@@terrycarlton6991 My non commercial Ego trimmer can go for 45 minutes with. 2 Ah battery. I went with Ego after my brand new brand name gas mower didn't start the third year. After that I was done with gas. Paid $470 for my 21 inch Ego push mower. This is year four and no problems. Put a battery in and go to work. Never going back to gas.

I think it’s a heat issue with the motor cutting out to protect the battery. I’ve experienced this cut out brush cutting on a hot day. I have a breather and then get going again. On cooler days the motor does not cut out. I have a multitool set and I like it. There are a lot of negative comments about Ego tools here. I like them. I like the fact I can leave a tool for a month or two in the knowledge it will start first press of the trigger when I want to use it. Contrast this to hours wasted trying to start little petrol engines. I also like using these Ego tools in the early morning in the knowledge they are not annoying anyone. If Ego makes an electric off-road bike I’m going to buy one.

I'm not entirely sure how EGO designs their thermal shut offs but it could be a faulty thermal sensor that while at a certain temperature, below the actual shut off, either short power surges due to fluctuating load or even a partial short in the sensor, causes momentary thermal shut off. If it were a true thermal shut off, the tool would shut off once it reached a temperature then and not be able to be reactivated until the tool or battery cooled off to a determined point, there are a lot of ways to do this so i can't really speculate on exactly which components could've failed resulting in this issue, however I believe that the most likely is that either the battery or tool it self had a malfunctioning thermal sensor.

I absolutely LOVE ALL MY EGO PRODUCTS, I have the Weed eater and I live in Florida where my Acre Yard Grows like a Jungle, and I put my Ego through the Ringer, and it has never failed me.... and after a Hurricane came through and tore my Yard up, it REALLY GOT A WORKOUT... You just got a lemon, it happens....

My multi tool strimmer cuts out if I'm going hard and heavy in long grass. Did you find out why? If it the battery overheating. This never happens with the other attachments. Only the strimmer.

i have the same sting weed eater and i had the same problem. i ended up keeping it and after 2 months of usage it worked perfectly fine and ran like it was intended.

Ok Side note from people saying you cutting the whole lawn with the trimmer. I actually had to do that in a rental property because, I couldn't use the lawnmower because they had so much trash in the back yard. I ended up using the milwaukee trimmer. I had the cut outs and what not, but the lawn was much larger in size, and the grass was much much taller. I took it as an overload thing. my battery didn't blink. but the motor gave out in the same fashion as yours did. that ego one is much better though, much faster than the milwaukee, geez. even then I gotta say I think it's the motor over loading, because it started right up after it happened. Still ridiculously impressive that you were able to do that kind of work anyway.

I had to take over yard maint from my husband. Hadn't done mowing or any other yard work in 42 years! I hate gas because of the fuel and oil, noise and exhaust so I researched battery options. I love EGO mower, blower and weed eater. Hedge trimmer will be next purchase. I just wish it wasn't so darned expensive!

I couldn't see depending on equipment that doesn't come from a servicing dealer. In this case it really shows the importance of that. I don't care if it is marketed as commercial grade, if it comes from a non-servicing retailer then it is a no-go for me

Trimmer has a timeout feature,when/if trigger is locked on/or extended run with no pauses,it automatically shuts down after set period of time.

I wondered that as well. It would make sense that it cuts off to save the battery and for safety in case the trigger somehow got stuck accidentally. It seemed to restart as soon as the trigger was released and repulled. I do agree that it should be noted somewhere in the manual (if it isn’t already) so the operator does not think it is a failure on the tool’s part. I’d be interested to know how long it runs for before tripping the timeout feature. 🤔

First of all, I want to commend you on how well you've responded to, and handled, criticism here. Very professional and you seem like a good guy. Secondly, there are a number of positive trade-off's for using electric vs gas (no buying gas and oil, no mixing fuel, no tune-ups, low noise level, no exhaust, etc), and probably 99% of even commercial users, aren't going to run handheld equipment on full throttle like that for extended periods of time without letting up a bit for a second or two here or there. That said, maybe you fall into that 1%, so you've got to do what works for you man. For me, I love my EGO gear.

