I have had parakeets for almost a year now but my two oldest parakeets didnt like me and were terrified of my hands. They were from a pet store so they were terrified of hands. So I decided to get another bird but from a breeder. It was hard to find a parakeet breeder especially in my town but I asked a Facebook bird group if they knew anyone who breeds hand tame parakeets. And I got suggested a woman who does. She was so nice and showed me the babies she had and I feel in love with a blue,white and black parakeet. So after a month of waiting, I finally got he/she and the breeder even clipped my two other parakeets wings so I can train them. And now I have three semi hand tame parakeets and I'm very happy to have them. I get panic attack if my left alone so having them as white noise and a distraction to my anxiety is great. Their names are Winry, Sky, and Echo and I love them very much😂❤
@petrescuework-difficultcas65815 жыл бұрын
Getting your birds wings clipped is cruel. Birds need to be able to fly to stay healthy and happy. You're doing a horrible job of petkeeeping.

Lifestyles certainly change over time. So it can be hard to think long term. Even 5 yrs from now, you could be in completely different unforseen situations. I would say, even if you expect that you would be able to care for a bird long term, still have a back up plan so that you dont end up neglecting a pet if/when things change.
@Cyannas6 жыл бұрын
This. Especially kids, since that’s such a common game changer. I don’t know a single parent who’s idea of what raising children would be like actually turned out that way. No one factors in that the child will probably not be 100% cooperative with your vision. :P 15-70 years is a very long window of opportunity for the unexpected to happen.
@Justwigglin6 жыл бұрын
Agreed 100000%. If I have learned anything in my short 23 years, it is that you have absolutely no idea what life will throw at you, good or bad. In a day, your whole life could flip. Always think about the animals first. Take your emotions out of the situation and simply look at what is truely best for the animal. And I beg of people, please NEVER impulse buy an animal. That is a literal living being, not a toy. End of rant.
@petrescuework-difficultcas65815 жыл бұрын
@Jessica M as I mostly agree, there are sadly too many people that use "oh my life changed, I can't keep the animal anymore" as an excuse to get rid of an animal they are bored of or tired of taking care of. There are actually little life changing events that make it *unable* for you to keep a pet anymore. There are most likely always options, if you really desire to keep the animal. There are people who get wheelchair bond and still keep their dogs that they have to walk three times a day. If you plan on moving house, you can look for houses that *allow* petkeeeping and stay away from these that forbid pets. The vast majority of people isn't "forced" to move into certain buildings. So moving house and having a tenant not allowing pets is no excuse for getting rid of a pet. Also suddenly upcoming allergies are no reason to abandon a pet, as there are treatments for allergies available. If you look at shelters, there are so many pets abandoned because of those "reasons", which could have been avoided if the owner was really dedicated to keep the animal. But sadly many people aren't.

When I was little my grandmother had a macaw named rascal, but sadly when I was about 4 or 5 he passed away in a house fire when nobody was home. He was the best bird ever but his previous owners weren’t very nice, so rascal would cuss a lot when he got scared or mad. He would also mimic a baby crying in the middle of the night. I planned on getting birds over ten years ago. I did a lot of research and I ended up with having the choice between bourkes and canaries, because they both fitted my needs and wishes the best. I got canaries and over the course of the years a pair of finches, doves and some quails. In the end these were the perfect choices for me. I took the quiz twice. My first recommendation was bourkes. After changing up one answer, which I wasn't too sure about, I ended up getting canaries recommended. So I can confirm, this quiz is pretty accurate.

When I was younger my paternal grandma had three birds: a cockatiel, a budgie, and a love bird. I remember her cockatiel was never really handled and we assumed he just didn’t like that as he once but my mom so we left him alone but now I can see that we probably should’ve tried to gain his trust rather than leave him alone all together. Because of this, I always thought cockatiels aren’t as friendly as budgies but now I realize that it depends on how much time you spend with them and how you gain their trust. And I took that My Right Bird quiz and it said my right bird is a Pied Cockatiel.

if in the future i were to get another bird, which i think it would be SO COOL to own a mini cockatoo or african grey, i would rescue/adopt an older one. also, i have a spot right near my birds cage and she chirps at me really loudly when i’m not watching her, and i take her to my room to sit on my shoulder while i’m on my computer, she she slowly walks down my arm, thinking she’s stealthy, jumps into my keyboard and starts trying to tear off the keys. sometimes when i hold my hand up to stop her, she just looks at me and walks back up as if she didn’t just try to rip off my keys, it’s pretty funny

My parents didn't do much research (if any) when they got our African Grey. They bought him in 2004 for my 9th birthday and for the longest time I couldn't touch him because he wouldn't let me and would bite. He's around 15 years old now, and I can actually put my hand inside his cage and pet him and stuff, he's really cute. But he's really afraid of pretty much everything, every time we add something new to his cage he stays as far away from it as he can get until he finally loses the fear and starts playing with it (it usually takes him 2 to 3 days). But what makes me sad is that he doesn't know that when I have my hand in front of him is for him to step up onto it so I can never have him on my hand/arm/shoulder. I do take him out but it's when I open the top of his cage and he goes there. I'm still figuring out the right way to teach him how to step up. Any tips?
@poofypoofball38796 жыл бұрын
Try to spend more time with him; outside the cage. Read a book, sing softly to him or watch TV with him nearby you, to get him used to your voice and looks. Slowly begin feeding him treats from behind the cage. Feed him healthier food like fruits and vegs, like apples, bananas, bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, ocra, etc. Once he starts eating the treats from behind the cage, open the cage and try to bait him to come out of the cage. Once he trusts you enough to get the treat from outside the cage, you can start to train him to step up. If he is terrified of you still, use a perch or a stick first. Gently tap him lower abdomen, just above his legs and say "step up," or "come" or whatever, and hold a treat above it so he has no choice but to step up in order to get the treat. You don't ALWAYS have to use treats; sometimes just compliment him in a happy cheerful voice. Hopefully over time, he can get over his fear. Ensure he gets at least a few hours of out-of-cage time a day so he'll get used to his suroundings and won't be so phobic.

My neighbors have a blue and gold macaw, and two other big birds. The blue & gold is inside and they let him out but hes mean and you cant touch him unless your his owner. The two others that are outside (I live in texas) are never allowed out. They basically feed them and that's it. They also have a little bird but I'm not sure what kind it is. Hes nice sometimes. Other times he'll bite the crap outta you.

PLEASE make sure you’re getting into. My bird will live 50-60 years and I am more than aware of the commitment. Please make sure you know what you’re getting into. And I agree pet store people don't always know everything about the pets they have for sale there me and my aunt are roommates and she was asking him questions about Guinea pigs now I already had 2 in the past so with that being said I know what it takes and I know more then my aunt knows she never had a guinea pig so I took her to the pet store for her to see what they are like and she got to hold one and she liked them she started asking questions and he didn't know how long their life span is...I do so of course I answered my aunt and gave the man more information about the animals he is selling everyone should do their research before getting a new pet. My aunt she has me so she doesn't really have to do much but spend time with them but before I got my first Guinea Pig I not only did research but I also got a friend who is a vet tech and asked her questions about them. I had rabbits, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, fish, and a rat. I have however also took care of horses, chickens, and birds as well. One of her birds is a cockatoo and she is pretty goofy she likes certain people well she loves me. Don't know why but she does. She jumped on my shoulder and my neighbor was like I thought you would scream well no I know better. She just chilled on my shoulder and then she got bored and went back to my neighbor and she put her back in her cage and said well now if I die you get Hegans because normally she bites people. Love the fact the bird likes me. Love animals love your channel.
