skraeling287 partially, but in other ways, totally balanced. their problem is that their public expectation is to be TOO polite, and very passive. you don't even say "no." you say "that's very difficult" (meaning no), and the recipient is expected to fold no matter what (to be polite and not trouble the other, even if that person is supposed to be providing a service, and may be completely in the wrong, or just acting lazy as fuck).

Dopa44 true, but that's not the point here. the only part of this story that leads anywhere positive is learning assertiveness and self-defense. guaranteed, if that guy (no matter how old or "senile") ran across a black cashier chick with a couple of tattoos and a slightly overbearing personality, he'd be like "nah." self-preservation is strong in damn near all people. if you're quiet, meek, averting gaze, etc, you are a prime target for victimization.
@Qopa7 жыл бұрын
you could've at least type on google on law site, explaining why a certain type of sexual harassment is not a crime but an offense, while a crime would have something to do with physical touch. You dont just dictates that sexual harassment is a crime when you know nothing about the law. In some country like France and China, the penalty for sexual harassment, the minor ones, are treated as a much bigger offense than anywhere else in the world. And that's true, she could've not been weak when interacting with the perverted old dude, she should be threatening him that she will call the police and such. And i mean there's a guide line on how to deal with sexual harassment in work place too. If this was such a big deal for her, she should've try to find a way to deal with it herself, not hating, but i feel like she had been alittle bit too spoiled before entering in a workplace.
@Qopa7 жыл бұрын
The society, especially in work place, taught us to be self independent on your role, you're not supposed to act like your entire company or acquaintances like a family member. And i never said she was spoilt in the work place, she was spoilt before so she's not used to fix problem that she alone faces.

It is funny once you realize NOTHING IN YOUR LIFE HAS CHANGED. I have also been groped, it did not affect me at all. Someone got a good feel, and I went home and lived my life. I did not catch an STD, I was not harmed, literally nothing happened to me other than I may have made someone else's day.

Enoch H I have been grouped a couple of times. I actually don't mind it due to my personality and I find it quite funny. However, once a guy grasped my ass. And I mean his fingers were basically in the biscuit factory. I came close to blows with that guy. Worse for girls as it comes with an added feeling of fear and helplessness.
@jazzyhk18098 жыл бұрын
ugh, I feel so strongly about this. They tell you that it's your responsibility to protect yourself, but will they let you? If you do protect yourself and speak up, they'll most likely stand on the customer's side if he makes a big fuss about it. That would be a terrible experience to have to go through. Second of all, it's the business' legal responsibility to provide a safe work place for their employees. Them telling you it's your responsibility to protect yourself is just wrong on so many levels. They can't expect a worker to do that when they're under the pressure of possibly being fired from their job just for protecting themselves. And how is it okay to let someone get away with a crime just because he's old? He should at least be given warnings instead of just being allowed to roam wild and do whatever he pleases JUST because he has the old age card. Also, considering how the president didn't even know about the whole groping situation, that's either just bad management or he's just saying that so he's not responsible for anything. //tut tut//

To answer some of your questions. Japan is full of sexual harassments towards most women there. So they made a gender train to make most women feel more comfortable without having a lot of men wanting to touch or kidnap them there. Every place have their own issues and problems. Of corse not all men are that way, but there are a lot of them out there who will do anything to have a woman or women in their grasp. Sexual assaults are everywhere, but in japan its pretty crazy.

And even safety to property are being violated to by many of the youth's fantasies on ideal uotpian society.

Sounds like that old man was just a pervert! It's disgusting that the staff didn't take it seriously but they could say that it was up to you to file a complaint. I know where I live you have the right to refuse service to someone but idk about Japan. From what I've heard about sexual harrassment in Japan this seems to be typical behaviour (just what I've heard from people living there). Seems like it's not taken seriously or it's excused because of age etc. He seemed like he was of sound mind though from what you said. I mean like he was able to buy/pay fro his groceries and deny that he groped the customer.

