I graduated from UR in 2016 and while my academic experience was great, I absolutely experienced a lot of the cultural things that you were frustrated with. I studied art history and had similar feelings about it being underfunded/not focused on. The b school is undoubtedly their main focus. I can’t imagine going there in the current political climate and I’m glad you found somewhere that feels more like home!!

Oof, this is discouraging. Mom of a high school junior looking at Richmond, which seems perfect on paper -- but she'd be very much aligned with your views. Will have her watch this and consider. Thanks for your thoughts -- best of luck to you!

It’s interesting to hear your insights of going to UR. Many moons ago I applied there and the culture as a Black student was definitely different and interesting. It definitely felt back then, some 20+ years ago, that they definitely were looking to diversify the school. I’m also a native of the city of Richmond and left to go to school a couple of other life experiences and have landed back here and I can safely say that Richmond the university is in a bubble compared to the rest of the city. VCU has a very different reputation than UR. For those of us who live in the city the University of Richmond is kind of scene is this bubble in and of itself. Especially in the area that you were in it’s not very diverse at all. I’m glad that one, you took the time to educate yourself on a lot of things and two that you have grown and learned to be outspoken as a result.
@JaneDillonHorner3 жыл бұрын
That is so interesting!! thank you for sharing your perspective. I'd definitely agree that the school itself was a bit of a bubble - like the experiences at UR tended to differ a lot from students I knew at VCU for example! thank you for watching and commenting :)

I'm sure you have taken the wise and right decision. I'm also glad some experiences at Richmond moulded you as a better person. I can see that beautiful heart in you, please never change.! Hi there! I went to university of Richmond for my freshman year of college (2006-2007), and I transferred too. My reasons were kind of similar to yours. I am on the autism spectrum, and I badly wanted a “real” college experience…unfortunately, because of my social differences, the rest of the people there did not allow me to have that experience, since literally every time I’d walk into a party, I’d be called all sorts of horrible names by literally everyone else there. On multiple occasions, I was even kicked out of parties, and on one occasion I was even told by a guy at a fraternity lodge that I’d be physically removed if I did not leave because no one liked me there (his words not mine). After that year, I went to UNC chapel hill, and while I did still have some social troubles (which I’d have literally anywhere because of my autism), I was MUCH happier because the environment was larger/more diverse. I could actually go to a party and have a fair number of people want me there and treat me with respect…something I never really had at UR. Best decision of my life to get out of there.

hi! i'm currently a freshman at UR and your earlier vlogs actually made me even more excited to go! i'm also from southern california and going to school here has also made me miss home wayyyyy more than i initially thought i would. it's just such a different environment here, and I'm also realizing that the culture at UR is definitely not what i personally align with. just so disappointing (sororities, segregation, etc). i don't know if going to school in covid times is making it better or worse to be here, either. it just feels so good to know that i'm not the only one who feels this way, and i thank you so much for providing your perspective :)). i really needed to hear this right now.

omg I didn't know all this about Richmond. im actually a current senior and have committed to a college but had looked into Richmond in the summer and I was always under the impression that most of the student population consisted of northern students, like from the ny/ct/nj/ma areas. Also, like if u go to the niche page for Richmond, it gives the false impression because it says for the student population that people are mostly liberal and republican but the percentage for liberal is higher. also, it says that the majority is moderate, not liberal or conservative. I guess these college ranking websites can sometimes be wrong about what's really inside. Thankfully I never applied to Richmond and I'm going where I wanna go. But thank you so much for being so open about your experiences and helping people out who may love Richmond but don't know the negative side of it. :)

I understand why USC because of your major. It’s south of Hollywood and the cinematic universe is there. For the tuition that you’re paying, you didn’t consider NYU with its outstanding reputation and contacts everywhere. And there’s Columbia University where you can do almost the same if you wing it. Imagine an actress with a Ivy League degree. URichmond is Richmond with its former stratified society. VCU is the real university in Richmond anyway but for whatever reason there isn’t a football program. This is unbelievable because VCU is one of the largest VA universities I believe. Moreover, VCU has vastly more academic offerings and opportunities to increase your marketability and academic experiences. UVA and VT are great universities but located in rural areas which aren’t always compatible for diversity beyond their football and basketball programs.

My sister actually goes to NYU! From what I've heard from people I know, NYU (and NY in general) is great for people who want to focus on theatre, but screen acting is where I see my career going, so LA definitely makes sense for that. I also thought it would be so awesome to be an actress with an Ivy League degree, but I got rejected or wait listed from every single one I applied to when I was a senior in high school lmfao

I just stumbled upon this video and OMG you hit it spot on. I just transferred this past Spring because of many of the same reasons - the culture is horrible in general unless you're white or come from a wealthy background. I was also hoping there would be more classes for acting instead of the basics course that all the athletes take for an "easy gen ed."

I'm planning on applying to it for next fall but it's pretty worrying that so many students are dropping out. The race/class stuff is an issue too but I'm from Virginia so that's basically part and parcel for a Virginia education. Thanks much!

to all aspiring college applicants. Try to know who you are, what you want. what your passion is, hopefully you know that before you apply to any college. Why are you going ? Education in the academics for future should be right at the very top . Just my oldtime opinion .

while I can write a book on the University of Richmond attributes ..... Let me begin by saying while I sat in on the commencement of '17 I saw the diversity first hand which was well represented for the class. International and national students of many far and near places . Smiling faces accepting their degree in academics of higher/ deeper education which was well deserved for hard work applied . The student body of undergrads is much closer to 3ooo, the 4000 number you cite is inclusive of the graduate studies students, who generally live off campus . I would say that if one knows what one wants and who you are it would be among the top choices of higher learning institutions . To me college is primarily about education/ academics , the study in greater depth of the subject to which you are striving for . Your "calling" if you will, to serve your fellow traveler on this, ones journey through life . This journey to bring something to this world greater than oneself . BTW not to mention a roof over your head and maybe even family ? .. Should we consider cultural and political campus agendas for college application I would say "Yes" . if thats your focus for your future and what motivates your education . Nationally acclaimed football and basketball fans would do well to look elsewhere . . My Son, Bio major/ health sci minor UR EMS team , Schola Cantorum Choir, Summa Cum Laude '17 was one of those 1000 smiling faces . He is now a Physician Assistant PA_C practicing in Martinsburg WV . God bless you Ms Horner. I sincerely wish you well .

I'm so glad I found this video. When I first heard about the University of Richmond, I was honestly excited about applying to the school (Applied last week sadly) I saw they had great programs for my major and it had lower tuition compared to the school I got accepted to. I was 100% ready to apply there. I'm also originally from California and my family is currently in Georgia. When I first arrived in Georgia, I notice things were different. I found it hard to fit in and still do to this day. One of the first questions kids asked me was (what is your race? Who are you? Why do you talk like that?) Etc. People would say anything to try to see what offends you and try to start stuff for no reason especially if you're not from there. I understand a few were curious, but mostly we're trying to target me to start stuff. Kids usually hang out within their group and it's hard trying to introduce yourself when people just give you that look like you don't belong here. I'm honestly glad I found this vid and Im withdrawing from this school. I don't want to go through the same stuff I've been through in Georgia. My main goal is to start over and try to put myself out there and gain new experiences.

Not a lot of people from Virginia go to University of Richmond. Richmond tends to be more liberal city especially when you get to VCU. I don't hear much about UoR which is weird at least from Northern Virginia students maybe its more application from the south of Virginia which tends to be more racist at least thats what Northern Virginia people believe
