It's probably worth mentioning, that when you lay back, you don't inhale those toxic fumes that were generated during soldering. I know you guys are using some kind of ventillations, but still, it's a big advantage for someone who does this during the whole day.

Yep, fume extractors help but they can't get all of it. Plus the added benefit that you're not hunched over squinting into a scope all day does wonders for your neck and back and lowers eyestrain.

A single lens takes away depth perception so the stereo microscope does have some advantaged but I must agree, using a stereo microscope does give neck strain and I wake up with a headache because of it.

I'm not an electrical/electronics engineer or technician but I've become interested in it after my first time doing some soldering on a video game console (a PS3 to soft mod it years ago) to the point of making it a hobby of mine and probably become one or both (engineer/technician). I have plans to build a small workbench for electronics "repair", mods/projects and much more outside of that (as part of my hobby). So I've been looking for a nice affordable trinocular microscope (from Eakins or AmScope) or alternatives and came across this video. I really like what you said about having comfort using the monitor instead of the microscope with your back bent for long hours (even if I won't be using it for many long hours a day). From research that I've come across for a long period of time, both about microscope cameras and monitors (the latter for my gaming setup), I have found that when using a camera instead of the microscope for soldering or anything else, there's lag from what you're actually doing to what gets shown on the monitor. So if the monitor also doesn't have a low input lag then that's even worse. If I decide to go with the comfort route instead of the microscope, then I will consider getting a camera with low lag, a monitor with low input lag and response time. I just don't know what size though because a lot of the bigger sizes monitors have a higher input lag. A 24 inch monitor for 1080p (if that's the camera's resolution) doesn't sound bad, especially if using it with a monitor arm to move it closer or a 27 - 32 inch monitor for a 4K resolution.

Honestly, i bought a cheap otg microscope at ebay and connected to my phone and place to a comfortable position like your posture @Mr. Alex and i got used to it after 3 hrs of practicing micro soldering its not the best microscope but it serve its purpose. One hint at a good scope is to work on concrete floor too . Wood floors in homes will vibrate every time you move .

The problem with stereomicroscopes is that it takes a while to fine tune your setup (chair/desk/microscope height ... etc) Once you have the right setup and are used working with them they are WAY better than any camera microscope.

Not for everyone they are not. It's not a one size fits all. Some people just can't get used to stereo scopes, or have unusual eye prescription for example.

I use a trinocular scope. That way I have the best of both worlds. Some people have trouble looking over at a screen while doing things with their hands. I'm sure they could get good at it if they practiced but if they've done that for many many years, It's a tough transition. I am one of those people. Been using a stereoscope for a very long time so I only have the trinocular so customers can see what I'm working on from the waiting room. But if you're starting out this setup he's using is VERY nice! It truly is one of the best microscope cameras I've ever seen. The resolution and clarity with the antiglare light are crazy good!

In the way back days I used a surplus dissecting microscope fitted with a simple camera for doing SMD repairs. The field of view was perfect for replacing the itty bitty parts😊❤

I selected such setup for me intuitively before watching this video. And exactly because of the reasons said. My main was not wanting to stare my eyes into some googles and bend myself into the microscope. This quickly get my patience away and make me interrupting the process. Fine tuning manual distance calculation with looking at screen is less of the problem. Comfort! Comfort! Comfort!

You make a good case for your setup. I am glad I held off buying. My reason would be I only have usable vision in one eye so I was going for something with a screen. There are units out there with a screen built in but with the larger screen I can see how you would be better off at the end of the day. Cheers.

Another advantage of using the camera over the eye piece is that chances of the technician inhaling flux and solder fumes is less.

I use a microscope with a built-in 7" screen mounted on a scissor arm and I would like to try a stereoscopic microscope but space is a luxury, and the scissors arm takes virtually 0 space while the stereo microscope is huge for my small working area. Like with cameras, the best one is always the one at your hands.

I have one and I agree that a stereo microscope does put some strain on you. However, the picture quality, stereo image, and field of view are very much worth it. It's a night and day difference. You really wouldn't understand unless you've experienced it. A compromise would be to use a trinocular simulfocal microscope, since you can see the image on a monitor at the same time. You can use the monitor to solder if you get tired of using the microscope.

I solder all day with a microscope and it absolutely does strain my back and neck. I actually get very exhausted by the end of the day from it. I’ve tried using the camera to my monitor as well and it’s difficult for me because I’m so used to the microscope. Maybe I’ll try it for a week just to see how it goes, self diagnostics lol.

Haha I forgot about this. I did try using only my monitor but after about an hour I couldn’t take it anymore. I’ve gotten way to used to looking into my scope to work. I’ve even put back my rubber eye cups to focus better. For some it’ll work out but for me I prefer looking into my scope eyepiece.

I always get disoriented with the hdmi cameras but I'm still young so it doesn't bother my back to use the eye pieces on my amscope. I think I'd practice more with the hdmi camera if I was getting uncomfortable. I currently just use it to make videos myself. I also am not under the microscope all day because I do automotive circuit boards mostly.

pick a correct pinset with comfortable weight and length on your hand and practice your hand on surface to hold the weight of your hand to avoid wobbles. I did practice like that. and it works for me

There is always a solution, you also have binoculars with 5x-20x enhancement, one they use jewel making or some surgeons use. To work on electronic boards what have you you could make an arm that could do all the movements you need, and you place a non static board on that arm or mount that can have all the movements you need, and some clamps that don't damage the board so you can sit backwards in your chair and still see what you solder, a light can be made on the arm or so. It all can be made under some 100-200 euro's

Just got a stereoscope for removing wood slivers. I could not afford one with a camera. for long hours I believe your method should be standard. Posture is everything for a healthy life. Luckily I just do hobby work with jewelry and engraving a few hours a day. I would most certainly do this if I were at work.... a no Brainer for me.

That's explain the problem with my neck and back.......There are some advantages and dissadvantages using camera and the microscope itself. On the stereo microscope you can see crystal clear image and the screen will never show the same as the real picture. But if i think my back pain i better do the same soon before its too late.

I agree you are saving your eyes from strain, but I feel the thing lost is you loose is the sense of depth, but if it works for you great for me maybe once I get older I might try your method cause I don't want my eyesight to fail faster because of using a stereo microscope. I could see myself using your method one day for sure. The one good thing is with recording sometimes I record stuff with my microscope that isn't visible on the screen but I am able to see it in person so it isn't good for recording but you won't have the issue with that with your method.

Stereomicroscope with Greenough design always give you off axis view, generally 5 degree off axis. Not like connecting cmount lens to camera that give you exactly top viewing position.

@@alrepairs777 first and foremost let me just say after having it for all these months, that it’s worth it. Yes it’s a little pricey, but considering it’ll last you years, it’s amazing and the quality is just as amazing. It is a manual focus and I use the same stand that Alex uses (the AmScope one), I did use a different stand beforehand but it was terrible so I just went all out and got the AmScope one and man it really all is an amazing bundle, good luck bro!
