I recently purchased a 2020 Gladiator Overland, fully loaded, and totally understand all your points regarding it. I had a 3.5/2.5 lift installed and currently running 33in tires with plans to go to 35s. When I made the decision, my wife and I had purchased our first house, and realized a truck would be extremely beneficial. I never owned a Jeep before but the Gladiator seemed to be the best of all worlds. I don't plan on taking it rock crawling or any extreme trails, hence the Overland instead of the Rubicon. So far, I love it! I plan on getting a bed cap for it, specifically the RSI SmartCap. If you have an opinion of these, would love to hear it. Glad you are happy with your decision! Enjoy, brother!

Yes, I am retired and I also am debt free and won't do payments. It would be hard for me to do 25k, but that would probably be the top of my budget also. I think being in debt is why people do it. It doesn't seem the same making the monthly payment as it does when you write a check for it.

I agree, I don’t like auto loans. I save money each month as if it’s a auto payment. I put it In my “auto account”. I even put it in an ETF fund to invest it. After 10 years, I use the funds to buy a truck in cash and with a trade in, I spend about $35k cash. I have money left over for accessories like lift kits/tires.

I haven't had a car payment since 1992. Every vehicle has been a cash purchase. Car payments are a waste of cash. I keep my vehicles around 10 yrs. I own a 96 XJ, my sons 2000 WJ, & my 15 Forester XT.

if you want to tow a 25’ boat it didn’t get down as a 1500 pickup. The interior is better than the Gladiator, like an expensive car , specially the 12 inch screen , every time people see it are blown away. It has under the rear seats, a table, and under both sides of the rear floor mats, a drawer. Mine has the Ram box where you can put your tools or use it as cooler ( has a drain in either sides ). 3 recalls : the side plastic covers of each sides of the Ram box can detach , the dealer take them out and install a new adhesive ; with the cargo step, Ram are installing a bracket to reinforce the area and with the 12 inch screen, there is an update that you can do it or deliver it to the dealer ( the back camera can sometimes be on when you driving forward- the update fix that). Another thing is that it comes with a factory front winch - I used it to pull my other vehicles. If you need another information, let me know.

I went the exact opposite way. Sold my JKU and F250 then bought a Rubicon Gladiator and couldn’t be happier. Didn’t need a large truck anymore but still have access to one if needed, also didn’t want to pay insurance on two vehicles. Love the power wagon and can’t wait to see what you do with it

Hey Brad, if you're looking for a truck cover for your PW but don't want the height of a camper shell look into a diamondback truck cover. Its made of aluminum and very strong unlike other truck covers that can only hold up 400lbs distributed. I have one and it holds up to 1,600lbs so I can haul an atv on top if I wanted to. They're not difficult to install, secure, and don't weigh much.

I've always wanted a Wrangler but up through the JK, they weren't comfortable enough for the family. And I've always wanted a pickup truck. So when the JT came out, it checked ALL the boxes. It's amazing. Smiles all around for me and my use of it. I just wanted to put any shoppers at ease here, because the cons are very use-case.

To each their own. I still see the gladiator as an excellent compromise between a wrangler and a full size truck. I wish I could have both a built wrangler and a prospector xl, but my vehicle collection is already too big for my space. I’m getting the diesel gladiator and putting it on 37’s.

I have been in Mechanical Engineering most of my adult life and never and I mean NEVER buy the first year of any newly designed vehicle. Most engineers are pretty smart people but through the whole process of "Design Engineering" there are a lot of "Non-Design" folks who get involved that will compromise the process. Wait for a couple of years after a few of the bugs have been worked out. You will be glad you did.

thanks for this transparent account of Gladiator ownership. i test drove one and was smitten almost instantly. as a 2nd vehicle it would work for me, but as my daily driver, i think it lacks the comfort and adaptability to my lifestyle (paddle boarder, gravel biker, dog owner). been driving Grand Cherokees for almost 20 years now and while i don't think i NEED a truck either, i would love to have one.

One year go I bought a Tradesman 2500 Hemi. Cheapest 3/4 ton 4wd CrewCab I could find. Solid axles, limited slip rear. All stock, no frills. I've done leveling kit,off road bumpers, winch, and 35" Nitto Ridgegrapplers. 25,000 miles on and off road with the truck and so far it's been foolproof. I bet the PW is a heck of a truck for you. Can't wait to follow this build.

