One other benefit of using lower FPS is that you get more light into each frame. So you can shoot at a better ISO setting in low light.

If you pause the video and scroll through frame by frame with the "Punkt und Komma" buttons, every fourth frame seems to have a slightly larger sideways movement. New to video. I realize you are using Fujifilm to shoot video, but when I looked up the specs on the Nikon Z9 (4K, 8K, RAW or H.265) the bitrates are the same for 24p and 30p. Putting the "feel" and "mood" that you are trying to achieve aside, wouldn't that typically mean that the faster frame rate (i.e. 30p) with faster shutter speed assuming 180 shutter angle, look cleaner and show more sharper detail - all other things being equal (i.e. same ISO)?

I don't think video compression math works that way.... Lets say you are shooting with long-GOP, with lets say 1- every 2 seconds, that will be nearly 3 to 10-times smaller in size than doing all intra-frame capture. On the GH5 for example, the all-intra capture mode is 400mbps, versus the 150mbps of its long-GOP mode. If the GOP-rate is unchanged between 24p and 30p mode, (1 key frame per 2 seconds), that lower frame rate doesn't offer 30% more bit quality, but more like 5% more bit quality. This is because most of the bitrate cost goes towards the keyframe, and both 24 and 30fps video can have the same amount of keyframes. It does depend on how the video encoder is setup, but just something to consider. Even if you were shooting with Intra-frames only, then the math *might* hold up, but even though by that logic you might as well take photographs at 8-fps. Motion is data -- and by shooting at a lower frame rate you lose that additional motion data. We see this with slow-mo video -- those extra frames are valuable data. Lastly, you can shoot raw; why limit yourself to just 100mbps even? Lots of cameras are doing 150mbps or even 400mbps. External recorders can do 4:4:4 even.
@diman40105 жыл бұрын
You are totally right here: this math doesn't work that way for interframe codecs like h.264 and h.265. I did my own testt with 60 fps footage and with the same footage, exported at 30 fps. With constant QUALITY factor instead of bitrate. I got just about +20% bigger file in case of 60 fps. I trust THAT math, not this filmmakers misconception.

@diman40106 жыл бұрын
+Mike Smale yes, your footage came out choppy when using 60fps exported on a 24fps timeline because of a simple math: 60 is not dividable to 24 evenly. In a result, there are unregulary dropped frames. But there is the thing with 24 fps footage which is playing back on a typical 60 Hz monitor - 60 is not dividable to 24 evenly, so there is irregularyty in frame duplication which happens inside that monitor to display 24 frames 60 times. The "magic" of that 24 fps is very very overrated. People who teaching this world how to get that cool cinematic look just don't know the math and engineering basics. Don't ruin your footage just because someone told that "24 is a Hollywood standard so you need to shoot in 24".

Yes, diman is absolutely right. This 24 fps myth is only that, a myth. 24 fps makes sense for cinema where the display rate is 48 Hz. With drone footage with all the pans and shifts and tilts it gets very obvious, in other footage less so.

24 and 25 fps are the better options in low light as they allow a lower shutterspeed. However, 1/50 and 1/60 shutter is not a big difference and depending on the Hz of the lights around you, you might have to adjust anyway to avoid flicker. So use your normal framerate that you always use and adjust the rest to the situation. 24/25 gives you more flexibility if you don’t have a standard framerate yet. For bitrate, always the highest possible.

Pascal Basel the problem with 24fps on a drone is that the video has a slight stutter which takes away from the cinematic effect. I saw a video on KZbin where someone recorded in 30fps and converted it to 24fps - which helped get around the stutter issue.
@StevoHDA4 жыл бұрын
Actually judder has never been an issue until the world moved to lcds with sample and hold frames, essentially the lower the frame rate the more the judder because of image persistence. This was a non-issue with plasmas and especially crts because frames were only up for a split second then following by darkness for awhile (black frame) until the next frame. Even projectors before crts had a shutter to create black inbetween frames.. and if you look at history, you'll find that 24 was scientifically found to be the best framerate for various reasons. Consumerism has somewhat tainted immensely how we view media and moving to higher fps isn't the solution, changing the technology is, like black frame insertion on the 2020 oleds.

most displays are 60hz and 24 does not go into 60, meaning you get stutter from a 24fps video. a 30fps video would just show 1 frame for 2 frames to fit into that 60hz refresh rate, but a 24fps video would have to fit 1 frame into 2.5 frames, which is impossible, meaning the display has to alternate between showing a frame for 2 frames and 3 frames, which causes and stutter and inconsistency.

To be honest, the main reason why people shoot 24 is for minimizing size and load on the CPU in post, with cinematic look being a close second. However, you do make a good point about the quality per frame but to be honest, most cameras today don't have discrepancies in the quality between 24 and 60fps...well, most prosumer cameras at least. Still, I shoot 24 in 4k because the fewer frames over 2 hours makes a difference. Short 4 minute YT videos though...I would say, the standard is leaning toward 4k@60fps except for cinema shorts. I mean, why would manufacturers put so much effort in making it a standard if people weren't evolving toward it?
@ALxdCr4ftPlays4 жыл бұрын
30fps has already become the standard. 24fps is old school. Samsung smartphones like the galaxy S8/9/10 series don't do 24fps they only have a 30fps or 60fps option. And 30fps offers smoother footage than 24fps. The upside with 24fps with Canon and Sony is 30fps 4k recording occurs a crop in the video, where as 24fps there is no crop in video recording. Which is why some people use 24fps because they wan't the wider video. 24fps is definitely not ideal for time lapse videos unless you enjoy choppy videos. For time lapse, you want at least 60fps.

