Back in 1st edition, I used my AoS models, I bought years before for D&D. My favourite was a warband of Longbeards, and because of the slower movement of the dwarves, I gave the heroes tankards and used the horns from the warriors helmets as drinking horns on the rest of their belts 🙂 Not slow, just drunk!

The fact that there were only tiny rules changes between Warcry 1 and Warcry 2 demonstrates the elegance of design. @wargamesontoast did a recent video explaining the downsides of the quick attack resolution…but we don’t care 😂 Do you think the game lost a little of what made it unique when there were/are fewer bespoke teams?

A couple of guys in my KT oriented gaming group have been getting into Warcry recently. One of the most striking things is hearing laughter coming from the Warcry tables. Wargames SHOULD be simple to play for the majority of people, most of us don't have time to play often enough for complex games. The 40k competitive crowd are the only people in the GW ecosphere who want "complex" rules or think they have them - all they've had is a mess of a game, spammed with books and pointless rules. Want difficult? Play something like Art de la guirre.

Na sorry Middle Earth SBG is the GOAT I don’t make the rules 😉 Really wish GW would support it more because the games so easy to pick up and there’s such a great community around the world for it. Also the hobbit era armies have some of the coolest stuff in the game despite the reception about those movies on the tabletop the hobbit era stuff doesn’t get enough attention when the game is advertised to a wider audience. I’d really recommended looking beyond just the classic Mordor, Rohan, Gondor etc stuff as there’s so many factions with their own distinctive flavour and style.

Do you hate Expedtion to the Barrier Peaks too? ;) The one thing I think Mordheim does better is the in between games, not worrying about the same amount of points hitting the table it can go a bit wilder but the actual rules on the table Warcry is such great fun. Writing rules that are simple to learn but then offers the depth in the choices you make is hard, but makes for such a great game. You can see it in the board game world too with Castles of Burgundy, quick to learn but still offering up so much depth in the game play.

I feel you on the cards. BUT, I’m still using them. I put in the effort to put stickers on them when warcry 1.5 came out to put all the (mostly points) changes on the same cards. Since Warcry 2.0 I’ve cut out the new ‘cards’ and put them on top of the original cards in their sleeves (and used free MagicTG cards from my LGC for the new ones that didn’t have a previous card. Honestly, it might not be ‘mint’ and a good looking collection anymore, but they sure feel ‘battle worn’ whenever I use them 😂. Warcry is my favorite GW game. For narrative. For competitive play I prefer Underworlds. Luckily, the Underworlds models work great to amazing in Warcry. These are the two games I’m sticking to ever since 2018 and I don’t feel like missing out on anything (yeahyeah, for painting fun I do buy a larger model from time to time).

Was very happy to grab Corvus Cabal after trying to get it for 2 years after the warehouse sort GW did. Also if they did stop support for them I mean... if you're playing casual I am sure most people would be 100% cool with them being used still. I absolutely love Warcry and love how well you can blast through a couple (or three) games in an evening - my only problem is that it shouldn't support so much of the AoS range as it leads to bad play experiences. A 'bespoke' warband from a box can easily get absolutely stomped by a 'compendium' warband composed of multiple units and heroes across different factions - this is fine for competitive tournament play, but really turns casual players off.

Question. I only know old hammer lore from my many hours of playing the total war wharhammer trilogy and watching the odd lore video, and the tiniest bits of AOS lore from battle reports. Won't the seraphon's spaceships be essentially giant temples, as I'm pretty sure they are the same ones that the few who escaped having morslieb dropped onto lustria used to do so? Great video again and look forward to finishing the rest of it in the morning... or in the afternoon now I guess.
@PeachyTips3 ай бұрын
I do agree on that for sure, as the old world ‘temples’ were ships I suppose, but felt more like stargate Go’Uld pyramid ships. The sketches and aesthetic of the Warcry one looks more like a spaceship rather than a temple, but like I said in the vid it’s just a personal preference as opposed to it being wrong etc.