I traded a 2020 2 door wrangler sport with 4cyl turbo, for a 2022 Rubicon gladiator. I couldn't possibly be more disappointed. I wanted lockers and towing capacity, this thing can't pull itself (3.6 panstar). It is bone stock. I drove from AR to MN 72 mph in 7th gear almost the entire way. 15.4 mpg, this thing dosen't check any boxes! Below average power, below average cargo space/capacity, below average mpg, above average purchase price and operating costs. I can't tell you how disappointed I am, in order to make this thing useful 10's of thousands more $ need be spent in the aftermarket. Choose wisely my friends, and help each other. Let's keep the wilderness open for us all to enjoy 😉

Welcome to the PowerWagon party... I've a TJ two-door and a 2013 JKU also. Truth about the JL - very capable and fit and finish is so much better than the JK. Scott Brown at FCA let me take a JL out for a day in Moab when they were first released. But, my PowerWagon has become my main overlanding and teaching vehicle. My PowerWagon simply goes over any terrain I point it at. I have almost 80K on my 2018 truck with ZERO problems - Baja to the Arctic Circle. Perfection. Cheers Brad.

Yes the 392 jeep wrangler will be insane. Mostly like you were saying about price. There are a few great places that can take a good used wrangler and stuff a hellcat engine in it for a lot less. And while I understand a short grimace when talking about the 392 or even your diesel, you still have to gush about it to keep your in. However I'd like to see more influencers really hold the manufacturer and dealers a bit more accountable. We like that they are finally giving what we ask for, but now the price is so high most cannot afford.

Dang, you must work with Jim Morrison.....lol! Great post. I got a Gladiator build back in March, however, I went with the MOJAVE. My goal was MOJAVE 1 in West Michigan....living by the federal sand dunes. I owned a 304 V-8, CJ, phoque-u-fire red, wagon wheels, side pipes, soft top, 8 miles per gallon and a complete death trap. But it certainly looked super, when parked... Now, 40 years later, loving the Gladiator. To date, 903 miles on it.....stored in the barn. Still driving my Titan Pro 4X. New Wildpeaks go on that tomorrow. I live remote and the only obstacles that I drive over are a few acorns getting back to my lodge. Your vehicle mentorship is so very valuable for all JEEP loving generations, young or old. I do however, do the Rockies in September. And south Utah in February. However, my UTV takes on the trails. Love your passion , knowledge and dedication. So very glad to see that you picked the right color on that WRANGLER....firecracker red is the new “look at me” color. The "dealer mark up" is built into the MSRP of every car or truck I'm aware of. That mark up is baked into the MSRP by each vehicle manufacturer. The kind of mark up that you're talking about, I think, Brad, is what is known as "ADM" (or ADP) meaning additional dealer mark up or additional dealer profit. I, too, am quite interested in the Wrangler 392 Rubicon. I'll sit on it and think about it for about a year. If I still want one as much as I do now, by 26 March 2022, I'll buy a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 392. I like it. If I still lived in the Highland Valley area of San Diego, or if I still lived in Springville, Utah, I'd almost certainly buy a Wrangler Rubicon 392 right now. But here in Hawaii, in general and Molokai in particular? The 392 doesn't seem to make as much sense here as it would in an area with open Interstates and heavy traffic where the extra acceleration is always nice to have. (By the way, there is a Jeep dealership in the Washington, D.C. area that sells Jeeps---every model Wrangler on the market with the possible exception of the Wrangler 392---at thousands off the MSRP. Do a Google search for Tyson's Corner.....") With Jeep dealers on Oahu and Maui putting an additional ten to fifteen percent above Jeep's MSRP on the vehicles they sell, I'll buy my next Jeep from back in the D.C. area. I see people running around with these, they look cool for Instagram, however I'm all set with having all my gear out all the time for people to walk away with. Same deal with people that leave hi-lifts and whatnot mounted to the roof racks permanently. Makes no sense.

Hi Brad. An Ex Seabee right here... I am pickup guy and Jeep guy. Got 2 Comanches , 4 Cherokees and last year I bought a Gladiator Launch Edition and a Power Wagon. Both are stock. What I like about the Gladiator is that is Converible and 4x4 capability. What I don’t like of the Gladiator is that in the highway after 50 miles you feel the bounce of the suspension & the sensation like the front seats area are driving straight and the cargo area is to either sides - weird sensation, but anyway, it’s good off road. The Power Wagon is another thing, you u don’t feel the highway - very smooth

I went the other way. I had a 2016 2500 leveled out but was to wide to go down trails. It also used more gas then a Gladiator. So I traded it in on a 2021 Gladiator Mojave which has a great ride on the road. I'm adding alot of mods on the Gladiator which makes more sense to me. I'm glad you are still staying mopar.

