We hear a lot of artists express these concerns about doing portraits. In addition to dealing with artistic standards, the portrait subject also has expectations about what they should look like. It's a true test of skill, and it takes more than just accurate rendering to create a likeness and capture personality. We are glad to see Lilstarnerd returning to this type of painting, because she's so good at it!

You're speaking to my art soul with this!!!! I can't agree more, I consider myself a fine artist who mainly does paintings involving people but for like 2 years or more everything felt bland and just 'content' to me so this year I'm starting of with like mini paintings to rekindle that love. Lovely portrait in this video and the process of it was just amazing as always

For some reason I don't really enjoy the process of painting a Portrait. Nowadays I just love to paint beautiful Landscapes without any human touch. Painting Portraits doesn't make me feel genuinely happy ( sometimes i only do it for commission but never really because I love it )

Oh yes, I would LOVE a royalty free site with figure drawing / portrait references of 'real' people instead of over-edited models 😅 But until then we at least have your Skillshare class to look forward too, it's on my list for sure now!

I love the design of this painting, it’s so pretty! It’s also really interesting to see that your art style is so clear that it looks the same with both acrylic and gouache ❤

Great video! It's difficult to find the balance sometimes of painting what you want to paint because you enjoy it, but also what would appeal to potential buyers. For years I felt so stuck in this loop, I stopped making art in the end. Right now i'm just trying to learn more skills and enjoy the art making process again 😊 Love your work, thanks for sharing!

On Facebook there are lots of groups where photographers share their photos for artists. I'm sure that also includes for portraits. I don't paint portraits so haven't looked into that topic, but it might be a good tip.

I've recently felt similarly with portraits and market desire. A couple of weeks ago, I sold one to a business owner and she put it right in her office. It spoke to her and that made me feel very happy. Even if they aren't for everyone as home pieces, I like going covert in spaces where they are displayed (gallery spots etc.) and listening to people have organic reactions to them. Quite fun and interesting to see how different another person's perspective can be.

Loved this video Al! I definitely feel the struggle with loving portraits but not being able to sell them- I want to make more just for me and for fun!
