Today we are chatting about Warhammer Warcry. It has been a while since this skirmish tabletop game has been shown some love on the channel, and I figured you all deserved an explanation on why Warcry has had this long hiatus.
Hope you all enjoy the video and as always, happy gaming. 😁

There is nothing wrong with putting a game 'on the shelf' for awhile. You might come back to it, you might not. As you basically said, the key is to follow where the fun is leading you.

Word. The GW churn is unreal (I picked up some of those faction guides, by the time I sat down to play them a new edition was out). I wonder if the skirmish-scale (where you're collecting smaller, isolated warbands rather than a single army / faction) makes that churn harder -- like when a bunch of new space marines come out, if you play orks it's whatevs. But if you're playing small scale, every release is a potential pick-up (tho I'll say I've found the more recent warcry warbands have done nothing for me).

Donny mate, I don't know how you do it, but each and every video you produce is a genuine delight. It feels like I'm listening to a friend, sat down with a pint in a pub, enjoying good... chatter, of the dice persuasion. And I fully respect you for making this little video - again, lovely to watch, you have such good vocal delivery, and you make a really fair point. I find myself agreeing on every point; I started as a GW loyalist because I was 10 when I started collecting. I may dip back into it for the odd skirmish, or for a spot of Mordheim. But honestly, these days, Frostgrave or D&D are my primary tabletop pursuits - so I still grab the occasional GW bit of swag, but that's either a nostalgia trip (like getting Lion El'Johnson), or else I want to portray something on the battlefield (remind me to tell you about the plans I have for reskinning "Storm King's Thunder" to be set in Pictish Scotland and needing tonnes of ogres and goblins to be the foot soldiers in a redesigned conflict at Golden Acre). Anyway, what I'm trying to say, is that I think the reason I like your stuff so much is because you live be your principle; happy gaming. And that ultimately is the most appealing factor of your channel; watching a man enjoy his hobby, and share it with a ready audience.

I found you back in the day because of your Warcry reports -- it was so unique to find a solo player and your style was so different to every other player out there. I was sad when you stopped playing it and started doing more Frostgrave, to tell the truth. ...but now I'm in a similar place to you and I totally get it. I've even moved nore towards mini agnostic and esoteric games like Frostgrave, Deth Wizards and the like. It's more fun for me to play something with looser hobby rules than GW and craft my own narratives. GW's fomo and mini-spew is legit. Hobby fatigue is utterly real, so you have to do what makes you happy! Dropping a proper sub now to see where you go next! All your Warcry models and train looks amazing! Your Warcry battle reports were great too, and what got me watching your channel. Warcry is my favourite game but I can see why GW's punishing release schedules and the particular pressures of content creation burnt you out on the game. If you ever do feel like coming back to it could you maybe approach it in a narrative way similar to your Frostgrave videos? Both editions of Warcry have narrative campaign rules and following one warband through a quest would at least cut down the number of warbands you'd need to have available compared to a constant parade of novel warbands needed for multiple standalone matches!

"I rarely game in stores" I feel like it can be more fun to do it in a store, especially as a crafter. Sure hauling stuff sucks shit but the community of other crafters to network with is fantastic. The biggest downside is sharing breathing air with MTG players who are less-than-people

As a person who plays both MTG and gamesworkshop games this is an interesting take for me. I will play mtg at the store for higher levels of play I think it gets better, while I don't like tabletop games in store because competitive tabletop games get worse than casual ones. (My favorite part of tabletop tournaments is getting into the loser bracket and finally getting into some fun games.)

@drewbakka5265 2 ай бұрын
@@nichodemus10 have you considered that you need not play competitive at a store? Wargames need not (and honestly should not) be only competitive. I don't play 40k but I know full well if thier is money on the line and being WAAC is not only permited but encouraged then its player base won't be much better than magic players.
@nichodemus10
@nichodemus10 2 ай бұрын
@drewbakka5265 I have tried it, but not competitive means different things to different people. One of my early experiences was bringing a pretty casual list and finding a player who then tailored his list to exactly murder my swarm nids (back in 4th or 5th). The other is bringing a pretty casual list and running into some who was pretty chill but playing an optimized list so that the game couldn't be close even though he was not doing anything wrong. All of my non tourney store play was 6th edition or earlier when I think the game was not as well designed for it as it is now, but my free time has become more precious with age so I don't expect to go back. Though if I had the time and my small circle was unavailable maybe...

Just want to suggest Sword Weirdos and Cauldron. Swords Weirdos is minis agnostic, customisable, and has a single player mode. Cauldron is something a different beastie. It's about building small warbands of orcs or goblins and having them fight in a swamp. It's in the style or Mork Borg/Forbidden Psalm, and you roll on tables to create the members of your warbands. Another good thing is that both games are $5 or less in pdf on Wargame Foundry.

