No, buying or collecting is not an addiction in itself; it’s not that simple. "Addiction is when you have a strong physical or psychological need or urge to do something or use something." I collect knives and NECA figures. I’ll buy a knife if I have enough money, really-really like it or "necessary" at the field, and it’s not overpriced for the elite market. I’m not spending all my money just to buy something to put on my shelf. It’s a hobby, not an addiction. But it's true, many people just buy and buy stuff even if they’re low on money and shelf space. It’s great that you make your own items; I respect you for that. I don’t have that ability for it. Good luck!

First time commenting here... I really enjoy the channel, and although I'm personally not there yet, I like the perspective you've shared. My own interest in knives started less than 2 years ago, so it's still kind of new to me, but I've already morphed a few times in my approach to collecting. I've gone through stages where I would only buy budget knives, times when I had to keep up with latest releases, periods where I felt I had to get higher end stuff in order to feel like a real enthusiast...along with multiple other iterations. I even started selling and trading knives both online and in person in order to see it from that side. I particularly enjoy gifting knives to people who've had no previous interest in them...(pretty diabolical, no?)...and somewhere along the line, I began to incorporate the history of knife development and knife culture into my lifelong fondness of history in general. So, naturally, I had to start collecting vintage and historical knives as well. It's like I needed to experience all aspects of knifedom, and whichever direction I looked, there was a new path I could start down. I aint gonna lie... It got dizzying at times. The result was in just under two years I've purchased in the neighborhood of 400-450 knives. Folders, fixies, bushcraft, tactical, vintage, traditionals...premium steels, super steels, cheap steels, stupid steels...you name it...I've got it! I've got knives from China, Taiwan, India, Pakistan, Spain, Japan, England, France, Germany, Turkey, New Zealand, Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Ukraine, Romania, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Oregon....and the good 'ol USA...lol. I've got examples of every blade shape on the Knafs matt. I've calculated that the number of knives I've accumulated during that span averages out to a new knife every day and a half for two years....Fortunately, nature has a way of regulating out of control humans...its called economic shortfall. The realities of retirement and financial limitations are the immodium to the diarrhea of out of control knife acquisition. Don't get me wrong...I'm sure I'd try to keep it going if it weren't for those other pesky concerns such as food and a roof over my head. As I stated earlier, I haven't yet been bonked over the head with any revelation that leads to the kind clarity you enjoy, but I think it may soon be on the horizon. Just the other day, I took stock and came up with a total of only 300 or so knives. That has got to be the beginning of some kind of change, right? If it is, I'll certainly try to run with it...When the transformation takes place, the biggest challenge I'll likely face will be the sadness of not having as many knives available to give away.....that...and dealing with the disappointment of the prayer meeting attendees when they can no longer play the game where they get to guess how many knives I'm actually carrying in church. Anyhow, sorry to rant on my first post. But...I am going to get right on this...as soon as I finish those first three knives I started making last week. Wait, what am I going to do with all that new equipment?😅

Thanks for sharing your unique perspective. I think collecting can be a comforting behavior, but like any form of consumption it can get out of hand. I started collecting a year ago, and I set a limit for myself which has forced me to re-evaluate whether I want to keep knives or sell/trade them for others. As a result, over time they’ve become more dear to me as they’ve survived this process and I’ve found new reasons to appreciate them. Regarding your Endura, I think it’s amazing when you find that one knife that’s the perfect edc for you, and who cares what anyone else thinks! For me that turned out to be the Lander 1, might be boring to most but it’s just right in my hand and for my lifestyle. The action and sliciness are underrated imo. That saying,”if you build it they will come”, was seized upon by first one knife company. Re-interpreted, it became, “send knives to KZbinrs….they will become our sales representatives”. Thus, the promotional videos were presented as, “reviews”, and a market was established with hype such as new steels, sprint runs, etc.. Many saw money and followed suit. In reality, a sharpened piece of steel is just that. I think the big collector market sees the saturated market. Chinese made knives, knives from other countries, so many knives! Reality sets in, collections are downsized as a result. Disposable income has dwindled with inflation. Many factors will eventually collapse the demand.

@5MinuteKnives2 ай бұрын
Hey bud. Thanks for stopping by! I don't think there's an online method for learning how to dig taters. I started from a really young age. I didn't hit my growth spurt until after high school, so for me, the taters seemed huge, so I needed a way to deal with them. Over the years I've been in some rough farming conditions, so I was able to practice my craft that way. Great question! 🍻

I can think of worse reasons for keeping a knife, or anything else for that matter, than the simple joy of owning it. I’ve gifted a few, I’ve lost a few knives but I don’t think I’ve ever sold one to date, I’ve lived through a few hard times in my old age. I quit collecting about 5 years ago and sold off everything except my PM2 and my Manix. I recently picked up some ZT’s that I wanted back because I missed them and a few WE knives. I’m done again because I’ve noticed that today’s knives aren’t worth the mega bucks you’re paying for them. Those ZT’s I bought cost me near double what I paid for them 5 years ago and they are the same knives. This whole blade steel thing has damn near ruined the average knife collector expense wise.

@@5MinuteKnives the “WE’s” are new to me but my ZT’s are all the “Sinkevich” designs. I’m not big on the “hard use” thing that was created in the knife community, my Buck 110 did everything I needed for that without spending the wad. This whole craze about knife steels is beyond me, 3/4 of the guys who complain about the type of steels being used never actually use those knives or they never use them until they need sharpening again. The knife thing is dead enough to get me back over to Walmart buying “Ozark Trail” blades 😆. Thanks for responding.

No GOOD WOOD scales, no dice! Stick to tatters The SAK with scissors and a file is worth a look. The locksmith or something.
