Hi Pat, Thanks for the HSC Tutorial :) I saw that in the manual and was thinking it is primarily to save electric for a destination city center or such. I never thought of it as a way to ease the engine up to temp. I think about that zero to full power thing as well so I use the Sport mode while at a couple lights before the interstate. The engine isn't doing much more than idling and then once finally at speed I go back to comfort. I think this is also why the oil has such a low Winter viscosity rating. I think it is something BMW has struggled with a bit originally with folks not using the engine at all costs for weeks/month and then hammering the poor thing to get on the interstate with very exciting results. I believe that is why BMW implemented that start-up-once-week whether you need it or not bit. I've been meaning to go into the manual to see how to set a feature to the pre-set buttons. Thanks for saving me the trip! That's great :) Franny

Thank you Franny, for sharing your thoughts and experiences. I also used the Sport Mode to help warm up the engine at lights just before the interstate and then switch to Comfort after I got on the Baltimore Beltway. You are right, idling is not going to put a load on the engine so that should be very acceptable for warm-ups while being conscious of engine longevity. I recently read an article explaining that idling with a cold engine running rich may result in the extra fuel mixture getting deposited onto the cylinder walls, neutralizing the lubricating effects of the engine oil and potentially leading to cylinder wear. I'm honestly not sure I believe it, as I have had experience with cold weather carburetor starts, as you have. You have to let it warm up and kick down, or you will have a heck of a time driving. But, that data resonated strongly enough with me to actually stop using Sport for warm ups and instead using Eco Pro to warm up on the go. I'm sure that has it's own negatives as well, so babying this engine to help with longevity is likely to be an impossible feat. LOL. Either way, anything is better than a cold start on demand when acceleration is needed. I'm curious what you think. And, I believe you're spot-on with the low viscosity and the routine self-starts on the mid-engine. I'm glad they considered a lot of these things when designing the car. Otherwise, we'd be stuck with throwing it out and buying a replacement every 4 years. Glad to help with the pre-set info!

@@Bmeri3 , Hello John, I'm doing great with my 2019 i8 Roadster. I have nothing but positive to report of my first year owning and driving this car. I haven't had any mechanical issues or any problems while I clocked about 6000 miles in my first year of ownership. So, no regrets here. in fact I have become more enamored with this one of a kind super vehicle than when I first brought it home. As far finding my i8, my best friend owns a used car dealership in Salt Lake City. He ran across two 2019 i8 Roadsters in the wholesale market and bought both. I fell in love with them and told him if he decided to sell one, let me have first dibs. He called me a few months later and said he was going to let one go and it only took me a few minutes to commit. Six months later, my friend acquired a third Roadster, so I have one of them now and he keeps one at his full time residence and one at his winter residence. I should add that my car dealer friend has a number of other true exotics/supercars including a Ferrari 458, Audi r8, Porsches, AMG's, etc. He still insists his all around favorite to drive is the i8.

Hi Pat, great video as always, however just a quick tip that I was taught from a bmw tech.. If you hold down the gas (kick down) and the brake and then start the car the engine will run and will not turn off. This allows the engine to warm up when idling.
@PatsGarageOnline3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! With the i8, once you turn the car on in Comfort Mode, just touch the gas pedal and it will do the same. I just never do this because I park in a garage and as soon as I put it in gear, it defaults to electric drive again.

Pat, is this a well-known and documented feature that most i8 owners utilize? Being very green on this automobile, I’m not sure if this is considered a ‘hidden’ feature or a routine operation procedure. Either way, the technology incorporated into the i8 is mind blowing. Thank you, as always, for tuning in and commenting. It's great to have you! when the C8 Corvette goes hybrid, I am very curious if they're going to set the car up in any similar way to the i8. The "hold state of charge" feature doesn't seem to be a very common thing that i8 owners know about. In fact, I learned about this on the i8 forum that I participate in. Still, many people don't remember how to use it and they don't even set up a hotkey. New i8 owners have reached out to me to ask if that I had any advice for driving the car and this was one of the first, so I decided to make a video on it. I wish the computer was more intelligent and decided to use this feature in order to improve engine longevity, first. One feature documented in the tech training manual says that if you use the GPS and set a destination, the car will see where you might be driving slowly and make sure that it charges the battery prior to entering those locations so you have battery available. But most people only do that on a long trip. I use Waze on my phone so I don't even do that. The tech is quite interesting, indeed! It's almost like flying an airplane, if you truly want to manage the car's system's. But, you don't have to if you just want to put it in gear and drive.

Thank you. I wish there was a way to do this without having to sit in Sport Mode. Unfortunately, the only way to keep the mid-engine running all the time is to put it in Sport Mode. Any other mode will cause the engine to stop in order to reduce excess fuel usage. I try to run in Sport Mode, which also recharges batteries, so I have a few miles of electric range available to me when I'm in stop and go traffic. That way, the engine isn't constantly starting and stopping.