GW markets towards wargamers, I’d encourage you to try traveling to an event and play some of your painted Warcry warbands, at least once! Don’t worry about winning or losing, it’s to meet people, play with other terrain, other rules, other warbands, the “explore” aspect of the game is quite huge

I wanted to buy into Warcry, liked the models, liked the terrain, gave a sense of a more savage fantasy than what AoS was showcasing at the time. But aside from the sticker, shock of how expensive even a beginner set was, I realized that I would never touch the game proper, nobody else was interested in my area, and that ultimately I did not want to invest time and money into something that would ultimately end up as a pile of shame or in a box for a long period of time. If I ever find a box set in the wild, second hand and discounted, sure, I’ll grab it just to have the models for my own collection of plastic, but they’ll never get used for their intended purpose.

In the U.S., also didn't have access to the products like we have today. over the years, I realized that the IGYG format is really bad. I also watch GW evolve into a 'tournament play only' game system. literally, all of the games produced encourage this level of head-to-head play. there aren't any quality campaign rules or casual play. I still collect some of the models, but I'll never play the games.

I totally feel this. I started with D&D, but mostly just the role playing, not even the modeling side, and had always been interested in Warhammer, but the price point - and not having anyone to play with at the time - kept me from that. In the last couple of years, a friend got me a 40k combat patrol, and I was so excited about building and painting the models. And then we played a partial game and I just... couldn't really get into it. It's too much, too complicated (for me), and there's too many accessories and updates and rules changes, happening too fast, for me to keep up with. I still have models, and I love that that combat patrol helped me find my love for building, kitbashing, and painting, but I'm definitely much more interested in smaller, indie skirmish games now. By the way, I love seeing that you have Reign In Hell! That's one of my favorites! I would love to see you do some content for that game, should you have the time and interest!

So I found your channel a few months ago because I started collecting Frostgrave and wanted to learn more about it. Your channel has been by far the best one to reference the game and get hooked on to minis and terrain. As a gamer I have played Warhammer fantasy long before age of Sigmar when it was all units and was still super expensive. I only played orcs because I couldn't afford to play other factions. I've played Necromunda, Flames of war, Mageknight, X-wing and some other in between games here and there. I hear ya when you say that the curve to try and keep up with a corporations like GW when they release stuff is insane, not to mention they frown upon proxy minis. This is why I must say that Frostgrave is the best system I have played so far. Everything about it is lenient. You don't have the minis? sub something in. You don't like the scenario? make something up or change it. You don't have a buddy to play with at the moment? play on your own. It seems like a game that wants you to have fun and not at the expense of your wallet and sanity. Only need 10 figures in your warband! Amazing! And the terrain can be anything really. I guess what I'm saying is you seem to have a lot of fun with Frostgrave and it shows in your battle reports. Karen and LLoyd are terrific as are the other characters you have created and the best part is it's from your imagination. Keep up the great work and enjoy your gaming.

I moved from MtG to 40k back in 2000, switched to Mage Knight because it was cheaper and more manageable (as much as I enjoyed scratch building my little Ork vehicles). Quit wargaming altogether to play the YuGiOh TCG, before going fully into DnD for a few years. Completely missed out on Heroscape in the process. I did get all three MtG: Arena of the Planeswalkers sets (mostly for the minis for DnD but I did briefly enjoy the game). Right now my hobby money goes to DnD and Frostgrave (more DnD than FG due to lack of local players). My point is, I get how hard it is to find something you enjoy, and how sometimes you just need a change. And hey, it's not like you can't use that old Warcry stuff to play FG with. Goodness knows everything I've crafted for FG gets used for DnD at somepoint (and vice-versa).

Honestly. Outside of Middle Earth, I actually have no interest in GW stuff because they charge so much for the books and the games get updated so much along with the overly complex rules. i really hope after a while you can play warcry again with the burden of stress etc, it would be amazing to see some warcry batreps again but even if they don't return the other batreps are still as amazing and fun to watch ^^ Maybe its just me, but i really don't care if peeps use the same teams or terrain etc as i understand it all takes time and i do like seeing people slowly expend their collection as it feels more grounded, it's why i love your terrain build vids, even if i can't make those yet etc, it's nice to see it slowly getting expended on what you need etc ^^ recently i got the luxary to try out hametsu and after just 1 game i got hooked and i think you owuld enjoy it as well with the more narative focuses batreps ^^ but i also think you might enjoy it and all you need is the core rule book ^^ i was a bit scared coming into this vid that it was gonna be a gw bad vid, but im happy that's not the case ^^ i really like gw alternative games that aren't other big ips like star wars or marval, but sometimes i feel the people focus to much play this cuz gw bad or its better than gw instead of look at this amazing game with a more posetive vibe, while i get gw is stepping on peeps toes, i think it's a product of just of how society is atm and it's just doing the same as other companies and just anything else and such is life, but maybe it's also just my mentallity to focus on the positive and just get models i think are cool and if i don't like something i have the luxary i have peeps around me that are fine with homebrew or i can just use them in other games and being able to have a good variation of games ^^ i really love your content whatever you make, and i hope you don't push yourself to much with the terrain and frostgrave stuff so it doesn't end up to much like what warcry has become for you ^^ (i also finally ordered some crafting dowels and stuff as i wanna try and make the barricades and than hopefully slowly expend so i can make the pillars etc as the terrain vids really inspire me)

