Elayna: I watch you all in hi-def and I truly never noticed. You are all beautiful people and I'm surprised to learn you felt self-conscious about your skin. 99% of the women on the planet would kill to look like you. What is wrong with our society that even beautiful women are critical of their own appearance. My wife is a stunner. We had been married 3 years when she mentioned the "scar" on her nose. I laughed because I thought she was kidding. She had gone through a windshield when she was 17 and did, in fact, have a scar on her nose. It stunned me to learn she was self-conscious of something I never noticed. And trolls are trolls because they are insecure and lack humanity. I always try to see the good in people, but trolls have little to recommend them. Great episode and thanks for sharing.

I've felt self conscious of balding from my 20s. Only now in my 40s have I realized that beauty is all about your relationship with yourself - how you talk to yourself with your inner voice, and has little to do with any objective beauty standards, or external insults or compliments. More broadly speaking, it's important to accept yourself and others as they are - with imperfections and flaws - love yourself as you are right now, not some unattainable ideal. And give those around you encouragement, that they are wonderful as they are.

I agree I've never noticed it. I had it really bad as the above the lip and the side of the face it looked like I had some odd mark. I tried all kinds of creams and everything nothing really helped but then it just went away. I think I had to be done with my kids. I had three children and after my son it was so bad and it didn't go away until after my third girl it lessened and then finally went away.

I'll second that.. I'm just a man sitting in a shed in the middle of nowhere. When I first saw you it was your physical beauty that was your worth. But you have exposed your self as a really wonderful human, and that aspect became more important. Your real worth, as a woman, as a partner to a great guy, than as a mother. Tobe honest right now, even if you looked like Riley , it wouldn't matter. Your worth is the whole of you. You are so deeper than the superficialty of everything, so thanks for that. And because I'm a man in a shed I need to add Still a 10 plus, easily.

Those people who are shitty are insecure and have issues with their own looks/self/etc, so they bag on others to make themselves feel better. In the end they just look like selfish, petty and insecure people who are jealous or just angry at themselves. I never understood this behavior. Just remember to drink beer, have fun, before you know it life is done...so be good to one another.

Very sorry you receive those comments Elayna. I just can’t fathom some people! Ironically, I have been commenting to my family recently how I think you are more beautiful now than when you started this journey. I’m honestly with Riley - I like your freckles!! Seriously I binged watched years of episodes in a few months and whilst I noticed all the haircuts (and laughed at family bangs) I didn't notice any skin changes until now when it was pointed out. Elaynas beauty hasn't changed. It's understandable that skin changes on top of integrating the newer identity of being a mother might have shaken Elaynas confidence. But I look forward to seeing her rebuild confidence and settle into the new shape of someone who is a fun loving girl, a loving mother and a stronger and more mature woman.

I cannot imagine putting myself out there as you do and not only dealing with personal self-doubts, but absolutely cruel comments. Just shows what a strong woman you are for sharing this because you certainly didn't have to. Your candidness and thoughtfulness is what drove me to be a patron. Thank you for speaking up. Thank you for putting this video out there! I too developed melasma during my three pregnancies and from being a lover of the sun! The upper lip area was what made me most self conscious every picture and video made me look like I had a mustache. They have slowly started disappearing after my hormones leveled out but are still noticeable enough on my cheek bones and eyebrows that I had a random person ask if I was alright and they looked like bruises on my face. Being a busy mom it’s hard to find the time for self care but you are as radiant and beautiful as you were in your earlier videos! I truly never noticed yours at all! Yes, because sending the message to young girls that they are not pretty enough is such a “great” message. Especially when practically every comment reflects the fact that nearly every viewer has always viewed this person as being extremely beautiful. How can this channel be filled with such zombie like and unintelligent comments, supporting such reckless and potentially harmful behavior? Oh yeah, such a “fantastic role model”. 😐

Oh Elayna, it makes me so sad to see you allowing space in your head to negative thoughts about yourself. You are healthy. You are strong. You are smart. And, so capable and creative! And so many things on the list way before we get to 'pretty face.' And not that you are not. You are gorgeous! But that beauty is driven by all the light that comes from inside. Those spots on your face? They are beautiful because they represent motherhood. In a few more years, lines will show up around your eyes and forehead -- those will represent all the smiling and laughing you do with your beautiful family. The spots, the lines or all the mean-spirited comments cannot make you feel any one way. You control how you feel. You choose what you allow space in your head for. Girl, I don't know anything about the treatment and I might be completely wrong here, but that does not look like it's a viable long-term solution for your lifestyle. I love the sunscreen, covering, face routine -- we should all take better care of our skin but please reconsider the treatment. Please just let your face be. Let all of you be, just the way you are. I wish someone had said all this to me when I was a young girl. Instead I married someone who made sure I felt worse about myself every day. He nearly broke me but I gathered the last bit of determination and I am rebuilding myself one spot, roll, gray hair at a time... I will leave you with this thought: So...we all know about your face spots now. Maybe you don't need to hide any more. We love you and appreciate you. For me, I have been watching from the beginning. I feel like I know you, which is odd but true. You don't know me. But I know you, and you are amazing! ♥

Please use a physical sunblock with titanium dioxide and or zinc oxide. Both are reef friendly as well! As you know, wear a hat when possible! Especially since you have had several treatments, it’s imperative you keep covered for years (yes years) to come! Your melanacites in your skin have been “turned on” due to hormone fluctuations (it’s a protective mechanism) and also living on the water and extra exposure to sun and wind will keep the melanacites triggering excess melanin (think tan). So a hat and proper sunblock are the first two things. Next, product. There are tyrosinase inhibitors. But, they are typically chemicals. I respect you would like to stay away from that type of home/daily treatment in your products. Here’s a suggestion of some more “natural type” ingredients to look for in products: Alpha arbutrin ( from cranberries and bearberries) Mulberry extract Licorice extract Quercetin (antioxidant found in several fruits) Ferulic acid Azalic acid (usually found in grains) L ascorbic acid (The vitC I hope you are currently using. There are several types of Vitc) Please do not use lemon juice on your face as a natural lightener! The pH in lemon is way too low for your skin! Keep your skin well hydrated as well. Aloe and jojoba oil are great. I hope these tips help!!! Please reach out if I can be of help! Keep up the good work!

