I was 31 when I started law school and 34 when I finished. I enjoyed my time in law school immensely. I had been a practicing acccountant for ten years prior to law school. I went to law school as an academic pursuit and I had no desire to practice law and sacrifice my life on the altar of partnership track billable hours. Instead, I was blessed to get a job as a college professor teaching tax and business law, and getting a JD gave me instant credibility in academia. And last year, at age 57, I was blessed to get an LL.M. in tax. So for me, law school put me on the career path I enjoy to this day. That's my $0.03.

Thanks for sharing your story! I was a legal assistant for 10 yrs (while getting my master in public health part time). I even studied data science to be more marketable, but it has been HARD to break into public health (with law experience, you get pigeonholed). However I got an amazing paid internship due to my legal experience in the WBG's global health office. It really opened my eyes how rare and needed law professionals are needed in public health. I'm biting the bullet and giving law school admissions a chance at 36. Your story is so relatable and gives me hope.

i don't know why people hate the skilled trades (electrician, plumber, mechanic, etc.) so much. i work in a trade, and also sell home cooked food. i make $120k a year (pre-tax), and have zero student loan debt. i thank God i never cared about things like prestige and status. i was always a dumb person, so college was never for me anyway. i'm glad and grateful things worked out for me tho.

I think the trades are great, and advocate that young kids graduate HS a year early, get a trade, and then go for an undergraduate degree. My life experience has led me down an undraditional path. I own my own mobility-based massage therapy and personal training business, having returned to this field after a 12 year layoff from it while I was doing executive management operations. I set myself up to work this business, help people with their mobility issues, while I prep to take the LSAT. I've attained many of my life goals, and my youngest child is close to HS. I finally have the time and freedom to study law. I've always been driven to public defender work, and believe that's my an end goal drive for me. I've attained my creature comforts as an older adult, I have the house and the kids are grown. Now I can focus on fulfilling my ultimate passion of helping the indigent.

you may always be breaking ur back to make your living. health is wealth! when you take some of these more academic routes wether it be medical doctor, juris doctor, engineer its gonna keep paying years down the line. and the skill that you actually have is the most valuable among other trades. people will always get sick or need someone to defend them. and these jobs are paying upwards of 200k. even tho it takes time and it sucks it really does pay off in the end.

Thx Evan. My lifelong dream was always to be a lawyer actually an Attorney. But now these days I decided to take the Juris Masters in Healthcare Law route (at Emory University here in GA) instead of going for a JD at Emory. I work with disability and helping people prepare their Social Security disability applications and if people are denied, I appeal their cases, I show up in court to represent them etc…and I get paid directly from the Social Security administration when I win their case (and I don’t need a law degree) don’t need to be a lawyer to do this typo of work. I just have to have a BS degree so anyway, to further continue with my profession in my field I’m going for my JM in Healthcare Law degree, and what’s best for me instead of JD😊

I’m conflicted because at 24 years old I’m seeing that most of life for the average person is mundane and hard anyway; I don’t want to switch career paths in a futile attempt to avoid that. People say the same stuff about coding that you say about law except for how you receive your education. But the rest is the same. “Yeah you get good money, but it’s not worth it unless you really love it bro.” I work with someone at the library right now who switched from coding to be a librarian and he pretty much said what you’re saying about his decision. I understand where you’re coming from though and I appreciate the insight from someone who has experience with this stuff. I really relate to your experiences coming out of undergrad.

Very good points, but there are different types of law than just criminal lawyers. IP and Contract is huge right now. Criminal lawyers get paid the least out of all, unless you work for a big firm that specializes in defense. Real estate attorneys get paid pretty well too. Many firms and companies hire outside of the top 25 or whatever. Just do the work and get experience and have a plan.

Habe allerdings was ganz anderes gewählt. Naja. Danke jedenfalls für deine Antwort. Def better to code or do something related to health care, imo. Physicians assistant or something like that. But, law school... unless you're trying to open your own firm or really want to be a lawyer, it's not worth it. You def made the right choice. Law school is so stressful! Finals that require you to memorize so much crap. And the bar exam requires you to memorize even more crap. After all that, there is a struggle. Many lawyers end up doing document review or some average pay job. You def made the right choice. Sign up for Lynda.com to help you with coding bootcamp. Stay active on github after your bootcamp. Keep practicing at least 2 hours a day while you're looking for a job. Github matters a lot.

