Had the Helvellyn Pro poles for a long while now. I thought you did a video ages ago running up and down the bitches with poles. I'll be out there Friday night with the poles, practicing them in the dark. Looks like a few nice tweaks possibly, but nothing wrong with my poles (tempting fate, I'll probably snap one now). Great video as always.

I have used my original Harrier carbon pro z poles so much on various ultras and technical races, I’ve worn out the tips! I think they’re fantastic poles, light, strong and easy to use. I have also regularly struggled using them with a Salomon quiver, but it sounds like they have fixed that issue slimming the handles down and using a smaller basket. Never had blisters on my hands either and the grips deal with sweaty hands really well. I think they’re great and I love running with poles on long races - they are a life saver - and I actually learnt how to use them off one of Harriers videos, on the North Cliffs and mighty bitches! Looking forward to treating myself to a new pair!

They’re a lot easier to get in and out of the Salomon quiver now Matt, having the small mud basket makes a big difference. Thanks for watching 🙏🙂

I will always prefer Leki poles with the shark tooth contraption attaching to a glove. I have lately adopted Instinct’s clever idea of using two quivers. It balances my hydration vest and is so easy to stow or deploy my poles. 😁

Been using poles for about 5yrs now. Black Diamond Carbon Z. A couple of struggles that I have overcome: the release button gets pretty stiff to the point of them being stuck and my not being able to collapse them - worked out that occasional spray with WD40 sorted that; the tension chord is pretty tight, so much so that sometimes, in Summer, my hands are too sweaty to get a grip to collapse them and in Winter, too wet. These Hellvelyn poles look great and if/when my Black Diamonds give up the ghost, these will be a definite consideration. Thanks very much for the review. All the best with Western States draw. 🤞🏼

I've had a pair of the original Pros (largely due to your recommendation) for a couple of years now and they've saved my race a few times. My biggest complaint has been that the large basket made it really difficult to use my Salomon quiver. So much so that I've resorted to wearing them on the outside front of my vest. (Advskin 12). I was considering Leki just for the slimmer design, but IDK, these look enticing. Not that I NEED a new pair of poles mine, but being able to use the quiver again might be nice.
@leighcurran8696Ай бұрын
Mentioned this on a video a while back and got this reply from harrier- Good morning all, I can confirm that the handles and mudguards have been designed to be slimmer so they are easier and more comfortable to pack in your race vest (or quiver). We're not looking at producing quivers for now as our race vests currently offer ways to store poles but it is really helpful feedback, which I'll transfer to the team as we always look for ways to improve and offer you what you're looking for when running. - Sarah from Harrier

@leighcurran8696 as sarah says we listen to every comment and idea our customers have for us to keep improving! Thank you 😊
@TomMorgan1066Ай бұрын
I have experienced the same problem so thinking of taking the plunge with Leki with a bit of a push and gravity I can get them in the quiver but no chance of getting them out without removing pack. I did ask if the baskets can be removed but only with the use of a grinder 😅
@chrisshaw2810Ай бұрын
Same issue for me - great poles, didn't fit in the Salomon quiver, so practiced fixing them on the back of the Salomon 12, which is now very successful for me, so no quiver necessary.
@Run4AdventureАй бұрын
The new slimed down version fits a lot easier into a Salomon pole quiver and they’re easier to get out. It could be tricky with the previous version, sliming the poles down has made a difference 👍

@katemackenzie472Ай бұрын
Carbon are definitely lighter but I started with alu on my first pair and they did the job 🙂 but our new alu are lighter - so depending if you want super light, or a bit lighter and stronger either would be a bit more streamlined compared to your current ones. Got these poles for Lakes In A Day but didn’t end up using them in the end. Partly because I couldn’t fit them in the Salomon quiver and partly because they’re just a bit of a faff. Think these are great value if you want poles though
@Run4Adventure27 күн бұрын
You couldn’t fit them in your Harrier poles in your Salomon quiver? I’ve used them in my Salomon quiver for the last two years Paul? Do you have the new version of the Helvellyn Carbon poles?
@chad.haggertyАй бұрын
I’ve got a pair of the original Hellvellyn poles. Love em and my only complaints would be addressed by the changes: -cut off the baskets so they’re sleeker -narrower will fit the Salomon Quiver more easily And that turquoise…oh yeah!! I think I’ll get a pair of these for my wife (only because I can’t always get the latest greatest just for me - happy wife, happy life and all that).
@Run4AdventureАй бұрын
Did you watch the video Chad? 🤔 That’s exactly what Harrier have done with the new version, made the pole’s sleeker and the mud baskets smaller so they’ll fit in pole quivers easier 👍

Argh I'm so sorry you had pole casualties! If the terrain was a bit unforgiving we have our very slim aluminium ones which aren't that much heavier than carbon, they're a good option for rugged terrain and steep descents

I think poles are essential for 50km plus in the Alps, I also use them on shorter runs because the climbs near me are long and steep. For shorter distance and less extreme hills a good runner might be faster without them.