Hi! I have never commented before but felt the need. First of all, intimidation is the highest form of insecurity. I could leave it at that, but I will continue on. I found your channel with my dad. My dad was my best friend... and he was a sailor. He did not come from a sailing family - it was a passion he found and followed on his own. He cleaned boats in FL for many years - just to have the opportunity to be on a boat. He met my mom while working on boats. They got engaged and decided to move back to MI, get "real" jobs, have a family, make $$ and buy their own boat someday. He had smaller sailboats over the years to scratch the itch of being on the water. He raised us with a genuine and deep appreciation of sailing - growing up around power boats, we knew that there was something special about sailing and we were grateful to know and experience it. He was an incredibly hard-working simple man. He was witty, smart, kind, generous, and took the backseat so everyone else could shine. He achieved one of his dreams which was owning a 45 ft benetau sailboat. The next step in his life-long dream would be to retire and live on the boat full-time. He retired but he did not move onto the boat full time. Unfortunately my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer a couple of years ago, in addition to many other health issues he had going on. He fought SO hard and never once complained. He was the epitome of the perfect example of a man. We got him out on the boat as much as possible in the summer of 2020. Unfortunately, he passed away in May 2021. We still struggle to carry on without him on this side of life. What does this have to do with your skin? I have religiously watched your videos this past year. It has given me so much comfort - your family, the simplicity and remembering when my dad and I watched them together. I (we) have admired everything about your family and chosen lifestyle -- and I personally have especially admired you, Elayna. I am 27 and have been very self conscious as to how my skin looks at my age. The stress from the ups and downs with my dad's health issues, and the grief/stress of navigating a life without my dad have shined through in my skin. Seeing how young and beautiful you look has only given me more confidence and comfort. I know it's easy to focus on the negative (I teach 9th grade - they are MEAN lol and I take it personally sometimes) but just know that the MAJORITY of the viewers love you all and think you are beautiful - inside and out!! Thanks for reading and sail on. xoxoxo.

Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your insecurities, that can’t have been easy. I’m sorry people have made you feel this way. You are amazing, and stay being who you are. Though do what ever makes you feel happier. Much love. I recently have been watching your videos from the very beginning and trying to catch up, I truly never noticed any changes. My boyfriend and I are finally getting a liveaboard monohull in November after 2 years of saving, we've been watching hours of your content for the past couple of weeks and I've only recently started watching the older videos. Truthfully, I think motherhood suits you beautifully! Here I am comparing myself and my life to you, only to see that you struggle just as much as anyone to love yourself. You are absolutely stunning, truly a joy to witness along with your hubby and two little ones. Give yourself credit... we're in a pandemic, on the brink of war, a worldwide food shortage, our planet is dying and little things on top of that certainly don't help but are easy to focus on when nothing else is resolvable. You're killing it(: hope to see ya'll out there someday!

Hi! I've gotten a HALO Laser treatment for my melasma. Had amazing results. I've never done Fraxel though so I can't compare directly. My husband got a vasectomy so I could go off of the oral contraceptives which was fueling my melasma. The 2 combined treatments; no more birth control and HALO Laser treatment has cleared my skin almost 100%. I understand how Melasma can make one feel and I wish you the best!

Hi Elayna!! I work as a laser technician & medical aesthetician. I just wanted to say that I am so sorry you are struggling with your melasma right now, I see the distress that it causes in women's confidence daily. But I couldn't imagine dealing with peoples comments as well.. Although melasma is usually caused by female dominated hormones (yay us!!) sun exposure does make the pigment darker. Finding someone who might be able to balance your hormones may help! From my experience people do have the best luck with prescription medications and topical creams that are used to slow down the melanocytes in the skin (you got Ferrari style melanocytes girl and you want to slow them down to a Honda civic haha) But I can understand people not wanting to go down that road. Using lasers and medications to treat melasma for someone who gets your level of sun exposure does make things more risky as heat and the sun can aggravate it. (However if medications are taken appropriately it should be fine!) That being said the Fraxel (1927 wavelength) does do a beautiful job at clearing sun damage on fair skinned patients, however I would be concerned that the heat from the laser once your skin has initially cleared up may make the melasma worse, and getting sun exposure so soon after treatment could increase your risk for hypo pigmentation (white spots) which are not reversible, and potentally create more sun damage because your skin is so comprised while getting more sun exposure. If you are looking to do a facial treatment I would recommend the Sylfirm X as it is not as sun sensitive as the Fraxel, although it would be multiple treatments so that could be tricky. Don't do any treatments or use any products that are too abrasive as this could make it worse. And I am sure you are so sick of hearing about sunscreen by now.. but finding a good mineral sunscreen (which are reef safe!) is much superior to a chemical sunscreen (not reef safe:( ), and reapplying every hour will help! And remember people who have a negative option on your appearance are TRULY the people who's options do not matter. You are insanely gorgeous always have been, always will be! Lots of love
