Why is this so hard to find? Foot-shaped shoes with cushioned soles?! Altra is the only brand I found and you can't buy it in my county. Yes, I can order them online from overseas, but I don't even know my true size. I have WIDE feet and have worn like 2-3 sizes+ for several years. Barefoot shoes are not an option as I have a painful joint condition and cannot even stand on soft floors without feeling pain in my feet and hips.

Exactly? Why? 😩 All I want is space for my toes. I don't feel the need to be "grounded" or whatever, although, having flexibility in the shoe to flex your feet freely is also nice.

Have you tried Lems? Not cushioned, but depending on the model they range between a 8mm-10mm thick rubber sole with an additional 4mm inner sole. Thick enough to have you protected. Use their Primal2 model on days i feel a bit sore. Cushion itself though other than Altra, Topo is another brand to check out that is foot-shaped. I run in in them.

I also wanted foot-shaped shoes with cushioned soles. But Altra's still too cushioned for my need. So I went for Strike Mvmnt. Shoes from Strike Mvmnt still have a 4mm drop and might not be as wide as Altra or some other barefoot shoes out there. But I actually feel like they are wider than a pair of Vivobarefoot Primus Lite, and they are perfect for my need.

Yeah. I hate that you can buy cheap shoes with cushion and comfortable materials, but not wide toe box. I don't care much about zero drop, but I'm all in for comfy shoes and clothes. I see zero reasons to squish my toes in a narrow shoe, but such are all the shoes I can afford :(

I don't understand the argument that barefoot shoes should be used on concrete. It's hard to compare it to "the ancestors of people who used to run barefoot all their lives." There was no concrete then, people had a different anatomy of movement, for example, they were shorter. With the development of technology, it is possible to combine the knowledge of healthy movement and comfort. Do not squeeze your toes, however, have some protection from continuous hard ground and choose the right drop.

There are anthropologists who believe hominins evolved to walk on rocky terrain. If that’s true, does that change your view?
@kyletucker3811
@kyletucker3811 4 ай бұрын
@@eliefeinstein6182No. Because we are not those hominins, and there's a difference between "rocky terrain" with patches of earth and straight flat surfaces of concrete. I'd also point out to those irresponsible (I would assume) anthropologist that they should also mention to people that for tens of thousands of years humans have been wearing protective footwear and constantly improving the technology for a safer and more comfortable experience that increases performance. Contrary to popular belief our ancestors were NOT walking around barefoot, they often used sandals made of woven reeds and other such materials. The problem with the whole barefoot shoes thing in my opinion is they are entirely unnecessary. There's wide fit shoes of every single style, including skate shoes which have this vaunted "zero drop" sole because ... they need to be flat. And they usually happen to be wide. I'd argue the supposed benefits people see from them are more psychological than physiological and the result of simply being more active.

There are tribes (the ones that have not been destroyed yet) who still walk around barefoot today. Even when our ancestors used shoes they were made of thin material made just enough to provide protection. Rocky terrain is also a thing. I know people who can run on stones without a problem. I know people aren't making "scientific" arguments but these kinds of arguments are still empirical in that have actually taken off shoes and tested it out themselves. Of course going barefoot with you head full of thoughts or while engaged on the phone is different from being completely connected with the environment. When it's the latter, your body (of which the foot is a part) will organize itself better using feedback from the environment as opposed to you thinking about foot strikes, cushioning and whatnot. I think worrying about cushioning too mich itself could be a psychological thing.

The crazy part I started with altras because of the zero drop. And now Lems. But I guess in my situation knowing I’m mostly on cement I figured I would always need more cushion. I thing for everyday shoes they need have more padding. For specific use case like weight lifting and other sports you will need more barefoot less padding shoes. My approach has always been to go gradually first before going all out.

One more con about ground feel - it is freezing in winter. I don't want to feel COLD ground! That's the reason I stopped wearing my Xero boots. I really love my Altras. Hope they will start making some more casual shoes in the future.
@drstalone
@drstalone 28 күн бұрын
It's not a con because it's marketed at people who already want ground feel. If you don't want ground feel that's a different thing and those shoes are not for you. Btw, depending on the temperature I would like to feel the ground just as cold as it is, and I have done it myself without shoes of course with caution. The real problem is the salt they sprinkle everywhere which can be caustic.

I find that combining altra shoes with naboso insoles provides the best of both worlds for human-made surfaces. The altra keeps the zero-drop and wide toe box, while the naboso insole provides the necessary sensory feedback that is lost when you add the extra cushion

I can vouch for this shoe. I found the Loan Peaks around 3 years ago when I bought them for trail running. However I didn't get on with them for trail running as the grip is uselss for wet UK trails IMO. BUT they were so comfy to wear, I have used them every day since (on my 3rd pair) as my general shoe. I run in usual shoes with varying drops, but I find wearing the loan peaks for general everyday use has been a game changer. I really think it has helped me stay injury free (touch wood) as it helps to stretch out my achiles and maintain stronger feet. I would recomend these to anyone as you get the benefts of zero drop with lot of cusion. I only wish they did a jet black pair so they look better when wearing to the office. Very comfy and recomend to anyone!

You bought the wrong altras if you’re going for ground feel. They have a plastic shank which takes away from that experience. More protection, less ground feel. The superiors don’t have the shank and will give you less cushion by a few mm. Still wear more comfy than barefoot on tarmac. They actually do a gym shoes aswell called the solstice. (I’ve never used them) The lone peaks have taken the place of my hiking boots, I use them for 15k plus or if it’s really wet out and entering woodlands (got waterproof ones)

Thanks for posting this! How many milimeters of sole with insole (total) would you say would be sufficient for support on concrete. I keep seeing this same comment over and over again- that barefoot insoles aren't enough cushion for concrete. I just ordered the Icarus because it has more cushion, 4mm sole plus 4mm insole. I also just ordered some Vivos, but think their thin insoles won't be a good fit for hard surfaces. I'm looking at the Topo brand now. Obviously, I'm just getting started, so thanks so much for underlining this concern.