If I understood you right, they only reached out to you after you posted a video? So before that you were getting the “support” from them that joe-average customer would get, as in, not much. It was only after they discovered you were showing their products on KZbin that they contacted you?

That is correct. I did reach out to them late 2018 after seeing their stuff at GIE, but the contact I got from that was the one that was very hit or miss, either not replying at all or sending information that didn't address my concerns. After the video went live someone different from customer support reached out wanting to help, but once I told them I had already returned it I didn't get any followup since they couldn't really track down the unit. I actually called back a week or two later to see if they had found it, got transferred to their voicemail and never any return call.

I hasn't seen a battery operated weedeater this strong, i don't have any battery operated lawn care equipment but if that works for two hrs straight and the price is right, i might consider getting one. How much that cost and how many batteries does it come with. Tks I enjoyed the video If the amount of money a homeowner spends on gas is equal to buying batteries i think this should be a good weedeater.

I bought a kobalt 80v trimmer at an estate sale last year and it was a very good trimmer. Light weight and powerful. Got me through one season. Just stopped working yesterday. Battery is still good just refused to move.

If you just bury a string trimmer in high grass it creates a big stress on the unit. I was taught that you need to let the edge of the trimmer doing the cutting, so approach the tall thick grass from the edge, or slowly cut it down to size in several sweeps.

Yeah I got the entire Ego multi head range a year ago for Xmas. The head unit just cuts out and stopped working with brushcutter. Had to go to warranty repair on 3 separate occasions. The 3rd time Ego replaced the unit. Hopefully the new unit works OK.

I like this platform, But I think you may have dove into a new line of products head first. Saying that In the future I would recommend getting the Ego multi tool set and some big batteries (for that commercial work) and i promise it won't disappoint. My favorite setup is the pole prooner with a 2.5 AH battery. Makes the tool very light. Also it seems that trimmer has one speed to it. The multi tool have a 1&2 switch on top of the throttle housing conveniently placed for your thumb to do a switch for higher speeds. Of course with smaller batteries you have to use them wisely. I agree with the handheld blower it's not really powerful enough but still works well in areas where you can't get a backpack gas such as behind the bushes

You make a great point about the multi tool set. I think that makes a lot more sense than the commercial platform they offer. The trimmer has a variable throttle, but full speed is the only way to run it on a yard like that! :) Very helpful comment, thank you for sharing!

Just saying maybe you should have gave it another try. I understand that this system may not have been good for you, but to give it a full accurate review you needed to see if that one was just defective. I own a landscaping company and we have been using the ego products for the last few years. Same blowers, string and regular trimmers, edger and mowers and they have been Absolutely AWESOME TO US!! We do use it commercially and have never failed. That's my user experience and understand yours can be different. Was just making a observation from the video and then reading the comments. Thinking that is why people are not really understanding. You also took that trimmer through and test that even most professionals aren't going to encounter. I appreciate the review I really do, I look to become a reviwer myself. But in my opinion it fell short of a accurate test and suffered from more of a frustration aspect because other things evolved. I personally have never had to reach out to ego because everything has always worked so I can't speak on customer service. And this comment is not to bash or anything like that, I really was just writing what I was thinking. Thanks for the video though. I am a subscriber appreciative for the content I can learn from.

Also I have the newer hart power head battery powered string trimmer works well if it hits a hard spot it stops completely and starts right back up because the motor doesn't have to turn power for it

I completely understand being a bit apprehensive about keeping a unit that is $3,000.00 after the communication issues that you had with them, and the failures while running the unit. I was still pretty impressed with the work that it put out! I hope that you got a unit that you are happy with. I am curious if EGO offered to send you a new unit to have you do another review, would you do it?

I had invested into the string trimmer as well. I did not have the issue you had but after just under one year the variable speed was having issues. Actually my warranty replacement had similar variable speed issues at just under one year. I had intended to get a second warranty replacement but it was so close to the end of the warranty period that Ego decided to wait until after warranty was up to do anything about it and claimed it was out of warranty even though I contacted them before warranty was up. I currently let the string trimmer collect dust. I still use the backpack battery with the adapter that works with their non commercial line for when I need to use the blower during fall cleanups. I also use it with the snowblower. Otherwise I do not use the backpack battery much. I kinda feel abandoned because the recent announcement of the second generation commercial tools don’t even use the commercial battery.