@@nicholasholcomb9461 it depends on your camera / app. But if we talk about THE QUALITY PER BITRATE, In case of h264/h265 codecs things much more complicated rather than just averaging things. You can't say, that you need 20% more video bitrate to preserve same quality in case of 30 fps instead of 24/25. In fact you need these 20% for a DOUBLED amount of framerate. So the quality drop for 30 fps vs 24 fps with the same bitrate is barely noticeable if any. But the stutter / judder that 24 fps comes with is a problem. You won't get the actual 24P look. Therefore you have to shoot 24P. But you can slow it down to 40% if you want to for slow motion.

1:56 I think slowing down an originally 60 fps footage to a 24 fps slomo results a choppy video, because of inconsistent loss of frames. Here is the resulted distribution of frames and pair matching: 60 fps frames: [1-loss] [2-kept] [3-loss] [4-loss] [5-kept] [6-loss] [7-kept] [8-loss] [9-loss] [10-kept] [11-loss] [12-kept] ... [58-loss] [59-loss] [60-kept] 24 fps frames: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] ... [30] Slowing a 60 fps to 30 fps is shows a consistent matching, therefore a smooth video result: 60 fps frames: [1-loss] [2-kept] [3-loss] [4-kept] [5-loss] [6-kept] ... [59-loss] [60-kept] 30 fps frames: [1] [2] [3] ... [30]

Then a lot of my videos would be choppy... most of the time 60p is slowed down to 40%. So every frame is shown in the final video.

Chris Meuzelaar Hi Chris, I used the Panasonic 25mm F1.7 for these shots. The polarizer is from Gobe. But there are much better polarizers out there, Hoya for instance. Thanks, what topics would you also e interested in?
@ChrisMeuzelaar16 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the reply Pascal :) An in depth long term review on the GH5 would be great with your thoughts on its stills capability, what is good, what could be better. I want to produce better quality videos for my farming business with stills also for social media and am still not sure about micro four third versus APS-C and full frame. I like the idea I can do slow motion for machinery and 4k for that crisp look and that it is weather sealed so it can go in a dusty or wet field all in one package. I'm also curious about underwater housings, filming and photography underwater. Thanks again for the reply!
@pascalbasel6 жыл бұрын
I think better for my audience would be a video about how to set up the GH5 to get cinematic travel footage, as there are already many reviews out there. What do you think about that? For your farming business, the GH5 should be good, but if you shoot a lot of stills, look at the GH5s. It's without the sensor stabilization, but its low light capabilities are just awesome... For underwater, I would recommend using the GoPro.

You can do that, on paper you would loose a bit of quality but not really noticeable for the viewer. Doing that allows you to slow the footage down to 80%. Not a real slow-mo but looks a bit dreamy.

thx for the info but pls DONT USE BLACKBARS and how do you use 23.976fps with 60hz displays?
@pascalbasel6 жыл бұрын
Why not blackbars? 60hz displays automatically calculate it and display it correctly. Like mentioned in the video today nearly every display plays all kind of footage.
@goksel50126 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response but I didn't seen it till now. So a 16:9 display will automaticly make blackbars. It looks diffrent for a TV boradcast (because of watermark or subtitles and compatibility). When it comes to a Webvideo, the player will automaticly generate the Blackbars in fulldisplay mode (tbh. I'm not sure if it is the player or the display itself). But if you use a 21:9 display, you're gonna have blackbars on top, bottom, left and right if there is rendered blackbars in the image: i.imgur.com/9KSXy7v.jpg In this Image, you can see the mater of 24fps on a 60hz display: goo.gl/1dqYYH If you start looking close to things like that, you can realize a small lag. So the display showes you the frames this way: 1,1 | 2,2,2 | 3,3 | 4,4,4 | 5,5 | 6,6,6 24fps works maybe in cinema, but not for consumers. maybe it works with free- or g-sync, but then you need the hardware and money for it. the most viewers are looking videos with their mobile. So that's my opinion. 24fps is just acceptable and can be used for better slowmo effects, but it isn't the "end sh*t". We are just used to it.

@@benwyatt7619 Yeah, this thought is not wrong. It really depends on what you do with the footage and how it's shot. Slowing 60p down by 50% on a 24p timeline would look weird, but to 40% just looks normal etc.

On KZbin it is better to do it like that as in 21:9 it doesn’t allow end-screen video suggestions. So yes in that case it’s professional to do that, too.

@@pascalbasel have not expected that, thanks for the explanation. However, since you've chosen to go with an 21:9 aspect ratio, I think it is ok to make some sacrifices. Maybe it's just me, but the end-screen suggestions are not that useful IMO. Also, some may say that I can use a special Chrome extensions in order to stretch the image, but you should have in mind that this is not an option on a smartphone, while many smartphone nowadays have 18:9 (or 18,5 or 19,5) screens which leads to having your video inside a huge black box.