Warcry is great, because it doesn't confuse complexity and depth. Games really easy to pick up, but has nice and deep tactics. Hey Peachy, I think what you describe at the beginning of the video is one of the main problems with GW. I think we can all agree they put out some incredible games (not the mainstream ones though... 40K in my opinion is ruleswise one of the worst current tabletop wargames), but the need for the "spokespeople" to be constantly excited about the latest thing is a huge downside. Anyone who isn't new to the hobby will fast get wise to this tactic. It means you cannot ever be sure whatever game you're enthusiastic about won't get abandoned or at least de-prioritized. And the fake hyper-excitement gets old fast. In other words: it's great for us hobbyists that people like you can go independent and remain enthusiastic about whatever you choose, as opposed to what Marketing tells you :) In other news, I just bought my first Warcry band. Why? Because I liked the look of the models, I don't care if they are competitive or not.
@theandf3 ай бұрын
Though I wonder if it was truly just Marketing though. I recently watched an interview with Priestley and the author of Necromunda, and they claim it was always the intention in the Olden Days to put out a game and immediately "abandon" it, while the pressure from Marketing was what instead wanted to turn everything into a "supported series". So the authors actually wanted Necromunda, etc, to be a once and done deal. It kinda contradicts my comment above. Any "insider" thoughts on this?

In my time at GW and going independent, it’s very evident that the customers aren’t daft and will easily see past these dumb initiatives that business create to sell products. So bring genuine and excited about a product you actually like is the best way to get folks excited about it, zero falseness just pure enthusiasm. In regards to the Necromunda question and the get it done and abandon the product theory is a new one to me, but then I wouldn’t be surprised after seeing the oddities behind the scenes lol

While it’s true that the card system can really randomise the game, they’re short enough it’s not that bad… or just agree with your opponent to rerack and try again

I have been so keen to play Warcry but sadly, not many people around my area do. Sad times...

That’s the biggest issue I think many folks find, I’m sure folks will enjoy it if given a chance to play, at least that’s how I’ve always experienced it.

Gotta agree about the space ship, an Ancient Temple would have been better or more fitting I've got all the boxes and released Warbands apart from the Wildercorps and Gorger's. Still yet to play a game as only gotten around to building a couple of Warbands plus up until recently been doing shiftwork

Really great analysis! What are the “sphinx” and coffin terrain pieces from? I love them! I agree about the case of Warcry. I don’t want an overly rules heavy game.
@PeachyTips2 ай бұрын
Cheers 😍 The sphinx Tetris is from a set called shattered dominion, they did loads of scenery for that, but it’s hard to come by now, which is insane as it’s fantastic scenery. The coffin was from an objectives set, I think it may still be available. And agreed, rules light, fun heavy is the way for me

Honestly I think you would love turnip28 because it's medieval/napoleonic where people worship root vegetables and follow cowardly yet charismatic snobs into a hilarious battle where everyone is just as terrible of a soldier.

Cheer bud, I’m already a firm fan of turnip28, and in a couple of weeks we will be chatting to Max it’s creator on our podcast JUGGZ 😍

Thanks for the deep dive. I have the core rulebook, but I could never get my gaming group to give it a go.

What worries me for the future of Warcry is that while all other products have gotten bigger and bigger boxes, Warcry has been getting them smaller. Kind of strange, so I would not be surprised if GW decided to just drop it. I hope they keep releasing new stuff for it because I love the game. In any case, we have enough to keep it running even if the game stop getting releases.

Agreed! I’ve had my concerns too, Mordhiem is still greatly loved and had some support in its day (mostly town cryer articles) so if Warcry does go, it’s definitely had a ton of support upto now.

@@PeachyTips Also, noticed you didn't talk about Monsters and Mercenaries. It's my favorite book of them all. Fighting monsters to capture them and use them in battle? Count me in!
