AN EX-MEMBER of the Amish community has opened up about why she left the religious group. Misty Griffin currently happily resides in Pasadena, California with her husband, however she had an incredibly strict and difficult childhood where her parents enforced an Amish-style life. After Misty attempted to run away from home, the family moved into an Amish community. But after three years of living as an Amish woman, Misty was molested by the bishop of the community. After enduring months of abuse, she made the decision to leave after living in the community for three years. An updated edition of 'Tears of the Silenced' is available for preorder now: amzn.to/2KZRtwx

Rising Stars I struggled with the Amish system for over 5 years till I had a friend of mine help me out. If it wasn't for him I don't know where I'd be today. My family is Amish except 1 brother. My dad seems to understand salvation and has a problem with the Amish system. Then at the same time he works the way they want him to. Here recently they had a family reunion and he forbid the family from letting me know they're going to have it. It's just things like that, that you really find out who your true friends are. I call my church group, my family.

There's nothing Christian about being Amish. They believe that their "works" (what they wear, the rituals they keep, the things they do) are what saves them. Not the grace of God, not the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Christianity states that people are saved by believing on the sacrifice Jesus made - not by their own works, not by their own "good". The Amish keep their people in a state of fear/compliance on this basis alone. They are NOT Christians. It's very, very sad.

If you don't follow the old testament at all then I'm assuming you don't follow the ten commandments as they are in the old testament. You may like to focus on the happier hippy Jesus, but that doesn't change the fact the old testament is immoral and inaccurate. Even the new testament is inaccurate in its supernatural claims. There is no evidence to support any supernatural claim in either old or new testament. Do you have any evidence for your god claim, or supernatural claims?

Johnson Fernandes Why follow the commandments if they are from the old testament? Why not also stone adulterers? That's from the same book. I agree you should believe whatever gives you peace, but only if it doesn't contradict with things that have already been proven, and only if your belief does not infringe on others rights like christianity does.

In her book (which is a good read) it says she was not born Amish. As Misty says in the video, her stepfather (also not Amish) was very controlling and abusive and part of his abuse was making his wife and stepdaughters behave as if they were Amish. Then when Misty was a teenager she and her sister were sent to live with an actual Amish community, until she was finally able to break free.

Misty has opened up about her life, and about abuse. Her parents live outside an Amish community. Her story is real. So was the abuse. I know the community in which her parents live. Have sat in their home, and never realized what they grew up in. It made me horribly sad to learn all this. We never fully know what someone's home is, or how they are raised. I am thankful she was able to break free.

I grew up around a lot of Amish. They must not have been this strict because they were allowed to go English at 16. They had from 16 until whenever to decide if they would stay English or join church and be baptized into the Amish. If they were never baptized they can not be shunned. So if they decided to be English, their parents may not be happy about it, but they won’t be shunned. My son’s father use to be Amish, he is currently living English. I’ve never heard of a child molestation case within the Amish and I practically lived along side them, but I’m so sorry that had to happen to this woman. The Amish are veryyyy hypocritical ! But I know someday there won’t be anymore Amish. They already are starting to use vehicles more than horse and buggy. They have cell phones, vehicles in their names. I even worked for one that had a tv in his shop. Their lifestyle won’t last forever

Brittany Reeder I agree w u. This vid is about a psycho step dad who dressed them up ...they weren't born Amish or grew up Amish. Who knows what kind of cult he sent her to. I've been around Amish forever and it's nothing like this. Men interact w outsider men and the same for women. You don't find married Amish men talking to women...they have strict rules. But they're fine talking w outsiders of the same sex. They all have the right to leave at 16... some do, some don't..some go and come back. The teens drink more than we do! --they just do it on the dl. I'm sorry for what this girl went thru but this is anotherBarcroft scammy vid...they're mixing culty pedos with real Amish and spreading lies. For the record she would have never been allowed in an Amish church without proof she'd been baptized and raised in an actual Amish church..fact check it. I'm not calling her a liar and I feel bad she was abused, but it was a cult not actual Amish

Every religion is a manipulation of people's mind. There is a higher energy which is God but it's not oppressive. It's the man making other people slaves by using a bible or whatever. We are here on earth to be free, to enjoy the beautiful things in life. I'm glad she's free now, it's her earthly life she deserves to live it the way she chose, not somebody else's bilief
@stephaniepalladino4782
@stephaniepalladino4782 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry but what are you basing this belief on? I ask because I grew up in a new-age home... I was taught that we are " all one" that there's a higher energy, that we are free to do whatever we want as long as we don't harm anyone, etc.... The thing that always got me was that this belief was based upon nothing substantial - just peoples feelings. There was no core, or creed for why those ideas were supposed to be truths - it was all about whatever feels good to our intuitions... and not about any sort of proven authority. Do you know that there is a difference between religion, and being a Christian? Religion involves the rituals people partake in, to justify their own goodness, to believe they are worthy, that their works can atone for their sins.... Real Christianity is simply believing in Jesus's sacrifice on the cross, and placing your trust in his sacrifice. Knowing that we are all sinners, and that Jesus who led the perfect life, is the only covering for our sins.