Steph! Omgoodness. I wish I could have been there and saved you from that man! I am so sick and tired of sexual harassment I have prepared a speech and plan to counter the next person that does this to me or anyone I witness. It is NOT OK and you should not have to put up with it. They were wrong, your coworkers, boss and everyone who made you a helpless victim. You have a safe place here and know that you are not alone in your situation and you can speak up. I hate that this happened to you and that was how you were treated. Please take care of yourself and speak up so that these people will know that their 'victims' will shame them and say no. Maybe we can prevent it happening to someone else that way. I'm so sorry Steph. I'm glad you left that place. I support you.

Sorry to hear you got scared. But to be completely honest with you, and please don't take this the wrong way, I get the feeling you overreacted quite a bit. You keep saying he 'basically' groped you. What does that mean, basically? So he didn't really grope you? But then you go on telling us you got sexually harassed. So did he, or didn't he? Assuming he did, all that happened in the end was an old man touching your ass for a split second. By all means, go ahead and get pissed off at him and tell him to fuck off. Maybe even go as far as reporting him to the cops and let them decide the magnitude of his offense. I don't understand why you'd get so scared and emotional, even to the point of crying, though. I dunno, maybe it's just me. But I feel like a reaction should always be in a justifiable proportion to the cause, if you understand what I mean by that. Just my 2 cents.
@darkaquatus7 жыл бұрын
Oh boy, you're one of those progressive feminists who sees a rape culture everywhere you look, aren't you? But leaving that aside, you did not actually bring any arguments to the table. You simply disagreed with me and accused Japan of allowing pretty horrible actions. You better back it up with facts or take it back.
@darkaquatus7 жыл бұрын
anchorgirl1350 I never said that. Stop using strawmen and actually come up with an argument, you smartass. Misrepresenting my position, ignoring my actual points and insinuating that I'm not a decent human being is lower than low. To put it bluntly: you're acting like a progressive leftist. I hope you realize you're only making a fool of yourself like this. Show some dignity, for crying out loud.
@Raff7667 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you dude, more women need to become stronger and not get so emotional especially if its something small like getting touched for 1 second. I really do feel like women kind of overreact to this kind of stuff, in the end the only thing he really did was touch for a split second. Obviously I'm not condoning of such actions and I definitely do not agree with what the old Japanese pervert did, but it's not like the guy physically assaulted her or anything. They just need to learn that its not that hard to just shoo these old Japanese perverts away like you would to a mosquito. There is no real reason to get so scared.
@shanamoens8227 жыл бұрын
It depends on the individual and what kind of things you have been through during childhood. I would completely freak out if someone I don't know - man or woman - grabbed my butt or boobs too. Not because I'm an "entitled millenial" like some people are saying in the comment section, but because I was sexually molested by my mother's boyfriend from when I was 13 - 14. I'm 26 now and still a virgin because intimacy terrifies me. Maybe a few seconds being touched seems little, and with me it was more than a few seconds, it was frequently over a period of months, but I can still understand her reaction. You don't expect something like that to happen, especially not at your workplace. She doesn't seem like she'd given any indication that she was open to that kind of attention. If someone then grabs a rather intimate place on your body, the worry wheel starts running and you start wondering; if he dares to do that, who says he wouldn't dare to go even further than that too. Feminists claiming staring or merely speaking is sexual harrassment can go fly in the highest tree and never come back down. I'm glad that silliness doesn't happen here. I don't like feminists claiming something rape randomly either. As intrusive as my own experience was, even that wasn't rape. Assault or molestation yes, but not rape. Doesn't mean it can't be damaging too. No one should touch someone else's body without permission. I get just as pissed when I hear a man got groped by a woman and people just laugh it off and say it's different. No, it's fucking not. Or worse, when it happens to a boy. Female pedophiles should be taken just as seriously as male pedophiles.

