Smoke that twisted artistically and smelt of abandonment. He was in his cousins cubby hole, in the heart of Umoja Inako, prepared to devour his expensive foe i.e wine. He hungrily gobbled down the first shot, and the second and the third punctuating every shot with stories and soaked in laughter. His shaky hands could not afford another shot. Wine kickied in. Mixing with all he had taken earlier on. Eyes swiveling towards the back of his head in a distressed sense. Everything in the house changed figure in a blink of an eye. His cousin paid for his sit and the vacant one next to the driver and instructed him to take him to Central Business District. The uneven uncarpeted road heaved him from side to side. He was shaken by the hiccup that came up his throat issuing forth a breath laced with the smell of alcohol. A sudden stinging urge to pee took over his body. He drited into unconsciousness, the world was a blur, random people seemed to float around his pool of thoughts. He was the great philanthropist, dishing out his valuables in a spirit of kindness. His wallet, watch, shoes etc. Abel lazily rolled open his eyes. Screwing them with the inside of his palm. He felt light and it dawned on him why. All that act of philanthropy that danced out in his dreams was actually real only that to the outside world he was being robbed. He dragged himself outside brushing off the server who claimed he was not paid. A blanket of darkness lingered within the city. He set out to walk to Railways to catch his bus. He weaved through the streets unusually slow like someone under hypnosis, weight of travel clearly weighed on him, so he took an hours rest in one of the public benches. By the time he found a bus that plied his route, it was 9.45pm, Curfew was imposed in Kibera due to the high rate of crime. By around 10pm, the streets were swept clean, no soul was to be found roaming outside by the men in blue. Street lights dotted the 'state' with their lights washing over the in roads. They welcomed Abel as he trudged on, one step forward and another back. His footsteps seemed to echo throughout the desolate street. "Yo Irush, kuna mahali munaingia tena?" In Abel's mind, he thought this was another escapade from his friends. Irush motioned to him to be quiet. It was a case where a thief turned himself in before fourty days. The police were content that he made their work painless. " Usiogope kijana, hatukuwachi, ingia. Karibu sana." He was satisfied to know they were heading out for another 'drinking spree'. A slight nudge momentarily brought him back to reality, making sense of where they were. He had never been in a police cell before. The walls were dull and paint had started peeling off. Thick stale hung over the room, a cocktail of bad breath and sweat. The unsettling smell set him on the edge but that did not matter, all he wanted was to call to the universe and promise to do good things when released. " Irush mambo ya pombe mimi nimemalizana nayo. It's a wrap. Sikuwai fikiria ninaweza lala kwa police station." In the wake of October, three weeks after Abel was netted, Irush walks up to him with another plan. Anger flowed through Abel, it's smell bile. " Nionyeshe hao vijana wako wapi, hakuna kijana wa Kibera anaweza guzwa nikiwa hapa" The residence was situated in a police band. They quickened their pace, crunches of gravel crying behind them. " Respect is about to reign" . He mouthed those words in silence. Pounding on the door, Irush shouted, "Fungua! The door flung open with an annoying creak following it. Even before he was given the chance to meet his visitors, Irush yelled " Niaje jo! wewe ulinichapa juzi bana ulikuwa unafikiria hatutapatana, nimecome hata na boy wangu" Now, the next 15 minutes was an ordeal never told be forgotten. They were beaten to a pulp. Irush was mean with his words. He failed to mention that the law caught him on the wrong side and was manhandled by a policeman. Both paid the price, the policeman's agile movements tore the two apart. They walked away hurriedly, their tongues soaked in tastes of blood. On their way home, they were at a loss of words. It was a moment of reflection. The type that leads to a new way onwards. " Buda" uttered Irush. " Situingie club tupige mbili bana tujiambie pole" " Unaujinga sana Irungu, hii pombe imefanya karibu tuuliwe sahi halafu unasema turudi, mimi nimewachia pombe?" Well, it was another chapter being young and stupid. Year marked in their history.
