prayer. Where do you get these ideas?

I was onboard until you mentioned your preference for the breakaway, anti woman anti gay ACNA, which is NOT part of the Anglican communion. Not least of the evils of the ACNA is their appropriating the name of Anglican for themselves. Utterly shameless.

You mean the actual traditional Anglicans who haven’t become part of the world system? The ones who stick to Biblical authority and don’t bow to anti-Christian compromised lifestyles?
