Why I ran away from Indonesia for being gay (and how I did it)

Turn on CC for Indo sub :)
I talk about my struggles with growing up gay in Indonesia and how I planned my escape in order to be free. I also touch on lgbt issues in kids growing up in religious households. I honestly don't think I would still be here if I didn't do what I did back then... I regret how I did it but at the time, it truly was survival for me.
Also I keep saying in the video that I moved to NY in 2016 but it was actually 2014 so just keep that in mind lol
I wanted to be transparent with you guys for my first video on this channel, it felt like I wouldn't be doing you guys justice by uploading a "cute" couple vlog. Hopefully this video will clarify whatever questions you have about me or my life. I did not disclose a lot of details about what exactly happened with my family because I didn't make this video to spite them, I would like to have a relationship with them in the future.

That's because of the sexual hypocrisy of the society in general of the muslim majority countries like indonesia. If not because of their sexual hypocrisy, sama sex marriage was already very strictly legal in all of indonesia, at all until now, since the indonesian independence.

I’m actually bi, living in Taiwan. Even though it’s legal for gay couple to get marry in Taiwan, my parents are still homophobic. It’s really hurt that every time my parents say “I’m not homophobic, but I don’t want my children to be a gay.” As one of the victim, I just want to give you a huge hug and tell you how amazing you are. Take care.
@YukiTheOkami
@YukiTheOkami 3 жыл бұрын
many parents actually feel that way and are not homophobic not really they are just worred they think if you were straigt wou would be happier and you would have a much easyer life try to ask them calmly what they exactly feel and then you might can explain to them that you yust cant choose who to fall in love with and that you dont care if its a little harder as long as your heart feels as peace just dont yell at them and remember especially bi sexuality is not proper unerstood even by the lgbt comunity so for real just ask them what exactly they are worried about when i outet my self as a trans guy (female to male) my father a little shoked but not cause he was disguisted or anything he asked him self if he raised me wrong (i was raised kinda gender neutral) or if it is cause i dont had a mother and all and he was worred about the operations and all that or that i would change as a human and i really neddet to ask him again and again to figure all that out

And it’s really so sad that many parents are actually like that with their children, and then claim to not be homophobic but literally disown and ignore their children’s sexuality because they don’t want it to be their child.

Listening to your story of what happened to you when your family found out you are gay broke my heart and I cried. I was raised as a Catholic, going to church every Sunday and holy days, attending a Catholic school and my mum was an old fashioned Catholic Irish woman. When she died I was 25 and that's when I stopped going to church. I have 2 beautiful children, daughter and son out of wedlock and I raised them with the help from my brothers and sister as a single parent. My son came out to me about 6 years ago, we were walking along the road we live on and I was so proud of him that I hugged him and told him how much I love him. I still say I love him everyday and how much I'm proud of him. He's my beautiful boy and so are you ❤️ I hope one day your family will say they're sorry for what they did to you and that they were wrong to do what they did to you. I know my mum would have loved my son for being gay because she knew that my brother was gay before she died. If I could I would hug you and say I love you and I'm proud of you for being you 🥰❤️ sorry I prattled on 🥴

This is what you tell them, you look at straight into their eyes and you saying: 1. Religion is about Peace and Mercy of God. 2. Either we're good person or we're the type of a person who put a barriers, why should there need to be a barriers to loves between one another. 3. Nobody should ever feel belittled for whoever they love. 4. I believe that God will please, and embraces with ours' kind and loving spirits. 5. I'm gay, Malaysian-Indonesian, and has been living with my boyfriend in Indonesia for almost 7 years. I haven't come out to anyone. Nobody even suspected me & boyfriend are gays. We never have any idea to come out to anyone else, even to our family, and didnt see the need for it. We're quite happy with our situation right now. Just some view from me to everyone, if you think coming out isnt that important, dont do it. Especially when you think that the negative impacts will be much greater than the positive ones. Its your sexuality, your private matters, no need to share with everybody if you think they wont accept it.

I am sure many people who are going through a situation like that will be inspired by you and hope might come at the end of the tunnel. I am 60, and it was difficult and of course, I hate myself as well and I was so scare to loose the people I loved (my family). I had luck, because I went out to study and, even it took me years to come out (24), I had a wonderful experience, maybe the best one. After so many years, one of the things that make me extremely happy and hopeful is to see the young people being able to create their own true stories and being able to live something that was so difficult at my time. When I see two young men walking holding hands, a smile comes to my face. Thank yo, Yos, and wish you and Max a long a beautiful life together!