@@CopperCreekCuts They have an adapter to allow the commercial battery to work with their non commercial tools already and they also have a backpack for commercial use that works with the non commercial batteries. This backpack will plug into the first generation commercial tools. I have the adapter to for the commercial battery and it works on nearly every tool which is great. I even use it with the snowblower which Ego does not recommend.

My neighbor has the trimmer and the hand held blower for most of the summer. He seems to be happy with it. The system makes no sense to me as I’m am already vested in the echo line for the past three years. I bought a trimmer / edger combo kit about three years ago. I have added the brush cutter, limb saw, and a trimmer for bushes. I think I have only around $800 in the whole setup and have done enough work to pay for them. I don’t do enough yards to justify spending that kind of money on the battery line. I do use the Ryobi hedge trimmer (18 volt) quite a bit. It’s light weight and I’ve been vested in that line for the past 15 years. The trick is using the larger batteries. The echo hedge trimmer is heavy, but I use it on bigger jobs. I can carry a Ryobi drill, saws-all with extra battery on my truck that has saved me a number of times. I try to come prepared. Keep making those videos.

Hey mate that was smart you returned it ,ive got mine repaired once now cost me 100 of dollers to get it shipped to repairer and back and that issue gets even worse now it cuts out every 5 seconds ,worst thing i ever bought!!

without any knowledge of the system, it seems to me to be a safety issue, because they stated it was defective. I wonder if there was a problem with the battery not sending enough juice under constant load, or it's a thermal cutoff sort of thing... and if the battery's having problems then you've got a giant roman candle strapped to your back if it starts to overheat. Lithium fires cannot be put out with water. Now my thoughts here, is that this so called "defective product" was in fact not defective at all, and they were just covering up for their lack of ability to deliver a quality product, and inability to answer technical questions about something they should know inside and out.

I had a feeling you would not end up using this stuff long term based on your previous videos and comments lol. Like I’ve said before I think these can be great supplemental tools for certain situations, and great stuff for a single lawn maintained regularly, and the stuff is zero maintenance for a homeowner. I think the price is still a bit crazy on cordless, especially when you factor in large batteries and battery replacement after they fail. And you are absolutely right about ergonomics. People don’t give ergos enough thought. Even as a homeowner, switching from a curved shaft to an echo straight shaft trimmer was the best thing for my back. I can’t believe how long I went using a curved shaft all these years! Great video once again, take care!

These are battery powered units designed for normal usage triming around houses and edging driveways. I dont know why you would expect a battery operated handheld trimmer to mow large thick sections . You realize their mowers have multiple batteries and can handle such continuous heavy loads such as you were subjecting the 1 battery trimmer to.

Sure, makes it quicker. Just sacrifices safety, adds wear and tear on the motor, and in some places you get to accidentally bumping the head because of the terrain and it creates 6 feet of line! :)

I guess maybe it shouldn’t cut out like that, but it was dense weeds and being run wide open. It makes me think letting off the throttle and going again isn’t that big of deal. It would have definitely taken more time to re fuel once, and you didn’t have to endure the 2 stroke fumes. Sounds like a worthy trade off to me.

I have a ego trimmer and its fantastic. But you never run a trimmer full throttle constantly. My batter died on mine at the 32 months mark. Their warranty is 36 months. They shipped me a new battery that same day. They just had me do a few checks to make sure it wasnt the charger. Once that was done they said they would ship a battery. Had the new battery a year now and its working fine. I have over half an acre fenced and the single charge does it all.

The problem you had was not from over heating of the battery. When I first got my ego trimmer I had a battery over heat, it was 100 degrees. The trimmer would not restart until the battery cooled down. It seems like your charging system was defective as you mentioned. I would have taken it back and got another new Ego Commercial Battery System and the trimmer to test. But I personally do not think the Ego Products are made for commercial lawn work. They are only made to run for 30-60 minutes on one charge

This is a timely video because I have just started using my EGO backpack blower again. The reason? The lock on my blower rack won't unlock and I can't get my Husqvarna 570 out of the rack! lol. And of course the greenwise rack is theft deterant so the lock is guarded against bolt cutters. But anyway, my EGO backpack blower is still running like new and it's probably 2 years old now. I get about 6 yards out of it before I have to go recharge. It's never cut off on me like that and I am VERY happy with it. NOW, the system you have there, oh my. Just the cord would drive me nuts! Then the camera on your head and the long pants on a hot day... I would return it too. Eventually everything will be electric, or nuclear, but it's not quite there yet.