Yeah dude! This is something I discovered as well after years of jeeps and toyotas. A fullsized truck is THE BEST for trips where you have lots of miles, need to haul gear and are only doing easy to moderate trails. I just did a 1700 mile roundtrip in my raptor and it was so comfy! Also agree about open racks. I use a hard lockable tonneau cover. Won't stop anyone determined but it will stop someone from walking off with a chainsaw or gear tub while you're eating a burger on the road or something.

Congratulations! I did the exact opposite. I had a 2017 Power Wagon and traded it for a Gladiator Rubicon. I didn’t need the HD capabilities of the PW and really wanted the Gladiator. The JTR is basically a miniaturized version of the PW so it was no real loss. I do miss the 6.4 Hemi. Nothing can replace that V8. Congratulations again. The wife has a 2020 JLUR so I’ll be sticking around. The next vehicle for me though is the JLUR 392.

We decided to go with a painted to match topper for our Power Wagon. We decided that we did not like our things being out in the open as well. My husband ultimately decided to go with the Power Wagon over the Gladiator was the fact that it was much bigger and the fact it was a larger bed. And my husband loves his Power Wagon. It was been to Rush Springs Ranch off-road ranch & it did everything my Wrangler did while we were in Colorado. In the end I think you will end up loving the Power Wagon more than you do now.

He does but it can be a pain just because of how long the wheelbase is for a midsize truck. Might as well get a full size for some people who want more capacity and payload. The guy in story till now has had some trouble with the length of the gladiator. Doesn’t mean it’s bad and it’s still a beast but I can see why some people aren’t into it as much or would rather get a full size since you are basically going through full size truck troubles and lines with the gladiator.

Looks like he has that truck in basically " Street Trim" should have lifted it 2.5 inches , change gearing and put 40 inch tires on it. If you're going rock climbing in stock street mode you're just asking for trouble

I figured you were going to get rid of the Gladiator. I love mine, I tell people if they need a truck to buy a truck, if they want a wrangler with a bit extra storage for longer hauls, get the gladiator. I put a RDI canopy on mine and it gave me crazy extra space. Don’t worry, I’m still watching.

I'm glad to see you're finding your way through your vehicle choices Brad. For how much time we spend on the trail it's worth it to get your vehicle dialed in. That's why I traded my JL in for a Gladiator. Per your Gladiator it sounds like weight and overbuilding it was part of your problem with it. And since you have a Wrangler now for harder trails, I'm surprised you didn't keep it and pull back the build. You said in this video the Ram is for longer, less-technical trips which a subdued JT build could handle. That said, the Ram is a great way to open up the audience you appeal to and makes business sense to me. Regardless, I hope to see you on the trail someday. Congratulations on your continued success.

love the power wagon route! I debated between that and my LE but went with the LE because I already have a full size truck in my Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi and still love it after having it now 14 years and counting! I do wish I could have gotten the Gladiator as a Diesel though as I really only overland/camp with it with only limited technical stuff so w/35's and no lift it's been great and I'll be towing a 22' 3800lb camper a bunch in 2021 so that extra MPG would have been nice!

The Galdiator is a very useful and fun vehicle for many people. You have a fleet of vehicles. And that fact means some things could be somewhat duplicates. So to keep your garage from being 3x larger than your house. The pain of getting rid of some toys. Is a neccessary step. The Power Wagon will enhance your selection of adventures! I used to have a '63 Willey's Wagoneer. It had a Pontiac 389. With the stock suspension, 3 sp stick, single speed transfer case, 4.10 axle ratio. It was amazing where it would go. If I could get a Cherokee Chief. I would love to fit a Power Wagon frame under it. A Cummins Crate 2.8R, with a 6-sp stick or ZF 8-sp auto. Would be excellent. Frankenstein vehicles can be fun. But here in CA they can pass smog. A builder has to see the referee for smog certification. Typically having the equipment for the newer body or engine. And all the evaporative controls is all that is required. As a custom vehicle, the referee certifies it. Building more than one vehicleis where the rules get more complex. But the price of a 392 Wrangler is likely to be a bargain. Compared to buying a JL, then swaping in the engine. Your channel is both entertaining and informative. Always excellent!

Curious to see how this plays out. I made the opposite move from 3/4 ton Ram (not pw) to Gladiator and couldn’t be happier. 3/4 ton is just way to big for any real offroad trails here in the northeast. So heavy I was always axles deep in soft ground. And honestly on a daily basis using it as a truck the 3/4 ton bed height was a pain- I ended up with a tailgate ladder. And with regards to truck capability- the 6.4 hemi is alright, but most Powerwagons dont best the Gladiator by much in payload ratings. Will really miss the Gladiator content!

