One of my favorite parts of the first episode is Sokka and Katara's sibling dynamic. As someone with siblings it felt relatable, and it established their dynamic going forward, but they also used it for worldbuilding. Sokka's lack of knowledge or interest in bending both allows the show to explain what bending is (both in the context of the show and what it means in literally), and show that the war as cut the younger generation off from cultural tradition they don't have time to focus bc they need to put their energy into survival. The effects of the war are also shown through his cynicism and suspicion of outsiders, as well as the need to fill the void left by his father despite his young age. The contrast of how they react to the iceberg is great. It immediately establishes Sokka's priotities in putting himself and Katara first, while Katara is the type to leap in blind if she thinks someone needs help. It's a perfect character establishing moment. Katara's optimism and curiosity about the world is also a great contrast to Sokka, while giving us someone who wants to be helpful to Aang, making the exposition she gives on the world feel natural. As a kid I also loved that the girl character's intro was showing her get to be expressively angry and show how powerful she actually is. (As an adult, I can also appreciate how it tells the audience bending is linked to emotion)

A good first episode balances the need to introduce the audience to the world + characters + story, with some sort of contained story that gives the characters enough room to be themselves. Here the story is meeting the Avatar, reintroducing him to the world, and all of them realizing how his introduction changes things. But Katara and Sokka still have time to bicker, Aang and Katara get to have a mini-adventure with the penguins, Sokka we see instructing the boys, Gram-gram and Katara argue about Katara's place in the village. There's a number of small conflicts within the overarching one, that draws us in, and gets us attached. I was just a bit too old for Avatar when it was released, and just discovered it last year or so. It's so impressive. Good video! You have a nice balance of relevant clips that keep my eyes on the screen, smart things to say, and a nice voice. I look forward to seeing more!

Avatar was the last Nick show I watched from begining to end it came out when I was 12 turning 13 and fell into that trap of thinking im to old for nickolodeon now, but that first ep had me hooked It was the only reason I stuck with nickolodeon. Also I love how you had Daria in the beginning along with Avatar one of my fav cartoons.

Personally, I think if you really want to give someone a taste of what Avatar is going to be like, you can't just show them the first two episodes. You have to also show them the third episode, The Southern Air Temple. What Aang and company discover at the southern air temple adds a lot more gravity to the state of the world and Aang's mission, and we learn a bit more about why Aang goes into the avatar state and how he can be brought out of it. More importantly, the B plot with Zuko shows us that he's more complicated than he first appeared.

Well... Avatar is a chronological show like an anime... Each episode takes place after the last episode... Most cartoons aren't like that... You should be comparing it to other CHRONOLOGICAL shows rather than cartoons in general...

Hey! Yea i took account for the different style of writing. I didn’t find it necessary to touch on episodic vs series because the show still had the better introduction. It would also be missing the forest for the trees a little. The overall idea isn’t about making comparisons directly to other shows, but instead giving reasons why I think this is a really good introduction. Love the feedback!