I'm really asking because you can get an EGO string trimmer, 5 AH battery, and charger, for $300. Are you saying the backpack system is $2700?? Where is the $3000 cost? The date on this vid is Sept, 2019, I would say that's the "version2" cycle for EGO products. In December, they released "version3." New mower (the one with 2 blades), and the products seems updated (the 650cfm blower is a new upgrade), though it's not obvious at first for other products. I'd like to think they're improving their products because I got a full set of EGO gear in Dec 2019 and while I haven't had to use it much (I live in Orlando), all of it has worked perfect (edger, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, mower, and blower). Granted I don't use it in a commercial setting, but so far it's all been up to all of my expectations as a life-long gas powered owner.

They have a full commercial line. The $3000 is $1300 for the battery, $400 for each of the three tools, another hundred or two for the charger, then tax. I think you might be referring to homeowner products. There is no commercial EGO mower.

@@CopperCreekCuts Since I prefaced my post by saying I wasn't aware they even had a commercial line, uh.. yeah.. I was talking about the residential/homeowner line. When I think "commercial hardware" for power tools, I think two things: 1> It needs to be strong enough to last more than an occasional use. And 2> it needs to perform well 8 hours a day. I think the EGO line **CRUSHES** the "powerful enough" category. It's not 2004 anymore. Battery tools are every bit as powerful as gasoline ones, despite what so many dinosaurs have said in this thread. Their problem is battery LIFE. The EGO line will easily give you an hour, and I don't think it's unreasonable to assume someone will get another to swap out to extend that into the 2-4 hour range. But I don't think the gear is ready for true commercial, 10-14 hour days the way gasoline is. The backpack is mostly just for COMFORT, it's still just their 7.5 aH battery (is the 10.0 aH out yet??). Hopefully that day comes sooner than later, but we're not quite there yet. Good luck with your business. Hopefully you can switch to electric soon.

I've always noticed battery powered tools have this thing of intermittent on/off .... I have Porter Cable sawzall, drill, skill saw, light kit and the sawzall in particular consistently cuts out HOWEVER in defense of cordless I do believe it has something to do with one of or both of two things 1) heating of battery or once on lower spectrum of charge or both. (Not always though of course)

Can the backpack be used with the residential lineup equipment? Also, seems like even with the residential equipment a few people had the same issue which seems to be an overload protection safety feature. I don't own Ego or any battery equipment, well I have a Greenworks battery chainsaw, but I'm looking at getting a battery trimmer and Ego is looking like the way I'm going. I'm just looking through KZbin videos about battery trimmers but not finding many comparison videos. I understand having a commercial business how you need your stuff reliably working and lasting to get work done in your case I'm thinking perhaps it requires more technique to offset the safety feature, if that really is the problem. Perhaps intermittently coming off the trigger or something you aren't use to because of being accustomed to gas not having such safety design. Anyway, thanks for the video. I continuing my search, oh and I'm not in the business I'm just looking for personal home use but curious if the backpack would work on residential side cause that would be a great option.

Yeah with 730 bucks I can get a echo combo power head a 580 blower a spool of trimmer line new air and fuel filter for a Kawasaki 730 motor 2 stroke oil mix and a gas can. Electric just isn’t there yet. And the price is ridiculous still.

Yea my Kobalt 80 volt cuts off all the time. I have to eject and reinstall battery to get it going. string head is horrible but it does have plenty of power.

Just got a ego trimmer and blower. Used them each one time and 100% returning them tomorrow. I thought it would be a replacement for my gas trimmer and blower and it’s not even remotely close. They’re heavy too. The 5amp hour batteries are beastly. My echo will smoke this ego like it’s a kids toy. Had higher expectations. Only positive was low noise and no gas. Simply not worth it though.