You know now that you mention it I remember an incident way back when I worked for awhile in Japan. Some of the lady staff would wait for us guys to finish work and go home together. They would stand between us in the train. Find it kind of odd so 1 day I asked them. Found out that their bottoms gets pinched a lot if its not blocked by us guys.

i have never seen your vlogs before. So when you started talking and began to shift intonations i was so confused. >.> That work atmosphere sounds very tough to cope with. Time must of passed by so slowly and seems like you felt a bit lonely and overwhelmed. You absolutely made the right choice to quit. I do hope one day you receive a better opportunity over there with more sensible clients/guests and a positive atmosphere. Ill probably visit and maybe work Japan at some point in the next few years since i have studied Japanese for 2 years with a teacher and taking the N-exams. Topcareer shows a lot of research and engineering jobs related to infrastructure available with Japanese proficiency being a big plus.Also my city uni's study program which grants up to $5k to study abroad don't seem to have many applicants so i shall try to my luck for this year, and if not this year i shall keep trying :)

Ever tried martial arts? The confidence gained through understanding Self Defense will prevent most of these situations and you will have the skills to protect yourself when the situation does occur. Thank you for sharing your story. Sorry you had to go through that.

1) people saying that others "don't like me for no reason" are usually the ones to blame for it and not the others 2) one doesn't go to jail for grabbing someone's ass 3) if someone harasses you, do something about it. Tell the person to stop, call the police. Grow up and stop whining.

I don't like how Saudi Arabia works, but I love how no one's harassed over there, no matter what the reason is! They cover themselves completely, they can't wear what they want, but at least they don't have to go through all these safety issues! I've never seen a country as safe as Saudi Arabia, specially for foreigners and strangers/acquaintances!

I feel so bad hearing that, Steph. Im glad your okay and made the decision to quit. Its a quiet sad that you can't really do much in terms of self defence. It would be nice if more could be done. Eg an emergency button underneath the counter table whenever something happens. However, next time something like that happens just scream. Literally SCREAAAAM. It will put him on shock and alert people straight away. Never keep quiet about sexual harassment, ever. People will always target the quiet ones.

This is my first video I saw on your channel, Steph. I read that you were raised in the US. I understand the job where you had this unpleasent experience happened in Japan, right ? Out of curiosity, do you live there now ? How come you didn't continue to stay and study and work in US ?

I can relate to this. I worked at this gas station/restaurant. A coworker came in one night(I worked night shift) and she was really drunk. She thought it would be hilarious to grab me inappropriately but I did not think it was funny. I reported it to the store manager and he did absolutely nothing. No one thought what happened was wrong because it was a girl grabbing another girl.

I remember this Taiwanese drama where a girl gets groped by two guy on the bus and she's too afraid to cry for help because, apparently, remaining quiet on public transport is more important than resisting sexual assault in that society.

i know this feeling steph :( at my work there's this customer that i always hate coming.. i work at a fast food chain and i mostly do the running (i give the orders to the customers) there is this guy who always order his food to go and whenever i hand him the order he always make sure that he touches my hand.. at first i thought it couldnt be helped and i dont want to assume but this has happened more than once already and usually when i hand over an order to a customer they would avoid touching my hand (well most of the customers anyway) but this guy is doing it intentionally. he would grab my hand and look at me intensely. Honestly it disgust me. I told this to my co-workers and supervisors but they just brushed me off... =__= for the time being i just avoid interacting with him whenever he's around but if this keeps on going i might just quit

anyway i sympathize with you. no one should ever be treated this way :(

If you get sexually assaulted, pepper spray them, threaten them, yell, things like that, don't rely on people to protect you, there's not many good people in this world, and such a thing is hard to prove in court if there's no cameras or witnesses. Personally if someone assaults me, they should buy themselves a coffin first, just in case, I don't play games when it comes to my safety.

At a minimum he should have been banished from the store indefinitely. Mgmt should have spoken to him and asked him to leave. You should contact headquarters and inform them of the incident in addition to how it was handled at your place of employment. You should have received some sort of training if your mgr told you it's your responsibility to protect yourself. Providing good customer service includes protecting other customers. Service desk should have stopped what they were doing to ask the man to leave rather than announcing it over the intercom. It might not be the stores responsibility to police but the location is private property and you do have the authority to request that he leave as to avoid any further incidents with other customers.

IDig Ninjas it's Japanese culture, not the specific workplace. Police say the same thing and give excuses