As soon as you said you wanted a truck for true off-road the Power Wagon came to mind. That thing is a beast! Also anyone that let's a stealership drop a 20k stupid mark-up on top of the MSRP it's either floating in cash or bad with math. That V8 might sound good but for long trips and fully loaded with gear the mpg are going to be single digits, not worth it.

@@sinkorswim777 diesels can over heat in rock crawling situations as well as have trouble starting in cold. Diesel make great tow vehicles and they are capable machines offroad with a decent suspension. But weighing 10k pounds also doesn’t help.

Diesels (Cummins in specific) are crazy heavy and hang quite low. Far from ideal for effective and long term off roading.

According to Dodge engineers the cooling for the Cummins and the winch interfere with each other. But the ProspectorXL is a rather pricey option.

Even the stock Power Wagon can do trails like Elephant Hill, Hell's Gate, Poison Spider. There are very few trails where the Power Wagon can't go, because of it's size.

The Power Wagon is a very direct competitor to the Gladiator, albeit much bigger. But they are both very capable off-road and pretty close in price. Living in suburbia I'm not sure it will fit in my driveway very well but if you need a truck, need off-road capability and hauling, and the room, it's a great solution.

I like the gladiator, but I found the interior a little to tight for me. I also find it a little long for such a short pickup bed. And they are expensive. So I have been fooling around with configuring trucks on line. Goal is bang for the buck. I have no real need for a back seat, but I do not want a huge truck. A sweet spot might be a Ram 1500 Tradesman regular cab short box 4x4 and stay light on the options. Keep the black grill and bumpers, stock steel wheels, put the factory all terrain tires on it, add the tow hook and skid plate package, 5.7 v8, tow package with the brake controller and receiver hitch. Spring tor the trac lock rear axle. I added the bed lights, the roll up tonauge cover. on the inside I kept the base cloth seats, added cruise control and the 8” unconnected screen. Power outside heated mirrors. I chose the olive outside color because it looked good with the steel wheels and black grill and bumpers. Now I have a somewhat appropriate purposely ugly rugged looking truck which will just look right with some mud on it. And I did not have to spend 45 or 65 k for it. I now have some budget left over for rock sliders and a grill/bumper guard, and maybe some off-road tire upgrades.

Great choice with the power wagon. I have a 2017 Ram 6.7 2500 TRX that has been built up for over landing. I'd like to send you some pictures of the things that I done to it, and some of the things I probably would have done different. But overall I think it's been a good build and a great platform for everything I needed to do.

The Power Wagon and the F-250/F-350 Tremor are the best overland platform in my opinion. These vehicles with some upgrades and a comfortable not too heavy camper, you can go everywhere with great comfort. Jeep Wranglers are just too small, the Gladiator doesn't have decent size bed and payload. I think the full size heavy duty vehicles are very underrated in the overland community, folks are saying that "they are too big". Well, there are very few trails where the Power Wagon can't go and a Wrangler can. You just have to be more careful and a better diver than the average weekendlanders. I only wish for a regular cab long bed Power Wagon or Tremor.

oh yeah, I really liked the interview you done with Dixie in Moab also! Good things to keep in mind and go over under your vehicle before you go out! I think in one of your trail trips someone noticed you leaking something and had to get under there and tighten some bolts on the gear box! Looking for leaks and things that might need to be replaced before going out, like belts and checking fluids and break lines and all that good stuff, Great interview! Things to be mindful of to keep them from ruining an otherwise fun road trip!

Ya need to come to Eastern Nevada and stay away from LV and Reno. Out here you ride the Pony Express trail in some parts, you can drive the Old Lincoln Highway in some parts...not to mention go from basin to range in a matter of minutes. Also, what a coincidence...I've got a Wrangler (rigged for overlanding only) and a Ram truck. My rigs are on a smaller scale than what you've shown me but they work for me. You're absolutely right about the truck and the luxury it provides. I've got an overlanding type trailer (not extreme though) and depending on where I'm going I hook it up to one or the other vehicle. To me, the V8 option in a Wrangler is a waste of money and is getting away from what overlanding is all about. If you're gonna be towing a full size trailer behind you then maybe the V8 would be effective but, if you're overlanding then the 6-banger is probably the best way to go along with smaller trailers. I think maybe the diesel is a good option to the 6-cylinder gas though. My Wrangler is the 4-banger and it struggles going uphill on some off-roads when towing the trailer but on the flats it does exceptionally well and the gas mileage is out of mind. I wonder if Jeep has ever thought about a two door version of the Gladiator?

Great video Master Chief! Completely agree on your Wrangler 392 sitrep. We drove a diesel Gladiator and it just didn’t have the playful character of the 3.6 Wrangler. Perhaps the diesel wrangler is the sweet spot.

