Why I QUIT Yoga as a Catholic

I can't see how Catholics can safely practice yoga without incurring some damage...I know I did.
First half of the video is my experience with yoga--and why I quit.
Second half of the video are the spiritual dangers I find with yoga, especially: the zen of yoga ≠ the peace of Christ.
In short, stay far away.

WOW...I have no idea how this video ended up on my feed...the KZbin algorithm failed on this one...but I find this to be a quite terrifying reminder of how so many people are slaves to their various mythologies. It shows how primitive we still are as a species that people still believe in this fairy tale garbage. Anyway, I wish you the best, I hope that someday you can escape your indoctrination. Cheers.

Brother, we all are slaves here. You choose your master. Emily chooses her master as Jesus Christ and she serves Him. So do I, and so do many others. If we choose as our master as anything or anyone else that is not Jesus Christ, we will be lost and we will be in hell for all eternity.

I'm Catholic and on board with it, TBTG. I APPRECIATE YOUR THOUGHTS ON YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH YOGA. I'm currently practicing vinyasa yoga about one a week with an instructor and I hit the mat every day religiously as my WOD. And, that's my point. My workout and my worship are two different things. I don't see anything wrong with stretching or bodyweight exercises in a yoga practice.My spiritual work I keep separate. I do,however, appreciate the theological distinctions between Hinduism and Catholicism..and I do agree that it's important to understand that distinction.

Emily ! ... if you deny yourself the ' warm fuzziness ' you got from yoga , what else will you deny yourself in the name of dogma !? Christ wants you to develop the freedom that's unique to YOUR spirit ... with his divine radiance underpinning it ! A world in which everyone worships God identically - in which diversity of expression is wholly snuffed out -- is no world at all ! .... i COMPLETELY subscribe to the idea that restraint & discipline have their place in the context of spiritual development ... but i'm convinced that God , in His infinite wisdom , has left room for feeling good ! ..... ( fyi : i was raised catholic & still feel that the heart of catholicism is close to my own heart , but have also broadened my spiritual outlook to include other approaches to divinity .... )

Hi Mark. Thanks for your comment! A saint once said: "There are as many ways to God as there are people." I agree with you that our journey with/to God is unique to us as individuals. I also agree that feeling good is not a bad thing! In fact, God *wants* us to flourish. He does not, however, want us to get caught in ourselves (and subsequently to forget Him). I find yoga--informed by Eastern spirituality---is *deeply* self-referential. On one hand, yoga considers the self as the source; the individual finds meaning within him or herself and needs to give expression to or connect with that meaning. We don't receive our meaning from God: we create it. And of course, the Christian can't buy this for one second. On the other hand, the source in yoga is also a homogenization of me + others + nature--but there is no one true Triune God ordering the created world who loves me and wants to be in relationship with me. And this is the narrative that gets predominately articulated *within* yoga practice. A narrative without God, a narrative that posits the self AS God, a narrative that is difficult to reject during the practice, especially when it's communicated but not explicitly stated. It is SO GOOD to be attuned to your body and emotions; I think that is what makes yoga so appealing. People are NOT in touch with themselves, and we're seeing the mental/physical affects from this. Yoga is offering some relief for folks. It did for me! However, I realized that being sensitized to myself in a bodily way did *not* have to come through yoga where it was impossible to separate the insidious philosophies (mentioned above) from the actual physical practice. So: stretch, breath, and feel good in this way. Connect to yourself--but don't get carried away with the warm fuzzies, lest our lives become a pursuit of only what makes us feel good. Christ wants our flourishing, yes. But this never comes at the cost of His command: to deny ourselves and follow Him.

@@ciaobella15 your reply is sound & level - headed ... however I would not characterize the various eastern , yoga - centered philosophies as ' insidious ' , or ' deeply self - referential ' ... I would hazard a guess that most yoga practitioners would happily subscribe to the idea that they are endeavoring to awaken the ' divine within ' ... obviously ' their ' god looks much different than ' ours ' ... but using the word ' divinity ' , instead of ' God ' i think helps to level the conceptual playing field here ... once you start decreeing that God ( capital G ) wants this & wants that , you've stepped into the realm of the dogmatic , as opposed to humbly opening up to -- broadening -- one's notion of what god can & does look like for others ... Hello, I am a Hindu and for some reason, I have watched your video. As Hindu, we are not bound to one thing because we know change is constant. So I watched your video and the points you mention are good for your community but I laughed so much at one point "Yoga is dangerous😂😂". BTW it is your life and you can live your life as you want but one thing I know is, Yoga is not dangerous... It is a way to connect our soul to god.

@@rinceradio Hi there, one thing I noticed is if my point was moot, you would ignore this. But you replied to me. I only talked about one point"Yoga is dangerous" not about the Hindu god. You have the right to believe and you did. But yoga is just like a car that connects the soul to god and nothing else. It may be the Hindu God or your God and this only depends upon you. You can use your symbol of god instead of "Namaste"... And you should make one other belief the Hindu Gods even exist and to feel this you should come to India. This along with mindfulness practice is important to understand that it does have its roots in Indian spirituality. However, you can definitely keep your practice secular, but you may have to take care to avoid un-Christian beliefs.

Jesus means to deny the ego self, that strong self will. He also teaches yhe body is a temple, love yourself so you can love your neighbor as yourself. You use the word love here as if its evil love, why cant loving self be of godly love in meaning.