Higher stack height is good for short term comfort. The shortcoming is its prone to pronation and cause related injuries. Imagine if it was 5 times higher instead of 2.5 times. How much height is enough? Id be interested to see your long term pain/injury progression with these. Id argue anything closer to barefoot is optimal as long as you transition easy or you are strong enough to take on the road.

(For reference my feet are 25.3cm long and 10.3cm across at the toes. I have a narrow midfoot and heel.) My problem with the Arcus is looks awful on me. Too chunky for my short, squat legs. But for long legs and high volume feet, it might look better. I bear with the weird looks because these are the only shoes I’ve tried wide enough at the toe for me.

Dude you are rolling with your heel first on concrete. It’s supposed to be toes to heel on hard surfaces. The heel to toe is only for walking on grass, forest or very soft surfaces. If you switch that you are fine. I’m a 120kg and I run on concrete all day. If you have the right technique it does not hurt a bit.

Where you felt pain at the ball of your foot by wearing barefoot shoes. Did you get the same pain by wearing Fivefingers that is full freedom for your toes? If you limit your toes while full ground connection at the same time is asking for trouble because it's like lifting heavy weights in a weird angle and you risk injury. I walk on concrete 8 hours a day in my fivefingers with no issue while vivobarefoot hurts me after an hour because the toebox is a bit too narrow for my wide feet. Never got any pain from Realfoot or Softstar either because their toe boxes are the widest ones on the market. It's all in the freedom for the toes and looking how snug you like to wear your shoes, the problem might be there.

I'm really trying to get my head around this issue myself as i have knee pain but i've also spent a lot of my working life on my feet. The way i see it is this if you're walking mainly on uneven surfaces such as a builder you'll need a stiff sole to protect your feet from igegulaties in the ground. If you're skipping though meadows or out in the country a lot on a soft surface you may not neeed cushioning underfoot. As most of us live in towns and cities where it rains a lot I would sugest a minimalist sneaker made of leather which can withstand the rain. I think a zero drop height seems nore natural to me but I don't get the naratvie that pointy toed shoes create problems as they don't. I have pointey shaped shoes and I',m not at all resictred in them. If you buy an unstructured shoe with very little heel suport or stucture you will force your foot to adopt to adapt to a bygone past. Wer're not there anymore most walk on conctete and The whole point that shoes developed over timie is times have changed. I've bought five pairs of minimalist trainers which are zero drop quite decent looking and on sale so I'll see how i get on with them. I 'm an older guy I appriciate this chanell and the content this guy has hared with us I just think if you remove your insole and look at your inprint on it that should tell you weather you've bought the right shoe size . I expect most of you have. This idea that your foot ends at the end of you're shoe or boot is ridiculous. I supose it might be appropriate for women width their heels.

@@mod8 I have fairly wide feet with relatively flat arches - so in order to be comfortable I need something with a wide toe box and minimal arches (prominent arches are like torture for me). Barefoot shoes are perfect for that - but my job has me mostly standing for upwards of seven hours in a day, and standing for that length in barefoot shoes is very painful due to the lack of cushioning. That is what Lone Peak 8s have been perfect for.

Walking on flat concrete is unatural so barefoot doesn't make sense there. I have a pair of cheap barefoot shoes on order and looking forward to trying them out but mainly aroubd the house/garden and perhaps some walks on trails etc once i get used to them but for concrete ill be sticking to shoes with cushioning.( Zero drop if i can find some. )

Just bought an altra shoe because of this video It was kinda small Bought another one, another model (both were used, it's a different model) It's somehow the narrowest toe box of my three shoes (my barefoot one, my new altra, my most recent altra) Man, I just want some cushion with a wide toe box. ;-; The cushion is very nice though, they feel like clouds.

@@andersstengaardjensen2208in my experience barefoot shoes last longer, but it depends on the brand. With regular shoes, the midsole usually wears out first. Barefoot shoes don’t have a midsole. I have a pair of Vivobarefoot Primus Trails that has close to 2000 km and Xero Prio’s with well over 2000km.

I'm gonna be honest. Haven't tried barefoot shoes. Probably won't ever try them. Ever since I've learned about them they've struck me as fairly redundant. I don’t wanna get into a long spiel about every single reason, so I'll just say wide fit shoes and skate shoes have existed for decades. Skate shoes are very flat if you don't want a drop point and wide fit shoes allow more room. Problem solved, no need for shoes the thickness of watershoes. And as you pointed out for soecifically running there are shoes without a drop, albeit hard to find.

@@PeteOnPurpose - all good Pete! Just an observation when I watched your video. If the shoes work for your environment and get you in better alignment… that’s what matters. I’ve found when I go for longer walks/hikes in my Xeros or Vivos, that my feet and calves will be really sore the next few days. I’ve also been wearing zero drop/mimimalist shoes for about 3 years and although I feel I’m very accustomed- do not put enough miles in with them on to avoid pain when I go 3-5 miles. My problem with the barefoot shoe movement is A. it’s not based on science, and B. they’re always marketing how they do “on the trails.” I live in Texas, we have concrete trails. The truth about barefoot shoes being natural…..flat concrete is not natural, so you need an unnatural solution for it, which is cushioned shoes.