I'm sorry, but the people complaining about it overheating because you shouldn't be running a trimmer so continuously are full of shit. I have a $50 Ryobi 18V trimmer that I've used repeatedly to clear the ditches on either side of my drive way (weeds grow so tall it makes it near impossible to see traffic). I can run that for over an hour near continuously other than battery changes in thick weeds with no issues of overheating. If a giant commerical system that costs as much as this does overheats in light grass and weeds for any reason with less than an hour of continuous use it may as well not exist.

my full carbon shaft model does the cut off to... but it doesn't bother me that much because I love it so much, it only slightly bothers while doing edging. That being said you're better off investing in the non commercial line with ego products. I know people recommend the power head non-commercial model over the full scale commercial trimmer, but I Haven't tried it yet I like the full carbon shaft one A lot and if it ever dies in the next year or two I'll move to the power head for trimming. If it's defective or not it probably has nothing to do with the motor or the power unit, soo might be some power management board they have universally across trimmers. I have some monthly reviews uploaded as I work with the tools though out the year.

Thanks for the demonstration. It is unlikely that the trimmer is defective but is shutting down due to overheating. What they do not tell you about battery electric tools is that their power ratings are peak and not continuous. A battery lawn mower rated for 5 HP can only put out that much power for a few seconds before it overheats. A 5 HP gas mower will maintain its output until it runs out of fuel. Battery tools are great but cannot do heavy work continuously the way gas-powered tools can.

They say in the manual to not cut longer grass in one swing take a bit off the top first then come back lower on the return swing. I think you've also gotta do your swings in a particular direction with these as well. Obviously with years of using gasoline trimmers you're going to be used to doing things that way and it just working but this takes a slight technique change.

It takes a TON of gas powered equipment to reach the $3k mark! Better last 2x as long as gas powered to make it worth it. As far as I'm concerned gas vs electric 'refueling' costs are probably a wash. But the issues you are experiencing with Ego's 'commercial' line are unacceptable. I wouldn't put up with it from my gas powered equipment. Why would it be okay for electric powered equipment. Plus, I don't know how you were able to work with that dangling power cord. Reminds me of when I was a kid and used my parents electric corded string trimmer.

I ordered a black and Decker weed eater ($70) from Amazon at the beginning of the year. It works well for me with just my yard! I turned the head sideways and held at an angle to use as a makeshift edger along our new sidewalk. it is battery powered and a full battery lasts 30 minutes or so wide open. While using it to edge, it was wide open probably 15-20 minutes and I got a bunch of failures. About to go out soon to see if it still works, I'm assuming i hit a load limit on it, much like what happened to you. Nice to see expensive machines can mess up too but sad for you to spend money on it and it not work right 🙃

Wow... so you obviously needed your money back or this was your whole plan from the start. You must not do actual large commercial properties. We do 10-20 acre properties and noone runs gas line trimmers 100% full throttle all the time. Why are you cutting the whole yard with a trimmer when the yard has a gate and you have a little 36" mower??? Though I don't know how the way you run gas trimmers on commercial properties has anything to do with the performance or failure of this battery unit. Are you trying to say that if you were on the same yard with gas you wouldn't have ran it full throttle like I did? Maybe I do more overgrown yards than your company normally sees, because full throttle is the only way anyone who isn't getting paid by the hour is running a trimmer in grass that tall. If you timestamp the exact moment in the video where I said something you disagree with that might help us understand each other better, because I am missing the connection in your example. Everything I string trimmed was stuff the 36 wouldn't be able to get. I have mowed my yard probably a hundred times with the 36, so know what it can and can't get there. Plus, even if I wanted to string trim the whole yard with it, what does it matter? It is a product review to see what all it can handle. I also don't get the point about wanting to find the limit? Of course I wanted to see if the EGO could handle this tall grass. Why wouldn't I? Seems irresponsible of me to review a product but baby it. My Ego string trimmer has worked flawlessly in 3 years and I cut stuff thicker than what’s shown in this video. But the leaf blowers don’t cut it, they quit after 10 minutes. EDIT, got a 5ah and 7.5ah batteries and they run for more than long enough.