Going all the way back to the CJ's I've never seen a need for a V8 in a jeep. For true exploring adventure I don't need something thats going to spin the tires, especially when trail preservation is key to this thing continuing. Great video

The minute I saw the new gladiator I thought TOO LONG. I think they should bring out a new 2 door Scrambler version with a wheelbase close to the 4 door wrangler. The jeep machines are great but prices are insane. I was lucky enough to find a very lightly used bone stock 2014 rubicon "X" and I'll drive it for 15 years until I'm almost 80 years old.

Brad, Dodge Ram does an amazing job with creature comforts. I have a 2017 1 ton dually and love all the comforts. I went from driving the dually full time to my new JL and miss all the places to put things. Have fun with the PW, you will notice the difference after a long trip in the PW and then into the Wrangler.

I've been looking at getting a Jeep, and at first was looking at the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, and I saw the Gladiator out on some of your trail trip videos, and I was wondering what your feedback was on the Gladiator, so I'm glad to see this video from over a year ago. I have a truck, but I want to keep that and get something I can build for off road. That's really what interested me in your channel! You give a lot of honest feedback on things, and I have to say, really enjoyed the interview you done with Jim on axles! I also was wondering about the diesel engines in the Jeep Wrangler. I heard you say something about them getting hot on some of the uphill climbs, and I noticed Marco's 396 diesel died on him because he was down to a 1/4 tank and got on a steep grade coming down and his smart system thought he was out of gas and got locked in gear. I guess that is the down side to an automatic in a diesel! Really liking your channel to help me see the pro's and con's of these Jeep vehicles!

Back to the perfect balance......(IMHO) Wrangler and a Ram. Back in '03 I bought a 2500 CDT w/ 6speed & factory 4:11's, and cautiously modified in the direction of a PW with it (VR lift, 37's, bumper, winch, many other goodies, yada yada yada.....) Then AEV caught on and ran with it. But, still rocking "my version" @ 136,000 miles. It has been awesome. Added a super low milage '17 JK to the fleet in 2019 and set it up nice ( I can't love the 35x10.50R17's [Yes...35x10.50's] enough I just put on with the 4:88 gearing). Still holding on dear to my '00 TJ all "overlanded out" too.... But having a great Wrangler AND a Ram 2500 that are both off road worthy......Choices rock. Some trips the Ram in a "light" set up.....sometimes the comfort of a light camper that can still squeeze down the trails. You are going to have fun setting both these new rigs up. So much has come to the game in the past 15 years. And I'm with you on the 392. Friends pegged me for first in line, but already got the JK where I want it with "needed" upgrades (dynatrack ball joints, e- locker, high angle Rzeppa, 4:88 gearing, rails, skids, diff protectors, and advance adapters T-case linkage to rid the nylon bushing fail....) Not a rock crawler, but way trail worthy. Im holding out to see what Mr. 392 ~really~ brings to the table (no 2WD, full time 4WD, 3:73 gears.....) need to see-hear-touch-feel-taste that one first. Can probably just V8 the JK if really need to. Good luck with it all ! I'll be watching......Peace~Out and a great 2021 to you all.

I want to order a 392, but if the dealers are going to be nuts, they have plenty of EcoDiesels on the lots that didn't sell. I always work on my own vehicles, so the 392 is just really in my wheelhouse, unlike the EcoDiesel.....but maybe it's time to learn. I have to admit, the emissions components on the Eco are expensive and required in CA where I live, so that has me a bit nervous given their track record. The PowerWagon was a good choice to swap with the Gladiator. I'm so happy they did a SA Front, it makes all the difference.

This was a very pleasant twenty minutes or so...very enjoyable. I wondered about your Gladiator and you answered that question. I love the choice you made with the diesel Wrangler and that will be my choice when I trade my Compass in for one. I don't do rock crawling or any serious off roading but I've wanted a Jeep for years. The Compass has been fun for me and my wife as it's taken us up and down the east coast all the way to Key West; comfortably and very inexpensively. However, I want a "real" Jeep and your diesel Wrangler will suit me just fine. You know, I share your excitement for the 50-state adventure. I did that many years ago just after retiring from Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio. It was my retirement present. My wife was serving her remote in Sicily (wow! I got to do Turkey twice and Saudi Arabia) so I hooked up a trailer with a 1981 Yamaha 850 Midnight Special to a Camaro IROC-Z and toured the U.S. I met so many wonderful people, ate in several strange homes and really got down and dirty working to help a couple farmers and ranchers. I car camped in some of the most beautiful areas of each state. I did a short weekend up in Quebec as well after meeting a couple from Montreal at a campsite in Vermont.