You're so right and that's what I try and tell people all the time. Religion is man made.. Simply believing in god and following his teaching are two very different things. From my experience the people i've met in churches are vile people.. I do not trust them especially the bishops.

If only all religious people had that mindset. But unfortunately 99% of them don't and will go out of their way to try to force their beliefs on others, even going as far as voting to do so, which is sad and the main reason why I think religion is a disease. A disease that I full heartedly believe that every human being should have the right to inflict upon themselves, if they so wish , but a disease nonetheless.

These sites will tell you everything you should know before you comment on the rank and file. They are mostly good and kind people, it’s their organization with their 8 men of their governing body who make their rules. The pedophilia is absolutely rampant throughout their organization and they’re unable to conceal it any longer. Their members aren’t allowed to research independent sources about their true history which leads them into their beliefs they hold today. They can now accept blood fractions whereas they could not for decades. What about all the people who’ve died bc of their no blood policy? If they’d been alive long enough they too could’ve had a transfusion that would save their lives and at least it would’ve been their choice not 8 men in New York’s decision. Please visit these sites I’ve noted above and realize that being in a cult cuts you off completely to the real world.

God bless you! I worked with an abuse victim in Tennessee. The abuse in the community is HUGE problem that is out of control. An abuser repents before the congregation MUST be forgiven if they confess and the abuse can never be spoken of again. There are many wonderful people but there is also rampant abuse

Having just finished her book, I'm a little confused, (or she is), in the book the aunt she speaks of is her step-father's sister, not his aunt, (her aunt). Her experiences were SO horrific I almost didn't finish reading it. Just an unbelievable level of torture and torment, and that was BEFORE she went to the Amish community. It was something of an 'upgrade' to live in the Amish community compared to the absolute evil of her mother and step-father. That is, until she went to stay in the 'Bishop's' household as a maid. An amazing story, very well told.

these people were not amish they were a cult. Most Amish nowadays do have some connections with the outside world.There are three types of Amish: Old Order Amish, New Order Amish and Swartzentruber Amish. This "Amish" cult might be more like the Swartzentruber Amish. A lot of Old Order and New Order Amish have telephones, solar powered homes, refrigerators,indoor plumbing,and some even allow cell phones. They do not live like people would have in the 1800s.And they definitely do NOT think that by dressing like that and not having all modern conveniences that they are saved. They believe salvation only comes through Jesus Christ. What's in your heart is what counts,not the way you dress. A lot of people laugh and mock when they see them,as if they are aliens from another planet. They are just one of MANY different cultures in the world and deserve to be treated with respect just like anybody else. ALL LIVES MATTER. It doesn't matter what you look like. I know all about the amish because I am Amish myself.

Noonie57 -- what break do you need ?? They are a cult. Following their traditions will Not get anyone to heaven. But they claim those traditions must be followed to please God. My friends who grew up Amish say they believe they have a special standing with God cause of their lifestyle. They are taught to always make a good presentation to the outsiders that they have it together and to make a good appearance to outsiders. Many are gentle but plenty have cheated us. Heck the one yelled at me so bad and get this -- she trespassed on my property. Hypocrites.

Not to lessen this person's experience but I was sexually abused in the "outside world" many times by many different people. When there's the potential case of abuse inside of religions, it always has this kind of focus as if it only goes on inside religions and the outside world is safe. Huh??? I was abused by my father, my stepfather, my mother (who set me up in abusive situations), my dad's neighbor, a massage therapist and a bunch of older men who were on the lookout for teenage girls who weren't being cared for by their parents. Everyone could see how I was struggling but no one did anything. No one offered to help. I felt completely trapped. I had nowhere to go. I married a military man when I was 17 just to get the army's assistance to pay rent. I was taught to be submissive and did not report the abuse. I was afraid what would happen to me. I knew many other young women in similar situations. Her story needs to be told. But it's such a popular story because our culture loves to act superior to other religions/cultures and act like these kind of things don't happen in ours but actually it's much much worse!
@gardenofroses197
@gardenofroses197 4 жыл бұрын
The problem with sexual abuse in cults specifically is that children are raised being taught only one point of view, not having access to information and outside support, sometimes having little education in general. The abuse is therefore normalized since they have nothing to compare it to. These people are often not allowed to live on their own even as adults, which keeps them under the control of the leaders. Escaping abuse in the "outside world" is hard enough, but being abused within a religious system can make it even harder. Communes are the worst, obviously. It's a shame that even in this land of opportunity, some people live in a cycle of abuse like that and some never get out. Children of all backgrounds, religious or not, should have a chance in life. That is why we all should take it upon ourselves to watch for the warning signs and not turn a blind eye to any sort of evil.

What I've found to be true about all these documentaries where people leave their religious upbringing is that, everyone isn't cut out for a religious lifestyle. There are countless people in the world and our views are not going to be the same in all aspects of living. People change religions, social circles, countries, lifestyles and whatever they want when they're ready. As a Muslim, we call this "predestination". I don't know what others may refer to it as, maybe they consider it to be "fate". All religious leaders believe their way is the best. Find what works for you and do that.