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm so sorry for the struggles you've gone through. My Mother once said to me that sometimes you have to go outside of your family to find out who your family really is. Meaning those who support you and love you. Having to speak your truth of who you are can really be hard (in different forms, being gay or in addition to being gay). Just being who you really are takes courage and finally standing up and saying who you are can sometimes disrupt or even ruin family dynamics. It is painful and yet liberating. You can't be who your family wants you to be. You have to be you, or it's suffocating, and you live your life full of regret because you never really got to live. I am so glad for you that you were brave. And by the way, I am a straight Christian and love others just as they are. We are enough, and perfectly made. :)

Idk but maybe it’s for safety reasons, I didn’t hate gay but for my safety i would not try to involve in another people business. Perhaps it’s not because the people who are assaulted was gay. Perhaps it’s because they don’t want to involved with another people problems. Not only in indonesia, you would find that in anywhere. Anyway, yea true it’s hard to live as gay in Indonesia. Because most of people in indonesia are very much religious. You can’t deny that there’s no religion that allowed people to be gay, so probably that’s why being gay in Indonesia was unacceptable. It’s a doctrine that stays for more than centuries. We can’t just hope to change people opinions and traditions in one day right? And isn’t that still same in any country ? There will be always people who are homophobic.

As an artist, I sponsor LGBTQ student scholarships worldwide... one such student was Miko in Indonesia, who is a transgender person, that walked the hallways of an Indonesian University for 5 years dressed as a girl and eventually graduated. As a veteran, I feel we are all connected in LGBTQ activism, something I learned early on in my arrival, of the extensive activism of the veterans before me. You could not have landed in a better place than Canada, with all our rights, but keep in mind, there is always going to be homophobes, as you know full well. Every step we take alive is activism enough, to just survive and love who we are. You are a beautiful couple. Stay optimistic. Happiness is the journey and you will always be loved by so many of your TRUE family in LGBTQ community life. Peace and love to you both always.

Hearing your story brought tears to my eyes. I'm not going to go into my son's story very much here but it brought back those days with my son. I had no idea my son was gay but from day one I excepted that he was. It was a shock for me but all I wanted was for him to be happy. He had known for a few years he was gay but didn't want to tell us because of the way his Dad would take it. About three years later we lost our son and my world was forever not the same without him...It's been several years now since he's been gone and the hole in my heart is still very painful. He was in a bad relationship for those three years and it breaks my heart that he never got to experience that one true love to spend his life with and get his loving fullfilling ending with. I'm so glad that your life turned around and you found Max for your happily ever after. I wish my son could have had that. Can't continue this but I am happy that I recently found your channel. I must admit that it is hard living as a lesbian in Indonesia. There are times where people will start talking bad just because ure gay especiall in senior high school, it was very terrifying. I remember i always planned to study undergraduate overseas and not coming back since junior high school, but I couldnt do that. And now I have the chance to go out finally (im a 2nd year undergraduate student) ill spend my time wisely there. I always imagined myself with the lgbtq+ flag in the lgbt parade, it will be satisfying for me to finally feel the freedom. I would like to run away from my family and this country too.. bcs I dont think I can live life to the fullest here.. My mom is a psychiatrist and she knew about this but all shes just denial about me being gay.. she knew that i was depressed but she just gave me anti depressant for months and my family is very religious.. all i can do is just pretend im going out for the sake of my education, its hard bcs it makes me feel guilty...

“And growing up I hated myself for it, and I hated being gay so much.” that sentence hurt my heart. I was raised in a religious family. And as I got older I started to question religion. No one should ever hate themselves or be made to feel guilty or ashamed of who their true being is. Sometimes we like to look for answers & guidance outside of ourselves & that could be very dangerous because doing so leaves our minds and spirits exposed & vulnerable to being fed poison. The only place to find answers & guidance is from within. No one knows your soul better than yourself. I’m sorry that you had to leave your family & home to feel free. But I am happy that you were brave enough to choose yourself & put your happiness first. That does not make us selfish it makes us incredibly strong. Sending so much love, & prosperity your way. ♡

Only wish i have is that he finds his true love. (And get me some grandkids, if possible. Biological, adopted, i dont care!