Definitely thermal cutoff to protect the battery or the motor. More than likely protecting the battery which is very important for those type. Looks like the trimmer started just a few seconds after it cut off. That's actually very impressive performance for a battery powered system when it's getting hot. To each their own but I think you were hyper focused on a minor concern. If that's how you would normally use it, then you are in the minority of users. I'm sure that's how Ego felt and thus no great concern about losing your business.

Did EGO pay for a flood of people to come in and defend these failures? It doesn't matter he's running it full throttle. It doesn't matter he's weed trimming what might be able to be cut with a lawn mower. It doesn't matter if YOUR experience with YOUR model is different. The fact is, he runs a business and will be using it much more than half of the people commenting who use theirs to just trim their single lawns and his model is obviously failing. A torture test like this is VERY applicable and appropriate to gauge if it's the right choice of tool for his use of extended use on large and/or multiple properties a day. People defending this and running a business would NOT seriously accept these results and decide to keep it. You'd be taking it back too.

I had three EGO batteries fail within a year. That included the replacement battery for one of the batteries that failed. My local hardware store said they had numerous complaints from customers about EGO replacing the brand of internal battery cell, in the latest generation of batteries. In the end, they actually gave me two replacement previous generation EGO batteries from their own stock as EGO Australia were just not very helpful at all. I sold and donated my EGO gear and moved to Ozito in Australia and the batteries and equipment have been so reliable.

ill stick with my makita 4 stroke trimmers. i love how fuel efficient they are (especially on my large acre commercial properties), not having to mix my fuel is wonderful, and quiet enough that i really dont have to worry about hearing protection as much.

Reminds me of my 4 stroke Husquavarna trimmer. Disappointed after only lasting one year. I gave it to a relative and purchased the Honda 4 stroke only to have it stall and leak the first day I used it. I returned it and ended up w a two stroke echo. After about 6 mths it stalls once I use about a 1/4 of the gas. Once I top it off, I’m good to go. Go figure. By the way, I’ve had my Honda mower for almost 5 years and still going like new. Too bad their trimmer disappointed.

OKAY... the only time my blower or mower quits is when the battery gets low. Then it will continue working for a short period. I grab the other battery and go. I can clean out an average of 6 very dirty reefer trailers. The whole reason I purchased a battery powered blower was portability. I’m not a big fan of battery powered mowers but I concede it gets the job done even when we skip a week or two. The big blower is absolutely strong enough and the batteries last a respectable amount of time. My wife seem to be very happy with the stand up storage and unfolding the the mower. She puts the bag on and goes she now mows more often than she ever has before. I call that a tell. Sir why are you waring a flashlight on your head in daylight hours?

I've bought the EGO multi head system from HD online and it came defective. I called EGO costumer service and I was on the phone for literally half an hour waiting for them. I got tired, hanged the phone and decided to open the motor cover. I got lucky and found the problem which was a loose connection in the trigger switch, I put it back on and it has never failed me ever since. I also have the 530 blower for almost two years and I had good luck with them minor that hiccup. Would I use it commercially? Would I pay 3 grand for their commercial stuff? Hell no. But like you said, it is very good for upkeeping the lawn looking nice weekly, I also do my parents property weekly.

Ashurii I’m also a fan of Milwaukee and own several of their tools. I’ve heard great things about the hedge trimmer but my experience with the string trimmer was very poor and Ambros Landscaping has also said the string trimmer is very weak compared to the rest of their outdoor tools. Randy, the trimmer actually had great power in my opinion. Just the issues like 15" cutting swath, uncomfortable handle, toting around that stupid backpack while your torso is not straight (back killer), and finally the thing cutting off on me was the final straw. Don't give up on battery yet! (but you might have to wait a few years for something great!)

I bought the 56 volt pole saw and had the same problem, but worse. It shut off about every 5-10 seconds on a fully charged battery, and a cold motor. Returned it for a replacement, and the exact same thing happened. Does anybody know why this happens?

The batteries would have a thermal cut off to protect the over heating of yhe batteries. Most lithium ion batteries do. My advice . Trim around the bushes & mow the rest.