Only go to law school if you get admitted to a top 20 law school and attend a top 50, have worked very closely with attorneys in the field you want to enter actually doing the work, and continue to work while in school. Don't pay for law school yourself. I went to a top 50 but was rejected by the best, I worked in a law related field but I was not working directly under lawyers doing law work, I didn't keep working and I paid for school my self. Bottom line for future students: Basically no one gives two shits that you attended FSU Law or Chapel Hill for that matter if you're expecting 1980's era pay (corrected for inflation). Unless you graduate from a top school, the chance that law will give a stellar ROI is a dismal prospect just like Architecture has been. You've law grads today in the lower tier of top 25 law schools making $50k for their first job which is the equiv. of two California teens working part-time at McDonalds. 2nd tier schools? May as well work fast food.

Also, and no one ever talks about this, in law school you can't appeal a grade - or it's extremely frowned upon. And the grading is subjective, because tests are 90% essays. Imagine taking a subjectively-graded ESSAY test and not being able to appeal your grade... In a setting where people are being taught how to litigate and appeal things!

Summing up your reasons not to go to law school: you can't live out your porn fantasy, loneliness, too much reading lol. Oh and that you can spend less time doing something else and get paid the same or more. However, to that last point, what if you do not like doing any of those other jobs your talking either or any job. One of the biggest problems in life is to find a job that you can really enjoy because most jobs, no matter what they pay, do not seem like anything you will probably truly enjoy. Also,, You know I've heard a lot of people say not to go to law school unless you know you want to be a lawyer and do that job, but how can you really know you want to be a lawyer? especially as a first generation college student/professional school student and not knowing any lawyers. The only way to know is to become a paralegal first I guess, but then it will take you even more time to become a lawyer. But also, paralegals do not get to do all the things lawyers do. I dont know im just thinking while writing.

Crim Justice? Unless you can get into the top 10, forget law, and get another undergrad in electrical engineering and go from there, and don't let anyone in your family major in something like crim. justice ever again. Otherwise you're just flirting with the poor house and years of debt.

You can see why this guy didn’t make it. His argument here is don’t be a lawyer do computer science. Because he’s just chasing money and prestige. His view of law is skewed and so is his law school motivation. His examples of the one day you aren’t prepared in class are obviously him trying to cover up he was rarely ever prepared for class.

I am at the end of my Bachelor's in English and I don't know what to do next. Nothing appeals to me anymore.... I looked for all the options and found law was one of them so I thought why not but the more I am understanding about the law less I'm liking it. Anything to suggest? Would be helpful.
@EvanRamani
@EvanRamani 2 жыл бұрын
Suggestions. look into your options some more. You gotta pick the path or else you won't be too into it. An English bachelor is like a communication bachelor(what is what I had) but not as bad. The options are few with English. There is like...teaching in high school, which is def not for everyone. Medical and tech are always in demand. Also, UX design is super hot right now. Best of luck! With the work you put into law school, you literally can do anything with less effort. But, if you want to be a lawyer, there are no other options. :)

@@EvanRamani thanks. Nope not looking forward to law anymore. I need to see what's more left. In my country, system doesn't work like that after Bachelors (of Humanities) a student can't enter the science field. The field Science needs to be choose after 10th grade and For respective Engineering/Medical Nationwide exams are held which after qualifying one gets the seats in the medical of engineering institute. So I don't pretty much have options after Bachelors in English

You should preface the video telling WHAT law school you attended. Because passing the California bar (congrats) doesn't mean anything if you graduated from some tier 4 law school at the top of your class. If you graduated from Yale, Columbia, Stanford, Harvard, Chicago, Berkeley or the like at the top of your class, then you're probably not going to struggle getting a job, and a lot of your class mates will start at over $100k. You're not going to even remotely have the same job prospect experience if you graduate from Kansas State University or Southern University Law Center whether you're at the top of your class, wrote for the law review, etc.. it's just not the same world/rigor. Long story short - law is for the most part worthless as a career anymore if you're not at a top of the crop school. You mentioned 140 LSAT! What! That's like failing. You need at least a 160 LSAT to get into the better "average" schools, and that kind of score won't even get you in to the best schools usually which have a median LSAT in the 170's. Law as a career is almost as bad today as Architecture. They're practically dead anymore as high paying careers. Look at the LSAT scores for the top PUBLIC LAW SCHOOLS! That'll wake you up to reality ;)

It's also interesting. I agree with don't go to law school. On the other hand, it does help some people for networking and connections. I enjoyed the experience. It was a change of pace that I needed at the time. As minorities, I feel like we're in a different boat sometimes! Just being honest lol. For me, the tuition is why i tell students to think about going. It's way too high at a lot of schools to justify the expense. I've started to see this conversation more, which is a good thing.