All your videos are entertaining, man. Warcry V1 was a pretty perfect game, in my opinion. It came with everything you needed. It wasnt bogged down with a million factions or rules, it was just a bunch of different barbarians killing each other. It reminded me so much of Weaponlord for the SNES that i had to get it. I wouldnt mind seeing some kind of Warcry content with your custom terrain, but do whatever makes you enjoy mini war gaming and ill keep watching.

GWs business model is, that they release unfinished games with pretty models. Every new expansion makes you feel like „well maybe it gets better this time?“. They simply can‘t design a game with constant rules and throw it all overboard regularly with point and ability updates. Its laughably inconsistent and thats why we stopped buying GW stuff completely. The old Warcry core boxes are one of the few Games that actually worked out of the box and was kinda balanced, so we treat ours like a regular board game. No extra-minis, no erratas, no fomo. It works pretty well.

Sounds like my switch from Necromunda to Stargrave. Necromunda is a fine enough game, but like Warcry - keeping up with GW & the expense of branching out to other gangs was just too much. 1 gang is $52 for the base gang, $52 for their sort of :specialists, and their book is $52 - $60 (than the core rule book is $70). 1 gang became stagnate pretty quick and I didn't want to be forced into 2 - 3 others. Than they have all of the new books, rules for vehicles, specialized vehicles per gang etc. Stargrave is necromunda light, easy to pickup, the classes - powers makes it easy to change the play up, it's miniature agnostic, you've got the freedom to create any backstory for your Cpt - XO, they can be aliens, the powers add some tactical game play and I actually like the d20 (some don't like the swing). It plays quick enough, you've got solo play, and the possibility of random encounters can quickly turn things from bad to worse or bad to good (if the random encounters go after your friend instead of you).

When it first came out with the different chaos war bands we played it a lot, but then it moved into becoming a skirmish game for all of AoS and then the first heavy metal feeling went away where where all just bought a finished war and and dukes it out 😢 There should never have been points in the game, but instead every warband should have been balanced for the game as a group and then you could just have it as a pick up and play system

Hello! I understand your point at 100%. The topic is simple, it is impossible to keep up with any GW content if you are not 100% focused on it. The schedule is crazy and the rule-bloating amazing. It happened to me in December 2022 and I left the podcast and any GW game. Since then, I have played many miniature games with more interaction and speed than GW ones, as 5 Leagues from the Borderlan, 5 Parsecs from Home, Stargrave, D100 Space and Ironsworn. I also have a channel that I keep on videos for fun as I like to record the games and tell the stories about it (in Spanish). And I decided from moment 1 that it would not include any GW... I miss your Warcry barrels, but I get it. Keeping up with it can definitely hard; I certainly know from pulling together a big narrative campaign set in the current season for my friends at my LGS the past few months. I can only imagine how much harder it is when you feel compelled to get every single set that comes out for the sake of content. Anyway, Warcry is great and I have been having a lot of fun pulling new people into the Narrative side of it, but I also recognize it would be a shame if people never went deeper and got to see the other, more immersive and finely tuned skirmish systems out there that have clever, engaging mechanics in their own right. If you feel that moving toward other games helps you to enjoy the hard work you put in the channel more, go for it! A stressful hobby kinda of misses the point of hobbying. Also, it seems that Frostgrave gave you more freedom to explore and tweak the rules, like for example the three faction finale of your frostgrave campaign. Good point David, 100% agree with you! Also, and this is no fault to GW or its many titles, but there are certain expectations people have grown to expect when their games are presented in a video. @@DiceChatter yes, agree, expectations also play an important role here. And to be fair, it's okay for people to have that kind of expectations if that's what they like. I love Warcry. While I understand that you as a content creator could get buried under the churn of new releases I don't understand that mentality for regular players. One of the reasons I like Warcry so much is that you don't have to keep up with the bespoke warbands that they put out. Unlike Kill Team the "free" factions are often more powerful than the bespoke teams, and there are an extraordinary amount of viable, fun options. I started with the Heart of Ghur box so that I'd have the core rules and a full set of terrain and have picked up or put together warbands here and there, but even if I never bought another product I'd still have a game that will last me for years to come. The one thing I do find interesting is how much of the tabletop wargaming community complains about the GW "churn" while simultaneously stating that a game is "dead" if it doesn't have a blistering release schedule.