Pat, I'm a new member, I greatly appreciate your videos and explanations for these cars. I love my I8 for many reasons, but as an "old guy" (I still have my '71 2002Tii), I don't understand a lot about the drive system. I do all my own maintenance in the past, but plan to buy the extended warranty as you suggested. Couple questions? Should I leave the car plugged in whenever it's parked? What about when I go on vacation for several weeks? Safe? Even though fully charged? I know it will automatically turn on the A/C when the battery gets hot, so in my mind, the car is "active". Sorry, the O/M is unclear about this. Also, I'm concerned about the A/C compressor failure you discussed in the "warranty" video. Does the I8 not have an inline filter in the system to trap any particles that get into the freon system? If not, then I would say the compressor should be replaced as a wear item whether it works or not. A lot cheaper than what you and others describe. All my past cars have had an inline filter in the system that protects contamination of the system in the event of compressor failure. Sure, the system requires a flush after compressor replacement, but that is routine and not as costly as others have reported. I haven't opened the "hood" yet, but was wondering what size pin to have ready to hold the hood open? I firmly believe in Redline oil, plan to put in Redline. It is the best oil if you have turbos, since it will not "coke" up when engine is turned off hot. Will this in any way void the warranty? Thanks again, I'm sure I'll have many more questions, but I feel a little better knowing there is someone knowledgeable I can ask!
@PatsGarageOnline Жыл бұрын
Hi Bob and thanks for subscribing. My time is limited and I don't check KZbin comments often. You can leave the car plugged in all the time as the management system will take care of the batteries and it is safe. The i8 service manual does not indicate that there is a filter in the refrigerant lines. I don't recall what size pin you'd need to hold the hood open. I believe a 1/4 inch would likely be sufficient. Regarding engine oil, the i8 has separate water cooling for the turbo in order to prevent the oil from becoming coked. As long as the oil meets or exceeds BMW specifications that you can search on the Internet, I believe you should be OK.
@bimmerBob-xq6uj Жыл бұрын
@@PatsGarageOnline Hey Pat, I have been checking my sources (not exactly a reliable source) and have been told the A/C "filter" may be titled as an "expansion valve" which indicates it serves several functions. I just can't believe BMW would design a system that would "self-destruct" in the event of a compressor failure. Another question: All my gas BMW's like to have a slow charger (with auto turn-off) to keep the battery fully charged. And the I8? Is there an easy method to connect a slow charger to the engine battery? It appears difficult to access, so that may preclude this procedure. And maybe not worth the effort? Thanks, as always, appreciate your insight! Bob

I find that I use this function very often and wish that the car was more intelligent to be able to use it in the manner I speak about. when the C8 Corvette comes out in hybrid, I am wondering how they are going to manage that system. Hello and thanks for the message and kind words. The i8 has been a reliable car for most owners. Many, including myself, daily drive the car. However, there are sometimes catastrophic problems that can result. The high voltage battery is warranted by the manufacturer for 8 years or 100,000 miles. If the battery is not warranted, then you'd have to ask more questions of the dealer. In the United States, a modification cannot result in a void warranty, by law. The only time that a manufacturer can deny a warranty is if your modification caused the problem. For example, if you modify the intake for the mid-engine and a bearing fails in the motor, there's no way you can correlate the two issue and they can't deny a warranty claim. Not every country has those protections like the US. Please see my buyer's guide and 1 year of ownership video where I talk about things that failed and what to look out for. I don't have any more current or updated advice outside of those two videos at the moment but I'm working on developing more content for the future.

Hi and thank you for another excellent video. So, Hold State of Charge causes the ICE to run but without selecting Sport Mode? Could this be useful for maintaining all-wheel-drive in low traction conditions when only light throttle is required?
@PatsGarageOnline4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Hold State of Charge ensures that no power is being expended to drive the front motor, otherwise you could never hold your state of charge (you'd be discharging and need the generator to turn on in order to recharge). So, with Hold State of Charge enabled, the car is sending 100% torque to the rear wheels, unless those wheels slip to a certain extent, and then the DME (computer module) will make a decision to enable a certain amount of torque from the front wheels. The same is true in eDrive, where you are operating on electric power only on the front motor. Should those front wheels slip to a certain extent, the rear motor will start and power the DME will decide how much power the rear axle will contribute. In contrast, Sport Mode truly balances a certain of percentage power applied to the road by both axles with 60% power coming from the rear and 40% power coming from the front on level roads while driving straight, at all times. In the case of severe understeer, for example, in sport mode, the vehicle will transfer 100% of the power required to the rear wheels until the severe understeer diminishes, and then go back to the normal power settings.

@PatsGarageOnline4 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for the question. The i8 uses two systems to hear the interior. The air conditioning system and the hot coolant from the mid engine. The electric heater uses the air conditioning system. Just like a heat pump for a house, it reverses the system in order to generate heat. If you run the engine and you get heat from the coolant passing through the engine, the heat exchanger on that coolant circuit is working. So, if you don't have heat coming out the vents when driving in electric-only, I would assume the air conditioning system may be having problems. If you take it to the shop for service, please let me know what they said the problem was and how they fixed it. I may feature this in a video to help other i8 owners. Thanks!
